Collectors are eating up vintage menusBy William Flood

If you’re like most of us, it’s been quite a while since you’ve dined in a restaurant and ordered a meal from a menu held in your hands rather than from an app on your phone. Yet, did you know that what was once so common — the restaurant menu — is a popular collectible?

Menu collecting is a niche within the larger ephemera collecting hobby and popular for many reasons. Menus have a nostalgic appeal, particularly for long-gone eateries that collectors recog-nize or have visited. Menus also pro-vide a fascinating economics lesson reflected in the age-old prices printed on their pages. Culinary trends and once-popular cuisine are also spotlight-ed as is the evolution of commercial printing and design. And, even though the most historic menus can cost thou-sands of dollars, menu collecting remains a relatively inexpensive hobby.

There is archeological evidence that something akin to menus once existed in China’s Song Dynasty — but menus as we know them date back to 18th-cen-tury Europe. At that time, dining out-side of the home was rare. While tav-erns and inns served travelers, menus were not necessary, as guests ate what the house provided at communal tables and at a specified time. Opening an antique shop during a pandemic: ‘A leap of faith’By Eric C. Rodenberg

BRAZIL, Ind. – Some folks may think picking up and moving more than 1,400 miles, during the first month of Covid-19, to set up an antique business in a town where no one knows you may be a little “off the hinge.”

But, that’s exactly what a young Mon-tana family did, arriving in Brazil, Ind., on March 31, 2020. It was a “leap of faith,” said 40-year-old Michelle Chur-chill. She and her husband, Mike, and 18-year-old daughter Katlyn, first saw the property online around January of 2020.

The Churchills are natives of Billings, Mont., where Michelle’s grandparents and parents operate Wright Custom Re-pair, a 46-year-old furniture restoration business. Michelle grew up in the busi-ness. Mike has worked for his in-laws for more than 20 years in all aspects of stripping, repairing and refurbishing antique furniture.

As antique pickings are sparse in Montana, the Churchills often traveled east to buy pieces to restore and sell. Wanting to be closer to the action, they were surfing the internet for greener pastures during early 2020.

What they found posted from the small town of Brazil, 64 miles southwest of Indianapolis, showed some promise.

The Victorian home was built circa 1885 by Judge Daniel McGregor and his wife Bell. When Bell died in 1928, she willed the home to the community YMCA. In 1949, a gymnasium with a full basketball court was added to the home.

What a perfect place to have a home and walk through a doorway onto a 3,000-square-foot court to fill with qual-

ity antiques.“I said to Mike, let’s get it,” Michelle

said. “He thought I was crazy, but I fi-nally talked him into it. I call it opening his mind. Days later we took a flight to

Indiana. It was really a leap of faith for both of us. We jumped with a dream.”

The dream is called, appropriately, Off The Hinge Antiques & Home Décor. It is located at 37 West Kruzan St., about four

blocks from downtown Brazil.Packing up and moving from Mon-

Collectors’ treasure trove finds new homes at Green Valley Auctions

By Susan Emerson Nutter

MT. CRAWFORD, Va. — Green Valley Auctions recently hosted a two-day, online only event with the second day featuring the lovely collections put together by Bet-ty and the late Jim Oglesby of Virginia Beach. This couple loved to collect and did so across a wide range of genres resulting in a very interesting auction.

Furniture offered included examples of Chippendale, Queen Anne, Georgian & Empire pieces. Brown furniture was fea-tured with a very functional New England Queen Anne scroll top highboy bringing $1,502. Made of cherry, this highboy boast-ed an 11-drawer configuration with the piece being 86 inches high overall.

A heavily inlaid low boy standing 32 inches high and being 33 inches wide and 20 inches deep brought $598, while a fine Georgian eight drawer, chest on chest in mahogany was bid to $819.

Clocks were in abundance this day as this collecting area was one the Oglesbys loved. The top lot of the clock’s honors went

tana to Indiana during the first crucial month of a pandemic presented a few problems with, perhaps, a silver lining. “There was not a lot of traffic on the highway; but all the restaurants were closed. We ate mostly at truck stops.”

