NSW Truckline Branch Wetherill Park has taken out Truckline’s Branch of the Year Award for 2018. The announcement, made at the recent Truckline National Conference on the Gold Coast, marks the second year in a row that Wetherill Park has received the accolade.

“Wetherill Park ranked highly throughout the year across all our sales and performance metrics,” says Truckline General Manager Mick Henderson. “They’ve worked hard, set a consistent performance standard and ultimately come home with the award as a result, something they should be very proud of.”

The 23 Truckline stores across the country are ranked each year based on a traffic-light system. The generation of sales, profit and cost management are just a few of the performance measures assessed. However, according to Henderson, it’s all underpinned by customer relationships.

“At Truckline we provide unrivalled service and knowledge and we aim to build a partnership with our customers,” he says. “If we can do that the sales will follow, and it’s clear Wetherill Park is at the head of the game.”

Wetherill Park Branch Manager Cameron Hart says the award reflects his team’s commitment to its serving its customer base.

“This result is a real joint effort,” he says. “The team work very hard to go the extra mile for our customers. We know that expenses in this industry are a real concern. Truckline offers the best quality product at competitive prices, and it’s our job in store to help customers identify cost effective solutions for their repair or maintenance needs. Ultimately what matters for our customers is to stay on the road and they know they can rely on us to help them.”

Truckline has 60 years of experience in the Australian truck industry and is a leading retailer and distributor of aftermarket truck and trailer parts. It says it prides itself on offering the best advice and support possible and, in line with this, its national conference saw staff and management come together with representatives from many of the brands sold through Truckline to brush up on knowledge of new and existing product.

The three-day event kicked off with leadership training, followed by in-depth workshops with 30 parts and accessories suppliers, including Castrol, Donaldson, Fleetguard and Narva. The workshops focused on developing strategies to maintain optimal supply chains and ensure Truckline continues to identify and serve customers’ needs. Attendees worked both together and in state-by-state groups, an acknowledgement that different regions across Truckline’s national network present different challenges and opportunities for branches and customers alike.

“As a company we believe we have the best skilled and trained staff in the industry, and we're committed to maintaining that by continuing to provide training and by working closely with our vendors,” says Henderson. “With access to over 77,000 parts for American, European and Japanese trucks, and 92 per cent of our stock held in store, we know we have one of the best parts availability in the business and customers can rely on the expertise of our staff to identify and source the part that’s right for them.”

MAHA – a history of testing innovation

Trucking Australia 2018, held 18-20 April in Canberra, has been hailed a success by event organiser the Australian Trucking Association (ATA). Here is ATA CEO Ben Maguire’s summary of the event.

As Trucking Australia comes to an end for another year, I take this opportunity to reflect on its success.

Over the past three days the ATA has welcomed more than 450 delegates to Canberra as they join us for what I would describe is our most engaging and innovative Trucking Australia yet.

This year we welcomed 33 expert speakers to deliver informative sessions on the issues that matter most. I thank the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove for opening the conference at our welcome breakfast and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack for highlighting the important role the transport industry plays in the Australian economy.

I thank all speakers who dedicated their time and expertise to deliver invaluable workshops and sessions on key industry issues such as fatigue management, truck technology, chain of responsibility, safety communications and mental health. These sessions provided a platform for delegates to share their views and an opportunity to gather practical knowledge and tools that can be put in place to improve their businesses and workplaces.

Trucking Australia 2018 encouraged delegates to start a conversation and share their stories. The Safety Summit generated powerful discussions that the ATA will use as guidance in creating policy as we move forward. The level of engagement the summit received and the passion demonstrated suggested we host longer and more in-depth sessions of this kind in future.

I am extremely pleased by the quality of our networking events that showcased all the Canberra region has to offer as we mingled in the Pialligo Estate Glasshouse, heard from economic experts at the Deloitte Business Lunch and admired the astonishing views from the Arboretum at our Foundation Sponsors Gala Awards Dinner.

I am proud to welcome Greg Haylock of Emerald Carrying Co and Andy and Mick Divall of Divall’s Earthmoving and Bulk Haulage into the Kenworth Legends Hall of Fame and congratulate the deserving winners of the National Trucking Industry Awards, Belinda Polglase, Barry Fitzgerald, JJ Lawson Transport, Brown & Hurley, Ross Fraser OAM and Frances Ross.

The enthusiasm showed towards our new initiatives like the FatigueHACK and Re:act sessions was overwhelming, highlighting the passion our delegates share for a safe and viable future. I congratulate team Augmented Intelligence – winners of our fatigue hackathon. This team and the others involved in the competition were proactive in creating a solution for driver fatigue and used the conference as an opportunity to consult those who stand at the coalface of the industry and understand this issue all too well.

I thank our foundation sponsors BP, NTI and Volvo, as well as all the event sponsors and partners who have contributed to the success of Trucking Australia 2018.

I look forward to welcoming our delegates again when Trucking Australia returns for 2019 in Perth, WA.

MAHA Australia has shown off its new install at the new Motor Vehicle Inspection Station (MVIS) site in Hume, ACT, which opened on 25 July 2017.

This new MVIS is home to vehicle inspections for both heavy and light ACT-registered on-road transports. The NHVR testing process is a mandatory annual requirement for all heavy and light ACT-registered on-road transports. The tests cover general vehicle-safety checks and in particular MAHA Australia’s roller brake tester will measure very accurate Dynamic + Static brake force, imbalance, gross weight and then suspension tests are conducted on the axle play detector while retaining all records to ensure a complete audit trail.

MAHA equipment is used in government testing facilities around Australia. The two oldest units are in Longreach Queensland (24 years old) and Bendigo Victoria, (26 years old) and both are still going strong.

MAHA says its strong relationship with its both government-based and private customers are due to the unique fact it is a brake and suspension testing-equipment supplier that can manufacture, supply, install, repair and calibrate its equipment. These were good reasons for the MVIS to give it fair consideration for this project. The types of equipment installed into the MVIS facility are: Brake, weight and suspension testing equipment - •MAHA18TRollerBrakeTester(Dynamicbraketestingand gross weight). •MAHA20TAxlePlaydetector.

MAHA’s installation was completed with the full cooperation of the MVIS and completed within a week by MAHA technicians, who were able to streamline and coordinate the process for a time-efficient outcome.

The new testing facility is a drive-on/drive-off with iPad operation for the inspector. Wheels are rolled at 3km/h while the drag, dynamic deceleration, imbalance and gross weight are all checked in the same process. The vehicle is then parked with the axle on the suspension tester while the inspector views for defects underneath.

MAHA says the benefits of this testing process include:•Timeefficiency, offeringeasyaccesstoamandatory testing system. •Accuracy.•Repeatability•Dependability•Minimalstaffingrequirementforhassle-freeoperation.

MAHA says the MVIS is a satisfied customer that has experienced no faults, maximum reliability and consistency of readings, and these unfailing results have kept operations running smoothly, avoided downtime and generated optimum performance for the testing facility.

