HONG KONG LAWN BOWLS ASSOCIATION 50th GOLDEN JUBILEE

0 0

The sport of Lawn Bowls was first played in Hong Kong by four Scotsmen in 1900 and together with another five gentlemen, they founded the Kowloon Bowling Green Club (KBGC) which was officially opened on Saturday, 4th August 1900. This group of people then managed and controlled the sport of Lawn Bowls. With enthusiasm, dedication and devotion, the first National Singles Championships was played in 1909 and the National League Competitions began in 1910. KBGC was used as the headquarters of Lawn Bowls until the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association (HKLBA) was officially formed on 11th March 1961. HKLBA then took over the management and control of the sport and became one of the 64 National Sports Associations under the wing of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.

When first formed, HKLBA used KBGC as its registered office until 1976 when we were allocated a shared office in the Queen Elizabeth Stadium Complex in Wanchai. In 1995, when the Sports House (now the Olympic House) in So Kon Po was built, we were allocated a much bigger office for our own use. The HKLBA is still located at Olympic House.

The recent increase in the member of Lawn Bowls Clubs and active bowlers has created some problems in the availability of greens and in organising our competitions. However, such increase goes to prove that Lawn Bowls today is a sport which appeals to a much wider range of people and it continues to grow in popularity both at social and competitive levels.

This book is published to commemorate the 50th anniversary (the Golden Jubilee) of the HKLBA. It covers the history of the Association since its inception and records some of the historical facts which have emerged over the years to celebrate this significant occasion for the sport of Lawn Bowls in Hong Kong.

Message from the President of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association

It is a great honour for me to be President of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association in this our Golden Jubilee year.

Over the past five decades the HKLBA has exerted a great deal of effort to promote the sport in Hong Kong.

Lawn Bowls in the early days was mostly played at a few private Clubs with

limited membership and with little exposure to the general public. Then, in 1981 training courses were introduced at the Victoria Park bowling greens. These courses attracted hundreds of beginners resulting, over the subsequent years, not only a boost in just the number of bowling clubs and bowling club members but also a massive increase in the bowling population in general. This was particularly the case around 1997. 1981 was an important year for the HKLBA. Apart from the promotion of

the sport locally, we opened ourselves to the world by hosting the first Hong Kong International Bowls Classic with the concept of improving the standard of lawn bowls in Hong Kong. To-date we have hosted 29 such events and have attracted top level players from all over the world. So much so that the Hong Kong Classic is now recognised as one of the top three outdoor bowling events in the world. Due to popular demand, we have witnessed more and more public venues built and opened to accommodate our sport. Siu Lek Yuen in Sha Tin, Ap Lei Chau in Aberdeen, the Tai Po waterfront park, Sai Wan Ho in Island East and Wu Shan park in Tuen Mun. Hopefully another new complex in Tseung Kwan O can be completed soon to celebrate our Golden Jubilee. On reaching the second millennium we started a move towards junior participants. It all began with an inter-school competition in 2000 and by repeating this annually we have, so far, attracted 630 young men and 270 young women to the game. In recent years these young people have achieved a great deal of success both locally and at international level. For this we owe, in no small part, our sincere gratitude to all those involved in our Youth Development Programme these past years. Praise and thanks must also be attributed to the Association's various Past Presidents and their officers. They managed to create the clear guidelines for the Association to follow leading to the successful development and growth of the sport which we see today. We should all remember their devotion and dedication to lawn bowls.

Vincent Cheung

Message from the President of the World Bowls

May I take this opportunity to pass on my and the Board of World Bowls congratulations, to you and all at the HKLBA as you approach your Golden Jubilee year in 2011, this is indeed a milestone in achievement for all concerned in our sport in Hong Kong.

It is pleasing to note that some thirty three clubs participate in what is an extremely busy national authority, and it is also pleasing to note the support given to World Bowls by all in the HKLBA, for which we are grateful. HKLBA has grown in stature and numbers over the years and I hope that this will continue in the years to come.

A Golden Jubilee is a special landmark and one which is sure to be a busy time with many activities culminating in the Word Champion of Champions and the Golden Jubilee mixed pairs in November, I am sure that this special landmark will be well supported by all within Hong Kong and Internationally.

Once again please allow me to congratulate the HKLBA on achieving this milestone and wish you every success in 2011 and beyond.

I remain yours in Bowls.

Message from the President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of

Hong Kong, China

Lawn bowling as an organised sports in Hong Kong dates back to more than a century and its local association is now celebrating its golden jubilee. The whole year 2011 is thus dedicated to feting and promoting a game that is now integral to the sports scene of the territory with a long list of events, including top tournaments. The whole community of Hong Kong, now focused anew to develop the sporting facettes of local life, must avail itself of this jubilee to invigorate not just this ancient game but all such activities which together forge so much the identity of a place that has a vital need to come together and strengthen the mind and the physique. Lawn bowling is an exquisite sport of athletics and of strategy best suited for a most hectic city which has to find ways to compete outside the confines of work, to fraternize so as to create the camaraderie born of team sports and vent the everyday pressure that wears down just about everyone.

Any golden jubilee is an occasion for nostalgia, of course, but that belies how it could be a call to strive forward and to build on the successes of the past for a brighter future. The legacy of lawn bowling since its inception in Hong Kong remains to be reguilded which is the aim of 2011 and beyond. As the community gears up to vie for the Asian Games, it needs to use every chance to galvanize itself and to show its mastery of every type of sport if only to involve the people in sports before they can be the ultimate host for the whole continent. Back in 1961 Hong Kong was just about to enter the height of its industrial age and, five decades on, it has transformed itself into a dazzling cosmopolitan financial centre. Through the time lawn bowling has never ceased to evolve together with the city as it turns from the leisure of a very select few, the elite, into that which is today open to whoever with the knack and passion for the game. For everyone then, this half century of lawn bowling rimes also with an amelioration of the society, more dynamic, more open, more optimistic — and to that bravo. In a happy half-century, the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association has come 'like the rest of city' a very long way...

Timothy T.T. Fok, GBS, JP

Message from the Director of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department

On behalf of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association on celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

With the Association’s untiring efforts and dedication over the years, lawn bowling has become an increasingly popular sport in Hong Kong. It is particularly encouraging to know that more young people, inspired by the programmes organised by the Association, have taken up lawn bowling in the last decade. We are also glad to see that the Association’s efforts in nurturing budding young bowlers have borne fruit – our young players are taking part in major lawn bowling events, competing with players at the international level and attaining outstanding results.

