Tendenza, quella dell’attenzione all’ambiente, sempre più pervasiva in entrambi i campi.
The crossover between art and fashion is increasingly evi-dent, two separate and distinct universes that met in the nineties and liked each other so much that today their spe-cific modes of expression and communication are mutually tainted. Fashion vocabulary has mastered the language of art, using with greater ease and frequency terms such as happening, concept, installation ... Spaces designed for fashion and art (visual arts, sculpture, architecture) are increasingly exchanging roles, so that on one hand mu-seums now display clothing and shopping bags as works of art, and on the other hand, boutiques of fashion giants increasingly present exhibitions of artists instead of the usual items.
The products created are also nourished by this conti-nuous exchange. The precursor was the sadly missed Gianfranco Ferrè, an architect working in fashion, with extremely refined tastes, who designed clothing as bu-ildings, giving new proportions to the body (his greatest contribution to the history of Italian fashion was his thorou-gh knowledge of concepts such as shape, texture, space, movement, material, and design).
There are also more current examples of designers rende-ring art, such as Prada, which created the Prada Transfor-mer in Seoul, the mutant multi-functional building designed by architect Rem Koolhaas, elected the 2010 World Design Capital.
Last May, we attended the exhibition Fashion Paper - fa-scinated by paper, organized by the Province of Milan and curated by art historian Bianca Cappello.
It was the perfect opportunity for the intersection of art, fashion, and design. Clothes and jewels made from paper, recycled and non-recycled, were displayed like sculptures in the splendid eighteenth-century Palazzo Isimbardi in Milan. It was an exercise in style, but also a hymn to the use of ethically good materials.
The trend of concern for the environment is more and more pervasive in both fields. Learn more about organic trends with the article written by Francesca Romana Rinaldi, pro-fessor at Bocconi University, on page 6. The report on the Fashion Paper exhibition can be found on page 25.

dovranno fronteggiare?
lavorato rispettando criteri ambientali.

In addition to or alternatively to the use of organic, natural, or renewable raw materials, they use traditional produc-tion methods of particular areas or countries, give rise to social projects such as the involvement of prisoners or ex-convicts to return to work, adopt the recycling of raw materials, or reuse production waste. meritarsi l’appellativo di “ecologico”, un prodotto
2001 a 145.000 tonnellate nel biennio 2007-2008;
le vendite di cotone biologico ammontavano a ~
245 milioni di dollari nel 2001, arrivando a circa
5.000 milioni di dollari nel 2005;
le aziende tessili certificate in accordo al GOTS ~
(Global Organic Textile Standard) sono in costante
e significativo aumento a livello mondiale,
passando da 878 nel 2007 a 1.977 nel 2008;
analizzando la distribuzione geografica delle ~
imprese certificate si riscontra una forte
concentrazione in quattro stati: India, che con
681 imprese rappresenta circa il 34% del totale;
Cina, che ha raggiunto il 6,4%;
al termine del 2008, le aziende tessili italiane ~
certificate dall’ICEA in accordo al GOTS erano 75
salito a 102;
nell’ultimo decennio sono nate numerose fiere ~
e manifestazioni specializzate sia in Italia che
all’estero (tabella 1).
Chi partecipa alle fiere dedicate all’abbigliamento etico
of “green”, a product should always be “ethical”: the
manufacturing of textiles must use organic practices,
techniques, and technologies that allow a reduction
in the use of chemicals, water, and energy, as well as
respect the rights of workers throughout the supply chain.
In the last decade, the eco-sustainable fashion segment
has shown clear signs of development.
Figures from the ICEA (Institute for Ethical and Environmental
Certification) show this trend:
worldwide production of organic cotton has ~
increased from 6,480 tons in 2000-2001 to
145,000 tons in 2007-2008;
sales of organic cotton amounted to $245 million ~
in 2001, increasing to around $5 billion in 2005;
textile companies certified according to GOTS ~
(Global Organic Textile Standard) are constant and
have significantly increased worldwide from 878 in
2007 to 1,977 in 2008;
analysis of the geographic distribution of certified ~
companies has shown a strong concentration
in four countries: India, with 681 companies
representing approximately 34% of the total;
Turkey, with 338 companies reaching 17%;
Pakistan, which represents 7% of the total; and
China reaching 6.4%;
according to GOTS, there were 75 ICEA certified ~
Italian textile companies at the end of 2008 over
a total of 84 certified internationally (Italy 84%,
Pakistan 12%, and the rest of the countries on
a residual), and in 2009 the number increased to
102;
in the last decade, the number of trade fairs and ~
specialized exhibitions have risen both in Italy and
abroad (see Table 1).
Those who participate in trade fairs that are dedicated to
ethical (and eco-sustainable) clothing are mainly young
designers, but among the stands, you can find known
marchi conosciuti e ormai affermati.
Per completare il quadro bisogna includere
nel segmento dell’eco-fashion non solo
i marchi con un’offerta di prodotto
interamente dedicata alla moda
eco-sostenibile ma anche le
realtà che offrono una singola
linea o addirittura solo
alcuni capi eco. Il modelli di
business e i posizionamenti
di questi marchi sono diversi:
andiamo dalle conglomerate
del lusso ai marchi designer,
dallo specialista di categoria
del bridge al mass market
retailer. Di fronte a questa
situazione di estrema eterogeneità
la domanda che bisogna porsi
è la seguente: quali sono i requisiti
minimi per poter parlare di moda eco-
sostenibile?

