NEW LOCATION!
Our partnerships with Guelph festivals and artists continues. Be sure not to miss the Fab 5 festivals’ co-presentations throughout the festival weekend as well as our Local Initiatives partnership with Lynette Segal’s Capacitance series.
Witness as we define gravity with aerial company Aeriosa as they take their work into the trees. Experience the magic of metal blades on ice as Le Patin Libre brings its contemporary dance onto the ice. We are also excited to welcome back Suzanne Miller & Allan Paivio Productions for the third time and to bring Julia Sasso’s 20-year old but still significant work back to the stage.
The Festival draws audiences of all ages together to witness exceptional dance from across the country and to participate with us through a variety of workshops, ice dance parties, residencies and discussions.
Our commitment to nurturing the next generation of dance artists is going strong as we are once again offering Youth Dance Day and Teen Dance Day, as well as our closing Youth Moves performance, featuring nine youth companies showing us that the future of dance is alive and well.
Aeriosa B Nicholas Podbrey
Gravity is the force that draws physical bodies towards each other.
The Guelph Dance Festival embodies this force as it is made possible by a great number of new and old partnerships that join together, promising to make the festival far greater than the sum of its parts.
This year, our popular In the Park series will see some great new additions. We are excited to introduce a second location at Hanlon Creek Park, and delighted to be working with the Hanlon Creek Park Neighbourhood Group to create a fantastic community event in Guelph’s south end. At Exhibition Park, we have partnered with the Exhibition Park Neighbourhood Group, which will be offering its Creativity Picnic in concert with our dance activities on Saturday.
It has been a busy and exciting year as we restructured our staff. Janet Johnson took on the role of Outreach Artistic Director, while I took over the role of Festival Artistic Director. We welcomed Kit Clark as the General Manager and brought on several new board members. Thank you to every member of the board, some of whom have been serving the Festival for the past five, 10 or even 18 years! My heartfelt thanks for your incredible support and direction. Thanks also to all of the generous volunteers, donors, sponsors and funders for coming together to make this festival a truly community event. We hope that the force that compels us towards one another will make for a phenomenal experience — together.
See you at the Festival!

Frog in Hand MISSISSAUGADragon 2015Choreographers/Performers: Damian Norman, Colleen Snell, Andy Ingram
Dragon tells the epic story of two men on a quest to slay a dragon, but their encounter does not go as planned. Instead, they learn the true meaning of courage
and the redemptive power of empathy. This production blends swordplay with dance and visual design. Frog in Hand manipulates the dragon legend as a way of studying greed, humanity’s strained relationship with nature, the power of movement to cross borders between cultures and the overarching importance of myth and archetype in defining a collective human identity. This is of course in addition to swashbuckling fun and spine tingling thrills!

Thanks to Joe Pagnan and Noelle Hamlyn for concept and production design and to the Off the Wall project (Ontario Arts Council, Living Arts Center, Art Gallery of Mississauga) for research and development support. Thanks also to the Guelph Dance Festival for bringing us back for a second year!
Ferenc Fehér HUNGARYTAO TE (EXCERPT) 2010Choreography: Ferenc Fehér
The title of this duet for two male dancers comes from the legendary from the legendary Chinese sage, LaoTze’s famous and well-known work, Tao Te Ching — The Path of Virtue. In the title, Tao refers to the path, the way, the universal law, and Te refers to virtue — the power through which tao manifests itself. The task is to maintain harmony.

Thousands of missed connections, bodies moving through space, wrapped up in their own oblivion. Connections made lack meaning and content…. We drift, we shift, we connect, but do we really…we drift, we shift, we connect and it goes on. Are we really there in the moment, or without conscious thought has there already been a shift to the next moment, seeking a better
moment? How does it feel to have eyes open to really see, hear and fully experience, unguarded?

Aeriosa VANCOUVERBirds Land 2016Choreographer: Julia Taffe
Birds Land is a two-part vertical dance site work drawing inspiration from the behaviour of birds. Created on location in response to natural terrain, a trio of dancers explores the ground at Hanlon Creek Park
(with special guest performers, the Youth Dance Day participants) and takes to the trees in Exhibition Park. Birds Land is based on a concept that Aeriosa developed in 2015 at Tofino Botanical Gardens and North Chesterman Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Julia Sasso dances TORONTOSporting Life (EXCERPTS) 1995Choreographer: Julia Sasso
Twenty years after Sporting Life first premiered, Julia Sasso reimagines her multiple Dora award-nominated work in collaboration with a new generation of extraordinary interpreters. In a series of absurd vignettes, five characters reveal the futility of aggression and our potential for redemption. Explosively physical, potent and poignant, Sasso’s seminal creation timelessly mirrors our fragilities and perverse lust for violence.
“Alive with aggressive energy… yet imbued with a humanistic concern.”
—William Littler, Toronto Star
Partial nudity in this piece.
ORA SCREENINGCo-presented by Guelph Film Festival as part of their Fab 5 contributiion.
ORA is a stunning meeting between the artistic worlds of choreographer José Navas and filmmaker Philippe Baylaucq. It is the first film to use 3D thermal imaging*, producing visuals like none that have ever been seen before: the luminous variations of body heat seen on skin, bodies emitting a multitude of colours, a space filled with movement that transforms itself. The film is inspired by Darwin’s theory of evolution and the myths of Narcissus and Prometheus.
*Although this film was shot in 3D, it will be presented in 2D.
This film contains scenes of nudity and/or sexuality. Viewer discretion is advised.

