OVERVIEW

PATA Nepal Chapter had invited the four finalists of the BBC MasterChef UK: The Professionals 2020, including Chef SantoshShah, Chef Alex Webb, Chef Bart Van Der Lee and Chef Phillipa Armitage, who visited different locations of Nepal and gotengaged in various promotional activities during the 10 days of visit to Nepal.

The MasterChef Finalists' Tour to NEPAL was one of the envisaged events andprograms by Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Nepal Chapter to support the post-pandemic recovery initiatives of the ailing Tourism industry of Nepal by promoting itsculture and cuisine.

The MasterChefs' team arrived on 7th April2022 and received a grand welcome at theTribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in thepresence of officials from PATA Nepal Chapter,Nepal Tourism Board, Chef Associationrepresentatives, media, the auspiciousPanchebaja Cultural Troupe and hospitalitystudents.

Upon arrival at the hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu Guest House welcomed the teamwith traditional Newari Culture and Feast.

Later in the evening, a Welcome Dinner Reception was organized by PATA Nepal Chapter in honor of the MasterChefs' team at Avata Wellness Center, Gairidhara, Kathmandu.

Before the dinner, the guests were offered the experience of 'SoundBath", a new product of Wellness Tourism.

Mandikhatar, Kathmandu and shared their experience and insights into the culinary worldamongst hospitality students.

Day 02

In the afternoon, they flew to Pokhara by Buddha Air and visitedArba Village in Pokhara for a Picnic Eve hosted by Everest InnGroup UK. The Masterchefs observed the local products at ArbaAgro farm, the traditional lifestyle and practices of the village,cooked foods and made some promotional videos under the theme“Farm to Fork” to promote Authentic Nepali Cuisine.

Later, in the evening, Mr. Suman Ghimire, the hotelier and former president of the RegionalHotel Association Chitwan, hosted the accommodation and necessary support welcoming theteam at Jungle Safari Lodge in Chitwan.

Day 03 The next day (9th April), High-Ground Adventure hosted the adventure and sightseeingactivities for the MasterChefs in Pokhara. Then, the team was supposed to fly back toKathmandu, but due to the flight cancellation, they were transferred to Chitwan for the event tobe attended the next day at Janakpur.

Day 04

On 10th April, the team reached Chef Santosh’s home at Karjanha in the Siraha district,where Chef Santosh cooked Mithila cuisine with his mother. The Chefs’ team thenvisited the Janaki Temple and judged the PATA YTP Chefs Competition organized byPATA Nepal Chapter, themed at 'Mithila Cuisines and Recipes' at Janakpurdham, Nepal.

The students introduced some authentic Mithila cuisines well appreciated by the Judges, the fourfinalists of the BBC MasterChef UK: The Professionals 2020, including Chef Santosh Shah, Chef AlexWebb and Chef Phillipa Armitage. The Master Chefs team evaluated the arts of food preparation,cooking, and presentation skills demonstrated by the students.

Ms. Samikshya Kark, Mr. Bishal Phuyal and Ms. Himani Dhimal from Premier College of HospitalityManagement were announced as the Winner of the PATA YTP Chefs Competition, whereas PremierHotel School (represented by Mr. Rahul Dhamala, Mr. Sandesh Chaulagain, Ms. Sumi GurmachanMagar and Ms.Laxmi Magar) and Sunshine School of Tourism and Hotel Management (represented by Ms. Asmita Sherpa, Mr. Rajin Pradhan and Mr. Sagar Lama ) were declared as 1st Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up of the competition respectively.

Chef Santosh Shah, while addressing the awarddistribution ceremony, expressed that he got soimpressed by the passion, preparedness and innovativethoughts showcased by the young students. He alsoinspired participating students aspiring to be the futureChefs of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry by sharinghis own story of struggle and success.

Day 05

In a program organized at NATHM on April 11th, the Chief Guest, Honorable TourismMinister Mr. Prem Ale, extended his heartfelt thanks and honor to the organizer andMasterChefs' team for their significant contribution to Nepal’s tourism through thepromotion of diverse food and culture of the nation.The MasterChefs also prepared the dishes along with the winners of Intra NATHM YoungChef Competition 2022 with the ingredients enclosed in the mystery box.

Day 06

On 12th April, PATA Nepal Chapter organized a Fine Dining Program withMasterChefs at GATE college where the four chefs offered a variety of authentic Nepalidelicacies in an appealing, artistic, delicious and balanced combination to all the inviteesand dignitaries present at the event. The filming of these events will also be included in aspecial documentary that would further help in promoting Nepal's cuisine and destinationat large.

