conditions and at temperatures and humidity conditions recommended by the manufacturer.

1.6 SAMPLE FLOOR AREA (MOCK UP)

A. The Engineer/Employer will select one area to receivecement floor tile and designated as the sample roof area. This area shall be finished and approved before authorization to proceed with work in other areas.

B. The sample floor area shall, upon approval, be incorporated into final construction upon

Employer’s approval and shall form the standard of acceptance for cement floor tiles on the remainder of the related project areas.

1.7 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Provide sufficient heat and ventilation in areas where this section is being performed, so as to allow tiles to properly set. Take all precautionary measures necessary to ensure that excessive temperature changes do not occur.

B. Do not install cement tiles when temperature is below (07 degrees) or above (40 degrees C).

C. Maintain the temperature range 24 hours before, during and 72 hours after installation of tiles.

B. Size: Tiles shall be 400 X 400 X 40 mm thick.Tiles shall be sound, square edged, and even.

C. Tiles shall be sound, square edged, and even and uniform texture and color. Texture and color

shall be as approved by Engineer.

D. Water shall be fresh, clean and potable, free from organic matter, acids and alkyls.

E. Cement tiles shall meet the prescribedlaboratory tests. 2.3 MORTAR MIXES

A. Setting bed mortar mixes shall be one part Portland cement to 4 parts sand by volume.Add water to produce low slump mix.

2.4 GROUT

A. Grout shall be mixed with water only in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure selected grout is appropriate to grout joints width specified and installation location.

B. The color shall be as selected by Engineer and shall be strictly controlled so that all joints will be

uniform throughout, to the satisfaction of the Engineer. 2.5 SEALER

A. Seal tiles to protect surface finish and color. No need to use sealer if standard concrete tiles are

used.

B. Sealer for external use shall be penetrating type. For interior applications, use penetrating or topical types.

3.1 MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS

A. Compliance: Comply with manufacturer’s product data, including product technical bulletins and installation instructions.

3.2 EXAMINATION

A. Site verification of conditions: Verify that substrate conditions are acceptable to product installation in accordance to manufacturer’s instructions.

1. Concrete slabs shall have roughened or trowelled surfaces to allow for bonding.

2. Ensure that all substrates are clean and free from contaminants.

B. Concrete to receive tiles shall be cured 28 days minimum, before receiving tiles.

C. Notify the Engineer /Employer in writing of any condition requiring correction before any tile work is installed. Failure to make such a report shall be construed as acceptance of the conditions.

3.3 PREPARATION

A. Grounds, door bucks, electrical boxes, connections for plumbing and heating fixtures, and all fittings shall be in place and pipe chases and other openings shall be properly closed before any tile is installed.

B. Inspect all surfaces to receive tiles; be assured that they are in proper condition for the work to be performed under this Section.

C. Coordinate the work of this Section and that of Section 071400 to insure that the required joints are calked before grouting is performed.

3.4 CONTROL JOINTS A. Install control joints (tile expansion joints) in the work at locations noted at places where

construction joints occur in concrete sub-floor.

3.5 INSTALLATION

A. Set all tile in neat cement paste applied to a plastic setting bed. Thoroughly beat-in all tiles while the mortar bed is still plastic. The beating shall fill the entire space between ribs of the rib-backed tile with mortar. Provide control joints free of mortar where detailed and required.

B. Tile shall be laid out in grid pattern as shown on drawings and Shop Drawings.

C. Floor tiles shall be set with joints of a width as shown on the drawings to receive the grout.

D. Extend tile work behind equipment and fixtures, to form a complete covering without interruptions, except as otherwise specified or shown.

E. Terminate work neatly at constructions, edges and corners without disrupting pattern or joint

alignments.

F. Accurately form intersections and returns. Perform cutting and drilling of tiles without marring visible surfaces.

G. Carefully grind out edges of the abutting trim, finish or build-in items for straight aligned joints.

Fit tile closely to electrical outlets, piping, and fixtures and other penetrations so that plates, collars or covers overlap tiles.

H. Provide openings for control joints where and as indicated and specified above.

I. Grout tile joints using the approved prepared grout. Force a maximum amount of grout into

joints. Follow the grout manufacturer’s directions explicitly. Tool Joints flush for floor tile and bottom of cushion edge for wall tile, all as accepted by the Engineer/Employer. Mortar shall not show through grouted joints. The finished grout shall be uniform in colour, smooth and without voids, pinholes or low spots.

J. Prior to installing floor tiles, ensure surfaces are level, with maximum surface variation of 3mm in

3 meters non- cumulative. Ensure surfaces slope to drain when and where required.

K. Do not commence until surface conditions are within tolerances required for proper installation.

L. Neatly cut tile around fixtures and drains. Accurately form corners, base, intersectionsand returns.

M. Ensure tile joints are uniform in width, subject to normal variance in tolerance allowed in tile size. Ensure joints are watertight without voids, cracks, excess mortar or grout.

N. Sound tile after setting. Remove and replace hollow sounding units.

O. Allow tile to set for a minimum of 48 hours prior to grouting.

P. Completed installation to be free of broken, damaged or faulty tiles.

3.6 CURING A. Use the curing method suitable for such application. B. Close area to allow undisturbed curing.

3.7 TOLERENCES A. Maximum Variation from Flat surface: 2mm in one meter.

C. Maximum Variation from Level (Except surfaces sloping to drains) 2 mm. 3.8 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Upon completion of placement and grouting, clean all tiles’ surfaces so they are free of foreign

matters. B. Seal and polish surfaces in accordance with NTMA. C. Tiles may be cleaned with acid Solutions only when permitted by the grout manufacturer’s

printed instructions; but not sooner than 14 days after installation. Protect metal surfaces , cast iron and vitreous plumbing fixtures from effects of acid cleaning.

D. Leave finished installation clean and free of cracks, chipped , broken, unbounded, or otherwise

defective tile work. E. Prohibit foot and wheel traffic from using tiled surfaces for at least 3days after grouting is

completed. The works shall be Damp cured for a minimum of 72 hours before use by others. F. Before final inspection, remove protective covering and rinse with neutral cleaner from tile

surfaces. 3.9 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installation Specification shall conform to manufacturer recommendations.
