The Bruce Trail communityis an important member ofmy extended family. Inmy experience, familiessupport each other, spendtime with each other, and

work together to protect familial traditionsand treasures. The Bruce Trail family isexactly that. We are working together toprotect our treasure, the NiagaraEscarpment, while spending time togeth-er along the Bruce Trail. When I first started hiking the Trail asa child, with my parents and siblings, Ihad no idea how important the BruceTrail would feature in my life. This past year, under pandemic restric-tions, we find ourselves spending evenmore time than usual with immediatefamily, or perhaps not enough timebecause of physical distance or loss. Inchallenging times we are reminded ofthose things we value most in life.Family, in the many ways we define it,continues to be a cornerstone of support.

The Bruce Trail Conservancy’s verymission – preserving a ribbon of wilder-ness, for everyone, forever – reminds usof two key characteristics of families.Firstly, our mission speaks to our desireand our commitment to leave a betterfuture for the generations that follow us.We are building on the work of our earli-est founders, including Dr. PhilipGosling who continues to lead a life oflegacy (see page 6). And the results ofour collective efforts today will be felt farinto the future. Our mission also speaks to inclusive-ness – ‘for everyone’. As we grow ourBruce Trail family and seek to provide aTrail and an organization for all, we arecommitted to promoting an inclusivecommunity that is welcoming of all peo-ple. We’ll work to nurture diversity, inclusion and equity in all aspects of ourwork and to share the actions we are tak-ing in upcoming issues. It is thrilling and inspiring to see howour Bruce Trail family has grown in

recent months (see page 7). A deep andsincere welcome to all the new memberswho have joined us, and thank you toall our renewing and lifetime membersfor your ongoing support. In the pages ahead you’ll meet just afew of the many families of members, volunteers, donors and landowners whohave made the Bruce Trail part of theirlives and who are giving back to supportour mission. You’ll also read about ourinternational families of the World TrailsNetwork and the UNESCO WorldBiosphere Reserves. Thank you for being part of our BruceTrail family. •

A special message from Dr. Philip R. GoslingCo-Founder and Honorary President, Bruce Trail Conservancy

I want to share with you a decision I have made with the hope that it willprompt you to join me. I have been on the path to protect nature and theNiagara Escarpment for over 60 years. It is part of my personal “end toend” journey and I plan to finish this life interest with a gift to the BruceTrail Conservancy in my will.

As a child growing up in the country, my greatest pleasure was toclimb an old oak tree in our garden, listen to the wind in the leaves andwatch the birds flit from branch to branch and sing the joy of spring. Idreamed of birding, travel and adventure in far lands. Yes, these earlyexperiences with nature grew and led me to many adventures withpeople and the desire to protect our own land.

So it was along the way I met naturalist Ray Lowes and heardabout his exciting idea to save the Niagara Escarpment by building ahiking trail that would engage the public and highlight nature’simportance. At that time, it was described as a dream with little sensethat it would become true, let alone become a key part of Ontario’sGreenbelt with recognition as a UNESCO World Biosphere.

As a supporter of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, I believe you share asimilar love of nature, and the many gifts it brings to our lives.

We have come so far because of your generous support, but we cannot take theprotection of the Niagara Escarpment and access to our marvelous trail for granted.

As urban development continues around us, the efforts to preserve our environment become more important than ever.We must anticipate change in land ownership and development pressures and prepare to step in when opportunity arises tosecure our Bruce Trail.

My hope is that by saving the Niagara Escarpment, we will permanently protect irreplaceable habitats andspecies. We will pass on the joys we have experienced to future generations. And, we will ensure this ribbonof wilderness is protected forever and available for all to enjoy.

So I have thought about what I can still do to achieve our dream at this point in my life. At 92 years of age, I am wellbeyond knocking on doors or maintaining a section of trail.

Fortunately, Canada has been good to me. And so, I have included the Bruce Trail Conservancy in my will. I hope youwill consider doing the same.