On the happy occasion of its 50th Anniversary, I wish the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association continued success and a very memorable golden jubilee year.

Messages from Past Officers

Having been associated with the Association for the greater part of its existence, it is with considerable pride and pleasure that I am able to congratulate the Association on reaching the significant milestone of its Golden Jubilee. I wish all member clubs and individual bowlers every success, and trust the Association will continue to manage and promote our game with similar efficiency well into the future.

Mr. K. G. Wallis President

(1983-1985 & 1993-1998)

Congratulation to Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association on reaching its Golden Jubilee, it is quite an achievement for a sport in the hectic environment of Hong Kong.

Mr. Brian Poynton Vice President (1992-2001)

I would like to thank the President for giving me the opportunity to wish Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association every success during their Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebrations. Ken Wallis was President when I was convenor of Hong Kong Cricket Club and when Ken left for Australia Vincent was elected President with me as his Honorary Secretary. During my tenure I was priviledged to work alongside Vincent & Claudius and since leaving Hong Kong in 2003 have closely followed the very impressive progress & development of the sport via the website. As a Life Member of LBA I hope all Hong Kong bowlers enjoy taking part in the anniversary celebrations, my thoughts will be with you and perhaps might be able attend one or two of the events during the year.

All the very best. Mr. Jim Neilson Hon. Secretary

(1999-2003)

I relish my tenure as Honorary Treasurer with the Association. Met and worked with a team that is dedicated to their individual task and responsibility. My heartiest congratulations to all that have contributed to the success of the Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebrations.

Mr. Richard Chui Hon. Treasurer

(2005-2009)

HISTORY OF LAWN BOWLS IN HONG KONG

It was four Scotsmen who played the first game of bowls in Hong Kong. The event took place around May or June 1900 on the lawn outside No. 9, Knutsford Terrace, Kowloon. Shortly thereafter, a club was formed, money collected and a plot of ground rented and prepared for the game of bowls.

The ground rented from government was a strip of land along Austin Road which is now known as 123, Austin Road. The Club called itself the Kowloon Bowling Green Club and is still operational. It should be noted that the history of the game of lawn bowls in Hong Kong is closely connected with and related to the history of this club.

During the next decade more bowling clubs were formed. They would appear to have played against each other on a friendly basis and in 1908, they formed themselves into an

Association and drew up a set of rules base on the first official code of laws of the game produced by the Scottish Bowling Association. The first official competition was for the National Singles in 1909 and the first lawn bowls leagues commenced in 1910. The first President was Mr. T. Petrie and Mr. A. Ramsey was the first Secretary and Treasurer.

The present Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association (HKLBA) was incorporated on 11th March 1961 under the Companies Ordinance, Chapter 32, Laws of Hong Kong and became one of the National Sports Associations of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China. Within the Memorandum of the Association it is established that the prime object of the Association is “to promote the sport of lawn bowls”.

The HKLBA have promoted the sport in many ways which can be summarized as follows:

a. by organising annual Premier and Triple Leagues with home and away fixture;

b. by holding all year round National Competitions which include Singles, Indoor Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours Competitions, etc;

c. by participating in international competitions outside Hong Kong, ie, World Championships, Asian Pacific Championships, World Cup, Asia Pacific Indoors and Asian Championships, etc;

d. by organising international competition in Hong Kong, e.g. the annual International Bowls Classic since 1981, the 4th Asia Pacific Championships in 1991, World Cup and World Junior Cup in 2005, World Junior Cup in 2007 and the World Champion of Champions in 2011;

e. by organising coaching courses for beginners; andf. by developing and introducing young athletes into the sport.

HONG KONG LAWN BOWLS ASSOCIATION • GOLDEN JUBILEE

In 1970, in the IX Commonwealth games held at Edinburgh, Scotland, the men’s Lawn Bowls Team consisting of G. A. Souza, R. E. Da Silva, A. R. Kitchell and C. C. Delgado snatched the territory’s first ever major events gold medal.

In 1978, the HKLBA, in conjunction with the Government, undertook coaching sessions at Victoria Park, the only public lawn bowls facility in Hong Kong at that time. In fact, the HKLBA is the first National Sports Association in Hong Kong to offer regular and officially recognized coaching courses for

beginners. These coaching courses were later expanded to other public lawn bowling facilities and so far, thousands of courses have been

held with tens of thousands of participants involved.

It was rather unfortunate that between 1978 and 1995, not all beginners decided to take up the sport which was mainly due to a very important fact that there was only one public facility in the whole of Hong Kong and the cost of joining a private club, some of which had waiting lists, proved to be prohibitive for many of the trainees. However, since 1995, more and more public venues were constructed in Shatin, Tai Po, Aberdeen, Sai Wan Ho and Tuen Mun which allowed more clubs to be formed to accommodate interested beginners.

Important recent developments are the Youth Development Programmes and the Young Athlete Scheme which commenced in 2001 and 2006 respectively. These programmes and schemes attracted a large number of youngsters into the sport.

Management of the Association is vested in the Council of Management which, when first formed in 1961, consisted of six officers and twelve members. Today, this number had increased to nine officers and thirty-three councilors who meet, roughly, on a monthly basis when the views on a variety of subjects affecting the sport are reflected, discussed and determined.

Internationally, HKLBA began to send teams to participate in the Empire Games (the Commonwealth Games) in the sixties, the World Championships in 1970 and to the Asia Pacific Championships, the Asian Championships, the World Cup and the Asia Pacific Indoors Championships when these tournaments were first inaugurated. HK players have enjoyed much success, winning Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals.

Hopefully, photographs and past records contained in this book can reflect some of our history to our readers.

The Association of the Hong Kong Yunnan Fellow Provincials Ltd. was established in 1984, and its first Lawn Bowls Teams were founded in 2001 under the name of AYFP with only 15 men and 15 lady players. After 10 years operation, we now have around 100 bowlers, some are Hong Kong Team members, coaches and umpires.

Using the public lawn bowls green at Siu Lek Yuen,

Shatin and Tai Po as our home greens, AYFP Lawn Bowls Team membership is open to all people in Hong Kong, including retirees and disabled. With minimal joining fee and no monthly subscription, our goal is to promote lawn bowls at the grass root level, enabling everyone to enjoy the wonderful sport and participate in the competitions at very low cost. We have won many championships and prizes due to our loyal and committed coaches and members, and their unbeatable team spirit and cooperation.