The MVIS testing facility is one of the larger installations by MAHA. Because of the attention to detail shown in this flagship facility and the streamlined and coordinated fit-out conducted

by its technical team, it says it is happy for potential customers to visit and check out the high standard facility which reflects the MAHA brand.

“As with many other sites we are particularly proud to show new customers this fit-out because it showcases the standard and quality of the German engineering behind the MAHA brand,” says MAHA Australia Managing Director Michael Lauster.

MAHA says potential customers can be confident the company will support them throughout the whole process, from planning the workshop layout and conducting the civil works, including concrete cut plus pour, to installation, training and on-going support from an extended sales and support process.

Cold-battery bluesNow that we are approaching the cooler months of the year, it’s important to ensure that your customer’s batteries are in tip-top health in readiness for those cold nights and frosty mornings that many parts of Australia experience.

Cooler temperatures might mean greater accessibility and comfort for those who travel to some of the normally hotter areas of Australia but those cold desert nights can bring out the worst performance in batteries. Likewise, areas that are subject to large amounts of rain or snow through this time of the year demand even greater battery performance due to higher electrical loads in these kinds of demanding environments. These battery issues can be time-consuming to fix and seem to happen at the most inconvenient time.

Battery maintenance is important year-round but cold operation of batteries can often unearth a weakness that was not apparent in a warmer climate. Temperatures well below 25ºC can greatly increase the internal resistance of a lead-acid battery, meaning it is hard for it to release its stored energy. This results in a significant drop in performance and capacity. If the battery is in a poor state of health before hitting the cold, its future could be already jeopardised.

Extremely cold climates with sub-zero temperatures can even cause flooded-cell lead-acid battery electrolyte to freeze, resulting in expansion and potential damage to the plates and casing. Temperatures higher than 25ºC can often mask this poor state of health because the battery will perform better in the short term at increased temperatures, though prolonged extreme overheating can cause premature failure.

Checking electrolyte levels in serviceable batteries is not the

only important part of the maintenance process. In the case of starter batteries, load testing and capacity testing with quality battery-testing equipment such as Midtronics testers is the best way to identify if the customer’s battery is still serviceable for some time yet or in need of replacement. The same goes for deep-cycle batteries, with capacity tests revealing the battery’s ability to continue delivering what it is designed to do. Cleaning and tightening of battery terminals to ensure sound connections is critical because increased moisture getting to the battery terminals can accelerate corrosion, just like it can on the battery mounts and clamps.

Periodical charging of batteries during the colder months is of utmost importance for several reasons. Even if the battery is in a good state of health, its state of charge can diminish quickly when operating in a cold environment. Start batteries have the hardest task at this time because the electrical load in the vehicle is often at its highest. With cold, rainy weather and shorter daylight hours, headlights, wipers and heater fans spend more time on when driving. This increases the electrical load, meaning less current from the alternator is available to charge the start battery and any auxiliary batteries.

This is mainly an issue for vehicles that are repetitively started over a number of very short drives or those with diesel engines, which use more power from the start battery when starting in cold conditions owing to glow plugs and intake-air pre-heaters. Additionally, cold batteries are harder to charge given their higher internal resistance, so they require a higher voltage to overcome this and provide a full state of charge.

This is where a quality multi-stage 240V workshop battery

charger can come into play. The same goes for batteries in caravans and campers that may be left sitting through the colder months; they should be periodically charged also to keep them healthy.

Redarc Electronics says its Smart Battery Charger SBC1205 is perfect for the maintenance charging of batteries. It’s designed to provide a battery-chemistry-specific charge profile to ensure that any automotive lead-acid battery is fully charged. Redarc says it can even detect faults in the battery that may cause issues down the track.

Redarc offers another solution to the issue with its Manager range of battery-management systems, which it says are ideal for use in campers and caravans and can safely maintain the

auxiliary battery both when the vehicle is in use and in storage. They are also designed to alter the battery-charge voltage to compensate for hotter or colder conditions.

KT Cables Accessories’ new 50A Heavy Duty Connector with Voltmeter has been designed, registered and developed to be unlike any other heavy-duty connector, providing a live voltage reading of your power connection simply by touching the ‘power’ symbol on its smart-touch LCD display.

The voltage reading illuminates blue to be easy-to-read during the day and highly visible at night. The voltage reading turns off automatically after 30 seconds and will only turn on when the power symbol is touched.

The KT 50A Heavy Duty Connector with Voltmeter is ideal for a variety of automotive, marine camping and solar applications, and can be mounted permanently to a flat surface simply using two screws (e.g. in the rear of a 4x4, where solar panels are often connected when camping). KT says another point of difference is its waterproof LCD display (IP67 rated), which allows it to be used for heavy-duty applications where water may come in contact with equipment.

The new KT connector is manufactured from durable polycarbonate and an ideal solution for 12V applications being used in a variety of rugged environments and weather conditions. Its design allows it to be paired with traditional KT 50A Heavy Duty Connectors and the nickel-plated copper pins allow for a secure power connection. KT recommends 8 B&S cable for the best connection.

Easier rod-end and drag-link-end removalRod ends and drag-link ends are designed to tightly engage. Due to their shallow-angle taper, they can often lock into place, making them very difficult to remove.

The normal solution is to take to the thread of the tie-rod end with a mash hammer, which is likely to damage the thread and make the drag-link end unusable. If the tie rod or drag link is a single-piece or crimped design, this could cost a complete new component. If not, a new tie-rod end will be necessary.

Hydrosteer says it has developed a solution to this problem with its ball-joint-remover kits, which are designed to protect the rod-end thread from damage during the removal process.

There are two different kits:

•43-20245,whichincludesaball-jointremovertosuitM20, M24 and 7/8 UNF threaded ball joints.

•43-20270,whichincludesaball-jointremovertosuitM18,

M16 and 3/4 UNF threaded ball joints.

Hydrosteer says these kits are reusable, small and – with their own tin to keep them together – easy to carry around, making them ideal for small or large workshops alike. It says the process is easy – just remove the ball-joint nut, spin the correct ball-joint remover on and give the head of the remover a sharp knock while supporting the back of the mating part with a heavy hammer to prevent damage – and will pop all but the most stubborn rod ends loose.

Hydrosteer carries one of Australia’s largest ranges of heavy-vehicle power-steering products covering new and remanufactured steering gears from brands such as RH Sheppard, TRW and ZF/Bosch Steering Systems, plus steering pumps, VIP steering wheels, steering slip shafts, mitre boxes and draglink assemblies.

The company says its products are all made to stringent original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality specifications and that it is the only ISO 9001-accredited steering business in the industry

Supporting the Aftermarket Automotive Trade

Now is the best time ever to upgrade your radiator to an Adrad AdFuse core at Natrad HDS because, in addition to the benefits of quality heavy-duty cooling, you can also receive a bonus $100 gift card.