I understand that a decision like this one is deeply personal with many considerations. Regardless of where you are inyour life, a gift in your will is a powerful commitment today to the future work of the Bruce Trail Conservancy. It gives me great satisfaction that I can yet again be part of an exceptional community of volunteers and supporters. By joining me, you can help to build a better world for future generations.

What a journey we have had so far. Thank you for your company and participation along the way.

Sincerely,

2006 - Opening of the Philip Gosling Side Trail

Two van Nostrand families, whose patriarchs

were second cousins, were integral in the

creation of Pine River Nature Reserve through

the generous donation of their properties.

Since the 1950s Innes and Felicia van Nostrand owned 86acres in Mulmur on the southwest corner of Prince of WalesRoad and 15 Sideroad. Innes and Felicia generously allowedpassage of Bruce Trail on their land for many years. The prop-

erty was the site of many family gatherings, where memorieswere made, and where friendships were forged through hik-ing, camping, and a love of nature. In particular, for twodecades the site was used frequently by scouting groups forcamping during all four seasons. This past year, the familymade the decision to pass the land to the Bruce TrailConservancy, through a combination purchase and dona-tion, so that it would continue to connect people to thebeauty of the Pine River Valley for generations to come.

Peter and Janet van Nostrand, from another branch ofthe van Nostrand family, owned 50 forested acres on theopposite corner of the same crossroads. There they builttheir family cottage, lovingly named “Holly Park”. BothPeter and Janet spent their final days in this special placethat has been in Janet’s family for five generations. A 12-acreportion of this property was donated to the Bruce TrailConservancy after Peter’s passing last year. The Kilgorie SideTrail will be rerouted onto the property so that hikers will beable to explore the forests and waterways that were so spe-cial to this family. The Bruce Trail Conservancy is honoured to be entrustedwith the stewardship of these properties as part of Pine RiverNature Reserve.

Like many of you, I grew up on the Bruce

Trail, always living near the Iroquoia,

Toronto, and now Caledon Hills sections.

In lieu of family game days, we spent our

time identifying trees, catching glimpses

of Ontario birds, listening to the

crunching of snow under our feet, and

taking in the captivating autumn aroma

of decaying leaves.

Your Bruce Trail Story

Weekends and trips focused on the outdoors, as my Dad was adevoted volunteer for the Bruce Trail. We camped in thewilderness, and hiked for hours chatting, running, dancingand jumping across the trail. I remember the excitement of uskids helping my Dad set up a Bruce Trail trivia fundraiser, inviting everyone we knew, it was a huge hit! My Dad proudlyframed pictures of the event, as it was one of his proudestachievements. He would spend his spare time cleaning up thetrail and meeting with the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club team onfuture acquisition and conservation of the trail. Dad led hisfamily by example on how to maintain Ontario’s naturalareas, with a lot of love, sweat, and working with your hands. Unexpectedly, I received heart-breaking call just afterChristmas 2018. My healthy, active, nature-loving Dad hadsuddenly passed away. In the weeks that followed, theoutreach from the community was truly remarkable. It wasonly fitting that his celebration of life focused around theBruce Trail. From pictured memories of our time as a family onthe trail, to old Bruce Trail memorabilia, and of course, thosecherished framed trivia fundraising event photos. The obviouschoice was for my Dad’s community to donate to the BruceTrail Conservancy in honour of his life. I remember the BruceTrail Conservancy employees were sensitive and so helpful atsetting this up for us as donations poured in.

Olivia and John Mann make a special family announcement on the Bruce Trail.