Ms. Lena Yeung is the Chairperson and Convenor since the founding of AYFP Lawn Bowls Team. Mr. Danny Wong, the Assistant Convenor and men’s team captain, and Ms. Joyce Cheung, the ladies team captain have all inserted untiring support and contributions to built up a goal for AYFP, that is: - in the many years to come, we will continue in our commitment to contribute our best to the development of the sport of lawn bowls in Hong Kong and beyond.

CRAIGENGOWER CRICKET CLUB 紀利華木球會 CCC

Date formed : 1894

Home green address : 188 Wong Nai Chung Road, Happy Valley, H.K.

Craigengower Cricket Club (CCC) was founded in Hong Kong in 1894, when Mr. W. D. Braidwood, the Headmaster of the Victoria English School, converted a turfed piece of ground in Bonham Road near Breezy Point into a cricket field.

The game of cricket was enthusiastically received both by the students and their parents. It was thought that the Cricket Club so formed should be dignified with a suitable name. Mr. Braidwood looked around for a good name and finally settled upon the name of the building which housed his school - Craigengower.

There was one drawback in the use of the cricket ground in Bonham Road. While hitting the ball over the boundary was an easy matter, recovering the ball was less straightforward. The land beyond the boundary was the site of an old cemetery. The students had to recover the balls from amongst skulls from damaged urns that scattered beyond the boundary. Naturally, the players did not particularly enjoy this task.

So Mr. Braidwood looked around for another piece of land upon which cricket might be played. At this time, Happy Valley was a large area of open ground which was used for a variety of sporting activities, including the horse racing sport of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. Mr. Braidwood selected an area in the north-east corner of Happy Valley for the Craigengower Cricket Club.

The first Club House was a small matshed used for changing and keeping gear. It was not until 1922 that a brick club house was built. At that time four clubs shared the ground north of Sports Road. We shared each other's ground for cricket during the cricket season when lawn bowling was stopped. A Club House with a

hall and bowling green next to the bar were eventually made possible by generous donations from Mr. B. W. Bradbury, local cricketers, and people from the Naval Dockyard and Taikoo Sugar Refinery - there were few Chinese members even in 1941 just before World War II.

During the War, the Club House was bombed and eventually demolished by the Japanese who used the ground to shape granite blocks for a Memorial they built at Mount Nicholson.

C.C.C. resumed the lease of its land two years after the War. Using some members' personal guarantees with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, a bar / lounge and a small changing room were rebuilt. Perhaps, it is this sort of personal commitment that has helped to develop CCC's special spirit.

The Club grew from strength to strength during the past years, from a membership of less than 200 in the old days to more than 2,600 families today; and from a bungalow-type clubhouse to the modern Club premises with 8 all weather flood-lit Tennis Courts, 2 very fine outdoor Bowling Greens, a covered Bowling Green, 2 high standard Badminton Courts, a Gymnasium, a 25-meter Pool, a Children Pool, a Jacuzzi, 2 glass-back Squash Courts, 2 Changing Rooms, 2 Steam Rooms, 2 Sauna Rooms, a Golf Driving Range, a Table-tennis Room, an Internet Corner, a Reading Room, 3 Karaoke Rooms, a Seminar Room, a Conference Room, Covered & Outdoor Car Parks, a Bar, a Lounge, a Coffee Shop, 10 Function Rooms and European & Chinese Dining Rooms.

CCC has had a very fine bowing record and the Club’s bowlers have always been in the limelight whether it was in the League or in the Colony championships. The Club first took up this game some time between 1918 and 1920. We have since gone on from strength to strength and attained twenty-five championships in the First Division Bowls League competitions from 1925 up to now.

Some Members of Craigengower Cricket Club also won gold medals in World-class international bowls competitions, such as the World Bowls, Commonwealth games, Asia Pacific bowls etc. The Club’s gold medalist include Mrs. Helen Wong, Mrs. Elvie Chok, Mr. George Souza Sr, Mr. George Souza Jr, Mr. Philip Chok and Mr. David Tso.

Customs & Excise Lawn Bowls Club “the Club” was the latest club to be affiliated with the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association.

The Club was formed in 2010 and its members came from the officers of the Customs & Excise Department. Before its formation, only one member was an active player under the HKLBA, however, there are now

about 40 members.

The objective of the Club is to promote a healthy life style for the officers within the Department and

to let them share the fun of lawn bowls. As the

Club is still in the initial stage of development, players participate in league games and open competitions, with a view to acquiring more experience, enhance their skills and learn more tactics. Our target is to be promoted to a higher Division in the near future.

Club de Recreio first joined the HKLBA League in 1927 and for the first time, won the First Division League Championship in 1937. Since then, before World War II, Recreio became a dominant force among lawn bowls clubs, winning the championship for four consecutive years from 1937-1940. After the War,

Recreio continued its success in the first division league and won the championship for another four consecutive years from 1952-1955.

Recreio produced many first class bowlers. Among them were C. C. Delgado and R. E. Silva who partnered A. R. Kitchell and G. A. Souza to represent Hong Kong in the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, and the foursome won the gold medal in the rink event.

Another bowler worthy of mention is C. M. B. Antunes who was blinded by an eye infection in 1987. However, he continued his bowling activities despite his disabilities. He first took part in the 4th World Blind Bowl Championships in 1989 and won the silver medal for Hong Kong in the Singles. In the same year, he won the gold medal in the Singles in the 5th FESPIC Games in Kobe Japan. He continued to win another gold medal in the 5th World Blind Bowl Championships Mixed Pairs in Victoria Canada in 1993. He is still taking part in the league team this year.

On the ladies side, our club won 1st Division league championship in 1974, 1976, 1986, 1994-1996, 1999, 2002 and 2004. Ms Lena Yeung won the National Singles Championship in 1976, 1982, 1986, 1992, 1996, and 2001 and she won the title Champion of Champions in 1980, 1981, 1990, and 1991. Ms Angela Chau won the National Singles Championship in 1999 and 2002, and also won the title Champion of Champions in 1994 and 1995.

who were our founder members, joined together and registered “City Lawn Bowls Club” at the Companies Registry as a non-profit-making Organisation. Victoria Park bowling green has been selected as our home green since then.

Most of our members were from the training courses organised by the former Urban Council at that time. Victoria Park bowling green was then the only public natural turf bowling green with 6 rinks. Members could only practise during the daytime because there was no lighting available. Complaints from other lawn bowls clubs were received from time to time because sometimes the grass could be as tall as 3 to 4 inches. Despite those earlier unfavorable conditions, our Club has been growing steadily and very keen to take part in all kinds of lawn bowling promotion events.