Adrad says its exclusive AdFuse radiator cores have vastly superior strength compared to soldered cores because they use the most advanced and sophisticated tube-to-header welding technology available in Australian-manufactured radiators.

In a typical ‘flat-fin’ radiator the radiator tubes and headers are soldered together to form the core. Tanks then attach to the headers to complete the radiator. This tube-to-header joint is critical because it must cope with stresses from thermal expansion, vibration and pressure.

AdFuse cores are constructed using welding robots to individually fuse each tube to the header and produce a much stronger bond than solder. Some radiator cores can contain more than 500 tubes, with every tube welded at both ends. This means a single AdFuse core can contain more than 1000 individual welds. AdFuse uses a computer controlled robot that is able to perform precision welding with an accuracy of less than 0.1mm while welding each tube in less than two seconds.

AdFuse cores were introduced back in 2013 and have now seen service in a multitude of applications. Adrad says they have earned a reputation as the ultimate heavy-duty aftermarket radiator for on-highway and off-highway vehicles because a stronger radiator can handle more extreme temperatures, vibration and stress than a standard one.

AdFuse cores come in 5/8-inch and Ultra-T configurations,

providing maximum strength and durability in applications where high temperatures, stress and vibration occur. The Ultra-T core features extra tubes to significantly increase cooling performance for hard-working engines.

Natrad HDS workshops are specialists in heavy-vehicle cooling and have upgraded thousands of trucks with high-performance radiators.

Ryco has announced the launch of four new modules to its diesel particulate filter (DPF) online training resource, adding more value.

The first three modules are designed to help drivers discover more about their diesel vehicle and unravel some of the myths surrounding the role the DPF plays in a vehicle’s operation. The fourth is a technical module for mechanics and resellers to learn more about DPFs.

“The number of vehicles fitted with DPFs in Australia is growing fast,” says Ryco Group Product Manager Pablo Ruiz. “As a result, mechanical workshops and automotive service centres are reporting an increase in the number of customers presenting with DPF warning lights on the dash.”

Ryco says the new DPF online modules cover a range of topics and are a valuable reference tool for both automotive professionals and drivers alike.

“As a result of the increasing popularity of diesel power vehicles in Australia, DPF maintenance and replacement is certainly a hot

topic," says Ruiz. “To help address some of these questions our DPF technical training series provides critical information, including why a new DPF is the best option when replacement is recommended.”

Most drivers aren’t aware of the DPF when they purchase a diesel vehicle. Ryco, however, says they need to be armed with better knowledge about its operation. Mechanics, meanwhile, need the right information to accurately diagnose faults and take the appropriate action before recommending a replacement.

“Stop-start city driving is to DPFs what Kryptonite is to Superman,” says Ruiz. “The issue is that in these driving conditions the DPF may never reach that critical temperature to regenerate and, as a result, the DPF blocks up faster, bringing on the warning light earlier and, at worst case, a no-start situation.”

The DPF self-cleans during a process called ‘regeneration’, whereby the engine control unit (ECU) adds in extra fuel to generate temperatures inside the DPF of 600°C and higher to help burn particulates into ash, which is then expelled through the exhaust.

The four new additions to Ryco’s DPF online training resource cover the following topics and include tips for owners to help DPF regeneration:

•DieselCarCareTips: This module is designed to help drivers get the most from heir modern diesel vehicle and avoid costly repairs to the exhaust and emissions systems, in particular vehicles fitted with DPFs.

•AreYouFacedWithReplacingYourDPF? This module informs customers facing the replacement of their vehicle’s DPF with all the options – both good and bad – so they can make an informed decision.

•WhatisaDieselParticulate? This module brings to light the environmental impacts of the particulate matter produced by diesel engines, and why the DPF is so critical.

•BestPrinciplesofDPFHandling: This module is designed to help automotive professionals educate their customers about their options for a replacement DPF, while teaching them the best practices of service, diagnosis, inspection and repair.

Ryco says these new learning resources are great for resellers and workshop staff looking to increase their technical

understanding of DPF operation and fault diagnosis, as well as their customers, and designed to enhance the conversations workshop staff and customers have about DPF replacement.

“We believe that training and knowledge resources are critical for workshops and resellers,” says Ruiz. “We are confident that both drivers and automotive professionals will benefit from this free comprehensive resource brought to the forefront by Ryco, a brand people know and trust.”

The online modules include a quick and optional multi-choice questionnaire to test knowledge at the completion of the video.

Many people drive at night with inferior headlights, not realising just how dangerous this can be.

Philips says its new Ultinon headlights provide 160 per cent brighter light to help drivers spot hazards and react quickly to them, while their high colour temperature of up to 6000 kelvin produces a bright white, daylight-like beam.

Philips says this clear, natural light improves visibility, so the driver doesn’t have to strain to see the terrain ahead, making for a safer, more comfortable drive. It says it also gives the vehicle a modern look.Compact design, easy installationLED headlights usually come with an electronics box attached. This device is the brains of the LED, managing aspects of its performance such as wattage and light output.

The Philips Ultinon LED, however, uses a brand-new bulb design with electronics integrated directly into the body of the bulb. This compact design takes up less space in the headlight unit, allowing the bulb to be easily installed in a wider range of vehicle models. Long-lasting lamps you can rely onThe typical story with conventional headlights is the brighter the light, the shorter the bulb’s lifespan.

LEDs, however, last much longer – up to eight years in the case of the Ultinon, according to Philips. So drivers can get on with life without having to worry about replacing failed lights.

A full LED range The Ultinon range doesn’t just include headlights – it also includes a wide range of signalling, stop/tail and interior lighting.

Indeed, Philips says there’s one for just about every vehicle application, from brighter interior lighting and intense, bright exterior lighting to stop-light bulbs that illuminate instantly to make rapid braking safer.

Lightforce has just announced its latest innovation – a range of LED Headlight Upgrade Kits – and truckies and travellers who are looking for the next light to give them the added advantage will be interested to know they are now on the market.

Lightforce says its new LED Headlight Upgrade Kits, like all of its products, are designed to be rugged, reliable and manufactured using only high-quality materials. These premium globe kits have a claimed lifetime of up to 50,000 hours, or 50 times the longevity of standard halogen globes, so they can reduce on-going maintenance. Lightforce says they are easy to install, fully CAN-bus compatible and rated at a 4000k colour temperature for optimal contrast and detail on the road.

Lightforce says it listened to feedback from its customers to develop the new LED upgrade kits.

“The new LED upgrades complement the colour of our LED driving lights on the road,” says Lightforce Customer Service team member Ben Thomas.

Lightforce says the use of flexible copper heatsinks has freed up space, allowing all the components to be located inside the headlight assembly. It says the lights have an extremely low current draw of 1.6A, freeing up the alternator for all the added electrical necessities for on-road comfort.

Many long-haul travellers will have experienced the dreaded blown halogen globe from an overcharging alternator. Lightforce says this issue simply won’t happen with its LED upgrades because they can run up to 24V.

