Dear friends,

Inherent to the life of any community organization is the need to remain vital and to fulfill its mission. But what happens when the community itself begins to change? Programs and activities that once galvanized a community may no longer draw the same interest. Your Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford is committed to the survival and vibrancy of the Jewish community – and our leadership, programs and grantmaking help to ensure its vitality here, in Israel and around the world. We also recognize that it’s crucial to remain relevant. And as a convener and funder, we are committed to helping our partners remain relevant too.

We worked hard during 2018 to ensure Federation’s relevance today and in the future. Several months ago we undertook a strategic planning process, forming the Community 21 Task Force with support from the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford. Our goal is to deploy Federation’s resources as strategically as possible in order to help create and sustain a vibrant future for Jewish Greater Hartford. A diverse group of task force members is evaluating our community’s evolving needs and identifying how Federation can meet them most effectively. They have sought input from leaders at Federation’s partner agencies and local synagogues as well as from folks who are less involved. They intend to address the needs of our multifaceted Jewish community: newcomers and longtime residents, young adults and seniors, individuals and families, people in need, and those in interfaith relationships. We expect to present recommendations to the Board in late spring or early summer.

Another 2018 highlight was our HINENI event on October 4. HINENI, as many of you know, means “Here I am” in Hebrew. We wanted to convey the value of the Federation movement to the wider community in a concrete way. HINENI included powerful firsthand accounts of Federation’s response to crisis situations: Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas; the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Parkland, Florida; and Hurricane Maria, which brought more than 2,600 people from the Caribbean to Greater Hartford to start a new life. It was an incredibly impactful, emotional and meaningful evening, as the 500-plus attendees attested.

This work will continue throughout 2019. We’re holding a series of small group HINENI Community Conversations to explore and discuss the work made possible by your Annual Campaign contributions. The first conversation focused on the Jewish Agency’s efforts to build positive

Jewish identities on North American college campuses in the face of a strong Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The next will examine World ORT’s work to help Jews in the Former Soviet Union become more financially stable.

In January, a delegation of 36 local Jews and Christians, both Black and white, participated in the four-day Interfaith Freedom and Justice Ride to Alabama. They visited Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, stopping at historic sites of the Civil Rights Movement, attending church and synagogue services and hearing from residents who remember the 1960s. They got to know each other at shared meals and on long bus rides. Spearheaded by Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council, the Jewish Federation Association of Connecticut and two local churches, the ride brought together disparate communities to better understand the devastating history of the Black American experience and Jewish Americans’ commitment to help address those wrongs. The group hopes to continue its work through joint advocacy and educational programs.

Federation swung into action immediately after the horrific Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in October 2018, coordinating police patrols of local synagogues and day schools, organizing an interfaith community vigil at Congregation Beth Israel, raising money for Pittsburgh crisis relief and promoting community-wide #SolidarityShabbat services. In early November, Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council organized a security briefing for agency, school and synagogue leadership with experts from the FBI, ADL, the Jewish Federation Association of Connecticut (JFACT), the West Hartford Police Department and the Mandell Jewish Community Center. Federation has helped to secure grants for Jewish communal security since 1999.

Greater Hartford is managed by the Mandell Jewish Community Center. The books are a gift from the

Nearly 300 community members developed their Jewish leadership skills in 2018 with help from the Greater Hartford Jewish Leadership Academy, including 120 lay leaders and 54 Jewish communal professionals. Launched in the fall of 2017, the Academy is managed by Federation with support from the Jewish Community Foundation, the Auerbach-Schiro Foundation, Lea and Richard Rubenstein, and Sandy and Arnie Dashefsky. Pictured at left, the Presidents’ Circle provides a unique setting for presidents of local synagogues, schools and other Jewish nonprofit organizations to learn together, share experiences and build relationships for the benefit of our entire Jewish community.

500+ children improved their reading skills through Children’s Reading Partners during the 2017-2018

school year. Established in 1998, this Federation initiative has served over 6,500 at-risk students in 15 schools over the past 20 years with help from 1,600

trained volunteers. Community members have also donated more than 7,300 books to at-risk students

and their schools through Children’s Reading Partners’ book drives. Teachers consistently praise

this program for its personal, one-on-one approach to helping children build literacy skills and improve

their reading confidence.

Jessie’s Community Gardens grew more than a ton of fresh produce for our hungry neighbors, distributed

through Jewish Family Services’ Anja Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry. Jessie’s Community Gardens

were founded by the Kostin family in 2010 in memory of Jessica Kostin. Today there are 15 gardens at sites

across Greater Hartford.

More than 2,600 Hurricane Maria survivors built a new life in Greater Hartford after Hurricane Maria with help from Federation donors and volunteers and

our friends at Jewish Family Services Tara’s Closet, CREC, and 16 local Jewish agencies, schools and

synagogues that collected donations. Together we donated and stocked relief center shelves with nutritious food, gently used clothing, and toiletries

to help our new neighbors get settled. Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council maintains

strong relationships with Hartford’s municipal and non-governmental agencies and works to

strengthen relationships with other faith and minority communities.

More than 300 community members attended “The Meaning of Jerusalem,” an interfaith panel discussion about the significance of the holy city to the three Abrahamic faiths, at Infinity Hall in Hartford in February, 2018. Co-presented by Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) and the World Affairs Council of Connecticut, the program was moderated by Heidi Hadsell, Ph.D., then President of Hartford Seminary, with panelists Rabbi Tuvia Brander, Rabbi of Young Israel of West Hartford; Saud Anwar, M.D., Co-Chair of the American Muslim Peace Initiative and Mayor of the Town of South Windsor; and Reverend Stephen W. Camp, Senior Pastor of Faith Congregational Church in Hartford. “The Meaning of Jerusalem” was one of several programs comprising the Year of Civil Discourse, a JCRC and Jewish Leadership Academy initiative to enable vibrant, respectful and productive discussion on issues of common concern.

Federation’s Israeli Young Emissaries shared their love of Israel with more than 900 local children and youth during 2018. Young Emissaries are selected through a competitive process for a year of volunteer service between high school and their IDF service. They are hosted by local families and you’ll find them at local Jewish Day Schools, in synagogue religious schools and at community events all over Greater Hartford.

More than 900 children from 662 families across Greater Hartford are strengthening their Jewish identity with free PJ Library books, music and enrichment programs. The Mandell Jewish Community Center manages the local PJ Library program, and books are provided through a partnership of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, Federation’s Lions of Judah, and the Zachs family through the Jewish Community Foundation. Since 2013, Lions of Judah have contributed more than $270,000 in supplemental gifts to fund PJ Library books. The following Lions made a supplemental gift to support PJ Library in 2018.