So, in 2019 my husband and I set off on a healing journeyto complete the Bruce Trail. We scribbled down memories ofour surroundings, how we felt that day in the trail, and whatwe learned from it in my Dad’s hiking journal. Friends, family, and strangers joined us on the Bruce Trail both in gorgeoussummer heat, and on freezing winter days. We even plannedto complete the Jeju Olle this past summer in South Korea aspart of the BTC’s Friendship Trail initiative. Of course thisnever happened with COVID-19 restrictions, and as a frontline worker, my soul has yearned for the “Shinrin Yoku” of theforest. However, in darkness there is always light, and lifemade way for another exciting milestone. It only seemed appropriate to make our big announcementon the soil of the Bruce Trail, arriving May 2021! As I type this, wiping happy warm tears from my eyes at allthe memories made on the Bruce Trail, I’m beyond thankful tothose that came before us, who saw the necessity of preserving

this breathtaking trail. As the newest member swirls anddances in my belly as I write this, I’m confident that my Dad’slegacy lives on exactly how he intended: To preserve a ribbonof wilderness, for everyone, forever. •

We’re excited to introduce to you one of themost spectacular properties we’ve ever had thechance to preserve, Cape Chin Nature Reserve.

With 533 acres of iconic Bruce Peninsula landscape, abreathtaking 270-degree view of Georgian Bay, and 1.8kilometers of the Bruce Trail’s Optimum Route, this is anatural masterpiece and a true conservation gem.

Cape Chin Nature Reserve represents the largest soloacquisition in Bruce Trail Conservancy history. And wewant you to be a part of it!

Together we will: • Protect one of the last remaining large tracts of land on the

Bruce Peninsula and avoid the fragmentation of critical forestand wetland habitats.

• Save critical natural spaces for Species at Risk.• Restore overgrazed pasture lands, monitor wetlands, and

remove invasive species.• Re-route the Bruce Trail to lay lightly on this land, offering a

fantastic hiking experience for generations to come.

Stewarding and Restoring Cape Chin

Maintaining the ecological health of Cape Chin NatureReserve will require careful stewarding and in somecases, active restoration. Plans are in place for:

• Extensive native tree plantings to increase interior foresthabitat for wildlife.

• Rehabilitation of pasture lands with local native wildflowerand grass species to increase habitat for pollinators andgrass-nesting birds.

• Species at Risk inventory.• Wetland monitoring, with specific attention to turtle

populations. • Removal and control of invasive species.

The Bruce Trail Conservancy has long recognized theincredible ecological value and recreational potential of CapeChin. When the property became available on the openmarket, the need to preserve and protect these irreplaceablenatural lands was urgent. The Bruce Trail Conservancy movedquickly to acquire the land so that this opportunity forconservation and environmentally responsible public accesswould not be lost.

Our land acquisition and stewardship successes are notpossible without the generous support of our community.Several lead donors have already contributed an incredible70% of the $4 million cost to acquire and restore the new Cape Chin Nature Reserve. Your contribution can help take usthe rest of the way there.

Won’t you join us and help make conservation history today?

• Leave what you find: Remind kids toavoid taking things home, disturbingwildlife or picking living plants.Instead, encourage them to draw ortake a photo of what they find.

• Reflect: Ask questions about whatthey’ve discovered. Encourage them toshare what they’ve seen, felt, smelled, heard and so on.

Extension for older kidsConsider downloading the iNaturalistapp and encourage kids to use it to helpidentify the plants, trees, tracks, andcreatures they discover. They can evenadd their discoveries along the BruceTrail to the BTC’s iNaturalist project andcontribute as young citizen scientists.

Spending time outdoors with the kids in your life is a great opportunity to makememories, get exercise and fresh air, and foster a real connection to the naturalworld. And springtime, with its warming weather, longer days, and burgeoninglife, is a wonderful time to make the most of all those things.

Whether you are just getting startedhiking with kids or have been hiking asa family for years, here are a fewactivities to help.

OUTDOOR SCAVENGER HUNTA nature-based scavenger hunt is atimeless classic and a fun way tostructure your next outing with kids.Check out the Bruce Trail ScavengerHunt on the next page, or create one ofyour own.

Ways to use a scavenger hunt• Along the Bruce Trail or any hiking

trail to encourage exploration andobservation.

• As an outdoor birthday party game.

• On a camping trip, in a neighborhoodpark, or even in your backyard.

