from to reach consumers. Consumersliketousethesechannelstoresearchand buy products - especially withsmartphones (mobile phonesconnectedtotheInternet).

These four points show howsmartphones are becoming the normforconsumers:

● According to comScore, in most developedmarkets,over50percent of consumers own a smartphone. Othermarketsarefollowingclosely, withimpressivesmartphonegrowth.

● AstudybyGoogleandIpsos,showed that69percentofsmartphoneusers used their phone to get more informationaboutaproduct,while 70percentusedtheirphonewhile shoppingin-store.

● ResearchfromForrestershowsthat over 50 percent of retail sales will be web-influenced by 2015. That means that a majority of consumers like to get information aboutproductsonlinebefore they makeapurchase.

● Finally,accordingtoIBM,80percent of consumers use social networks toresearchnewproducts.

In a multichannel world in whichconsumers increasingly researchand buy products online, the digitalavailability of accurate productinformation is critical. One of thewaysconsumersusemobiledevicestoresearch products is by scanning barcodes. In2011, justoneappprovider,Scanbuy, recorded more than 20millionconsumerscans,a440percentincreasefrom2010.

However,accurateproductinformationisavailableinjust9percentofsearchesusing major third party apps, whichis where consumers conduct themost product research, according toGS1 studies. Even more alarming forretailers, GS1 research found thatnearly 40 percent of shoppers saidtheywon’tbuyaproductiftheydonottrusttheaccuracyofinformationtheyfinddigitally.

GS1understandsthatwhenconsumerssearch for products online andeither cannot find the product ortrust the information they find, themanufacturer becomes invisible andloses sales. In other words, they aredigitallyoutofstock!

GS1 has released its newest standard, the Global Protocol for PackagingSustainability(GPPS).

TheGPPS,whichwas developed by TheConsumer Goods Forum (CGF), includesmore than 40 environmental, economicand social indicators for packagingsustainability. It provides the consumergoods and packaging industries with acommon language todiscuss andassesspackaging sustainability. GPPS metricswillnowbepartofatradeitem'sproductinformation that is available from GS1'sGlobal Data Synchronisation Network(GDSN). By leveraging GDSN, tradingpartners will be able to automate thecost-efficient exchange of real-time andtrusted sustainability data about theirproductpackaging.

GlobalandlocalbusinessescangainmanybenefitsfromtheGPPSstandardsuchascost benefits, reduced environmental

impact, improved consumer perception, better decision making and extendedinfluencing.

“GS1 is totally committed to supporting the drive for sustainable consumption and production," said Miguel Lopera, Chief Executive Officer of GS1. "It has been a real pleasure to collaborate with the CGF to deliver an open global standard for an efficient and cost-effective way of exchanging vital data about packaging to optimise the resources used to protect consumer goods. This project is a real example of partnership working to meet a critical need, and I believe that it augurs well for addressing product sustainability in a similar manner.”

The GPPS standard is also a bigwin forconsumers because they will benefitfrom the reduced environmental impactand cost benefits that occur whencompanies design packaging holisticallywith the product in order to optimise

overall environmental performance. In addition, the new standard canresolve consumer complaints aboutoverpackaginganda lackofconsistencyininformation.

“One of the strengths of this project is how it has brought together so many companies and organisations from across our industry to work collectively on developing this common language. Now we need to put the language to work. We are already doing so in Unilever and we are seeing the benefit,” said Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever and Co- Sponsor of the CGF’s Sustainability Pillar.

"The CGF is delighted to see the release of the open global standard for GPPS, and we look forward to further collaboration to improve the sustainability of consumer products," said Sabine Ritter, Executive Vice President, Strategy, Industry Initiatives, Strategic Alliances of the CGF.

In order toaccommodate local needs and yet remain global and applicableacross industries,GS1created theGlobal Standards Management Process (GSMP) to support thedevelopment andmaintenanceoftheGS1System.
