MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

TO ELIMINATE ILLITERACY, TO MODERNIZE EDUCATION, TO

STRENGTHEN TOLERANCE _________________________________________________________________

To the Parents and Guardians of Primary School-aged Learners:

The Ministry of Education seeks to ensure that our learners are safe and meaningfully

occupied during the COVID-19 Pandemic period. We understand that this is uncharted

territory and that you may become frustrated while attempting to adapt to the new

lifestyle of social and physical distancing and all that comes with it. We encourage you to

follow all the precautionary measures issued by the Ministry of Public Health.

Our learners are and will continue to be at home indefinitely during this Pandemic and we

are aware that you are concerned about your child’s academic Life and the continuation

of his/her educational journey.

Please note that the Ministry of Education has and will continue to chart a course to

provide our learners with access to continuous learning. To this end, we have compiled

worksheets for Grade One learners.

We expect that each worksheet is completed by the learner with guidance from the

parent. Additional exercises based on each work sheet can also be given to learners. There

should be no rush to complete the booklet. Learners should work at their own pace. Please

remember to be patient and supportive bearing in mind that this home-based

teaching/learning arrangement may be new to both of you. When in doubt, teachers should

be contacted for guidance. Our teachers who will continue to communicate with you and

learners via the internet will be more than willing to give guidance.

You are also reminded that learning can take place anywhere and at any time. Along with

completing the worksheets provided you can also conduct any of the activities listed below

with your child/children while they are at home.

1. Use this period to teach social graces, and how to care for body parts.

2. Find time to bond with your children and help the family to relax and communicate.

3. Teach skill sets they will not be taught at school.

4. Teach children anger management and how to deal with stress.

5. Introduce your child/children to the concept of sustainability.

6. Sing songs with your child/children, encourage them to compose songs and

participate in a singing competition.

7. Encourage your child/children to do art work using materials from within the home

or the environment.

8. Conduct tree planting exercises or gardening with your child/children.

9. Encourage your child/children to create games.

10. Have your child/children conduct experiments under your supervision.

11. Plan with the family what every activity will be: Schedule activities for each person

and give a topic for the day which will be discussed as a family.

Remember do encourage your child/children to have a “growth mindset”. We will all be

stronger and more committed by putting education first when we come out on the other

side of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

For more information and access to additional resources to support your child please

continue to use the Ministry of Education website (education.gov.gy) and our Facebook

and Instagram pages. Also, stay tuned to the Guyana Learning Channel and the local

radio/television stations.