Suzanne Miller & Allan Paivio Productions MONTREALTHIRST 2014Choreographer: Suzanne Miller
The Water Project: THIRST draws from bodily systems governed by water and the larger planetary body of earth and the world around us. Here, thirst is used as a metaphor for knowledge, freedom, peace, need, the insatiate — and the pitted hunger of greed. Thirst happens when water is not flowing
— metaphorically, when flow no longer exists. THIRST considers both these dimensions, thinking about the flow of water as a source for movement and thinking about flow/no flow as a metaphor. As dancers, an investigation of the science of fluids and their inherent dynamics through bodily systems is combined with the poetics of metaphor and meaning.

Co-presented by Eden Mills Writers’ Festival as part of their Fab 5 contribution.
After two decades as a dancer and a writer, Sara Porter stands at the collision of the two in her multi-disciplinary work, Sara does a Solo. Turning her writing on herself in a fearless account of what we all face
— an aging body and a reflective mind — Porter creates a world where intimacy and pathos, hilarity and beauty co-exist in the physical stories she tells about life as an artist and a parent. Part memoir, part stand-up comedy, part dance performance, Sara does a Solo is unlike anything else. A bold and beautiful account of mid-life.

In the inspiration for this piece, Plato distinguishes between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who really do see the truth. The enlightened one is symbolized by the dancer en pointe, and the corps work collectively to symbolize the prisoners. This dance explores flexibility of the mind and the healing power of belief.

Visceral Movements TORONTOShortcomings 2016Choreographers: Peter Kelly and Carolyn Morris
Shortcomings is a movement exploration striving to bring the emotional context of self-efficacy: an individual’s belief in self to attain a specific performance through necessary behaviours. When shortcomings — a failure to meet a standard — act as a blockade, individual response is variable. With rapid, intricate movement and gestures that contrast the integrated delicate flow, personal responses to their shortcomings are fortified.

Co-presented by Guelph Jazz Festival as part of their Fab 5 contribution.
Capacitance 11 is the last of a series of multidisciplinary, improvisational performances and conversations. Curating 11 shows over a span of 10 months, Capacitance choose 46 exceptional artists from divergent disciplines to come together to co-create and collaborate, exploring the challenging and mysterious nature of improvisation. Through spontaneous collaboration and discussion, audiences and
artists alike are transported into unimagined territory.

Footprints is about coming of age. From past to present and finally future, the dancers uncover their fears of the unknown as they look forward. Moree School of Dance WATERLOOWe Insist 2015Choreographer: Meghan MacNeil
We Insist began with a small seed of an idea, the idea of change. Conversations grew into a physical dialogue on the consistency of change in our lives. In juxtaposition, we considered the longing to hold onto people, places and things. We Insist became an inquiry into how our own thoughts shape our experience of change.
PERFORMERS Brenna Bishop, Paige Braun, Emily Crawford, Terese Dimeck, Rachel Gojmerac, Kira Hatashita, Jessica Heard, Emily Kuch, Bianca Laube, Celeste Laube, Carolyn Leung, Gabby Martindale, Maddi Peng, Polina Papazotos, Parker Ruby, Violet Vaughn, Spencer Wither, Sara Wong, Payton Wentzlaff, Tigger Wong

Hidden Heart Collective GUELPHHidden Heart Collective was created in 2012 with a mission to bring artists together to create and explore. It is a passion project, which at its core was inspired by a poem that illuminated the idea that there is a spark in all of us to create, to be moved, to be part of some-thing either as audience or performer. It can be easily forgotten or buried deep, but we can always return to it, overcome and begin again.
Who knows that in the depth of the ravine of the mountain of my hidden heart a firefly of my love is aflame — Abutsu-Ni

Le Patin Libre MONTREALLe Patin Libre is a contemporary ice skating company from Montréal. Its performance art uses ice, skates and glide as medias. Some people see Le Patin Libre’s work as a form of “contem-porary dance on ice.” The first collective was founded in 2005 by former high-level figure skaters. They regrouped with the intention of transforming their athleticism into a mean of free expres-sion. Far from sparkles, stereotypes, and champions’ demos, the creations of Le Patin Libre are real works of art exploiting the amazing choreographic and theatrical potential of glide. www.lepatinlibre.com

Suzanne Miller & Allan Paivio Productions TORONTOSince 1998, Suzanne Miller & Allan Paivio Productions has worked toward a hybrid, poly-cultural repertoire of new dance and music. The distinc-tive character of the company derives from an ongoing series of cultural and artistic exchanges that feed the creative process. They have toured throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe, South America and the Middle East. This June, they will undertake a full-scale production in Rome. Their history includes full-scale productions in the theatre and site-works in unconventional spaces such as galleries, rooftops, a cave, a train station, a monastery, shopping malls, and a used bookstore. Miller’s own practice began with classical ballet and is informed by the traditions of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and José Limon. She has been influenced by choreographers who embody their work as dancers — entirely committed intellectually, physically and emotionally, assuming all responsibilities of the performance. millerpaivio.com

She has created and produced five celebrated full-length ensemble dance works. Sasso performed internationally with Toronto’s Dancemakers for 16 seasons and continues to create, teach and per-form independently. juliasasso.com