Stocks introduces heavy-duty equipment sales divisionStocks Automotive Australia is pleased to announce the expansion of its business with the introduction of a new commercial-sales division.

The new commercial division will be operated by Peter Mathers, who has a long, successful history in the commercial-vehicle repair and service industry. Stocks Automotive Australia General Manager Phil Goodwin says Mathers’ knowledge of commercial wheel alignment is second to none and so is the company’s range of Hunter equipment.

“Our business has experienced phenomenal growth, with high demand for our range of Hunter wheel aligners, wheel balancers and tyre changers for passenger and light-commercial vehicles,” says Goodwin. “This is a result of dealerships, tyre stores and workshops recognising the profitable service opportunities available.”

Stocks aims to replicate this success with the introduction of its dedicated commercial-vehicle division and offer these profitable opportunities to truck/bus manufacturers, dealerships, fleet operators, tyre outlets and workshops.

Stocks will support commercial-vehicle operators and tyre suppliers with the introduction of a new commercial-sales truck fitted out with the latest Hunter wheel alignment, wheel balancer and tyre-changer models.

Mathers says he can drive it over to your workshop (conditions apply) to demonstrate how Hunter can improve your heavy-duty business. He is enthusiastic about the benefits of the right equipment such as the Winalign HD, which is claimed to diagnose tyre-repair conditions in one-third of the time and give accurate, three-axle wheel alignment readings in just four minutes.

“Vibration issues can be a problem with heavy vehicles but these are solved with clever diagnostics built in to the Hunter heavy-duty wheel balancer,” says Mathers. “When you are changing truck tyres, you’re also in for a surprise when you see how compact the Hunter heavy-duty truck tyre changer is.”

DT Spare Parts is a leading brand in the independent aftermarket for commercial vehicles and distributed is in Australia by Donaldson Motors. Its complete range for trucks, trailers and buses encompasses all required spare parts, including all standard wheel bolts.

Wheel bolts are safety-relevant components and used to connect the wheel and wheel hub. These high-strength connecting elements are available in different versions according to the application. Different wheel bolts are used depending on the form and characteristics of the wheel hub. To ensure a safe hold, the wheel bolts are countered with matching wheel nuts.

Production of wheel bolts is carried out by cold forming. Here, the raw material in the form of wire coils is previously stress-relieved to the required outer diameter. A blank is sheared off from the roll by machine and further processed. Increased strength and improved surface quality is achieved.

DT wheel bolts are available in all standard variations and designed to meet your highest quality requirements and offer a long period of use. The following examples detail grinded wheel bolts and spiral wheel bolts, as well as spiral wheel bolts with environmentally-friendly Geomet coating.

DT-Technic InfoIn the case of the grinded wheel bolts, a specially formed area on the bolt head ensures security against rotation. A press fitting ensures that the bolt is held securely in the wheel hub. DT spiral wheel bolts have a material-optimised press fit and the company says they are characterised by low wear during assembly. Due to the pressure grouting in the elastic area, bolts and wheel hubs are designed to be re-used even after repeated assembly.

A further version of the bolt differs in the surface coating. The Geomet coating is designed to enable a constant tightening performance with the first use and after repeated use, as well as optimum protection against corrosion. The use of chrome-free Geomet also conforms to the environmental-protection requirements of the EU end-of-life vehicle (ELV) directive.

DT says the safety and reliability of a commercial vehicle is increased through the use of high-quality wheel bolts. It recommends that installation be carried out exclusively by trained specialist staff, particularly in the case of safety-relevant parts. When replacing the wheel hub, the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tightening torque, for instance, must be observed.

In addition to wheel bolts, DT Spare Parts offers all standard wheel hubs, wheel nuts, spring rings and washers, plus all articles required for the replacement of wheel hubs in the form of complete repair kits.

- australian diesel mechanic magazine - May 2018 -

Almost all wheel-rim attachment failures can be attributed to one cause – the reduction in clamping force between the relevant wheel-assembly members. This reduction in clamping force is, in almost all cases, due to:•Eitherthefailuretotorqueorincorrectlytorquingthewheelnut.•Over-torquingofthewheelnut,leadingtowheel-studfatiguestretch.•Therefittingofcontaminatedwheelrimsthatallowsettlementofthe rim/hub mating surfaces.•Thefittingofincorrectnutorstudtypes(i.e.conical,DINspherical, spigot) to non-compatible wheel types.

In perfect conditions (i.e. a correctly engineered new assembly) and under the prescribed preload, the wheel stud normally has the elastic ability to maintain clamping force under a variety of different load situations, acting on lateral vertical and horizontal planes. These conditions change considerably when clamping force is compromised, usually by human intervention, metal fatigue or a combination of both. These are some of the prime culprits:•Over-torquingstudfatigue.•Under-torquing.•Paint-scalerustonmatingsurfaces.•Incorrectlyassembledcomponents.•Incorrectlubricationofthreadsorinterfaces,creatinganover-or under-torque scenario.•Wornwheelspigots.•Drum-securingboltsholdingthewheeloffthehubface.•Loosestudbacknutsorthestudnotfullyengagedinthehub.

These kinds of issues can result in movement of the rims, not the nuts. Nut movement represents an already compromised wheel but if this characteristic is utilised, it can provide the only method of visually identifying and resolving critical wheel detachment.

There are numerous respected forensic, engineering and association websites that analyse the loosening and detaching wheel issue in great detail. A UK Department of Transport commissioned report by the Transport Research Laboratory has estimated that in the UK alone:•7500-11,000wheel-fixingdefectsarerecordedannually (considerably more go unreported).•45percentareduetofailedwheelstuds.•23percentareduetowornstuds(duetofretting).•13percentareduetostrippedthreads.•4percentareduetocorrodedstuds.•15percentareduetootherdefects.

The consensus of opinion remains the same. Insufficient clamping force is the main reason wheels become detached.

It’s worth noting that issues citing ‘expansion and contraction’ or ‘vibration’ are marginal because a correctly assembled and torqued fixture retains enough preload within the uncompromised stud to provide the elasticity required to compensate. Consequently, testing products under these perfect conditions will always ensure a positive result. Redcat Industries, contrastingly, says it bases its designs on real-world situations.

As clamping force decreases, the rim frets against the resisting members, wasting the conical and DIN-spherical engagements or acting directly against the rim and stud in a hub-spigot assembly – it is not the nut rotation that causes the loose wheel, it is the decreased clamping force that allows rim movement behind the nut.

It is well acknowledged that this event will not be stopped by simply preventing the wheel nuts from turning. Consequently, if you visually emphasise any slight turning movement of the nut and then restrain it, you provide a much larger window of opportunity for identification and resolution.

The first image on this page (pic 1) is a classic and common example of a wheel assembly either over-or under-torqued, resulting in lost clamping force, rim ovality and stud wasting. Note the clear bright fretting tell-tales. As each stud fails the load is transferred onto the adjacent stud, accelerating the damage and resulting in the total failure also shown on this page (pic 2).

