Jeremiah’s development on his emotional and physical manners
Describe:
Through about two weeks observing, I relatively realized Jeremiah’s behaviors and
responds are quite possibility conform to Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity
(ADHD)’s typical signs and symptoms. Such as he is the most difficult child to keep
still and quietly sit appropriately on the mat time. He talk too much rather than listen to
teachers’ introduction and order. He run around even climb constantly, and sometimes
he blurt out the answer before questions have been completed, and the teacher
encourage the student sit still and quite can answer. And also he has difficulty separating
emotional and logical responses to a problem. This symptom express when he want to
gain some toys but other children are playing with it, he has the difficult to explain his
appeal or expectation about he want to take a turn. Sometimes I observed he butt in on
the games when others children are playing, such as Kaiden and Ben were playing the
game on ipad, but Jeremiah were so eagerly want have the ipad, then I just jumped in
the middle of these two boys and took the ipad. He also have trouble with maintain his
concentration, and pay close attention to details. Such as he not interested in literacy
and number accounting game. He prefer outside activity such as bicycle and transport
big piece of wood.
Inform:
In order to help Jeremiah overcome his issue and promote his self-control, in addition
teach him how to manage his natural energy and motivation. I prepare to use
demonstrating, encouraging, praising, helping, and questioning, suggesting and so on
teaching techniques to help him and design a serious of activities for him to achieve his
learning outcome step by step. Of course during my observing, I found Jeremiah have
some good advantage, that can help him to achieve the teaching goals quite well. Such
as he is quite good at leadership, and full of positive energy, just sometimes he express
himself in the right way. Take an example, one time he want to offer his muscle to girls,
but his behavior shows he will make some trouble to the girls’ game, so the girls were
running away from him. I can awareness Jeremiah feel sad and grievance from his eyes.
Depend on all this phenomenon, I think this is should be a good teaching moment to
promote his self-confidence, communication skill, and belonging. Hence, I will set up
a small group of activity, and then invite Jeremiah to join with us. During the activity I
will demonstrate simple, easy, and interesting task for him such as we did the LEGO
creating a toy truck, and try to maintain his concentration. When he finished his LEGO
toy truck, I strongly praised him and encouraged him to share his experience to our
other tamariki. That will help him to build self-confidence.
Confront:
In my philosophy it states that I believe as teacher we should have to keep in mind that
children with all special needs are not people not of the same clan. The Chief Review
Officer of Education Review Office (ERO) Draham (2012) remind that, all children
should have the opportunity to participate in early childhood education, including
children with special needs. Not only do these children have the right to take part in
early childhood education, the education and care they receive should be inclusive. This
is link to Te Whāriki where a goals for Exploration: “they gain confidence in and control
of their bodies and emotional.” (Ministry of Education, 1996, p. 50). Barkley (2003)
pointed out that, when they are doing things they enjoy or hearing about the topics in
which they are interested, thay have no trouble focusing and staying on task. But when
the task is repetitive or boring, they quickly tune out. Hence, as a teacher, in order to
cultivate children’s concentration, understand their interested point, and catcher the
teachable moment is quite important. That is why I try to design simple, easy and
interesting task for Jeremiah.
Reconstruct:
I felt that when I did the observing and organized the activities for Jeremiah, good
relationship with this him is such great important. Especially for this special needs kids,
they more or less have some self-abasement emotion. In order to help them, first I
should let them trust me very well, and willing to listen to me. I strongly believe that
children in this young age any problem or issue is possible to be solve and overcome.
We just need to provide them as much as possible opportunity to change and give them
enough time to promote. What is the next change I am going to do is, I have not facilitate
enough learning environment and activities for Jeremiah. Especially I realized that he
is interested music and paly musical instrument. Such as last time when I played the
“Er Hu”, he brought the drum beside me and beat it with the rhythmic. I believe if I
have more time, I still have lots of future work can be done with Jeremiah.