• As an incentive to get outdoors, anytime. Kids love the challenge andthe fun of checking off theirdiscoveries.

Tips for scavenger hunts• Be Prepared: Make sure everyone has

the right kind of clothes and footwear.Pack extra layers, lots of snacks, andwater, even on a short hike.

• Follow their lead: Observe naturethrough the eyes of your youngcompanion. For kids, it truly is thejourney, not the destination. Remindyourself of that, then explore withthem, one small wonder at a time.

Private Landowner Considerations• Dogs wandering on private land along

the Bruce Trail can lead to strainedrelations between landowners and theBruce Trail Conservancy. It can evenresult in parts of the Trail closingpermanently if landowners no longerwish to host the Trail.

• Respect all signage. Some landowners –especially those with cattle or withdogs of their own – have specificallyrequested that dogs be leashed orprohibited on the Trail through theirland.

It’s the law in several places• In most parks and conservation areas

through which the Bruce Trail passes, dogs are required to be leashed at alltimes.

2. Pack out your dog’s wasteDog waste is more than a nuisance tohikers on the Trail: it also causes waterquality issues and negative health effectsfor humans and wildlife. Please pack outall dog waste. Carry your dog waste bags with you, even if you are hiking out and back on aparticular segment. Use a smell-resistantcontainer like an old Pringles can, or letyour dog carry it out in her own backpack. Remember, dog poop:• Degrades but is not a natural part of

Niagara Escarpment ecosystems.• Contains pathogens, parasites, and

medications that are not natural.• Is carried by rainwater and snowmelt

directly into waterways, where it causesbacterial contamination.

• Is nitrogen-rich so it depletes oxygenlevels in water and soil, hurting fishand other wildlife.

AFTER THE HIKE1. Remove dirt and seeds from paws and furInvasive plants and insects can spread tonew areas by hitching a ride on fur andpaws. Once you finish your hike, carefully inspect your dog’s paws andbrush your dog’s fur to remove any dirt, plants, seeds or bugs.

2. Check for ticksTicks are active anytime the temperatureis 4°C or higher. Check your dog (and allhikers) for ticks after each hike.

Have fun and stay safe on the trails withyour dog.

Hiking with your dog can be a wonderful way to explore theoutdoors and strengthen your bond with your furry familymember. As a pet owner and trail user, you a have a few extraresponsibilities to the Trail, its environment and fellow users.

Please keep these tips in mind so you canhave a “pawsitive” experience with yourpet on the Bruce Trail.

BEFORE THE HIKE1. Know where dogs are allowedDogs are allowed on most parts of theBruce Trail. However, in a handful ofareas dogs are prohibited at the requestof the landowner. Learn where dogs areprohibited at brucetrail.org/pages/dogs-on-the-trail, or on your Bruce TrailReference maps, or through signs on theproperty.

2. Make sure your dog is readyConsider the difficulty of the hike andthe age, ability and experience of yourdog. Some hikes may involve stiles (set ofsteps for getting over fences), or ladders,or other difficult terrain.

3. Be preparedPack food, water, and accessories thatwill keep your dog energized, hydrated, and comfortable. Don’t forget your dogwaste bags, and a towel for post-hikecleaning.

ON THE TRAIL1. Keep your dog on leash Keeping your dog on a leash on theBruce Trail, even if they’re off-leashtrained, is important for a few reasons.

Your Dog’s Safety• Natural dangers exist along the Trail

including steep drops, ledges, noxiousplants, and wildlife (including skunksand coyotes).

Safety and Comfort of Fellow Hikers &Fellow Dogs• Not all Bruce Trail users are

comfortable with dogs. And not alldogs are friendly with other dogs.

Wildlife Considerations• Off-leash dogs can harass and injure

native wildlife. Even a non-contactchase can cause a bird or animal towaste vital energy needed for breedingor foraging.

• Off-leash dogs can be attacked bystartled or predatory animals. Rabies,Giardia, distemper and parvovirus canbe contracted from encounters withwildlife.