In 1991, Hong Kong Coaching Committee launched the Coach Accreditation Program, in which less than 20 coaches were qualified in the first batch, of which 7 coaches were our Club members. Besides participating in lawn bowls competitions, they coached in lawn bowls training courses organised by the former Urban Council to contribute their efforts in fostering the growth of the sport of lawn bowls in Hong Kong. Our Club was one of the Community Sports Partners of The Hong Kong Sports Development Board during years 1992 to 1994 for promoting lawn bowling to the general public of Hong Kong through various activities.

After the refurbishment and expansion of Victoria Park bowling green in 1991, it expanded to 12 rinks in two artificial bowling greens; changing rooms, a conference room and a covered corridor were also added. The number of our members has gradually increased from just over 10 in the beginning to 63 now and our Club has already celebrated its 20th anniversary. Over the years, our members have gained many good results in the competitions organised by the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association (HKLBA). Through performing various duties for HKLBA and coaching in the training courses, we aim at making contributions to the development of the sport of lawn bowls in Hong Kong as in the past and going forward.

City Lawn Bowls Club (CLBC) was established in 1989. In those days, lawn bowls players, who would like to play in the competitions or league games, had to join at least one of the few private lawn bowls clubs in Hong Kong. The Filipino Club was formed in 1916 by a group of Filipino residents in a small flat in Granville Road, Kowloon. It was just a social club. As the Club’s membership grew, in 1920, the Club became a more formal establishment with a constitution and by-laws.

In 1927, The Hong Kong Government granted plots of land to the minority ethnic groups for social and sport purposes. The Club was allotted about 30,000 sq. ft. on top of a hill on Wylie Road, King’s Park. The clubhouse was built with facilities for tennis, ping pong, mahjong and included a small

bar.

The community then numbered about 500, which included executives in banks, shipping and various corporations, and musicians. They were active in various kinds of sports, like fencing, billiards, baseball, tennis and softball.

In 1950s, the Club affiliated itself with the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association and remains active today.

The new 3-storeys clubhouse was completed in 1991.

The Hong Kong Cricket Club 香港木球會 HKCC

Date formed : June 1851

Home green address : 137 Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, H.K.

At a public meeting held in Hong Kong in June 1851, a proposal that a club be formed on the military parade ground south of the waterfront - the area to be turfed - launched one of the first cricket clubs outside England. The club was to be known as The Hong Kong Cricket Club and one of its objects was "to promote the game of cricket, tennis, croquet and other athletic sports and pastimes."

The Chater Road ground (now known as Chater Gardens) served the HKCC for 124 years. The first pavilion was a matshed in the north-east corner of the ground (opposite the Furama Hotel). This was soon replaced on the same site by a more solid building. Then, diagonally opposite, an extensive structure appeared (near the old Bank of China). Finally, in 1923, the last Clubhouse was erected, opposite the Hong Kong Club in Chater Road.

The ground became a focal point of the City of Victoria and, although a private club and used primarily for cricket, was thrown open for the public to access and for the staging of important events. Apart from a short break for the Japanese Occupation, the Club thrived, adding Lawn Bowls to its main sports in 1936 and Squash in the fifties.

In 1975, the Club gave up its world-famous site in the middle of bustling Central District and moved to the greener Wongnaichung Gap. The new design allowed for a family atmosphere. To the Chater Road facilities of cricket ground, lawn bowls green and tennis courts, had been added a 25-metre swimming pool, four squash courts, more tennis courts and a snooker room. The further features of a Sportsman's Bar, Sports Annexe, Chinese Restaurant (The Willow Room) and Verandah Coffee Shop have emerged over the last thirty-two years. Dot Cod, our Central bar and dining premises, situated very close to our original ground at Chater Road and open to the public, was opened in July 2000. The list of "other sports and athletic pastimes" has received numerous additions, notably in recent years, Rugby and Hockey - and from time to time, Croquet has

appeared on the greensward, fulfilling one of the Club's main Objectives.

With a present-day membership of over 2000 and providing a comprehensive range of sports and activities in a green and pleasant environment, one of the oldest sports clubs in Hong Kong has moved confidently into the Twenty-First Century.

Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Training Centre 草地滾球訓練中心 LBTC

Date formed : 1997

Home venue : Ap Lei Chau Sports Centre Indoor Bowling Green

Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Training Centre (LBTC) was established in 1997. Mr Jacky Wong, the founder of the LBTC, being a well established lawn bowler in Hong Kong, an ex-Hong Kong Team representative, a current national player for China and its head coach, is continuing to push forward the development of lawn bowls in China, Hong Kong and Macau.

LBTC’s Mission

1. To develop the sport of lawn bowls.2. To train new bowlers and to cultivate their interest

to continue playing lawn bowls.3. To organise local and international competitions.4. To publish a book of lawn bowls technique in

Chinese.

Developing Lawn Bowls

In the year of establishing the centre, Mr. Jacky Wong and his student, Mr. Eric Chan, with their common interest and ideas, joined England’s second level lawn bowls coaching course. By enthusiastically training new players and cultivating their interest in lawn bowls, the pair engineered many new players to join the summer premier league and the winter triples league organised by the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association.

In 1997, the year Hong Kong reunified with China, LBTC hosted the “Hong Kong Reunification Cup” in Craigengower Cricket Club (CCC) and invited all the clubs in Hong Kong to participate. Ten years later, in 2007, the “Hong Kong Reunification Cup” was held again, this time in Shenzhen’s Bijiashan Park.

In 2001, LBTC helped to develop lawn bowls to China, meeting with the personnel from China National

Sports Bureau’s Small Balls Administration Centre in Beijing and introducing them to the modern game of lawn bowls. Subsequently, r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s f r o m the China Mult i -Bowls Assoc ia t ion , under the Adminis t ra t ion Centre , v i s i t e d G u a n g z h o u Yu e x i u s h a n P a r k a n d Shenzhen Bijiashan Park to understand more about the game of lawn bowls. In 2002, lawn bowls officially became one of China’s national sports events.

Lawn bowls s t a r t ed to develop in Macau in 2003. Lead by Mr. Jacky Wong, Mr. George Ma and Mr. Tam Kam Hung, with a great amount of hard work in the process, the Macau Lawn Bowls General Association was established with the approval of Macau’s government in 2005.