Upon arriving, the gymnasium had to be re-roofed, there was quite a bit of electrical re-wiring and Mike was gen-tly coerced into hanging Michelle’s col-lection of 30 children’s scooters (one all wooden with spoke wheels dating from 1915) from the ceiling. They are not for sale, but they’re interesting “eye can-dy.”

“The traffic already has been incred-ible. We have a hard time keeping up. We buy mostly through the week and open-up on the weekends (although they do take appointments on the weekdays). But everybody has been very supportive and it’s already busier than I could have imagined.”

Mike, for his part, is a “hands-on,” perfectionist. “I go through every piece of furniture we buy. If there’s a broken piece, I replace it. If it needs stripping,

repair or refinishing, it gets done right. I pull every drawer out and make sure they move smoothly. It must be up to our standards to go onto the showroom. Every piece is ready to go into your home.”

The Churchills aren’t afraid to tackle the big pieces, back bars, gas pumps or any petrolinia, a solid oak deacon bench and large oversized cabinets. They also deal in smalls, such as crocks, some glass and unique hard-to-find antiques.

“We love this business,” Michelle says. “We’re now well-known in town, although we don’t do a lot of buying here. But I love to meet people, find these things with such cool history and bring them back here to and give them a new home. We’re all happy to be set-tled into our new home and business.”

to the Foster Campos Federal style eglo-mise banjo clock that realized $2,302. A hand-painted image of Aurora in her char-iot pulled by two white steeds ushering in a new day with the sun rising behind them decorated the clock’s circular lower portion.

Another banjo clock, this being a Walter H. Durfee example with a mahogany case was taken to $1,113, while an acorn shelf clock having a gorgeous acorn stylized case went to $1,000. The painted image of what appears to be a Federal style home decorat-ed the base of this clock and was identified with the words, “Residence of J.C. Brown, Esqu.”

Loads of decorative art items rounded out this two-day sale. A room size oriental rug measuring 13 feet 10 inches by 9 feet 9 inches done in creams, oranges, greens, and navy blue was bid to $2,552.

Art glass also crossed the auction block with several examples by Charles Lot-ton up for sale. A signed and dated 1989 pulled feather design vase that stood 10 ½” high made $361. The vase’s colors includ-ed a pink body with gold accents and green swirls that spread to a feather like design over the main body of the vase.

The artistic beauty of cloisonne is unde-niable. When an almost 14-inch-long box is covered in such beauty, it is going to com-mand top dollar. Just such a box, that was 5 ½ inches high and 6 ½ inches deep, sold for $452. Its decoration included yellow and white florals, green vines and leaves, Oriental motifs in an orange color all on a royal blue field.

Art offered covered a wide range of styles and themes, but the miniature examples are what seemed to be leading this area. At only 5 ¼ inch by 6 ¼ inch, an oil on can-vas titled “Evening Light” by English artist Elizabeth Brown realized $354.

A 16th or 17th oil portrait believed to be of the Archduke Charles Stiermark (Steire-mark), 1540-1590, deaccessioned from the Cleveland Museum of Art, sold for $792. Charles was the archduke of Australia and the father of 15 children. The artist of this work is unknown.

Right: The Churchills have left the old scoreboard, basketball hoops and

YMCA sign in their 3,000-square-foot showroom.

Many of older Brazil customers appre-ciate their preserving the site, which

always generates interesting conversa-tions.

Right: A double-wide hall tree should make a statement in any home. Using his 20 years’ experience in woodwork-

ing, Mike Churchill will not let any piece hit the showroom without being “ready to take home.” His standards at Off The

Hinge Antiques & Home Decor is very high.

Left & Above: A bid of $452 won this cloi-sonné valuables box with a blue back-ground and featuring floral (exterior) and butterfly (interior) motifs.