Volunteering as a family is an excellent way to bring everyonetogether. It can close the gap between ages and interests, while doing good things for the causes we care about.

FAMILY VOLUNTEERING

On the Bruce Trail, many trailmaintenance, land stewardship andcitizen science activities are a great fitfor families since they can be done on aflexible schedule and tasks can bedivided according to ages and skills inthe family team.

The Magolan Family: 3 GenerationsVolunteering on the TrailMeet the Magolan Family. They haveturned their trail outings into opportuni-ties for the whole family to volunteer forthe Bruce Trail Conservancy. We askedKate Magolan to share a little more abouther experience volunteering with herhusband, children, and father Ken Lowe.

How do you and your family volunteer forthe Bruce Trail Conservancy?I began volunteering in 2018 as a TrailMonitor. I am now a Trail Captain forsection A04 and A04A in the Iroquoiasection. Often I do this work with mydad. He joins me so I’m not alone on thetrail and it’s great to spend this time withhim. Other times I’m volunteering withmy husband and kids, Waverly (5 yearsold) and Wallace (10 years old). When Waverly was too little to hike mysection she would go in the carrypack. Now that the kids are bigger they explore

and notice the details of the area alongthe trails that I might miss if I was justout by myself doing trail maintenance. Volunteering with the kids is also anopportunity to teach them what I do onthe trail and why it’s important. My sonhas his own clippers and helps me keepovergrowth at bay. We always bring agarbage bag to help with any clean up.The kids are learning how to dress forthe trail in different seasons and how tofollow the blazes.

What inspired you to volunteer for the BTC?I grew up in Grimsby. Starting evenbefore I could walk, my parents took mysister and I for hikes on the Bruce Trail atleast once a month. While in highschool, my cross country team trained onthe Bruce Trail. I also spent a lot of myyouth hiking with friends on the trailsand along creeks. I truly appreciate howlucky I was to grow up so close to a trailsystem and natural area. I want to giveback and help preserve the trail so futuregenerations have access to it as I did.

What do you like most about theexperience?Meeting new people through volunteer-ing has been my favourite part of theexperience. I was introduced to other

7 reasons to volunteeras a family• Spend meaningful time

together.

• Pass along values.

• Inspire action for causes.

• Learn beyond theclassroom.

• Bring multiple generationstogether.

• Learn from and learn abouteach other.

• Start new traditions.

volunteers who are always happy to joinme for a hike or help out on my sectionwhen something needs attending to.Also, when I’m out on my section oftrail I like meeting hikers. It’s interestingto discover where people are from andhow far on the trail they are going.

What would you tell someone who isthinking about volunteering for the BTCwith their family or without?I would say, do it. Being a volunteer forthe Bruce Trail Conservancy has been avery positive experience for me and myfamily. My kids appreciate how lucky weare to have trails right in our town andit keeps us out and hiking monthly nomatter what the weather! My dad and Ihave enjoyed walking trails that henever had the chance to hike when hewas younger. It feels good to help out anorganization that is preserving thenature around us and building the trailsthat allow us to enjoy it. •

that no one participating organizationcan accomplish alone.” One of the signature initiatives of theWorld Trails Network is the FriendshipTrail program. Friendship Trails pair trailorganizations in different countries, whowork together in the name of partner-ship, mutual publicity and internationalcooperation. The Bruce Trail Conservancy currentlyhas nine Friendship Trails, one in each ofour Club sections. In each case, a route onthe Bruce Trail (main and side trails) and acorresponding route on the internationaltrail have been designated as a FriendshipTrail, displaying special signs to mark thepartnership. You’ll find maps and moreinformation about each twinned trail onbrucetrail.org and in our Bruce TrailReference Maps and Trail Guide.

The Bruce Trail Conservancy’s family ties stretch across the globe.

We belong to communities of world-class trails, conservation

organizations, and areas of international importance. The World

Trails Network and the UNESCO World Biospheres are two of

these international families.