Quite clearly, as it is not the nut that has loosened, simply placing a basic nut restrainer on the wheel assembly would have achieved nothing other than to hide the developing event before total detachment due to stud or rim failure.

In some cases the fitting of static restrainers may create the impression of normality during a walk-around of the vehicle, especially if the device restricts the visual identification of fret mark tell-tales.

The third image on this page (pic 3) provides an example of Redcat’s dynamic indicator restrainers retaining and identifying any nut movement in a similar situation, providing a much larger window of opportunity for identification and resolution – and possibly retention of the fleet’s reputation.A summary of loose-wheel safety by the well renowned Bolt Science UK states the following:“The use of locking devices will not prevent relaxation and since the wheel integrity is dependent on the friction grip provided by the stud tension, the relative looseness of the wheel will damage the studs and will result in eventual wheel loss due to failure of the fixing.”

This statement, says Redcat, is the fundamental basis for its innovative and popular Australian indicator restrainers.

Get Atlas, get balancedAtlas Balance Company says its technology is a more cost-effective means of balancing tyres than traditional methods and can eliminate the uneven tyre wear caused by tyre imbalance, extending the useful life of tyres by up to 50 per cent, as well as providing better traction and improved braking performance.

Atlas Balance Kits mount directly behind the wheel assembly, keeping it out of harm’s way, unlike wheel-balance products that sit on the outer side of the hub and can be damaged. The company says the kits, unlike some wheel-balancing methods, are a one-off purchase that can be used time and time again throughout a fleet.

Atlas says the balance rings in its kits bring tyres into complete balance with every rotation of the wheel, regardless of speed or road conditions. It says they balance not only the tyres but also the wheel and wheel assembly.

Atlas Balance Company is proudly Australian owned, based in Queensland and its products are Australian made. It can send its products to all regions of the country through its retailers or straight to your door and all are covered by a 100-day money-back guarantee. Here’s what some of Atlas Balance Company’s top customers have to say:

“In the years working with the Atlas Balance Company team we have done many different trials of different pieces of equipment in our fleet. We have found that tyre wear with the Atlas Balance System has improved the tyre life by up to 30 per cent.

“A 30 per cent increase in tyre life is a great saving to the bottom line, which was very encouraging, as well as improving the driveability of the unit and the flow-on effect of helping with the driver-fatigue issues that we all need to deal with.

“We are pleased to be associated with the Atlas Balance Company and we look forward to more tyre cost savings in the future.”– Jim Gleeson, Workshop Manager, Nolan's Interstate Transport, Laverton North, Vic

“Since our trucks are on and off quarry roads every day, our tyre lifespan is restricted compared to others. After fitting a set of balance rings to the vehicles the change has been amazing, both in handling ability and tyre longevity. It’s truly a great product, saving on tyre life and downtime.”– Patrick Tripodi, Tripodi Transport, Sydney, NSW

We’ve all done it – lined up a funnel in a filler neck, carefully aligned the container and started to pour the precious contents into a designated hole. What could possibly go wrong?

Lots. Probably the most common drama is the funnel slipping sideways as a heavy pouring hand lets the liquid build up inside it, making it top-heavy and unstable.

Then what you learnt in school about centres of gravity and unstable shapes is clearly demonstrated. The funnel skews sideways, dumping its contents on the machinery, your boots and the floor. Any rapid footwork can see a catastrophic loss of traction from the spilt fluid, and all three – you, the container and the funnel – are on the floor.

This might be the stuff of lunchroom legends but it’s also frustrating, wasteful and can be highly dangerous if you’re dealing with hazardous or inflammable fluids.

We know there are existing tools to help avoid such disasters but having multiple funnels with different diameters only works if the one you need isn’t lost or being used by someone else. Ditto for funnel-mouth adaptors that seem to have lives of their own.

Macnaught, however, – a leading Australian fluid measurement, fluid transfer and lubrication-equipment manufacturer – says there is now a way to avoid becoming the butt of workshop jokes, its new Lubemate Universal Clamping Funnel.

As its name suggests, this solution ‘clamps’ to all typical sizes of fluid-transfer openings in vehicle, tractor and earthmoving machinery and gensets. The clamping range is from 25mm (one inch) to 80mm (three and one-eighths of an inch) and all diameters in between.

The clamping action is performed by spring-loaded, glass-reinforced-nylon ‘pliers’ that positively locate the funnel in the opening. Macnaught says it’s much easier to pour the fluid accurately with the funnel locked in place, and eliminates the risk of destabilising it. Pouring control is two-handed and a clear, see-through lower section allows easy monitoring of fluid flow to help avoid over-filling when pouring viscous liquids.

The Lubemate Universal Clamping Funnel features a strainer inside the neck to stop bits of bottle lid getting where they shouldn’t. There’s also a pointed foil punch to slit container security seals.

Macnaught says the polypropylene and polycarbonate components in the funnel material make it highly durable, easily cleaned and suitable for all viscosities of oil, as well as coolant, detergents, diesel and petrol.

Cooling systems can be difficult to flush completely due to accumulated debris from parts erosion, system neglect, incorrect or non-compatible coolants and electrolysis. Inadequate flushing can ruin a newly installed water pump and result in warranty problems and frustrated customers.

Gates Australia says you can make sure you perform a complete cooling system flush with its Power Clean Flush Tool (part no. 91002) featuring patented pulsing technology.

The Power Clean Flush Tool uses clean water and compressed air to ‘water hammer’ accumulated sludge and scale deposits without the use of harsh chemicals or solvents. Gates says it cleans radiators, heat exchangers, hoses and engine blocks more effectively than conventional flushes, maintaining system integrity and ensuring warranty coverage on replacement parts, including water pumps.

The Gates Power Clean Flush Tool’s patented process uses fixed dimensional control of the air and liquid flow paths. The process allows air to pressurise the cleaning fluid to scrub deep into corners and crevices, eliminating trapped debris. The ‘pulse’ is intensified with some limited back pressure but the pressure is immediately regulated to a safe level if a hard blockage exists, a feature that is designed to eliminate the possibility of heater-core damage from excessive system pressure.

WashTec Australia says its MaxiWash Combi is a new approach to a flexible and fast vehicle wash. The MaxiWash Combi combines a contour-tracking high-pressure wash with the option of a

gentle brush clean and is designed to suit every kind of commercial vehicle, including American primes, skels, concrete trucks, garbage trucks, tractors and mining vehicles.

WashTec says the MaxiWash Combi delivers squeaky-clean results in a short amount of time – its top washing speed of 14m per minute means it can complete two washes of an 18m commercial vehicle in about seven minutes, or more than 42 B-doubles in an eight-hour day. It’s one of the fastest utility vehicle washers of its kind.

The double mounting of the side brushes at the top and bottom of the MaxiWash Combi provide a constant, firm surface pressure and allow for an even brush guidance. The central overlapping function at the front and rear is designed to ensure cleanliness without stripes, and its spray rotation is designed to cope with any surface shape. Six pivot bearing rotors with full-jet nozzles are mounted above each other at each side of the arch to deliver a powerful clean. The pneumatic cylinders are used to switch over from front washing to rear washing.