Below: The look and details of this H.B. Horton’s Ithaca calendar parlor clock were impressive. Standing 21 inches high, this beauty made $658.

Above: Having a gorgeous acorn shape and acorn finials, the hand-painted im-age of the “Residence of J.C. Brown, Esq.” at its base sealed the deal for this acorn shelf clock which garnered a $1,000 winning bid.

Garnet Valley, Pa. — Briggs Auction, Inc. is pleased to offer an outstanding and stylish collection of furnishings, fine art, decorative arts, and more at its Fine Estates Auction on Friday, March 26.

The auction will be available for online bidding only. At 11 a.m. on Friday, March 26, the auction will open for real-time, online bidding on two platforms: Bid At Briggs (Briggs Auction’s own online bid-ding platform), and Live Auctioneers.

Highlights of the auction will include a fine collection from the Shapiro Estate. Geraldine (“Gerrie”) Shapiro, a long-time and community-minded resident of Ir-vington, N.Y., was a skilled potter whose creations adorn the spaces of the Irving-ton home she shared with her husband of 54 years, Albert Shapiro, and was a known collector of African and other art. She was also dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of the natu-ral environment, and was instrumental in helping design the Main Street War Memorials and the Rip Van Winkle steps and the bronze statue on Main Street in Irvington.

“As a craftswoman potter with exten-sive landscape design knowledge and ex-pertise, Mrs. Shapiro had a keen eye for style and design, and surrounded herself with furnishings, decoratives, clothing, jewelry, and fine art, that reflected her elegant, interesting style and exquisite taste. We are proud to offer her Estate collection at auction,” says Stephen Turn-er, Owner of Briggs Auction, Inc. “We be-lieve these new-to-the-market pieces will find good homes with eager and discern-ing buyers.”

This carefully curated collection will include a selection of antique, name-brand, and midcentury modern/modern design furnishings, by makers including Frank Lloyd Wright for Cassina Italy, Arper Italia, Holly Hunt, Angelo Corte-si, Dakota Jackson, Saporiti Italia, CY Mann, Harvey Probber, Kittinger, Sten-dig, and more, and also includes a Stein-way Model A baby-grand piano.

The heart of the auction beats in the excellent collection of decorative arts which includes studio art pottery by Ger-aldine Shapiro herself, and by other con-temporary artists such as, Peter Voulkos, Peter Callas, Bennett Bean, William Morris, Jeff Shapiro (no known relation), Jeffrey Zigulis, Paul Chaleff, Nancee Meeker, and many more. The auction will also feature a fine selection of contempo-rary studio art glass by Richard Marquis, John Lewis, Ira Sapir, Vandermark, and others., as well as craftsman puzzle and bureau boxes by Richard Rothbard, Mi-chael Elkan, and Philip Weber.

Fine Asian pottery and ceramics, several Inuit and argillite carvings by Adamie Ashevak, Thomas Amm, Chris-tian White, and Darrell White, and carved marble sculptures by Debra Schaffer and Karen Karnes are also items of note.

A collection of Paolo Soleri Wind Chimes, a Val Bertoia Sound Sculpture, and an interesting assortment of midcen-tury modern and contemporary designer lamps are also featured items in the auc-tion.

The full auction catalog and registra-tion and bidding information is available through Briggs Auction (BriggsAuction.com), or Live Auctioneers (liveauction-eers.com). Preview will be by appoint-ment only on Wednesday, March 24 and Thursday, March 25. Please call or email Briggs Auction to schedule.

evolved, eventually making its way into dining establishments.

During the industrial revolution, in both Europe and America, an urban restaurant industry arose serving industrial and office workers who increasingly relied upon commercial eateries. Across the 19th and early 20th century, transportation advances such as trains, steamships, and eventu-ally airlines exposed people of even modest financial means to fine dining. As well, waves of immigration and two world wars exposed people to foreign cultures leading to the popularity of cuisines from other countries. In the post-war era, the movement to the sub-urbs only served to fuel the number and variety of restaurants available to the growing middle-class. Restaurant din-ing was no longer unusual, and menus were as commonplace as phone books.