LBTC Convenor would like to thank Mr Vincent Cheung – Pres ident of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association for his long term support and encouragement in making our Tiger Bowls Tournament successful and also in appreciation of his efforts in the development of lawn bowls in Macau, Hong Kong and China.

Participation in International Competitions

LBTC has produced a number of outstanding players who have won silver and bronze medals in the international competitions, such as Asia Pacific Bowls,

Asian Bowls, Tiger Bowls, China Open, Japan Open. They include Ms Helen Lai, Mr Ye Sui Ying, Mr Terence Lee, Mr Lin Hung Hui, Mr Ricky Wong and Mr Jacky Wong who played for the China national team and Mr Stephen Chan who played for the Hong Kong Team.

Going Beyond Asia

LBTC also helped the Chinese Multi-Bowls Association and Macau Lawn Bowls General Association to become a member of World Bowls Ltd. By playing well in the 13th Asia Pacific Championship 2009 in Malaysia, the China national lawn bowls team earned their qualification for the 2012 World Championships in Australia for both the men and women.

Creating a World Stage

LBTC started to organise the “Tiger Bowls” tournaments in 1998. It began as a local t o u r n a m e n t , c o n v e r t e d into an Asia tournament by inviting Asia teams to participate in 2001 and it became an international tournament in 2009 with the joining of international part icipants and then i t evolved into the current “ T i g e r B o w l s Wo r l d Invitation”, creating a stage for the world’s participants. Tiger Bowls is now well renowned in the lawn bowls world.

Kowloon Bowling Green Club 九龍草地滾球會 KBGC

Date formed : 1900

Home green address : 123 Austin Road, Kowloon, H.K.

KBGC was founded in 1900 by nine gentlemen eager for some recreational facilities. Although not the oldest club in Hong Kong, KBGC is certainly the oldest Lawn Bowls Club and one that has been synonymous with the development of the sport in Hong Kong. Its membership has grown from that original nine to four hundred and fifty four. When the HKLBA was founded in 1961 its first registered office was at KBGC and office space for administration purposes was available to them in the clubhouse. It was not surprising therefore, that when the first Hong Kong International Bowls Classic was held in 1981, it was played on KBGC greens. Last year was our 110th Anniversary and many sporting activities were arranged to celebrate our progress from:-

The Original Clubhouse 1900 to Club House Interior 2010

A remarkable, but at the same time fascinating evolution. During World War II and the occupation of Hong Kong the clubhouse was used for accommodation to house Japanese Officers and the Bowling Greens were dug up to produce agricultural crops to feed them.

Our No.1 Fah Wong went from a finely tuned greens caretaker to a market gardener. He eventually retired in 1985 after 69 years of service to the club.

Over 110 years many changes have been seen, not only in additional sports facilities, but also in membership. 1974 was the first time that ladies were allowed in the Bar and the club admitted its first lady member in 1984. Today we have over 30 Lady Bowling Members and of course many more ladies who use the club frequently.

At a recent balloting meeting for membership, all four applicants were ladies. (Rumblings were heard in the corridors of power!!)

2010 saw the KBGC Clubhouse declared a Grade 3 Heritage Building by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the HKSAR. Although inevitably placing some restrictions on planned future developments of the club, it did give KBGC a certain prestige status in keeping with its rich history.

It is the dream of many members to have an indoor bowling green complex and avenues are being explored to hopefully make those dreams come true.

Finally the last ten years have seen some wonderful bowling performances on the greens and the details below summarise some of those achievements:-

Shatin Sports Association 沙田體育會

Date formed : 1995

Home venue : Siu Lek Yuen Road Playground Bowling Green

Sha Tin is a satellite town, that was built in HK during the 1980's. Since its early occupation, Sha Tin's population has grown significantly, thereby requiring a substantial increase in its demand for sports facilities.

As a result, the Shatin Sports Association (STSA) was founded in 1983.

This association provides a series of training courses in different sports and encourages members to participate in different tournaments. The Lawn Bowls Club is one of the branches under the name of the STSA.

The Lawn Bowls Greens were built at Siu Lek Yuen (SLY) during the 1990's, and since that time until now, our club has provided different levels of Lawn bowls training courses. SLY is our home green where our members participate in different competitions. We had 3 men's teams and 2 women's teams competing in the Premier League 2010 held by Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association (HKLBA). Both of our men's & women's A teams are in Division 1.

In the last decade, we have good results in many different aspects. Our members have performed very well and gained good results in National & International competitions. In addition, on several occasions members of our club have represented Hong Kong in the PBA's competitions in England.

Today we have nearly 80 members. During the past ten years, more than 10 members have become HKLBA's Coaches & 3 people became HKLBA's Umpires. In the coming Triples League, we will have 1 more women's team.

The United Services Recreation Club 三軍聯會

Date formed : 1911

Home green address : 1 Gascoigne Road, King’s Park, Kowloon, H.K.

USRC - aerial view

History:

Following the leasing of the New Territories to the British for 99 years in 1898, USRC was opened in 1911 to provide a recreational haven for military personnel and their families in Hong Kong.

The occupation of Hong Kong by Japanese forces in December 1941 led to the Club's temporary closure. Reports of wartime Hong Kong are sparse but it is believed that the Club was utilized by the Japanese, whose headquarters were established at the Diocesan Girls School across the road.

After the war, the British military regained control of the Club (minus the golf course which made way for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and adjacent buildings). Thereafter, the Club continued to serve mainly armed services and related personnel until the expiry of the 99-year lease and handover of Hong Kong to China in July 1997.

As 1997 approached, British armed services numbers in Hong Kong gradually declined and their places in the Club were replaced by civilians including, increasingly, members from the Hong Kong Chinese community.

After 1 July 1997, ownership of the Club was passed

to the People's Liberation Army (PLA). With no use for the facilities, the PLA have allowed the Club to be run by and for its members. The Club is now administered as a limited company with a wholly civilian membership.

Notable achievements of members:

Endowed with a range of sporting and recreational facilities, the Club has a proud sporting history which continues to be maintained – the Club competes for honours in the Hong Kong sporting scene much as the military teams did in years gone by.