For best results, WashTec offers a stainless-steel chemical arch and a foam arch that can be mounted either at the entrance of the washing bay or directly on the gantry. A regulation via a light barrier, for a targeted and economical use, is available as an option. An optional osmosis arch delivers better drying results with an extra sheen.

The MaxiWash Combi’s contour-tracking, high-pressure roof beam is 360-degrees rotatable, meaning it can follow each contour of the vehicle. WashTec says it can clean rugged surfaces and remove even the toughest grime.

The high-pressure beam, meanwhile, is mounted on vertical guide rails and is fixed by a flat belt. Optional Turbo Nozzles can be fitted to the contour-tracking high-pressure wash for an even more effective clean. A diverse range of programming options are available that use the pivoting high-pressure beam to follow the contours of even the most complex vehicles.

WashTec Australia will be exhibiting at the 2018 Megatrans Exhibition at the Melbourne Convention Centre from 10 to 12 May. Visit WashTec at stand number 5717.

More power, less maintenanceLemania Energy’s new Professional Battery-Less Jump Starter for 12V engines is based on new super-capacitor technology, so it doesn’t have an internal battery that needs regular replacing.

The Professional Battery-Less Jump Starter contains 18 capacitors of 600 Farad each. Australian importer OzSwiss European Tools says this makes it more powerful than most jump starters based on the same technology.

The new jump starter features an 8000A peak current and maximum continuous-cranking capacity of 1400A. It is suitable for all petrol engines up to 6.0-litres and diesel engines up to 3.5 litres.

OzSwiss says it delivers super-fast charging from a running engine on another vehicle or stand-alone battery within 10-120 seconds and that the remaining power in an otherwise flat battery is often sufficient to recharge the jump starter, which then can jump start the same vehicle.

The Professional Battery-Less Jump Starter is designed to shut-off when it is fully charged to avoid overcharging. It features a digital display and reverse polarity buzzer to prevent damage

due to incorrect terminal connections, as well as a safety-fuse, short-circuit breaker, heavy-duty brass clamps and thick (25 mm²) copper cables measuring 108cm.

It also features dedicated clamp holders and comes supplied with a fully automatic smart charger for charging from 220V power socket (this increases the charge time).

The Professional Battery-Less Jump Starter is made in Switzerland, features a strong ABS casing for durability and weighs just 5kg. Because it has no internal battery that needs regular replacing, it is totally maintenance-free. OzSwiss says it has a service life of 10 years and one million cycles.

The Professional Battery-Less Jump Starter is available from OzSwiss European Tools and its authorised distributors across Australia and, as part of an introductory offer, includes a bonus Hella 12V rechargeable light.

As business gets tougher, trucking companies and mechanical repair shops must look to improve their bottom line and increase work throughput to keep ahead of the competition.

Using mobile hydraulic column lifts can help in these areas while also providing flexibility in the workplace. These units can be moved around and stored in an area no bigger than two pallet spaces when not in use. A more organised workplace with no need for dangerous pits also helps with throughput and makes for a safer workplace in OH&S terms.

The new AETL 7.5W Wireless Mobile Column Lift – now available from workshop equipment importers Autoequip Australia – is able to lift 7.5 tonnes per column. These powerful units can be used in combination to work on cars, trucks (including B-doubles), buses, tractors and even earthmovers because they can be configured to synchronise in sets of two, four, six or eight columns.

The column lifts are also available in economical cable and combination wireless-and-cable versions. They come with a five-year warranty on steel and two-year warranty on parts, and are supplied with a service kit.

AETL 7.5W Wireless Mobile Column Lifts provide a comfortable working height of 1.7 m (maximum). Pairing units can be moved around to accommodate all possible vehicle widths and variable wheel diameters.

One of the more important characteristics of the AETL 7.5W is its wireless feature. No cables are needed to connect the units, allowing the operator to connect the lifts to each other using state-of-the-art wireless technology. Minimal set-up is required because the column lifts’ control panels synchronise with each other and even self-calibrate via any of the panels on each column. The ergonomic control panel can be used to work one or multiple units for easier, quicker operation.

Each truck lift comes with a sturdy geared motor featuring thermo protection, which is designed to soft start for safe load-handling. Lifting speed is 1.26m/min (21mm/sec).

AETL 7.5W Wireless Mobile Column Lifts are available in single and three-phase versions and are charged while not in use. Autoequip says a charge can last up to two weeks depending on use.

Each unit comes with a hydraulic-lift mechanism for added manoeuverability. The column lifts are designed for indoor and outdoor use, can operate at a temperature range of minus 5ºC to 40ºC and four columns can fit neatly into two pallet spaces when not in use, freeing up workshop space.

Autoequip also imports other mobile column truck lifts that require wired connection between units. These range from four tonnes to eight tonnes per column.

Ikon Lifting Equipment says its ‘take anywhere’ Stertil wireless mobile column lifts provide innovative solutions not just for road-transport applications but rail, sea, air and warehouse-stores usage.

The company’s latest innovation for full container lifting can be seen at the upcoming MegaTrans 2018 show from May 10 to 12 at Melbourne Exhibition Centre (stand 3912).

Ikon says regular importers of container lots no longer need fixed, in-place overhead cranes or to utilise side-loaders with the attendant costs of delivery and collection. It says Stertil columns can lift full containers off delivery trucks and load the empty back for returns, then be used for fast and efficient servicing of the company’s vehicles.

Stertil wireless column lifts are made in the Netherlands and are designed to lift up to 550 tonnes in one lift, as well as low-clearance objects such as low-floor buses, aircraft tugs or nut-harvesting vehicles. Ikon says transportable buildings can be lifted high enough in one to two minutes to allow comprehensive inspection and loading onto transport without the cost of crane hire. It says their thoughtful design and accessories make light work of many tasks and their ease of relocation from site to site is an added bonus. Sets of up to 32 columns are available in 7.5, 8.5, 10, 13 and 17.5-tonne SWL per column.

Ikon has also recently released another development, motorised column lifts. Powered by two 12V batteries in each Stertil column lift, they are designed to be effortlessly moved around a workshop or positioned against a vehicle due to the factory-regulated speed setting and braking system built into the design. Ikon says the small power draw does not materially affect the lift cycles obtained from a full battery charge, while the built-in 230V battery charger allows a 60 per cent charge to be achieved in one hour and a full charge overnight. The batteries in all Stertil wireless column lifts are widely available in the marketplace.

The motorised lifts’ synchronous lifting/descent program is designed to overcome load-distribution problems and the latest Zigbee wireless mesh technology to completely overcome the data traffic generated by nearby mobile-phone towers. The large 7-inch diagnostic screen on every column lift tells the operator the size and status of the set in use at a glance, and the numerous safety features required in railway and mining applications are all standard.