The fine-dining program kicked off with small briefing aboutthe event and short remarks from the four masterchefs.Then, the distinguished guests and invitees were invited toexperience the special menu by masterchefs' team. The firstcourse was prepared by MasterChef Philli as Starterincluding Romali Charred Jackfruit Taco added with RedMole, Philli's Chilli Oil, Pickled Cherry Tomatoes & freshNepalese Herbs.

MasterChef Alex presented the second course - RiverSteamed Trout garnished with Citrus Dressing and CourgettePuree, Pickle and Puffed Rice & Timur Chilli Spice proppedwith Apple & Lime Rose Tea, Tomato Water and Onion Oil.

MasterChef Bart Vander Lee prepared the main course, thejuicy Grilled Chicken Breast topped with Nepalese CurrySauce, served with Roasted Aubergine, Nettle Yoghurt,Cashew and Fennel Seed Puree.

MasterChef Santosh Shah served the desert, beautifullyputting together the Kodo Ko Kheer and Mango Snowballfeaturing Timur Biscuit and Caramelized Mango, decoratedwith Marigold Leaf.

Day 07

A pre-scheduled cooking and promotional event at Kalapatthar (Everest Base Camp) onthe 13th of April 2022 got canceled due to the inclement weather conditions in Lukla. TheMasterChefs team took part in the Nepali New Year Eve Celebration hosted andorganized by Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu.

Day 07

On 14th April, the Right Honorable PresidentMrs. Bidya Devi Bhandari presented the"Suprabal Jansewa Shree" Medal to ChefSantosh Shah, in appreciation of his contributionin promoting Nepali cuisine to the globalplatform.

Then, the MasterChefs’ team joined Nepal FoodBlogger in observing, exploring and promotinglocal delicacies around various touristic sites ofKathmandu.

In the evening, the Village Cafe, run byrural women in Jhamsikhel (Lalitpur),hosted a special Newari feast for theMasterChef’s team.

During the visit to Bardiya on 15th of April, the local students and professionals involved in thetourism and hospitality industry of Nepalgunj welcomed the Chefs' team at Nepalgunj Airport,and the Tharu community greeted the master chefs upon arrival at Dalla Community Homestayin Bardiya. The team went for 'wild spices hunting' and collected the Tharu's traditional foodssuch as Ghungi, Fiddlehead ferns (Niuro), Asare, Spinach, and other foods from the nearbycommunity forest.

Then, they cooked local Chicken, Dhikri, Ghungi, Khariya, Andi Rice and other foods together withlocal Tharu cooks and exchanged their basic cooking tips with the locals as well. The evening wasdelightful with the Tharu feasts and cultural program.

The following day, on 16th of April, Community Homestay Network organized a visit toChisapani and a wildlife safari inside Bardiya National Park, where the chefs explored the wildspices and tested wild fruits, assessing their prospective use for cooking.

In the evening, SiddharthaGroup of Hotels welcomed andhosted the Chefs team inNepalgunj.

Later, the MasterChefs participated as the Jury Members for the Youth Chef Competition organized by the Chef Association ofNepal. The 'MasterChef's Trip to Nepal' has been concluded with a ‘Krishnarpan Dinner Reception’ at the Dwarika's Hotel inKathmandu.

Day 10

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) honored the MasterChefs' team on 17th April at a function inKathmandu in appreciation of their visit to promote Nepali cuisine and tourism.

The ‘Master Chef Finalists Tour to Nepal’, organized byPATA Nepal Chapter, concluded fostering Nepal’s authenticfood, culture and various tourist destinations.

The celebrity Master Chefs wearing Chefs' Coatsembroidered with Nepal's national flag and visiting variousdestinations in Nepal for the observation, exploration andpromotion of authentic Nepali cuisine and culture, was analluring and timely initiative by PATA Nepal Chapter tosupport the post-pandemic tourism recovery campaign for theHimalayan Nation – Nepal!!

Master Chefs' visits and activities in Nepal have showcasedand positioned Nepal's authentic food and nation’s culturesas an integral and captivating aspect of the destination,contributing to Nepal's tourism promotion and development.

Similarly, MasterChefs have also inspired young Nepali chefsand hospitality students to engage in innovative practices,continuous exploration and effective promotion of Nepali foodsto the global market.

Chef Santosh Shah has been persistent in promoting Nepaliterminologies to bring Nepali foods to the world stage. Duringthis trip, Chef Santosh Shah, with his MasterChef colleagues,has released a promotional video on 'Ayla' as the Nepali termfor 'Cheers' that people mostly use before commencing drinksat any social gathering or functions.

Ayla is a homemade traditional alcoholic beverage of Nepalthat is offered as a good omen in the Newari Culture. ChefShah believes that using the local terminologies would bemore interesting for tourists and create a positive promotionalvalue for Nepal.