The presence of USRC players in the local lawn bowls arena has been remarkably strong throughout the Club history (lawnbowling in USRC had probably been going on long before the wartime, though little details of the dates and events could be found). The available records show that as early as in 1958 the Men’s team was the winner in the 3rd Division league competition, and for a lengthy period of time between the 60’s and 90’s, USRC bowlers stayed in high rankings among the top local bowlers in leagues and open tournaments. The number of members of the Lawn Bowls Section was below 30 then, and virtually all the members were non-Chinese. Prominent USRC bowlers of the days, to name a few, included Bob Brown, David Overman, Wendy Overman and Linda King. Added to the list was the McMahon family that made quite a name for themselves, with father (Bill), mother (Rosemary) and son (Mark), all representing Hong Kong at various times.

In the late 90’s and onwards, under an increase of interest in lawnbowling generally in Hong Kong, the Lawn Bowls Section has been experiencing a notable growth in membership: bowlers are now numbered close to 100 and are predominantly Chinese. Successful as in the past, the Section continues to enjoy a record of impressive results in league matches and open

competitions (see Table of Champions in Past 10 Years below). Currently representing the Section are 4 USRC players, viz. Angela Chau, Mercredi Yeung, C S Suen and Winnie Wai, in the Hong Kong Squad, together with a men’s team and a ladies team both participating in the 1st Division for the Triples League 2010.

Participation and Achievements of Youth Development Team

In the past decade, the former Coordinator, Mr. Eric Chan, successfully set up the foundation of the Youth Development Team and also established the Young Athletes Lawn Bowls Training Scheme and Junior Squad.

Message from the Coordinator ofYouth Development Team

My objectives in youth development are not only to emphasize skills and tactical training but also to highlight more on team work, discipline, punctuality, etiquette and their trust and respect between peers.

In future, our challenge is to persuade the youngsters to put more time and attention to this sport rather than to the activities held by their schools and other kinds of sports. In addition to the regular training, we will introduce physical and endurance training.

Hong Kong Youth Development Team (HKYDT)

IntroductionTo promote lawn bowling as a sport, HKLBA decided, in addition to its normal training programmes, to run a youth team to ensure the long-term development of the sport. With the contribution of a group of enthusiastic coaches, the Hong Kong Youth Development Team was formed in 2001. Whilst HKLBA is now celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the youth development has come to its 10 years old milestone and it will keep writing the history of lawn bowls in Hong Kong.

In March 2001, Hong Kong Youth Lawn Bowls Training Programme was started with 32 young boys and girls who had joined the Hong Kong Youth Lawn Bowls Competition in 2000. The training was first held at Shatin but it then changed to Tai Po Waterfront Park as its home green where it has remained until now. In September 2001, by providing knowledge and developing technique of lawn bowls for the youth in regular training programmes, 18 players of HKYDT were able to make their first try in the Premier League.

In the next year, 2002, HKYDT was the Champion in Division 5 in the Premier League and was promoted to Division 4. A successful outcome followed in the expansion in youth development. In 2004, the Girls A Team and the Boys B team were formed and the first Youth Novice Competition was held to recruit more potential youth bowlers. In the same year, Boys A Team was promoted to Division 3 of the Premier League and the next year, 2005, it was promoted to Division 2.

In 2006, the Youth Athletes Lawn Bowls Training Scheme (YAS) was launched in order to raise the interest of the younger generation towards lawn bowls. It provided a more direct path for young players into the Youth Team and the Youth Squad, through systematical training. Today, HKYDT has developed to more than 50 boys and girls players, most of whom were promoted through YAS, year by year, to enrich the size of the Youth Team.

Organised developments of ten lead to good achievements. Besides excellent team achievements in these 10 years, individual achievements are remarkable in the Under-25s at both national and international level. Especially Ken Chan and Jerry Ng, who by winning National Championships including National Pairs, Triple and Fours, have been the members of Hong Kong National Squad for several years. At the international level, Ken won the Asian Championships in 2009 and, with partner Noel Kennedy, the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic Pairs Title in 2007. Their achievements have inspired the Youth Team to improve and strive for the honourable position of representing Hong Kong.

The records and memorable moments will be shown in the following pages together with their smiles and the growth of both the youth and the team.

Last but not the least, the youth development would not be so successful without the generous and continued support from the following sponsors and donations from bowlers and YDT coaches over the past 10 years :

• Mr. Dick Li of Pokka Corporation (HK) Ltd. • Mr. Super Wong of Suzuran Bed (HK) Ltd.• Mr. Alan Wong & Mr. Kelly Yu of DHL International (HK) Ltd.• Mr. Jacky Wong of Lawn Bowls Training Centre • Mr. Roger Ng of Shenship Logistics Ltd.• Mr. Andrew Chan of Honour Quality Ltd.• Mr. Gerry Shirley of G.S. As the tournament is now World renowned, it is worth remembering how it all began.

In 1980, the concept of holding an international bowling tournament in Hong Kong was suggested by Philip Chok and O. K. Dallah to the President, Geoff Murphy. With his committee of Keith Bosley, Pete Smith, Elmo D’Souza, Tiny Conway and Nat Ulla, and with sponsorship forthcoming, plans were implemented. A sub-committee of Jim Viney, Ken Wallis, Roger Pickford, Jimmy Kellock and Mike Fergusen was also formed and with a lot of hard work, the Classic went underway.

1981-1990The first Hong Kong International Bowls Classic (Classic) was held in 1981 between 24th and 29th November at the Kowloon Bowling Green Club (KBGC). Seven overseas teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand and New Castle District of Australia, plus teams from Hong Kong, CCC, CdeR, HKFC, USRC, IRC, KBGC, KCC and HKCC were divided into two sections of eight which played a seven game round robin with the top two teams advancing into the semi-finals. England and Scotland won their section respectively and the runners-up were New Zealand and New Castle District who had come second in its section with a better difference of two shots over Hong Kong Football Club. In the semi-finals, England beat New Zealand 27-14 while New Castle District beat Scotland 22-21. The final was played between Jimmy Hobday/Tony Allcock of England and Darby Ross/Robbie Dobbins of New Castle District. Earlier in the week, England had won the same section game with a handsome 29-9 margin but in the final, Darby and Robbie turned the tables by winning 18-17 to grab the inaugural title of the Classic Pairs.

There was no Classic in 1982 but it revived in 1983. Teams from the same overseas countries and local clubs were invited to participate again and a Pre-Tournament Singles was introduced. Peter Belliss (NZ) beat John B e l l ( E N G ) i n t h e Singles while Philip Chok and George Souza Jr. of Hong Kong beat the New Zealand Pair and won the Classic Pairs title.