Ikon says its 24/7 Service Hotline ensures operators can overcome any stoppages with minimum downtime. Critical parts are stocked in all mainland capital cities and local service agents, and all original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts are available for same-day despatch from a central warehouse.

Other new Stertil products available from Ikon include Skylift platform lifts (20-35-tonne SWL in single or tandem format) and ECOlift scissor lifts. Come and discuss them all at Megatrans 2018 stand 3912 between 10 and 12 May.

European Truck Bus and Light Commercial Parts

Sindaco Air Brake Company Pty Ltd was established in 1994 and is an importer, reconditioner and distributor of brake parts for Japanese, European and American commercial vehicles.

Sindaco’s extensive range of aftermarket Japanese air-brake products is imported directly from its own manufacturer, Sindaco Taiwan, and includes air masters, foot valves, clutch packs, spring brakes, governor valves, relay valves, check valves, drain valves, air dryers and all associated repair kits.

In conjunction with Sindaco Taiwan, the company has developed a range of valves and repair kits specifically for the Australian market over the years. This includes repair kits and valving for less popular imports that official dealer networks often don’t want to know about owing to the fact they did not come through their dealer network when new.

Sindaco says it has broken its range of Airmaster and Hydromaster repair kits into sizings, so it can work out just what the repair kit fits even if the identification tag is missing by sizing the unit.

Sindaco offers a comprehensive range of locally sourced aftermarket Japanese truck and bus spare parts, including brake lining, brake drums, wheel studs and nuts, wheel cylinders and repair kits, axle and hub

seals, master cylinders and repair kits, pins and bushes and air, oil and fuel filters. For American and European air-brake needs it stocks compressors, air dryers, foot valves, relay valves, brake boosters, air fittings and associated repair kits.

Sindaco is also a distributor and stockist of Wabco, Knorr-Bremse, Haldex, Meritor and Bosch, plus other brands of truck and bus spare parts. It has a comprehensive range of new and reconditioned Meritor and Knorr-Bremse air disc-brake calipers in stock, as well as a comprehensive range of genuine spare parts to suit them.

Sindaco’s reconditioning facility performs all forms of reconditioning, from brake-shoe relining and machining, brake calipers and foot-brake valves to brake boosters, relay valves and four-way valves.

It says its brake relining and machine room – featuring a newly acquired production riveting machine that is 25 per cent faster than a conventional riveter – is the most modern in Australia, while its profiling machine accommodates brake shoes in pairs to give the perfect brake diameter and squareness to the brake lining. It says it also has the equipment to machine brake drums with or without the hub attached.

Sindaco says it can overhaul anything from

a car’s wheel cylinder and calipers that take two men to pick up to any truck or bus air valve. It even overhauls the Wabco & Carlisle hydraulic calipers that come off the container straddles for Patrick Stevedoring.

Sindaco’s customer base ranges from Mareeba in the north of Queensland and Melbourne in the south to Perth in the west and towns in between. It says it can send anything from a 1kg air bag to a pallet of any size anywhere in Australia or the world.

When you have a heavy-duty task you need your equipment to be just as heavy-duty.

Whether you are working with rail, truck, bus, military or special vehicles, there are certain crucial characteristics you need to consider when selecting a heavy-vehicle hoist. We run through them here with leading Australian hoist manufacturer Endurequip.

QualityQuality is a vital point to consider with a heavy-vehicle hoist. Endurequip says a hoist that includes the highest quality RUD chain can significantly increase the lifespan of the product, require less maintenance and provide greater safety to your employees, saving money in the long run and boosting productivity.Endurequip says it designs its Portalift hoists to work right along with you, using the finest materials and best in efficient design. It says this leads to:•Increaseddurability–Endurequipsaysitshoistshave a design life of 25 years.•Flexibility–Eachsystemiscompletelydustproofandwater resistant, so you can set up anywhere (IP65 rating).•Lessmaintenance–FeaturessuchasaspecialRUD calibrated high-quality chain drive help to reduce maintenance and wear on your equipment. So you can keep right on working without any break in productivity.•Strong–Endurequipsaysitshoistsaredesignedto anticipate every heavy-vehicle scenario and address it.All Endurequip hoists are entirely Australian made, and come with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty and ongoing local service and support.

SafetyCreating a safe work environment is a legal requirement and critical to the long-term success of a business. At the end of the day, your team is your most valuable asset and safety should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds when selecting a hoist system.

Endurequip says protecting valuable team members is its highest priority and that’s why its products feature every safety consideration possible. All of its heavy-vehicle hoists meet with all Australian and New Zealand safety standards and come equipped with a constant safety system that is independent of the drive system, as well as emergency stops, a keyed safety lock and dual-control options (‘on-post’ and remote) to give the operator the choice of where they want to be, safely.

Ease to useWhy make things harder than they need to be? A complicated hoist system leads to more technicians having to work on the system and installation taking longer than it needs to, leading to loss of money, time and productivity.Portalift says its hoists are designed to make life easier with the following features:•Acompactstructurethatcanbequicklymovedtoany location with no installation.•Aclearcontrolpanelthatletsyouconfigureyoursetup exactly how you need it.•Systemsthatareelectricratherthanelectronic, soyou don’t need a specialist to understand them.

TechnologyEndurequip says being simple doesn’t mean you have to forgo cutting-edge engineering and that its Portalift hoists have the latest design features, including radio frequency identification device (RFID) chip installation, technology that allows you to track your service records or operation manuals.

FlexibilityFlexibility inside and outside a workshop cannot be understated. A flexible solution saves time, money and increases productivity.

Endurequip says this is why it’s designed the Portalift system to be easy to utilise inside or outside the workshop with no installation required. Plus, because it is completely mobile, the system can be relocated to another worksite or new premises if required.

All Portalift hoists come with a remote pendant control, plus on-post control, for independent hoist operation. These fully portable hoists can be moved to any area of the workshop floor for immediate use and are designed to offer complete mobility of movement. The hoist posts can be raised or lowered individually, in pairs or all together.

Portalift hoists are used by leading heavy-vehicle manufacturers, as well as local and state governments and major mining and railway companies. They have been used extensively throughout Australia by the Australian Defence Force since 1993, and are now in use by the NZ Defence Force.

How to select the best heavy-vehicle hoist

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has advised that workshops must now use dynamic weight to assess the efficiency of a heavy vehicle’s braking system, and that both static and dynamic weight and deceleration must be shown on the report.

So which roller brake tester should you choose for your workshop? In this story, Levanta’s brake-testing experts help us explore the issues to be aware of, and demonstrate which equipment you need to perform the right kind of test.