brands with proven reliability. To complete the picture,
we must include in the eco-sustainable segment not
only brands with a product offering dedicated to
environmentally sustainable fashion, but also
those that offer a single line or only eco

we must ask: what are the

answer today is not regulated,

companies are able to assert
economic sustainability is through
voluntary certification. In 2009 in Italy, about
200 textile and clothing companies decided to turn
to a third party for certification (most were certified by
ICEA, the rest by CCPB). Taking into account all of them,

volontaria.
maggiore rispetto all’abbigliamento.

the number of textile companies is still larger than the
number of clothing companies. The certification follows
the standards of GOTS - Global Organic Textile Standard2,
which introduces environmental and social criteria that
apply to the textile manufacturing system, inevitably
implementing the certification process up until the finished
product. Nevertheless, there is still a “grey area”, and
All textile manufacturing processes (from spinning to finishing) are 2. outside the scope of various national or regional law rules in organic farming. Because of this legal gap, GOTS has been adopted at an international level, resulting from the coordination between organizations of different countries who wanted to build a major international agreement for stan-dardization of the sector.
organic certificationThe certification of an organic textile is based on the asses-sment and verification of the following aspects:
composition ~Each product must conform to the following definitions: “Organic”, made with more than 95% natural certified organic fibers. The remaining 5% can be represented by other natural non-certified fibers and other BIO fibers, or synthetic/artifi-cial fibers;‟Definition “Made with x % of organic fibers” (the x indica-tes a product made of organic fibers in a range from 70% to 95%): it must be made with at least 70% natural certified organic fibers. The remaining 30% can be completely composed of other natural non-certified fibers and other BIO fibers, or synthe-tic/artificial fibers at a maximum of 10%, and a remaining 20% of other conventional natural fibers.
traceability ~The certified organization shall ensure the systematic implementation of operational procedures for the proper management of identification and traceability throughout all stages of production of organic raw materials, semi finished and finished products.
Security of bio textiles ~All organic textiles should not contain or release hazardous substances such as heavy metals or other substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction.
reduction of environmental impact ~The manufacturing of organic textiles must have adopted organic practices, techniques, and/or technologies that enable a reduction in the use of chemicals, water, and energy. In addition, all chemicals must be evaluated according to their toxicological and eco-toxicological properties.
respect for workers’ rights ~Producing organic textiles also means respecting the rights of workers throughout the supply chain.

some companies have merely passed the certification of
raw materials, mainly cotton.
Dedicated showrooms and online sales: the promotion
of ethical fashion brands3
In recent years in Italy, several showrooms dedicated to
promoting ethical fashion brands were created (see Table
2). A common aspect of them all is the fact that they are
not simply showrooms, they offer a very wide range of
services to young designers (including media relations,
promotional activities, newsletters, organization of events
and seminars, marketing activities), thus becoming real

troveranno a fronteggiare almeno tre criticità:
il rischio di ~ Green Washing
il paradosso tra etica ed estetica ~
l’egemonia del nuovo consumatore ~
Ecco i consigli su come affrontarle.

Weakness of eco-sustainable strategies
To achieve a sustainable competitive advantage through
eco-sustainability in the coming years, companies will face
at least three problems:
the risk of Green Washing ~
the paradox between ethics and aesthetics ~
domination of the new consumer ~
Here are some tips on how to address them.
The risk of Green Washing
Green Washing (a phrased coined in the U.S. in 1991 to
indicate a strategy of eco-sustainability almost entirely
based on communication), in the long-term may result
in a harmful loss of consumer confidence. To avert this
risk, companies should offer a differentiated product in
terms of natural or renewable raw materials and ensure a
manufacturing process that respects the criteria of eco-
sustainability.
The paradox between ethics and aesthetics
In analyzing the current offer of midrange (bridge and
diffusion) ethical fashion in Italy, aesthetic appearance still
seems excessively subordinate to ethics.
New trendsEcOfAshION
pag. 11
fascia media (bridge e diffusion) l’aspetto dell’estetica
sembra ancora eccessivamente subordinato rispetto
all’etica.
The logic “this is good for environment” forces companies
into a corner, while the road of innovation, the “responsible
is also beautiful” logic, is the way to go. In the coming
years, companies in this segment will have to focus on
the acceleration of aesthetic content in products and the
innovation of fabrics, deriving from the idea that the goal is
not only to sell a product that is eco-sustainable, but a nice
product that is also responsible.
Domination of the new consumer
The new consumer (often renamed “consumauthor”, see
the article by Francesco Morace in Les Cahiers FM no. 2), is
continually more informed, eager to know the characteristics
of a product and a company, and chooses not only on the
basis of value for money and quality of product, but also
increasingly with respect to the ethical values pursued by
the company. Market surveys agree: 52% prefer products
of companies with a strong green reputation (Tandberg),
New trends EcOfAshION

all’interno della filiera produttiva. Come procedere?
92.4% of Italians want products that “do not involve a

the domination of the new consumer is to inform and

We only do what we do best. Fashion marketing.
The magazine you are reading is published by A To Vee, a multifunctional company that operates in the fashion marketing field. In addition to a publishing branch, we have very active offerings of marketing, strategy, and management services for companies in the fashion system. Our unquestioned strength is our continuous professional updating and the ability to monitor the evolution of society, technology, and the consumer in real-time. If you are reading this, you know what we mean: we would not have been able to create, publish, and continually update a magazine if we did not have real skills. Our professionals do not interpret marketing as a function dedicated simply to the promotional ac-tivities of a brand, but rather they place it within the broader concept of marketing intelligence, which in-volves the entire company structure: from product to consumer. The figure of the marketer, thus understood, becomes the link between the product, sales process, and strategic business choices. Our way of working is also highly innovative: we are able to cover the enti-re marketing function for companies that do not have one, as well as assist more structured companies in the performance of individual projects or individual aspects of work. In addition to marketing, we address commu-nication (institutional, economic-financial, commercial, office printing, drafting of individual company profiles). We are able to provide customers with information regarding strategic business choices, an appropriate brand development and the necessary coherence of an image, as well as communication and content on all levels.

