Sail/Race Seminar Open to Everyone Volunteers Needed for '04 Season by Trudy Durand
I c
ink summer—as in warm sun, sparkling water, laughter and people having a good time while making a difference. You could be part of all that, and challenge yourself a bit. Join the group that helps run S S Y C ' s outstanding Sail
Race program. But you say, you are a power boater, or a non-boater, don't know a thing about sailing and it looks so... intense, so...complicated.
Think again. You love summer, water and a good friendly group that enjoys what they do. You are willing to learn, and you have pride in what you do. Read on for a great opportunity.
An informal seminar is being offered on Saturday, April 3 in the upstairs dining room to let you know what it's all about. Volunteering is very fashionable at S S Y C . It's fun while making a difference helping a very well run program.
Carol and Erv Schloemer, power boaters, have volunteered on the Sail Race committee boat for about a dozen years. "It's a lot of fun. Our son races with a crew and we wanted to watch. It really is a well organized program. We also have started the Queen's Cup race for the last six years or so," Carol said with enthusiasm in her voice. Unfortunately an injury will keep her off the Lily E . this year, and Erv will be traveling a lot. Fresh talent is needed.
This volunteer opportunity is perfect for a new member, with or without sailing experience. Or maybe you are a spouse or friend of a sail racer and you like being where there's action. You will learn the mechanics of setting a course, starting and running a race. On the Lily E . you will have a slot to fill, maybe working the flags, spotting starts and finishes, or completing the paperwork and bringing the results to the scorers.
There is always a Club Race Officer on board who's in charge and ready to help. He makes the calls. It's a well-run program and you would be part of a long tradition of that quality. Barb Drake has been a part of this since the '70s. She learned from an old pro, Carl Mueller. "There is great pride in our sail race program. I like being where all the action is. It's exciting," she said.
"We need some new volunteers," Sai l Race Committee Chairman Larry Mueller said. "We are known for our excellent race management." The day of the week that volunteers are needed varies. Wednesday evenings is S S / S S S (double S , triple S ) social racing. Fleet racing takes place on Saturday mornings. Women race on Monday evenings which is combined with Milwaukee Yacht Club. Special regattas and other laces are also scheduled throughout the season.
Volunteers realize their role is a serious one. Maturity is a necessity. There are rules that run the races, and volunteers learn them easily. There are no quizzes. You will learn how to set up a race course, whatever its shape. The R R S (Race Rules of Sailing) will also be introduced at the seminar. You will leave the seminar with a new understanding of racing and the rules that govern the sport.
If you enjoy this work, there are some opportunities to continue training, and even work with other clubs. U S Sailing has a program for certifying Race Officers. This includes c lasses and tests. Some experience is also needed to become certified. S S Y C member John Archibald has completed the US Sailing Race Management course and is a certified Race Officer. There are several levels of certification-Club, Regional and National. Milwaukee Yacht Club will offer a c lass for certification later in April. John commented that this program improves in quality as Race Officers become better trained. "We are fortunate to have a number of certified Officers at S S Y C over the years. Because of them there is less risk of errors and it's a smoother operation," he said.
Sound intriguing? Check it out. The Sail Race Committee is preparing materials for the attendees on April 3, so reservations are a must. The seminar begins at 8:30 AM and runs through till noon with a light lunch being served. Call the Club Office to let the committee know you are interested and would like to come. You will have a b a l l . ^ ^

I have trouble in "Thinking Spring" after shoveling the white stuff off my driveway this week, but it's time to get
started on preparing the boat for launch. May 1st for the members in the aisle will come soon enough. P lease work safely while trying to get to those hard-to-reach places. The Grounds Committee will be sending out the informational memo on safety and other points while getting your boat ready. If you store elsewhere, please feel free to get a copy from the office.
February and March has been an exciting time, having meetings with the Director of the Milwaukee County Parks System, Sue Black, Hornblower Marine, (the Lake Express Ferry), Rick Tobiaski and The Corps of Engineers from Kewaunee, WI .
• T h e main topics discussed concerned the jremodel/rebuilding of the Clubhouse, the
shoal at the breakwall, wave abatement from the South and weed control in the entire South basin. All meetings went well and the people representing the various organizations appear to be willing to help S S Y C attain its goals of improvement and safety on the water and in providing a pleasing atmosphere for members and guests.
I would like to share the points given to members who attended the General Membership meeting on March 18th by the chair of the Facilities Planning Committee. They are:
•In an effort to control the rumor mill at the bar, "All together now, there will be NO $600.00 dues increase or a s s e s s ment for a Clubhouse project". •You, the members are in control of, and must approve ANY future plan to remodel or rebuild .
•We are in no rush to put a shovel in the ground next month. Our lease with the County stipulates the time table for Club building code and ADA compliance is in 2011. •The Committee is exploring alternative financing options to the Club that could be used to minimize member cost.
•The Committee is working to develop a master plan for the best and most effective way of addressing Club issues. •To achieve these goals for the members, the Committee needs professional consultant's input and therefore, requests approval of $15,000.00 for funding as outlined in item " B " of the March 5th "Call To The Meeting" mailed to all members.
At the March 18th meeting, the members approved the request for the funding of the project.
I would like to welcome all of the new members who have joined the Club in the past few months. I encourage them to get involved in Club activities and use their talents to further improve the Club. Work parties are a good way to meet each other and find f * | out how the Club has enjoyed the W benefits of i * ^ volunteerism. If you, the older member, see a new face, introduce yourself to the new member and welcome them aboard. We're all family.
All of the Committees have finished their calendars for the year. Watch the Compass for notice of these activities and plan to attend as many events as you can to show your support for your Club.
The winter storage area on the grounds is quiet except for the sounds that Terry C a s e ' s work party for the "D" dock rebuilding project is making. Soon, Terry will be getting competition from members who will be starting to prepare their boats for launch. It's not too late to enjoy "Taco Tuesdays" and the "Shake of the Day".
It's time to start working on my boat, so bye for now. I hope to see you all at the Club.