In 1984 the Singles was officially included as part of the Classic and was played at the Hong Kong Football Club. 32 participants, including the overseas visitors, took part and George Souza Jr. won the title. In the Pairs, the entries were increased from 16 teams to 20 teams; two more overseas teams, USA and Canada made their first appearance and locally, two LBA teams, the Dragon and the Phoenix, were added to the list to form two sections of ten. A quarter-final system was also introduced this year where we saw five local teams, Hong Kong, KBGC, IRC, Dragon and Phoenix with three visiting teams, Australia, New Castle District and England playing in the quarter-finals. In the semi-final, Australia beat Phoenix and Hong Kong defeated IRC 16-14. In the final, Hong Kong won 20-19 and made it a good year for Hong Kong, especially for George Souza Jr, by winning both the Singles and Pairs titles.

The 1985 Classic saw disappearance of Canada and the two LBA teams but they were replaced by Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Israel. This year we saw a Scottish domination when George Adrain won the Singles and continued to take the Pairs title with his partner, Willie Wood.

In 1986, Canada and one LBA team returned replacing P.N.G and Israel. Paul Richards of Australia made his first appearance and beat Bob Fishlock of New Castle District to win the Singles whilst George Adrain and Willie Wood retained the Pairs title only after a tight battle with New Zealand.

In 1987, Paul Richards retained his Singles title whilst Richard Corsie and Brian Middlemass made it three in a row for Scotland by taking in the Pairs title.

In 1988, Hong Kong, with duo Noel Kennedy and Mark McMahon, equaled Scotland’s three victories in the Classic Pairs and Richard Corsie of Scotland grabbed his first Singles title.

In 1989, the gold turned to the Southern Hemisphere with Rex Johnson and Trevor Morris won the first Pairs title for Australia while Peter Belliss of New Zealand took the Singles title again having last won it in 1983.

There was an increase in the size of the Classic Pairs in 1990 with the arrival of Japan, Norfolk Island and India for the first time to form two twelve team sections. This year we saw a Scottish domination again with Graham Robertson taking the Singles title who went on to

take the Pairs title with his partner, Alex Marshall.

1991-20001991, saw no Classic because of hosting the 4th Asia Pacific Championships.

1992, there was also no Classic for lack of resources.

In 1993, the Classic was revived mainly due to the assistance from the government and our counterpart, the Ladies Lawn Bowls Association (LLBA). In appreciation to the assistance, four ladies teams were invited to take part and this was their first appearance in the Classic. They were Australian Ladies, British Isle Ladies, HK Ladies and LLBA and, together with eight overseas and eight local teams, two sections of ten teams were formed. This year, the number of Singles players was increased to 64 and we saw a most legendary Singles final which can be described as a “never-to-be-forgotten” Singles final between Cecil Bransky of Israel and Graham Robertson of Scotland. It was a bit unfortunate that the game was not recorded on video otherwise it would have served as a great example to all bowlers of fighting spirit and determination to overcome. It seemed to be a whitewash for the Israeli who galloped to a 24-4 lead in little more than an hour over the title holder but suddenly the tide changed and the Scotsman began to eat away the deficit by converting game down positions nine times with his final delivery. In the following thirteen ends Graham managed, not only the improbable of winning all the ends, but also the seemingly impossible of winning the march by 25-24 and retained his title. To have witnessed this was a stunning experience and all the spectators are still proud and honoured to talk about it nowadays for having

been part of such a spectacle. Nevertheless, Cecil, with his partner Jeff Rabkin, snatched the Pairs title from the South Africans and gave

himself some consolation for his traumatic Singles experience.

The Classic was moved to the Hong Kong Island for the first time in 1994 and was held at the Craigengower Cricket Club (CCC) to celebrate her Centenary. This move gave us another Hong Kong domination after exactly ten years when David Tso and George Souza Jr, representing CCC, took

Hong Kong International Bowls Classic

the Pairs title and became the first local club ever to win this title and Noel Kennedy of Hong Kong won the Singles crown.

The Classic began to have split venues in 1995 with the Singles being played at CCC and the Pairs at KBGC. Noel Graham of Ireland beat Neil Burkett 25-24 in the Singles while Ken Logan and Alex Marshall won the Pairs making Burkett a Classic runner-up in 1995 in both the Singles and Pairs.

In 1996, again, the Singles was held at CCC and the Pairs at KBGC. John Noonan of Australia took the Singles title on his second Classic appearance and the South Africans, Gerry Baker and Neil Burkett managed to take the Gold Medal in the Pairs.

1997 was a memorable year in more ways than one. In July there was the handover of sovereignty followed in November by the appearance of previously unknown young bowlers form Australia and England. Adam Jeffery of Australia, Andrew Wills and Stuart Airey of England outbowled their more experienced opponents and lifted the Singles and Pairs title in their first appearance in the Classic.

1998 was a year for the defending champions as both Adam Jeffery of Australia, Andrew Wills and Stuart Airey of England retained their Singles and Pairs

title respectively.

In 1999, the last Classic Tournament of the old millennium was held at KBGC where Adam Jeffery claimed a hat trick of Singles titles and made it the fourth Australia Classic Singles victory in a row. Jonathan Ross and Noel Graham took the pairs title and made it a dream finally come true for Noel after trying it five times.

T h e 2 0 0 0 C l a s s i c was held at KBGC to mark the Centenary of the Club where we

saw the appearance of bowlers from China taking part in the Singles event. In the

Singles, Adam Jeffery was hoping for a fourth title but was knocked out in the first round. The Singles final was played between Peter Bellis of New Zealand and George Sneddon of Scotland. It was 16 “all” after 20 ends when the Kiwi took a three and then a one to

take the command but the Scotsman did not capitulate and responded with a one and

two twos and took the title. The Pairs competition was disrupted by the weather and with the overnight rain flooded the KBGC green, a decision was made to move the last three games to the indoor venue at Hong Kong Football Club where in the final, Jonathan

Ross and Noel Graham of Ireland beat Bobby Donally and Neil Burkett of South Africa and retained

their title.

2001-2010In 2001, the Classic Singles was held at KBGC with the Pairs being held at CCC. The Singles final was played between Jason Greenslade of Wales who beat Jonathan Ross of Ireland, and Neil Burkett of South Africa who beat Robert Jones to stop an all Welsh final. Greenslade was out of the block very quickly in the final and Burkett was, as always, playing catch-up in an attempt to win. In the

end, the early lead was too much and the delighted Welshman took the title.