relazioni collaborative, rappresentare l’azienda e
ricordarla.
questi requisiti.

instrument, as well as exciting and an important function
of customer loyalty.
In business relationships, however, the promotional
product is an original and prestigious object, able to sign
collaborative relationships, represent the firm, and make it
memorable.
Over the past 10 years, the approach to this type of item
has changed: at first, cheap gadgets of reduced quality
and limited life span were required, but today companies
are concentrating on co-marketing initiatives and want
high quality products, made by partners that are experts
and specialists in their field, ensuring an excellent final
result.
In terms of selecting a supplier that will carry the chosen
product as an institutional symbol, the criteria taken into
account are undoubtedly the quality of the item, delivery
time, and price.
We have been asked to explain our way of working to the
readers of Les Cahiers, and to make the wealth of our
knowledge available to everyone.
At Trudi, we try to satisfy all these requirements.
In fact, behind the creation of a personalized gadget is
careful research and planning to make the final product
functional in the image of the company and its objectives,
while respecting the needs of the customer in terms of
image, economic value of the item, and delivery needs,
through dedicated analysis by a specialized internal
division.
A direct briefing with the customer is the first step to
understand the purpose of the project and define the
Ex cathedrap. NINO

sviluppa diverse proposte grafiche, ispirandosi a simboli,
colori e indicazioni fornite dal committente.
A seguire, nel laboratorio prototipi interno all’azienda,
below the line, consapevoli dell’importanza di intensificare
characteristics: from quantity to delivery times, from
materials to finishings.
On the basis of the information received, the creative
department develops various graphics proposals, drawing
symbols, colors, and directions given by the customer.
Then, our prototype department, specialized not only in
the manufacturing of stuffed animals, but also in items of
wood and fabric, create the first sample to be submitted
to the customer, on which any further changes are based.
The customer is no longer satisfied with an idea or plan,
but wants to physically touch, to criticize, to suggest ....
The final sample is then approved and used as a reference
for production.
It is no longer enough to call on a trading company in
Hong Kong that deals simply with applying a logo to a
product from the catalog of a low-quality supplier; an
analysis of the customer is crucial.
To be successful in this type of business, it is therefore
important to be structured with a dedicated and versatile
internal division in order to satisfy the demand of
businesses that wish to realize their institutional symbol of
prestige, but that also look for inexpensive gadgets and
mascots, to be distributed on a large scale.
Secondly, it is essential, especially for companies for
which the relationship with the final consumer is a
priority, to have an analysis of above and below the line
investments, being aware of the importance of intensifying
the latter type of activity, that allows a company to
convey its symbols, values, and messages in the long
term through a quality item, made by a competent and
specialized company.

marketing is increasingly mobile
Ricerca 2009 dell’Osservatorio Mobile Marketing & Servi-
ce, promosso dalla School of Management del Politecnico
stesso.
On January 28th, a conference was held in Milan at Po-
litecnico di Milano to present the 2009 research results
of the Research Center for Mobile Marketing & Service,
sponsored by the School of Management of Politecnico di
Milano.
The research aimed to explore the real opportunities offe-
red by mobile marketing & service which, thanks to record
numbers, increasingly refers to the mobile phone as one
of the most effective means of supporting the marketing
activities of companies.
There is no doubt that the mobile phone is the medium
with the highest penetration rate globally. Worldwide, the-
re are approximately 2.7 billion mobile phone users and
1.2 billion mobile phones were sold in the last year alone,
about 22 million of which were in Italy, among the countri-