Sail/Race News Do You Know? - Boating Safety Tip^ by Larry Mueller
It is a great feeling to fiave all of this season's sail race schedules finalized for 2004. Be sure to check the S S Y C
web site for the final schedule or pick one up the next time you are at the Club.
It will now get quite busy for all of us on the Race Committee. Launching activities are just around the corner and the racing season will be here soon. I have scheduled a work party on Saturday, March 27th at 9 AM to work on the Lily E . There is much work to be done on the R C boat to prepare for this summer including pulling the prop and shaft. Volunteers are most welcome.
Registrations for the S S Y C Volunteer Race Seminar are coming in at a good pace. You must register if you plan to attend. Registration forms are available at the Club Office. If you have ever thought about volunteering for the Race Committee, this is a great opportunity to learn about race management with a special local emphasis. Our own Race Committee and Officers will be discussing all aspects of our highly successful Race Management Program in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Any questions, contact a Race Committee Representative or Larry Mueller.

There may be times that swimming in Lake Michigan is enjoyable if it is a planned activity. However, if you are suddenly plunged into water cooler than your body temperature, that could be a life-threatening activity, either from drowning or
hypothermia.
Hypothermia is a sub-normal body temperature and can occur anytime a person is immersed in water cooler than 98°. Cold water conducts heat away from the body 25-30 times faster than cold air. If you are suddenly immersed in cold water your skin and outer tissue cool quickly. Within 10 to 15 minutes your body's core temperature (heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord) begins to drop; this can cause disorientation, loss of mental acuity or unconsciousness which could lead to drowning before your body temperature drops low enough to cause death.
Survival time in cold water depends on many factors; the water temperature, the amount of body fat on the person and the activity in the water are some of the factors. By swimming or treading water, your body will cool 35% faster than if you remain still in the water. The Coast Guard has a rule of thumb about hypothermia they call "50/ 50/50/", meaning that a person in 50° water for 50 minutes has a 50% chance of survival.
The best way to avoid hypothermia if you are accidentally immersed, of course, is to get out of the water as soon as possible. It could be that you are immersed due to accidental swamping or capsizing of your vesse l . Even then, many boats will still float and if yours does, get into or onto it. This will not only get you out of the water, but it will make you easier to be seen by rescuers. But if you can't get out of the water there are some steps you can take to extend your survival time and increase your chance of being rescued. Try to minimize your body heat loss by wrapping your clothing as tightly around your body as possible, using any buttons, zippers, snaps or other fasteners on your clothes. Do not remove any clothing as that would only cause more body heat loss. Cover your head if possible, as this is an area of large body heat loss , ! possibly as much as 50%. Use some form of floatation, if available, so that you don't • expend all your energy and body heat just to stay afloat. If there are other people in the water with you, huddling together will extend survival time as much as 50% longer than swimming or treading water. If you are alone, assume a fetal position by holding your knees to your chest and wrap your arms around your legs to help reduce the loss of body heat.
While you are safely cruising in your boat, if you should come across a person in the water in need of help, there are steps to take to treat that person for hypothermia. First, remove the person to a warm shelter, check for breathing and heartbeat and if necessary, start OPR. Then remove the wet clothing, cutting away if necessary, and lay the victim in a level face-up position on a blanket or other warm insulated surface. Then cover him/her with warm blankets or clothing and seek professional medical help as soon as possible.
One question has been asked concerning whether or not a person should try to swim to shore. It is a very difficult decision that depends on many factors. However, the best suggestion from most experts on cold water survival is that you should not try to swim to shore unless there is absolutely no chance of rescue and you are absolutely sure you can make it. If you do swim for shore, wearing a P F D is an absolute must.