What’s the difference between static and dynamic testing?1. Static weight: This is the weight measured when a vehicle’s axle is first put onto the brake tester. It is, in effect, the dead weight once the wheels enter the roller bed and the vehicle is simply sitting there.2. Dynamic weight: This is the weight measured at the point where the test is terminated by either the wheels slipping by about 30 per cent on average. (The actual slip range is 27 per cent, plus or minus three per cent, but let’s call it 30 per cent). 3. Static deceleration: This is the deceleration of the axle or vehicle using static weight (i.e. the weight measured when the axle/vehicle is put into the rollers).4. Dynamic deceleration: This is the deceleration of the axle or vehicle using dynamic weight (i.e. the weight as measured at the point of termination of the test).

Deceleration can be displayed as metres per second per second (M/S/S or M/S2). Alternative metrics are kilonewtons per ton (kN/T) and per cent of gravity (%g).

M/S2 and kN/T work out to be the same mathematical answer (i.e. 4.4 kN/T = 4.4 M/S2) while %g is a fraction higher (in reference to 4.4 M/S2 = 45%g) due to the allowance for gravity.

Kilonewtons per ton is the easiest way to explain how it works, however, so we will use it in this example.

When the brakes of a vehicle are applied on a roller brake tester, they try to stop the wheel from turning and therefore also try to stop the rollers. The force that is generated by the brakes being applied is measured in kilonewtons.

Measuring axle weight for brake testingThe other factor required to get a measurement is the weight of the axle. As you have probably guessed, there are also two choices here: static weight and dynamic weight.

Reactive suspension is a suspension type (usually a trailing-arm suspension) that reacts when used in a roller brake tester. Due to the physics of testing using rollers, there is a tendency for the wheel or wheels in the rollers to be lifted out of the rollers and pushed backward.

With a traditional suspension there is minimal weight change because the energy is dissipated within the axle. There is often a slight weight increase with traditional or steel-sprung suspensions.

With trailing-arm suspensions, however, the weight shift is more pronounced, with the weight being shifted to other axles on the axle group (a bit like a lever being used to lift the axle). This causes, in some cases, in excess of a 40 per cent reduction in the weight (compared to static weight) at the point of termination of the test.

Using the example of kN/T, the result is calculated: BF/Wt=Dec, where BF is brake force (in kN), Wt is weight in tons and Dec is deceleration.

Why static and dynamic weight mattersAdding some actual numbers to this equation, we get the following examples:Total static weight of the vehicle = 10 tons, total brake force = 44kN. Total dynamic weight = 7.5 tons.Using this, there are two possible results:•Staticdeceleration(BF/Wt=Dec)44/10=4.4kN/T,and;•Dynamicdeceleration44/7.5=5.87kN/T.

As you can see, the dynamic weight/deceleAration generates a higher number of kN/T.

The requirements under the NHVR are for a minimum of 4.4 kN/T (or M/S/S). In this example, the static deceleration would just pass, while the dynamic deceleration would provide a healthy pass.

The challenge of testing a trailer or light vehicleThere’s an extra challenge involved when you’re testing the brakes on a trailer or light vehicle. Of course, due to the nature of haulage, trailers need to weigh as little as possible in order to maximise the load they can carry.

This creates a problem because in Australia there is no requirement to have a load on the vehicle when it’s tested. As a result, the trailers are usually very light and do not provide sufficient weight on the rollers to achieve an accurate result where static weight is used. When put into the random brake tester unladen, they are likely to slip early and terminate the test before the maximum braking-force reading is achieved.

Due to the large number of trailers with reactive suspensions in Australia, the NHVR has instructed the industry not to use dynamic weight/deceleration alone in the evaluation of all vehicles over 4.5 tons gross vehicle mass (GVM).

It is still a requirement to display static weight and deceleration on the reports as well – but dynamic weight is used for the evaluation.

What to consider when investing in a roller brake testerWhen you’re weighing up different roller brake testers, Levanta says you should consider the equipment’s ability to measure both static and dynamic weight so you can tick all the boxes when testing and make sure you meet NHVR requirements. It says it’s also a good idea to consider future-proofing your investment to handle any potential changes that the NHVR may require in the future, such as:•Artificialloadsimulation.•Air-pressuretesting.

Should you carry out static or dynamic roller brake testing?

Service Engineering Bulletin SB043Head Gaskets and Sealing Compounds

Engine Australia technical

One of the most common causes of head gasket failures (composite and MLS) is the application of sealing compounds to the gaskets at the point of cylinder head installation. The more common of the compounds used include Hylomar® or similar, Kopr Kote® or similar, RTV silicon sealants (silastic), silver frost spray paint and clear spray enamel. Most, if not all, gasket manufacturers will not warrant failed head gaskets that have had sealing compounds applied to them. The exception to this is some copper head gaskets, head gasket saver shims or where it is specified explicitly by the manufacturer.

Hylomar® is a non-setting and non-hardening jointing compound recommended for cylinder head shims, inlet manifolds and other similar style gaskets that are not pre-coated by the manufacturer. Like any sealant, it acts as a lubricant and therefore reduces surface friction. It is specifically not to be used on single torque head gaskets. Kopr Kote® and similar products are low-friction anti-seize lubricants manufactured from a combination of micro-size copper flakes and graphite, dispersed in a water-resistant grease and are fortified with anti-oxidants. They are a thread anti-seize and have no legitimate application in sealing gaskets. RTV silicone sealants (silastic) must not be used on head gaskets, other than where some manufactures require very small amounts of special formulations on the timing gear housing to cylinder block joint line. Silver frost spray paint and clear spray enamel also have no application on typical head gaskets.

Victor Reinz gaskets advises that, ‘the use of additional sealing compounds will destroy composite head gaskets through tearing or breaking of its composite material. In particular, this is true for the area around the Viton®

element because, as the engine warms up and cools down, the additional compound prevents the element expanding into the spaces provided. The results are tearing of the material and/or breakage of the Viton® element. MLS cylinder-head gaskets are designed individually to suit specific engines. Beads, stoppers, elastomer coatings, and partially vulcanized or molded-on elements are adapted precisely down to the µm. Sealing compounds may or may not cure and harden, but they will change the coating thickness which results in leaks. What’s more, they can flow into oil and coolant channels, where they cause clogging. Sealing compounds applied in the combustion chamber area will burn out and impair the bead’s function, resulting in head gasket failure.’

Fel-Pro gaskets advises that, ‘most cylinder head gaskets are coated with Teflon®, Viton® or silicone-based materials to improve the ‘cold seal’ properties of the engine, so the engine doesn’t leak fluids before the engine is first started. They caution that chemical sealers can react adversely with these coating materials, preventing the gasket from cold sealing properly. This chemical reaction can also cause the gasket to deteriorate and fail. Chemical sealers - including adhesives, shellac, tacky sealers and RTV silicone - should never be applied to soft faced, coated head gaskets. However, embossed steel shim and the new multi-layered shim steel ‘rubber coated embossed’ (RCE) head gaskets, may require a sealer in certain locations when specified. Fel-Pro also affirms that RTV silicone sealants (silastic) must not be used on head gaskets.’

In summary, sealing compounds must NEVER be used on head gaskets unless specified by the manufacturer or warranty will be automatically voided.