re, sulle aziende utenti e sulle agenzie creative) in merito
es with the highest penetration rates both of mobile phone
devices and service contracts.
On one hand, the 2009 report of the Research Center for
Mobile Marketing & Service highlighted a significant incre-
ase in the number of companies (and public administra-
tions) that have started to use mobile phones to support
marketing and service activities (also due to the crisis
that has prompted companies to reduce investment in
advertising on traditional media and move towards more
innovative means that guarantee clear and measurable
performance); and on the other hand, a growth of maturity
-in some of the most advanced companies- in the strate-
gic orientation of these tools, such as managing customer
relations throughout the entire cycle of the relationship
(from acquisition to post-sale), or integrating the mobile
channel with other business channels (integrated and
multi-channel approaches).
However, in general, there are still only a few companies
that have a continuous approach to this medium, as it
is natural in the case of new channel use, and almost
always, the various initiatives were created and continue
to be created by the will of a handful of individuals within
a company’s business functions.
Mobile is considered a pure tactical and operational
channel. The main barrier to the adoption of a continuous
approach depends on a company’s poor guidance in
terms of CRM and the lack of awareness that the mobile
channel can be an effective touch point with customers
through every cycle of the relationship.
the instruments of promotion and advertising
We ask: how have companies used the mobile channel for
marketing initiatives (both for promotional activities and
advertising campaigns)? The research, which analyzed
200 case studies and 3 surveys (on consumers, busines-
ses users, and creative agencies) in different areas of pro-
ducts and services, demonstrated that the most dynamic
pag. 21
so la rete bluetooth.
LVMH). Alcune webcam valutavano il comportamento dei
passanti in tempo reale, mostrando chi effettivamente
sectors in the adoption and use of mobile marketing tools
are the automotive, financial-insurance, entertainment-
media-publishing, and fast moving consumer goods indu-
stries (there are also positive signs coming from retail).
The greater understanding of these themes by these
industries has led to the implementation of mobile marke-
ting solutions that are different from the traditional mass-
sending of SMS messages, moving along two directions:
increased profiling of the target, with regard to the SMS
/ MMS channel; and more experimentation with other in-
struments, such as display advertising (which consists of
advertising placed within the content of a user's interest
on telco portals or other mobile sites), branded appli-
cations to download locally, QR code, and download of
branded content through a Bluetooth network.
We are now at the heart of the matter, and will cite the two
cases of most interest to our readers:
La rinascente ~ . During the week of December 4-10,
2009, a proximity marketing test was conducted at La
Rinascente in Piazza del Duomo in Milan, in collaboration
with the top watch retailer Pisa.
The test consisted of sending a personalized message
to all pedestrians that had a mobile phone with an active
Bluetooth function, inviting them to attend a video installa-
tion at the Tag Heuer (LVMH Group) corner of the depart-
ment store.
Webcams rated the behavior of pedestrians in real time,
showing who actually watched the event and measuring
the attention time for each.
It was therefore possible to measure the effectiveness of
marketing communications, both traditional (commercials
conveyed by video and POP materials), and proximity
(Bluetooth messages, audio, digital signage), as well as
the degree of attractiveness of communication and its
ability to draw customers in domestic sales.
The project contacted more than 90,000 people over one

Strategic Vision e Uniteam Init.
a lanciare una piattaforma per gli acquisti via cellulare;
rubate nei backstage, e “Rugby Ralph Lauren Make Your
week. Of these, 27% had an active Bluetooth and 17%
received the message.
About half of the pedestrians eventually focused their
attention to observe the installation. The project was
implemented for Tag Heuer by Dialogica, a consulting
firm specializing in the management of systemic relations
between companies and customers, with the technical
collaboration of Digilab 2000, Axis Strategic Vision, and
Uniteam Init.
Polo ralph Lauren ~ was the first luxury brand to
launch a platform for ordering via mobile phone; in fact, it
launched its mobile site, m.RalphLauren.com, in August
2008. For a fashion house, it is essential to sense and
anticipate trends and phenomena.
David Lauren, vice president of industry advertising, and
son of the founding designer of the house, remarked:
“This new way of shopping is not directed towards a cer-
tain age group in particular, but to those who have interest
in our brand and in technology”.
On the site, it is also possible to read articles from the
RL Magazine and download two iPhone applications:
“Ralph Lauren Collection”, with which it is possible to
scroll through videos of the latest fashion shows, browse
the look book and backstage photos; and “Rugby Ralph
Lauren Make Your Own”, with which it is possible to draw
(and buy) your own sweatshirt, polo, or rugby shirts.
Beginning with Ralph Lauren, numerous brands in the
fashion industry have created a mobile site and launched
iPhone apps.
Simply doing a Google search of the name of a brand
combined with the words iPhone App shows that fashion
houses are all on this channel. The big clothing names
have understood that they can no longer disregard the

operazioni di tipo drive to store e drive to event.
e differenziante.

However, there are still very few companies that are using
the full potential of mobile marketing; most of them limit

oltre a Comieco e Cordenons.
A brief speech by fashion authorities accompanied
the inaugural ribbon cutting of the “Fashion Paper -
Fascinated by paper” exhibition, held from April 29 to May
12 at Palazzo Isimbardi in Milan and curated by Bianca
Cappello, art historian and jewelry critic, in collaboration
with the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, AFOL Moda (school
of the Agency for Job Training in Milan), the Academy of
Fine Arts in Florence, the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts
in Turin, as well as Comieco and Cordenons.
As always, our magazine was hungry for novelties, and
surprises were not lacking.
We expected to see an enjoyable and certainly interesting
exhibition, with fun and well-made paper clothing and
jewelry, but the young designers/students really amazed
and fascinated us.
Accompanied by the sweet notes of a flute, the

docenti.
La mostra come reinvenzione della sensibilizzazione
ecologica, come emblematico esempio di Ars e
Tèchne applicate, come immobile sfilata di haute
couture e, last but not least, la mostra come concorso.
lavoro.

soundtrack of the day, we were transported to a world of
paper, worthy of Lewis Carroll and of a Parisian fashion
show: clothes that were innovative, fresh, chic.
Jewelry that was techno, pop, design.
Garments made in a fine mixture of various printed
materials: from adhesive cards to toilet paper, from
disposable handkerchiefs to clothing tags; all these
materials, which would have been rejected, were given a
second chance, reincarnated in 64 pieces of jewelry, 18
design objects, and more than 30 garments.
The exhibition was a showcase for young talent.
But the exhibition was also an opportunity for interaction
and exchange between Italian and foreign students, and
between students and teachers.

Cellulosica.
egiziana.