WORLD TRAILS NETWORKThe Bruce Trail Conservancy is a foundingmember of the World Trails Network(WTN). This global collaboration began in2012 and has grown to encompass trails in40 countries. Member organizations shareknowledge and work on joint projects andcampaigns to protect, preserve and pro-mote environmentally sustainable trails.

As WTN Vice Chair Laura Bellevilleexplains, the WTN is a worldwide part-nership to inspire trail improvements“and to raise the profile of hiking andwalking trails as community enhance-ments, while striving to protect uniqueworldwide natural and cultural assets. This collaboration will effectively tell astory about the benefit of trails at a scale

UNESCO WORLD BIOSPHERESThe Bruce Trail provides continuouspublic access to one of Canada’s mostscenic landforms and a site ofinternational significance: the NiagaraEscarpment. In 1990, the NiagaraEscarpment was designated by UNESCOas a World Biosphere Reserve. It is one ofonly 18 biosphere reserves in Canada, and is part of an international networkof 714 reserves in 129 countries. Biosphere Reserves are sites of uniqueconservation value where thesurrounding community has pledged toprotect biodiversity and culturalheritage, and to uphold the principles ofsustainable development. They containa mix of core protected areas, bufferzones and transition zones. In BiosphereReserves communities work together tofind creative, effective ways for peopleand nature to thrive together. The Bruce Trail Conservancy plays animportant supporting role in the NiagaraEscarpment Biosphere. We create andconnect protected natural areas, stewardland to protect its biodiversity andecosystem services, and connect people tothe biosphere through environmentallyresponsible access along its length. World Biosphere Reserves are as diverseand unique as the world’s ecosystems andpeoples. Meet this growing family byvisiting https://en.unesco.org/biosphere.

Recent Changes with The NiagaraEscarpment BiosphereWhat was previously called The NiagaraEscarpment Biosphere Reserve is nowThe Niagara Escarpment Biosphere. TheCanadian Commission for UNESCO hasput forth a new CommunicationsStrategy in which the term “reserve” isdropped from the name, or changed to“region.” The term “reserve” in Canadahas a negative historical connotation andis not seen as appropriate within thecontext of Truth and Reconciliation.Given that many UNESCO Biospheres in

Canada are located on the traditionalterritories of Indigenous communities, this terminology is problematic. The Niagara Escarpment Biosphere isalso undergoing a governance transitionfrom being run by a regulatory body(Niagara Escarpment Commission) to anon-governmental organization. Whilestill in its early stages, the goal of thisshift is to create opportunities for greatercollaboration and to renew a sense ofshared responsibility. The Bruce Trail Conservancy will con-tinue to work with community partnersin this new stage in the history of theNiagara Escarpment Biosphere. Like oth-ers in biospheres around the world, we’llstrive to live up to this internationalrecognition, and seek solutions that bal-ance the needs of natural systems andgrowing communities. Congratulations to our members who have completed an End-to-End of the entire Bruce Trail –an extraordinary physical and personal journey. The following are members who received theirEnd-to-End recognition in 2020.

2020

The ongoing pandemic has certainly upended many plans for2021 and unfortunately that includes plans for hikerscompleting End-to-Ends. This year it is more important thanever to consider the well-being of others – both those on thetrail, as well as those in communities along the trail.

Club Section End-to-End Hikes are unlikely this year.Due to the changing situation surrounding COVID-19, BruceTrail Clubs are not able to plan and offer spring End-to-Endhikes of their sections. End-to-End hikes normally held in thefall may also need to be cancelled.

Thru-hikes should be postponed. Please put plans for thru-hiking the Bruce Trail on hold until itis safe to travel to other communities along the Trail. It is the travel through local communities that presents the

greatest risk. Also keep in mind that, given the frequentchanges, there is a good chance that restrictions could changewhile you are on your thru-hike.

Hike near your home. Postpone the completion of distant sections. You may have only a few sections left to complete your End-to-End. Please avoid travelling outside your region tocomplete those sections until it is safe to travel to othercommunities along the Trail.