Manager's News Auxiliary Update D-Dock Re-building Update by James Hutchison
Spring weatlier is usually elusive especially near the lake here in S E Wisconsin. But perhaps the warm
up will soon take hold and stick around, giving us the mild Spring days needed to get our maintenance projects going. The Club resumes Monday hours of operation on April 26th. Our launch season will officially begin on May 1st and it will soon be time to think of all the great boating activities that are just ahead.
There are numerous events coming up that are sure to be enjoyable for all members. The Easter holiday will see the Juniors hosting the Children's Easter Egg Hunt on April 10th and Chef Peter is planning a spectacular Easter Brunch on April 11th. The Crew Search Party, hosted by the P H R F Fleet, is scheduled for Saturday April 24th in the lower lounge and the Power boater's Committee will host the Wine Tasting Party on the upper level that same evening.
May 1st will be the first day of our launch season and will also be the day that we host the Kentucky Derby/Welcome Aboard new members party. Jerry Hedtke and his committee are working hard to make this an enjoyable day for everyone.
Volunteers are needed to help with the Slip and Waterfront Work Party on Saturday, April 17th at 8 AM. Please join us and help get the season off to a great start!

called the meeting to order. Corresponding Secretary Sally Mergener shared the thank you cards from Cookie Mueller for the plant received and the Milwaukee Zoological Society for our support and donation. Marilyn Bruesewitz informed us that Lyn Hansen, daughter of Gloria Sprotte, had died in January. Marilyn personally extended condolences on behalf of the Auxiliary.
Cookie Mueller thanked everyone for attending the Wednesday Evening Programs and the Junior's Spaghetti Dinner. Your attendance makes them a success . The Juniors will sponsor the Easter Egg Hunt on April 10. Please call to R S V P . Vice-President Peggy Eilers voiced concern over some of the By-Laws for the Sunshine Fund. Lastly, Leanne Dukes suggested the upcoming Auxiliary directory should also include e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers.
Ralph Winkler, Chairman of the Facilities Planning Committee, thanked the Auxiliary for our continuing support. He gave a presentation detailing the potential renovating of the Clubhouse. The considerations are numerous and necessary for our future. The Milwaukee Port Authority Director, Kenneth Szal l i , and Director of Marine Operations of the Hornblower Marine Serv ices, Rick Tobiasky, gave a presentation on the high speed ferry. On March 8th the Lunda ironworkers returned to the work of setting steel for the D-dock framework,
only to find the outboard motor missing from their work boat, most of the steel fabrications gone, much of their equipment with dead batteries and the crane spuds firmly stuck in the mud bottom of the lake. So despite this difficult start they have already completed the main walkway steel work and are rapidly finishing the east side finger piers.
Slip committee work parties have completed all of the handrail posts and cutting the finger pier decking. We are looking for volunteers to help assemble the many finger pier pallets that will be needed to complete the deck. If anyone can help it will be appreciated, please contact me at home 4 1 4 - 4 8 3 - 1 9 4 3 . ^

The Power Boater's Breakfast held on February 22nd was a huge success with approximately 100 guests plus Bob and Jane Knollenberg and their committee of omelette flippers, kitchen cooks, bar tenders and table workers. A lot of credit
also goes to the Club staff and workers who assisted with the success of this event.
The Power Boater's annual Gambler's Getaway is a sell out again this year. Mike Dziubek, Joy Dziubek, and Erv and Gene Blumner have done a great job in planning this event. There will be a follow up report in the next issue. Hope there will be some big winners.
The next Power Boater's event will be the Wine Tasting Party to be hosted April 24th by Barry and Pat Goodstein and Sharon Hanbury. Due to the popularity of this event, the reservation policy will be as follows.
•Reservat ions will not be accepted until April 6th and club members are limited to two guests (one guest couple per member couple or two guests of one single member). The Club member is responsible for total payment at the event, or house charge to their account.
•Cancellations will not be accepted after April 16th.
A s in the past, the committee along with Bar manager Jim Shilling will have some special wines to sample, and Chef Peter and his crew will have an outstanding assortment of hors d'oeuvres, desserts and "you name it" to provide all with a pleasant evening.
It's not too early to start planning for the Thursday night events. On May 27th Craig and Joan Lake, Tom and Donna Budnik and Wayne and Lynne Happel will host the Chili Dump and Flare Shoot. So , gather your old and expired flares and learn how to use them. Also it is a good time to be sure that the First Mate and others that travel with you are also familiar. We plan (weather permitting) on also having a firefighting demonstration and practice, so bring your fire extinguishers.
With launch date not too far off it's time to get those projects done so all will be ready when the day comes. I hope everyone is looking fonward to a safe and enjoyable 2004 boating season,
More than 100 members and their guests enjoyed the Power Boater's Breakfast on February 22nd. Here, the omelette making trio had a brief break in the action but were kept busy the entire time. From left; Ed Fennig, Craig Heser and Russ Berg.