The exhibition was a reinvention of environmental
awareness, an emblematic example of applied Ars and
Tèchne, akin to an Haute Couture fashion show, and last
but not least, it was a competition.
However, regardless of the winner, we would like to
mention that the exhibits required up to two months of
meticulous and thorough work in some cases.
“It is the other side of waste”, explained carlo
Montalbetti, General Director of Comieco, Consortium
for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose-based
packaging.
A traditional trinomial, then, between fashion, art, and
design, which materializes here not only in poetic and
sophisticated forms, but also in garments that are ethically

collier di “corallo-cartaigienica”, altamente verosimile;
cartone nero a incastro.
garnero, assessore
Moda Eventi Expo della
Provincia di Milano e
Paolo Del nero, assessore
alle Attività Economiche,
Formazione e Lavoro, si
sono fatte anche latrici
della nuova eccellenza
italiana, di un savoir-
faire nostrano che è Arte,
Progetto e Design, ma
che è anche – e dovrebbe
essere sempre – capacità
manuale, artigianato di
lusso, mestiere come teoria
e pratica assieme.
Ad esempio, nell’uso della
tecnica “quilling”, che
consiste nell’arrotolamento
“good”. It was indeed a recycling of luxury, which focused
on issues of economic sustainability, of the recovery of
paper materials, of environmental compatibility, but it did
so with the unusual charm of everyday materials.
And we believe that the most incisive novelty lied in the
unquestionable attraction of the objects on display, thanks
to their beauty in speaking
a universal language, thus
conveying the important
content with a light
vocabulary, accessible also
to the youth, to those less
attentive, and to the most
strenuous fashion victims.
And this was made possible
by the fact that we are not
talking about sad little suits,
but a complete collection,
in many cases wearable,
which included: a surprising
short jacket made with old
magazines, a red Valentino
evening dress made of
paper napkins, a wedding
dress made of tissues, as
well as a colossal Kimono
made from over 9,000
used stamps, and a cheesy
cocktail dress made by
weaving together thousands
of digital receipts (the kind used for queuing at the
supermarket); and then an “origami” white and aqua green
dress, strong and delicate at the same time; a dreamy
graphic black and white Chanel dress, which we imagine
Audrey Hepburn wearing; finally, tea bags squeezed to
become an ethno-chic jacket resembling Egyptian gauze.
And then there are the design objects and jewelry,

addirittura trasformata in abito, in gioiello, in opera d’arte.
Perché, come sosteneva Lavoisier, «nulla si crea, nulla si
distrugge, ma tutto si trasforma».
like the stunning and highly convincing coral necklace
made of toilet paper; the pompous “gold” ruff; the afro-
chic necklaces and the expandable collar made with
interlocking black cardboard.
All of the exhibits testified not only to the great efforts
made to spread the “green” message, but, as pointed
out by Silvia garnero, alderman of Moda Eventi Expo
in Milan and Paolo Del nero, alderman of Economic
Activity, Training and Labor in Milan, all of the exhibits
also spread the new Italian excellence, our savoir-faire
that is Art, Project, and Design, but that is -and always
should be- also manual skills, luxury artisanship, theory
and practice together. For example, use of the “quilling”
technique, which consists of rolling strips of newspaper
to form shapes and decorations, or the very minute
weaving of stickers to create a cocktail dress, expresses
a “Made in Italy” that is focused on environmental
resources, a masterly mix of technique and creativity.
We are in the wake of Italian’s best.
Even the location and preparation seemed optimal,
for the contrast created between the classical marble
halls of Palazzo Isimbardi and the items placed on
rough cardboard boxes or stacks of fashion magazines
suggests the idea of an easy preparation, transportable
and able to be recycled in other contexts (the exhibition
is in fact a traveling project, and will also visit Florence,
Turin, and Madrid).
Indeed, we have come to think that “Edition One” of
Fashion Paper might have the capacity to rediscover
the same exhibition facilities of this “Edition zero“. Yes,
because even a stack of used newspapers could, some
day, not only be recycled but also transformed into
clothing, jewelry, or works of art. Because, as Lavoiser
argued, “nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, but
everything is transformed.”

Last April, Primark, the British chain of low cost clothing for the whole family, was forced to withdraw a product from the market that aroused anger in thousands of people: a bikini for 7-year-old girls with padded cups. There was a sudden reaction of newspapers and mothers, risen also on the web with a real counter-campaign of denigration of the brand and a request to boycott it, holding it liable for an inappropriate sexualization of young girls. Even the British Association for Child Protection intervened, claiming it was unprincipled advertising. So we wonder what prompted the massive and popular Primark chain to include such a questionable product in its 176 stores. The company immediately apologized for any offense, pointing out that the proceeds of the push-ups sold would be donated to an association for children. Will this be enough for consumers to forgive them?

It shows Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest ballet dancers of the twentieth century, and photographer Annie Leibovitz. LVMH dedicates a lot of energy to environmental issues. In 2007, Bernard Arnault, CEO of the brand, personally signed Gordon Brown’s “Millennium Objectives”, the document that convinced the most important companies in the world to mobilize in defense of the planet. The results were impressive and in many forms, thanks to the creation of an environmental management team for each brand of the group, which led, for example, to a 40% reduction of emissions in production of packaging. A beacon of excellence and genuine commitment, Louis Vuitton unfolds at 360 degrees a social responsibility which is expressed through multiple paths, from the development of human resources to multiculturalism, from medical research to the preservation of artistic heritage.

