EDrroR--Alas. another letter in protest of the Palos Fire, east of White Oaks, N .M. .

This fire started by lightening strike on less than a quar-ter acre area which could have been put out immediately butit was evidently decided by someone in B regional office tomonitor the fire only. This area has experienced extremelydry conditions and is a place where controlled burning to eliminate a heavy full load has not been done. Common sense"'screams"at most ofus. telling us that you DO NOT take anychances monitoring! You DO take a minimal staff and put itout. Instead, this fire got out ofcontrol. requiring at least 600men, any number ofaircraft.. a detailed rare camp with sanitation truck etc. I would not hesitate to say millions oftaxpayers dollars spent. This is not to mention the homesteads, andresidents that had to be evacuated because the firethreatened to destroy their lifelong homes and livestock.

It is an increasingly known fact that the forestry resources in this region and Lincoln CoUnty have been cutrepeatedly in the last few years. The Capitan office has been held to aminimum and helicopter funding is no longer; I don't professto have extensive knowledge about this but I would like to saythat &om a "civilians" point of view. I am saddened aboutwhat i.lost. I have scaled Patos Mountain since I was a child, riding horseback" hiking, mountain biking. even carrying mythree month oldchild up to the top to view ourbeautiful home.I have taken a thermos ofcoffee up to the ·peak l"OCk' at 5:30a.m. to watch the sunrise. Now all oftbis is gone andwon'tever be the same in our lifetime. I am given to understandthat the regeneration in this region could~e 175 to 300yearsU·Fire is good for the ecosystem but be realistic. When structures are threatened over 5 thousand acres are senselesslycharred and loads ofour tax dollars are unnecessarily usedwhen all may have been prevented, someone'. decision to'""watch'" the fire is seriously in question.

Ruidoso DEWARE! A big fire is due in your area as well.•fone starts. is some official going to choose onlytomoRi~rit?Lets raise our voices in request for asking thObe oft\cials formore funding in the area departments before all our verybeautiful and marketable forests are lost.

Did The School Fail?By Ruth Hammond

. The schools in Lincoln COUDty are among the best in theSUde as can be proven by the n~beI' of awards that are ondisplay in each of the schools. A~nuaE reports. called schoolrcpoI't cards, UBI the positive things in the schools, and scbooladminlsuators at each of the sc600ls take ~y opportunitytheY get to tell bow greal &:heir school is. .

Awards are only one example of how well a school is doing. Results of ~Iudent testing1 ratio of gradutUes versus dropouts.number of scholarships presented each. year, doll~ amounts ofscholarships presenled' each year. and tncuases in enrollmenlare also indications of the success or ·failure of a school.

Wben SChool enrollment decr-eases it also decreasestbe schoolbudget which results in less money available for the remainingstuclCnts. When the school budget is decreased considenlbly theentire district suffers. The loss of even one student can affect an'entire school system. .

The board of education usually, wOrks to improve their schooland makes every attempt to increase enrollmenl~ At one time a.school board considered hiring only new staff members withchildren. When it was noted that this w,s discriITfination theboard reversed theJr decision.

Many school board members have children In school and theitreason for choosing to be candidate$ fQr election to the. schoolboard are to help improve the schools' their children ;auend. Some school board members have grown children ankhOse tobe candidates for election to the school board to heIp Ilhprovethe school for all children.; '..'.

It would be unthinkable for a school board member's child tobe removed from the school where- the parenl is a school boardmember and be enrolled in· a rival school.

If a school board member's child were to go to another schoolit would give the impression the school board member has nb 'faith in the school ·to provide adequate education for any of $j? .students attending that school. -

If a school board member's child were to be removed from lheschool where Ihe parenl was a school board member it wouldindk;1IIC the lack oT dedication by the school board member.

If a school board member's child were to go to another'schoolit would be a major announcement lO the community as well as10 the school thai the leadership by the school board needed tobe reviewed.

The parents of the children attending a school expect·certainstandards from the leaders at the school. The parents of thechildren attending a school expect total commitment from theirelectorate on that school board. The parents of the childrenattending a school want what is best for their children and thatincludes knowing that the school board members agree.

School board members are no longer just plain people whenthey take the oath of office. They become, or sbould become. theleaders of their educational facility.

A leador should lead by example. It is impossible for a schoolboard's child to be an example of the superiority of a school. ifthe school board member's child .attends another school.

It is casf to understand why a barber does nol cut his ownhair and it IS easy to understand why a doctor does not performsurgery on himself but it is difficult to understand how a schoolboard member can continue in that capacity.for even a few days01" a few months if the code of ethics has been breached.

Our schools in Lincoln County can continue 10 be the bestonly if the leaders of those schools are the beSl._To be the bestlDeans you believe in Ihe schools to fulfill their promises. Maybeschool board members should reconsider their pro__m;,;,;,;·se.;,s;,;. •