Players then moved over the harbour to CCC to start the marathon event of two groups of 12 playing 11 games in five days with the top four teams of each group battling it out in the knock out stage for the title. To win the Hong Kong Classic Pairs Championships each player had to bowl over 1200 woods; hard work when a lot of people still see the game as an old mans’ sport. The Pairs final played between Jason Greenslade and Robert Jones of Wales, who beat the Australians and George Sneddon and Alex Marshall of Scotland, who defeated the South African Pair. The Scots were in control throughout the game and took the title with a 22-16 victory that stopped a Welsh domination which had only happened three times so far in the Classic History, ie. 1983 Hong Kong, 1985 and 1990, Scotland.

The 2002 Classic featured the locally trained, HKLBA groomed, Youth Development Team entering the Classic scene. They were represented by Musa Karamdin, Jerry Ng and Ken Chan in the Singles and Jerry and Ken also took part in the pairs. The Singles was played at CCC where, for the first time in the Classic history, we saw two players from the same country playing against each other. They were David Peacock and George Sneddon from Scotland and David took the title eventually with

a 21-13 victory over George. The Pairs was held at KBGC and players from down under dominated the final. Paul Girdler and Russell Meyer from New Zealand started off better on a very wet green and beat Tom Ellen and Kelvin Kerkow of Australia 33-13 to grab the first ever Classic Pairs title for the Kiwi’s.

There was no Classic in 2003 because of the intended hosting of the 10th Asia Pacific Championships in Hong Kong which was later cancelled because of the outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong.

In 2004, the Classic resumed with both events being held at KBGC. This year, we saw an England domination when Mark Walton took the Singles title then went on to win the Pairs with his partner Graham Shadwell.

2005 marked the Silver Jubilee of the Hong Kong Classic and to celebrate this special occasion the organizing committee decided to invite all the past winners back to Hong Kong to take part in the Jubilee Year Tournament. After an intensive search around the globe, a total of 12 overseas and 4 local past winners accepted the invitation. They were Rex Johnson (1989) and Robbie Dobbins (1981) from Australia, Noel Graham (1995, 1999) and Jonathan Ross (1999) from Ireland, Jeff Rabkin (1993) from Israel, Brian Middlemass (1987), Willie Wood (1985, 1986), George Sneddon (2000, 2001), Kenny Logan (1995)

and Graham Robertson (1990, 1993) from Scotland, Paul Girdler (2002) from New Zealand, Neil Burkett (1996) from South African and from Hong Kong, George Souza Jr. (1983, 1984, 1994), Philip Chok (1983, 1984), Noel Kennedy (1988, 1994) and David Tso (1994). The Singles was played at CCC. Paul Girdler beat George Souza Jr. to reach the final against KBGC youngster Heron Lau who defeated Noel Kennedy of Hong Kong, Noel Graham from Ireland and George Sneddon the Scotsman to reach the final where he lost to Paul 2-0 in sets. The Pairs were played at KBGC where Noel Graham and Jonathan Ross from Ireland defeated Australian 18-8 and Scotland

25-14 in the Quarter and Semi where the LBA team, represented by Lee Ka-ho and Ken Chan from the Youth Development Team, beat KBGC 18-11 and a combined team of Neil Nurkett and Jeff Robin 13-15 to reach the final. In the final, Ireland narrowly defeated the young boys 14-10 to record their third Classic Pairs title. Despite the defeat, the youngsters reflected a high degree of success for the Youth Development Programme organized by the HKLBA.

After celebrating its Silver Jubilee in 2005, the Classic

resumed normal business in 2006 with the competitions being held at three different clubs on the Island. Singles at the Indian Recreation Club (IRC) and the Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) with the Pairs at CCC. The Singles final was played at HKFC where Jeremy Henry of Ireland beat young Scotsman Wayne Hogg 2 set to 1 with his greater experience. The Pairs was played at CCC and Henry’s hope of performing a rarely achieved double was dashed in the final when he and teammate Paul Daly was edged out 18-13 by South Africa’s Wayne Parry and Neil Burkett. That was the second Pairs title won by Burkett who was playing his 10th Classic. In addition to the two titles, Burkett was also on the receiving end of four Pairs and two Singles finals.

The 2007 Classic returned to Kowloon side at KBGC and this year was a year for the younger bowlers, both overseas and local. In the Singles, Mark Watt of New Zealand beat Merryn Kings of England two sets to one and being just turned 19, he became the youngest Singles winner in the Classic history. In the Pairs, Hong Kong’s Noel Kennedy and Ken Chan had a nail bitting game against the Wales Pairs and managed a 15-13 win for the Pairs title which made Ken the youngest local player to won the Pairs title.

History was in the making at the 2008 Hong Kong Classic, firstly for the inaugural Women’s Classic but also for the record-breaking achievement of the English men’s team, Graham Shadwell and Mark Walton, who became the first team to twice complete a Singles and Pairs “double”. The inaugural Women’s Classic marked the complete amalgamation of the HKLBA since the process began in 2002. This inaugural event celebrated that all bowlers in Hong Kong, despite their gender, can now equally enjoy all the advantages and conveniences when they play the sport under a single management

a n d g o v e r n i n g b o d y. T h e inaugural Singles winner went to Margaret Letham of Scotland who beat Shirley Ko of Canada two sets in the final where the inaugural Pairs Championships went to Nor Hashimah Ismail and S i t i Za l ina Ahmad of Malaysia with a comfortable 21-4 final against the Welsh women.

The 2009 Classic was held on Hong Kong side with men and women playing simultaneously at IRC, HKFC and CCC, and it was an Australasian domination. Leif Selby of Australia beat Hommer Mercado of Philippines to win the men’s Single while Genevieve Baildon of New Zealand beat Canadian Josephine Lee and took the Gold. In the Pairs, Andrew Kelly and Richard Collett from New Zealand men, Kelsey Cottrell and Julie Keegan from Australian women both beat the men and women teams form Malaysia and won the pairs title.

Three Kowloon clubs, the Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC), Club de Recreio (CdeR) and KBGC, hosted the 2010 Classic. In the men’s event, once again it was an English domination with Robert Newman taking the Singles title then going on to won the Pairs with his partner Sam Tolchard, the third time for England in seven years. In the women’s event, Nor Hashimad Ismail of Malaysia won the Singles, Kelsey Cottrell and Julie Keegan from Australia successfully defended their Pairs title by beating Sonia Bruce and Maila Witheridge of Philippines in the final.
