By annalogy we are not allowed to obtain the raw sum of monetary values declared in terms of different currencies: How can we obtain the sum total of our fortune in our bank account deposited in several currencies? In order to be able to add up 2$+5£+3€ all of the components have to be expressed in terms of identical units i.e. $, £, € or TL. Same analogy applies to the measurement of length in terms of different units e.g. cm, inches, etc. Shortly a set of raw scores obtained for a sample of subjects must be converted to a common unit. Analogy stops here. Unlike currencies or units for length there is no universal unit for educational and psychological constructs. Perhaps "Point" score is the most common unit used in the world. But there no two identical "points" assigned for a subject in an exam or in a questionnaire. The procedure to obtain standard scores for a set of raw scores expressed in "points" of different size is on the Sheet named Standard Scores. Here is the procedure: 1.0 Organize the data matrix as follows: 1.1 Set the column titles Column A: Subjects Column B: Midterm Column C: Homeworks Column D: Final 1.2 Generate alpha numerical subject ids. 1.3 By using mouse or [Shift ↓) multiply the number of subjects.

1.4 Fabricate fictituous scores of different magnitudes.Use =RANDBETWEEN(bottom;top) function in Excel.

Generate virtual scores for Homework and Final with different "bottom" and "top" values in =RANDBETWEEN( … function.

1.5 Right after having completed the data entry inthe first row these

entries must be copied and pasted for alllsubjects.An example for sucha a data matrix is given in the sheetnamed "Standard Scores".

1.6 Convert the raw scores into T-scores by using the formulagiven below (Take care in relative addressing and absolute addressing before copy & paste operations).

The symbols in the formula are defined below.

The formula given above can be written in Excel asd below.

This formula converts the raw score of the subject labeled with S001. From then on this formula will be copied and pasted to all of the subjects for all observations. Before copying and pasting the relative and absolute addressing of columns and rows must be ensuredfor their appropriateness.