I Closed spopolano
gestione finanziaria, dichiara fallimento e viene rilevata
produzione in Italia.
brand.

the history
Closed was created in Italy in 1978 by the intuition of
entrepreneur Aldo Ciavatta and the talent of designers
Marithé and François Girbaud. Together, through Ball Spa,
they launched pedal pushers: jeans that had never been
created before, jeans with a perfect fit. Closed attracted a
large following everywhere and become a global success.
A major change occurred in 1992: the company,
unprepared to support expansion with adequate financial
management, declared bankruptcy and was taken
over by Bellini of Günther Giers and Hans-Joachim
Leplow, an important group in Hamburg, which until
then had distributed the brand in Northern Europe. From
distributors to owners, the brand changed its nationality
and became, in effect, German, while maintaining its
production in Italy. For Closed however, this initiated
its darkest years, both in popularity and brand equity,
until Gordon Giers, Günther's son, after graduating in
economics in London, and already former director of the
department of design and production, decided to go into
business with his father and Leplow, and give new life to
the brand.
Two and a half years later, he wanted his two inseparable
classmates at his side (as partners): Hans Redlefsen, who
until then had worked in Bankhaus Lampe in Dusseldorf,
was entrusted the role of chief financial director; and Til
Nadler, who at that time was general manager of Prada
UK and rejected the proposal with regret (only to accept

entrando in azienda come socio e direttore commerciale
e marketing).
viene trasformata in Closed GmbH.
come a Hong Kong.
College of Art and Design, ha vinto numerosi premi e ha
alle spalle esperienze in aziende come Prada, Miu Miu,
it five years later and enter the company as a partner
and director of sales and marketing). In 2004, the three
partners, inseparable old friends, decided to take over
the shares of the company. The old owners welcomed
them, including the father Giers, giving way to the second
generation. The company Bellini, which held the rights of
Closed since 1992, was transformed into Closed GmbH.
The aim of the new management was to transform a
vision into reality: to redevelop Closed as a company
based in Germany but with an international spirit; to
combine tradition and innovation in the brand; to launch
larger collections with respect to the offer of jeans; to offer
a total look at the highest level that can be worn around
the world, from Hamburg to Hong Kong. The work ahead
of them was huge. In the early years, the first cautious
changes in the style office occurred, in which staff
expanded by 30%. The new design team was composed
of competent and capable young people, to whom we
owe the new look of the brand: the majority came from
St. Martin's College of Art and Design, who had won
numerous awards and had experience in companies such
as Prada, Miu Miu, Calvin Klein, and Jil Sander.

Calvin Klein e Jil Sander.
centrale. I lavori di ristrutturazione vengono affidati
all’architetto Carsten Roth che ridisegna i 1.400

The reinvigorated style office not only had the task of
creating new collections, but the most difficult task of
developing a real new world: the Closed world, made of
design, architecture, fashion and music. It was with this
spirit that the Closed City Bike was created, a simple and
minimalist bicycle, launched twice in a limited edition of
100 pieces.
And it was with the same spirit that the new location
of the headquarters was chosen: in 2006 the company
moved to the central Strassenbahnring in the Falkenried
district in Hamburg, which houses the purchasing offices,
showrooms, style office, conference room, administration,
marketing department and, of course, central
management. Renovation works were entrusted to the
architect Carsten Roth, who redesigned the 1,400 square
meters using glass, bricks, concrete, and wood. The
lines were clean, and the environment very bright. Design
studio E15, however, was responsible for furnishings;
the same layout prepared for the headquarters can be
found today in stores and showrooms in Europe (Vienna,
Milan, Dusseldorf, Paris, and Amsterdam). At this point,
one might think that the trio responsible for rewriting the
new language of the brand had finished their work, but
it was in 2006, when the first store in Hong Kong was
inaugurated, that the hard work began: expansion to
conquer the world. In 2007, openings began: first in Lyon,
then Antwerp, Monaco, and the Isle of Sylt in the North
Sea, the Saint Tropez of Germany. A more organized
distribution also began, careful and thorough, within the
leading European multi-brands.

tedesca. Inizia anche una distribuzione più organizzata,
attenta e capillare all’interno dei maggiori multibrand

Ponti, brought to Closed by Til Nadler, his colleague from
the days when they both worked for Prada, gave a new
boost to retail development, bringing to the company a
pure Italian style and developing new projects to revitalize
the brand. From his office in Milan, he presides over sales
in Italy, Southern Europe, the Middle East, the Far East
and the USA. At the head of Closed Gmbh there are now
four partners, four captains who decided to ferry the
company towards an increasingly global presence.