In the earliest European restaurants, menus were typically unsophisticated listings of offerings, perhaps augment-ed by a few illustrations. They were physically small, often written on sheets of cardstock. The industrial rev-olution spawned new printing technolo-gies, like color lithography, which gave rise to more ornate menus. During that era, “menu specialist” printing compa-nies formed, designing and printing menus for which they become famous. Names include J. H. Bufford & Sons, L. Prang and Co, and S.D. Childs & Co., which sold particularly for the hotel trade.

Artwork and typography on Victori-an-era menus followed the conventions of the day, featuring elegant imagery like flowers, cherubs, and bucolic scen-ery. In Great Britain, it was often regi-mental themes featuring coats of arms or exotic imagery depicting the far-reaching British Empire. To enhance their richness, menus would often be placed in leather “menu books” bound with a silk cord.

Menus grew in importance in the 1920s when restaurateurs began to view menus as a marketing tool. Menu designers turned their attention towards Art Deco and Art Nouveau graphics and color became widely used. Larger-format menus became popular in the 1930s and manufacturing advances like die-cutting were widely employed. Manufacturing efficiencies also took hold because color offset print-ing was impractical for short press runs, printing companies often pro-duced pictorial menu “shells” with blank spaces for the dishes and prices to be typed or handwritten by restau-rants themselves.

In the 19th-century, it was relatively uncommon for menus to display prices. Including prices didn’t become popular until well into the 20th-century. Yet, even in the 20th century, it was com-mon for restaurants to offer two menus: a regular menu with prices listed and a “blind” menu without pricing. Blind menus were given to female compan-ions of male diners, under the presump-tion the female guest should not be pressured by pricing, or during busi-ness dinners when a host felt it inap-propriate for his guests to see costs.

By mid-century, cocktail menus came into common use. The cocktail menu has a history all its own, often tied to promoting the allure of a bar’s brand. Cocktail menus often had glossy illus-trations of the drinks paired with entic-ing drink names but very little detail – all to create a sense of trade secret.

Novelty menus produced in odd shapes, also became popular across much of the 20th-century, typically used as marketing tools to attract din-ers. They became popular in bars and nightclubs, specialty restaurants, and for children’s menus. Every shape and size imaginable were produced – from

die-cuts of Seattle’s Space needle to cowboy hats in Western-themed steak-houses. Some restaurants turned to using postcard menus which could eventually be mailed to friends or fam-ily, furthering their marketing impact.

By the 1980s, lamination and full-col-or photography were commonplace. From that point forward, menus reached a Zenith of practicality. Yet, it also seemed as if the halcyon days of the menu as a distinctive marketing tool, anchored in art and design, had begun to wane. Collectors seem to be of the same mindset, gravitating mainly to pieces made prior to the 1970s.

Given the huge variety of menus,

collectors can easily be drawn to the entire range of choices. More typically, they’ll end up specializing in a certain type of menu. Noted earlier, menus from long-lost restaurants have a natu-ral appeal. But collectors are also drawn to specific categories such as the elegant dinner menus from ocean lin-ers, trains, and early airliners and sometimes from specific lines. Some collect menus associated with special events like Presidential dinners. Oth-ers drill down to a specific cuisine like vintage Chinese restaurant menus from the days when a Chinese meal was considered exotic dining. Menus from roadside diners, lunch counters,

and early fast-food restaurants interest those with affinity towards America’s post-war, often car-oriented culture. And those vintage cocktail menus - not only do they have their fans, but they have also been instrumental in the revival of classic mixology and cocktail culture.

The challenge for any collector is in finding copies that are in reasonably good condition - not stained or torn beyond appreciation. Many menus were lost to time. Ponder that the next time you find yourself sitting at a restaurant table. Perhaps you might want to ask your server for a copy of the menu for posterity.
