with a voice recording of one of the New Milford Senior

Center staff members. The message will always be repeated

twice and may be left on your voicemail if you do not pick up

4 | SENIOR CENTER RE-OPENING UPDATE

HAPPY SPRING FRIENDS!

And here we are...over a year from our initial halting of inperson programs and activities, but we’re

happy to say that the light at the end of the tunnel is more visible than before!

Over the next few weeks, New Milford Town Buildings are beginning to open to the public and that

means that the Senior Center will also be in line to reopen our doors. We ask that during this time,

continue to bear with us with patience and understanding as will begin phasing in our inperson

programs and activities. Since this is a public building, we will still have to strictly adhere to all

health and safety protocols such as social distancing, controlled room capacities, and mask wearing

despite being vaccinated (with specific exceptions).

It’s been a long time coming and we are excited and looking forward to our reopening. We truly

cannot wait to see you all again when it is safer to do so and when YOU are ready to rejoin us at the

New Milford Senior Center!

Warmly,

All of us at the New Milford Senior Center

BIRTHDAY WISHES FOR CHORE SERVICES | 5

NEW MILFORD CHORE SERVICES WILL

CELEBRATE ITS FIFTH BIRTHDAY THIS MONTH!

In April 2016, agent Leonardo Ghio received a call from a client

looking for someone to rake her leaves. After a few fruitless

days of searching, Leo took it upon himself to rake the small

yard. When he was finished, the smile on the client’s face said it

all. This was something that other New Milford Seniors could

benefit from!

Shortly after that incident, the New Milford Chore Services shape. We

wanted to provide heavier chores to help seniors stay safely and

independently in their homes. This is a different approach than most

chore service programs that hire people to clean their houses. New

Milford Chore Services performs heavier chores and we do it with

volunteers. We have serviced over 300 different clients and provided

nearly 1,700 hours of work for folks in the past five years. Just like a

baby, our first years were spent crawling, getting used to our mission,

and finding out just the sort of jobs we could do.

But as we have grown, we have learned to walk, even run. In our fourth

year, we completed over 700 hours of service. We change smoke

alarms, take out heavy A/C units or put them back in depending on the

season. We’ve cleaned gutters and raked leaves; put up grab bars and

stair railings, rebuilt steps, and fixed doors.

We declutter, fill dumpsters, remove old mattresses or broken furniture,

rebuild mailboxes. We’ve even moved folks into senior housing. When

our seniors ask for help, we do our best to oblige if we can. Our limits

are challenged with every new request! Our capacity to help is only

limited by the number of volunteers willing to lend a few hours here and

there. If you know someone who has skills and kindness, tell them we

are looking for volunteers! We mat a volunteer’s strength to the request

so that everyone is comfortable and no chore is a chore!

Our goals this year are: 800 hours of service, increase our volunteer numbers, and reach out to as

many seniors in need as we can!

New Milford Chore Services, like a hyperactive five year old (we all remember what it was like to

be five, don’t we?), is excited about what we can do and how we have grown. If you have a need,

please call 8604574191 and leave a message with Rufus, our Chore Coordinator. Or, consult with

Leo or Mira, our Municipal Agents, to see if we can help you. If you aren’t sure that what you need

to be done is in our purview, call and find out. If we can’t do it ourselves, we can recommend local

businesses who are reliable and recommended by other seniors. One of our customer surveys said,

“The help was the bestfriendly and kind.” Helping you, our seniors, be safe and independent

makes us extremely satisfied. Thank you for making this birthday month the best yet!

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR COVID-19 SCAMS

Unfortunately, scammers are

using the COVID19 pandemic to

try to steal your Medicare

Number, personal information,

and money. And they're using

robocalls, social media posts, and emails to do it.

Remember, if anyone reaches out to get your Medicare

Number or personal information in exchange for something,

you can bet it's a scam.Be on the lookout, so you can stop

scams before they happen. Here are recent Coronavirus

scams to watch for:

Robocalls offering you respiratory masks they'll never send

Social media posts fraudulently seeking donations for non

existent charities, or claiming to give you stimulus funds

if you enter your bank account information

Fake testing kits, cures, "immunity" pills, and offers for

protective equipment

VisitMedicare.gov/fraud for more information and tips on

preventing Medicare scams and fraud.

The mission of New Milford

Chore Services is to assist

senior residents of New

Milford with light chores

work so that they are able to

remain living independently

and with dignity, at home. We

assess work on a case by case

basis, but here are some

examples of how we might be

able to help: Trim hedges,

rake leaves, weed the garden, wash windows, spring

cleaning, decluttering, rearrange furniture, switch out

screen/storm windows, change lightbulbs, or even tighten

screws. The New Milford Chore Services program is

funded through federal and state grants and donations based

on a sliding scale of client fees. If you think we might be

able to help, give Chore Services a call at 8604574191.