Montpellier.
Dati finanziari
retail all’estero.
progetto quest’ultimo fortemente voluto dai quattro

i prodotti

Paris, Liberty in London, La Rinascente in Italy, Saks and

The most representative stores are located in Hamburg

stores on the island of Sylt, Lyon, and Montpellier.
financial data
Closed finished 2009 with a turnover of approximately
60 million euro, up 12% from 2008. We can expect
further growth in the 2010 results (pre-orders indicate
a 25% leap) resulting from the margins derived from
retail expansion abroad. Furthermore, we expect good
results arising both from the enlargement of the men’s
line, which currently represents 15% of turnover, but has
high potential for growth (it has grown 150% just in the
last two seasons), and from online sales, strongly backed
by the four top managers. The childrenswear data is
expected to be in line with the menswear growth. In 2009,
Giers, Nadler and Redlefsen were awarded “Entrepreneur
of the Year” by Die Familienunternehmer – ASU (the
Association of German Family-Owned Companies) and
Die jungen Unternehmer – BJU (the Association of Young
Entrepreneurs in Hamburg). The judges were impressed
by the entrepreneurial spirit of the three German managers
and their global vision that brought them to conquer the
world’s major fashion capitals.
the products
Today, the Closed label identifies a collection that consists
50% of jeans and the remaining 50% of garments that
complete a lifestyle concept.
In both cases, they are new forms of clothing, free
and progressive. The recent capsule collections are
fundamental to this point of view: the return of pedal
pushers, the Heritage line (dedicated to 30 years of the
brand), and the introduction of cashmere.

pusher. Il leggendario jeans
che ha fatto impazzire il mondo
negli anni Ottanta è tornato alla
ribalta più prepotentemente che
mai, come una star, vera icona
di un nuovo design.
Vita alta, gamba stretta, da
indossare indifferentemente con
i tacchi o con i sandali piatti
nelle più svariate occasioni
d’uso, offre l’illusione ottica
di un ventre piatto. Le tasche
più piccole sui fianchi, invece,
concedono a uomini e donne
una figura più sexy, condizione
imprescindibile e indiscutibile
nel processo di decisione
all’acquisto di un jeans. Una
combinazione perfetta tra
funzione e design.
the pedal pusher. ~ In 2009, Closed celebrated a
major comeback of pedal pushers. The legendary jeans
that crazed the world in the eighties are back in the
limelight now more than ever, as a star, a true icon of a
new design. High waist, narrow leg, wearable either with
heels or flat sandals, with various occasions of use, and
offering the illusion of a flat stomach. The smaller pockets
on the hips provide a sexier
figure for men and women,
an indisputable prerequisite
in the decision process of
buying a pair of jeans. A perfect
combination of function and
design.
the Heritage line. ~ In
2008, exactly thirty years
after its foundation, Closed
celebrated its anniversary
with the reissue of a series of
archival pieces which, despite
the passage of time, have
preserved their revolutionary
nature. The idea of revival
has become a collection, the
Heritage Collection, which
consists of 30 modular pieces
(20 for women and 10 for men),
selected from among those launched from 1978 to 1985
and replicated in a philological edition that is faithful to the
original. A collection that brings the brand's DNA directly
from its origins to today. Everything here speaks of
authenticity, from the rivets to the external label on trouser
zippers, from the cut to the proportions, from the choice
of fabrics to the color palette. Each piece in the Heritage
Collection has a label inside with the date of design and
characteristics of the model. The special packaging adds

1985 e riproposti in un’edizione filologicamente fedele
all’originale.
senza tralasciare i classici cammello, crema e nero.
agli abiti, dai top ai pull-over.
a further element to support the message. Together, all
of the garments are a wonderful tribute to the ’80s, the
unforgettable years of the richest fashion, but also the
years in which avant-garde Martin Margiela worked in
Closed’s design and style office.
Good ideas stand the test of time and they are a wealth to
be rediscovered; not on the thread of nostalgia but as the
reworking of a new project that comes from the heritage
of the fashion house. A new Heritage Collection will be
presented for S/S 2011.
the introduction of cashmere. ~ Pursuing the goal of
expanding the range of jeans and offering a total look at
the highest level, Closed launched Supreme Cashmere,
a collection of products made of pure cashmere from
Mongolia, the finest there is, where this prestigious wool
has been processed and spun for centuries. The quality
of the material allows the production of extremely warm
yet ultra light garments. Closed designed these garments
with its own style, carefully choosing the colors: clear
and bright or strong, from the duck egg blue to red
chili pepper, from yellow to red to turquoise, without
forgetting the classic camel, cream, and black. Fourteen
models, from the cardigan with a round collar to dresses,
from tops to pullovers. Attention to the customer is not
reflected only in style: to complete the collection, Closed
also proposed a shampoo designed specifically to
thoroughly clean cashmere. The line is available in Closed
stores worldwide and the first store dedicated entirely to
cashmere, the “cashmere box”, opened in July on the
island of Sylt, in the archipelago of the North Frisian.

proposte denim, oltre allo stile senza tempo, tanto quanto
understatement. Whether man or woman, the customer
is self-confident and fond of a casual sophisticated
look, appreciating the skill and design research in the
denim proposals, and their timeless style, as well as the
authenticity of the trends and high quality products.
The company not only satisfies customers with its level
of design, drawing on an unstructured and cool style, but
also in terms of product quality, selecting their suppliers
from the finest fabric manufacturers in the world.
Closed has the ability to establish an ongoing dialogue
with its consumers, a dialogue that is cleverly balanced
between functionality and innovation, between simplicity
and refinement of detail, between comfort and occasion
of use.
Special projects and innovative marketing
With the aim of developing a more contemporary and
experimental look, and of situating the brand in a good
market position, Closed launched a series of synergistic
collaborations with designers of the same style.
These collaborations have resulted in special projects of
real co-branding between Closed and prominent brands