By-Laws changes and authorization to fund the Facilities Planning Committee won approval by Club members at the March 18 General Membership Meeting. By-Laws changes included language to clarify who may attend regular and
special meetings of the membership, and language exempting member authorization for reoccurring expenditures that need to be paid in a timely manner, e.g. tax and lease payments. Also approved was a higher dollar maximum for emergency expenditures not requiring prior membership approval.
Facilities Planning Committee Chairman Ralph Winkler made the motion for $15,000 to fund his committee as they work to present options and cost figures to the membership regarding remodeling or rebuilding of the Club. The committee will need to contract with professionals to prepare specifications which it will present to the membership. Winkler said he wished to clarify any misconceptions. "There will be no dues increase or assessment for this project. Members are in control and must approve any plans. We are not in a hurry to put a shovel in the ground," he said. He noted that the lease with Milwaukee County did require the Clubhouse be brought up to code and must comply with ADA requirements in 2011. "We are looking at financial alternatives, and working on a master plan," he said.
Commodore Dave Tucholka reported that he and several Board members met with officials of Hornblower Marine who will run the new high-speed ferry to Muskegeon, Ml beginning June 1. The ferry is 192 feet long, 57 feet wide, and will carry 250 passengers and 49 cars. It will travel at 34 knots (approximately 40 miles per hour, and can stop in 400 feet. "We welcomed them to the neighborhood, and I think it will be a wonderful addition to our community," Tucholka said. The ferry's radar can pick up any boat, and we will keep them informed of our race schedule, he said. The vessel will dock near the Coast Guard Station. Passage will be $85 round trip, with group rates available.
During Committee reports Membership Chairman Mike Dukes reported that 16 Active j and 1 Associate member joined the Club at the March board meeting. There are 10 ! more openings, and we are working to fill those openings. Dukes said. Slip Committee Chairman Terry C a s e reported that work has begun again on D dock. The main walkway is finished and the finger piers are under construction. Member work parties will continue. An electrical pedestal for the horseshoe is on display at the Club. Waterfront Serv ices Chairman Ed Foster reported that the new lease lets the Club sell fuel to members at a preferred rate. He said that two thirds of our fuel sales are to members. A reduced rate will be tried, he said. Entertainment Chairman Jerry Hedtke invited all to attend the Welcome Aboard and Kentucky Derby party on May 1. Feel free to bring friends, he said.

The days are getting longer, the Holidays behind us and people are heading south for winter sailing. Sure signs that our season is coming soon. No boats from our local fleet headed to Key West or the Midwinter Championship this year but
the fleet in general was well represented with participants traveling from Chicago, Ml and OH for some hard racing and tight battles. Scott Bruesewitz teamed up with Liquor Box to take the T-10 section in a close battle that came down to the last day. Scott commented that it was an interesting experience sailing on another boat after taking Contumacious down the last few years. The opportunity to learn how others manage their boats and compare deck layouts, crew positioning and boat handling techniques was almost as valuable as a few days of FL sunshine in the dead of winter I'm sure Scott would be more than willing to share his observations for the price of a drink next time you catch him at the Club.
The T-10 Midwinter Championship was a new event this year and sailed in conjunction with the St. Petersburg NOOD Regatta. The event looks to be a success and there are a few Milwaukee Fleet boats already gearing up for a trip south next winter. Mike Dziubek told me that when shopping for new a vehicle it's always important to keep long distance towing in mind. Hmmm...
We held our T-10 Spring meeting on March 11 at S S Y C to finalize plans for the 2004 season. A number of our fleet intend to take advantage of the opportunity to sail in a 45+ boat section at the Chicago NOOD'S so we decided to replace the date conflicting Wind Point race with a new event hosted by MYC, the Great Gate Race. The Rum Cup, definitely one of the season highlights, will be expanded this year to include the 210 fleet. The thought of additional donations of rum towards the party overruled any concern of taxing the Race Committee but we will be looking for lots of help from anyone interested in watching tight match racing done by some very competitive skippers and crews. The Grand Prix will continue to be a non-season counter but there will be a T-10 section offered if our traditional number of entries holds. In the hopes of grabbing the Queen's Cup we elected to sail as part of the P H R F fleet with the appropriate rating for the sail selection chosen by individual boats (although I suspect more than a few friendly wagers will be placed within the fleet!).
A s we start gearing up for the coming season we'll be keeping an eye on 2005 when we'll be hosting the T-10 North American Championships. It's never too early to start planning and we will be soliciting support from all fleets to continue the reputation of Milwaukee Bay events being first c lass.
Looking forward to some of those warm breezes in our own backyard soon...