I modelli riscuotono apprezzamento e successo in tutti i continenti.
tHe PeDaL PuSHerPedal pushers were created to celebrate the myth of the wandering vagabond, the free spirit, the traveler without means, the globe trotter discovering the world a bit on foot, a bit on bike. The first model was made in Bavaria, in jute linen, from a used mailbag. The style was inspired by the postman’s uniform used at that time. This simple idea brought, in essence, the novelty introduced by pedal pushers, immediately adopted by entire generations tired of being compressed by the rigid fabric of jeans. After the initial trials with used jute linen, Closed introduced pre-treated denim models in the market, giving the
garment a lived-in and aged effect, so comfortable; the pre-treating method is used today by anyone working in the denim market. The most innovative feature of pedal pushers is surely its wash. Closed was the first to use the pumice stone for washing denim, after several attempts with sand or sandpaper. Closed invented the stonewash technique, the revolutionary importance of pedal pushers. In addition to stonewashing, other exclusive innovations were introduced by pedal pushers:
Arms resting in the pockets: the ~X pocket has an inclination of 33°, which allows hands easier access to the front pockets. Arms can be in a more comfortable position than previously experienced.
Hips: the design is created ~with respect to ergonomics. This introduction made the model earn appreciation and success in all continents.
Waistline: designed to keep the ~belt in place.
Length: pushing down on ~the pedal of a bicycle, the hem of pedal pushers rises above the ankle. Furthermore, the slim fit ensures that no edge can become entangled in the chain.
To recognize an original, Closed positioned the label ~externally, on the front flap covering the zipper, a mark of quality visible to anyone.
Although they may seem commonplace today, these elements were disruptive innovations in the ’80s. The most epicurean consumer of the century, the first consumer of industrial brands in the history of clothing, called attention to comfort and style, a request that only Closed was able to interpret, arriving first to break the market. It is estimated that over 30 million pedal pushers have been sold worldwide.

Progetti speciali e marketing innovativo
Italia intrecciandone culture progettuali e produttive e in
particolare facendo incontrare cultura artigianale italiana
in avant-garde fashion.
giuliano fujiwara - closed ~ . The first co-branding
project is the result of an agreement with the Japanese
fashion house that now belongs to Steadfast, Giuliano
Fujiwara, who materialized the label “Giuliano Fujiwara
for Closed” in a capsule collection for S/S 2010, which
debuted at the 76th Pitti Uomo. The collection was
entrusted, in terms of design, to the young Masataka
Matsumura, a Japanese fashion designer under the
brand, with experience and education in Switzerland and
Great Britain. The Fujiwara Design Studio was created in
Milan in the mid ’80s with the aim of uniting Japan and
Italy, interweaving design and production cultures, and in
particular bringing together traditional Italian culture and
Japanese design on the difficult terrain of menswear.
The project consists of an unusual proposal in the range
of offering of Giuliano Fujiwara and lends a touch of
exclusivity to Closed.
garbstore–closed. ~ The project stems from a shared
passion for denim and vintage military clothing, and from
a common philosophy: the continuing search for quality
and excellence in the design of casualwear collections.
All this translates into a capsule collection designed by
Ian Paley, designer of the British cutting edge brand
Garbstore, in collaboration with the Closed design team,
and presented at the 77th Pitti for F/W 2010-2011.
The collection revived the most representative garments
of both brands: tailored and dyed chinos from Closed, and
Japanese cloth parkas lined with plaid felted wool from
Garbstore, to give two examples. Each garment bears a
leather label with the logo of the co-branded project, as
well as the distinctive label of each brand. garbstore-

companies and will also be available for online sale on
their respective e-commerce platforms. The Garbstore
brand finds inspiration from a style conventionally called
“unfamiliar vintage”: jeans and trousers are tailored, and

convenzionalmente chiamato “unfamiliar vintage”: jeans
e pantaloni sono costruiti in modo sartoriale, e felpe e
t-shirt seguono modelli vintage.
concept store con l’insegna Couverture & The Garbstore,
come materiale POP di eccezionale imponenza all’interno
sweatshirts and t-shirts follow vintage models. In the
spring of 2008, the historic store Couverture left Chelsea
and moved to the heart of Notting Hill, where it reopened
as a concept store with the name “Couverture & The
Garbstore”, where you can find international cult brands
of casual clothing and avant-garde clothes. Dubbed
“cult shop” immediately by the Times, the store is a must
destination for quality shopping in London. A company led
by young people cannot be without innovative marketing
operations. The idea of the “Jeans Machine” certainly
moves in this direction. A vending machine that dispenses
two models of jeans in different sizes was presented for
the first time at Pitti Immagine Uomo, and later at Berlin
fashion week.
Two meters high, a meter wide, and lit by neon lights, this
exceptionally impressive machine, positioned within the
stores, is a tempting attraction for consumers in search of
new incentives.

In
Hans is also a typical example of innovative marketing.
Ironically called “the illegitimate son of denim selvedge”,
it is a rubber toy 138 mm high and of course dressed in
Closed garments. Instead of a smile there is an X, the
symbol of the X-Pocket, the hallmark of the group in
Hamburg.
Available in limited edition in all flagship stores and online,
it is a very effective marketing tool, and sells well among
collectors of Designer Toys.
As we know, the crossover between design and fashion
is very obvious in Closed, and the success of urban toys
could not be overlooked. Fashion and art merge more and
more their mode of expression and communication, and
the four managers at the top of the German brand know
this well. New projects are still in the pipeline, especially
those related to social media and the Internet, which pose
new challenges in the interaction with consumers.
The common needs of an international group are in fact
very demanding, and to address them in an original and
unique manner is an imperative for Closed.
The new project, involving creatives from around the
world, will be revealed at Pitti in June 2010.
