Head Coach Kevin Langan sat down with the Charlotte 49ers athletic media relations staff to discuss his goals, thoughts, and outlook for the 2015 season.

what are your overall thoughts and expectations of the 2015 season? We had a fantastic spring season with another undefeated spring for us- it was a chance to get the core group together. So it’s been a two-year project with the core group having only lost three players. Overall, the spring was very exciting. The guys have been away, so they’ll start to trickle back into town. Our expectations are high, like they always are here. The goals are pretty crystal-clear from year to year- we want to have a great

nonconference schedule and results, we want to be conference regular season champions, we want to win the championship, and we want to be called ‘out of the hat’ when the NCAA tournament is announced. And then we’ll sit down and write out our goals for the NCAA tournament, so the expectations here are always high and we can’t wait to get started.

Conference USA is a really strong league, with multiple bids, and the 49ers won the regular season last year. what are your thoughts on the league itself? It is an incredibly strong league. I think last year it was the fourth highest in terms of RPI. Four teams got invited to the tournament, and New Mexico was right on the bubble- that could have made it a five-team conference, which there are not that many of them around. This year looking at the teams, looking at the returning players and getting a real feel for the league, I’ll be very surprised if we are not in the top four again or even higher in terms of RPI. There are some wonderful teams and wonderful programs that are bringing back a lot of players. We have recruited very well and we are going to be very strong this year, so it’ll be a tough league like it always is every year. Our goals are pretty clear- we want to go win it all again.

Charlotte always has a tough schedule, and you mention RPI. At one point, maybe three-quarters of the way into the season last year, the 49ers had the number one RPI in the country. That speaks to the schedule and what the program has been able to do.? Yes, I believe two years ago we had the eighth or ninth hardest schedule in the country, and then last year we were ranked number one in the RPI and this

year is no different. We want a really tough out-of-conference schedule because we want to test the guys and we want to be playing at the top top-end of college soccer. One, it helps the RPI, and two, it just gets the team prepared and ready to play at that level every week going into conference and hopefully, the NCAA tournament. We are not big on bringing in ‘cupcakes’, or games where we’re trying to get a winning record. We just want to win every game, but we want to win as many hard games as possible. I think that’s the best way to approach college soccer. It’ll be another tough, challenging schedule for us. Some great teams are on there, and then we’ll go into

Conference USA and that’ll be another challenge for us, one we can’t wait to get started on.

The 49ers have great fan support. Playing this kind of schedule and the success of the program has obvi-ously played a lot into that? Absolutely., looking now at the schedule in front of us, obviously every game is a challenge, a new eventful horizon. We never take anyone lightly, and you approach every game the same, but when you invite South Carolina, Kentucky, Clemson, Old Dominion… our fans will get to see them in front of their very eyes, and hopefully that should generate a lot of interest. That should make for really exciting nights of college soccer. We’re hoping the fans will come out in great numbers again- three of the last four years we’ve been ranked in the top 15 in attendance, which is wonderful for our players. It really is an extra man and it really is a home field advantage; it really does push over the line in those close games. We’re hoping that these great college programs coming to us will also entice our fan base to come out in great numbers as well.

The 49ers return an experienced goalkeeper, who has been with the program for several years, in second-team All-Con-ference usa goalkeeper austin pack. but there are also other guys who have been with the program for a couple of years.

what are your thoughts? Austin had a breakout season last year. We’ve known his great strengths through his whole time at Charlotte and last year, it really came to fruition for Austin. He had a great year. I believe he was an all-region goal-keeper, which is well deserved. He’s been working extremely hard through the spring and the offseason. He is a wonderful shot stopper, an extremely athletic goalkeeper, but he’s been working with his feet, working on his presence, and he’s been almost ever-present through the summer. He just can’t wait to go into his senior year, so we’re hoping for big things from Austin again. With Austin, we have Justin Savingnon and he’s shown good signs that he’s improving and doing well. Elliot [Panicco] joined us at Christmas, and Elliot’s potential is for everyone to see. He has come in and he has great work ethic, great training, and works hard with his future with us. We also have Banks Fisher as well, and Banks has come in and he’s really embraced the culture we have here and he’s shown great signs of improvement as well. So we have four great goal-keepers, one which is great for training environment, but two, it’s wonderful because they push each other every day. They have their own little union going on where they get to work on their own and get to push each other. Austin [Pack] has really established himself almost as the ‘big brother’ of the group. He’s helping the other ones along which has been good. He’s going to leave behind a strong legacy as a leader.

Defenders have always been a strong point through the history of the 49er program. Some of the most successful teams have had very strong defenders, and of course, there are some really strong ones returners led by All-Con-ference usa selection biko bradnock-brennan and Conference usa all-freshman team selections luke waecther and Matej dekovic. Thoughts on that group? We return pretty much the same back four except for Nick Barnhorst, who had an awesome career here. Barney [Barnhorst] didn’t always get the headlines, but just to say a bit about him- he was just a fantastic man behind the scenes- so fit, so conscientious, so respectful, and he brought people along with him. He had a unique personality where he was really respected, but also could push people, so we wish Barney all the best as he moves on. We return everybody else. Biko [Bradnock-Brennan] is obvi-ously growing in strides from year to year. He’s looking like one of the best defenders in college soccer. Luke Waecter alongside Biko has forged a fantastic relationship.

Matej Dekovic had a standout season last year. His first season, he was correctly voted all-freshman in the conference. He did wonderful for us, and we also hope this year that David Mayer can stay injury free. It was tough for him in his senior year having to redshirt, but we now have four players that have been around the program for a long time who understand the accountability and the commitment we want in our defenders and the style of play we play. That’s exciting for us. If you add into the mix Jared Kent coming back from injury and then Malcolm Stewart and Sean Bow-man. These guys are all getting to learn and getting to work with all these great college soccer players ahead of them and their improving from day to day and we are excited for their future. We are also bringing in Curtis Hansford and Callum Montgomery, two freshmen this year, and they’ll be looking to fill the gaps of players who moved on last year. We’re excited for those two. There going to come in and we’re going to get them up to speed quickly and the other guys will bring them along on how we want them to play here.

You return the majority of the midfielders group as well led by All-Conference USA selections Brandt Bronico and dominic bonilla? I think we return all of the midfielders from last year. What was exciting for us last year was how we could move players around. We had good depth in midfield. Depending on our opponent, depending on suspen-sions, or little dips in form or injury, we were in a very comfortable position last year where we could put players in, bring players out and rest, and the performance kept moving forward- it didn’t drop off at all. In center midfield, Conor [Agnew], Max [Rodriguez] and Mark [Sloan] really made that home in the middle field for us. They built some great relationships in the game; all of them bring something different. Mark is really competitive, Max is a very good passer of the ball, and Conor is very athletic in there, so you can start to balance the relationship of what we’re looking for to win games of soccer.

Out wide, Dominic [Bonilla] and Brandt [Bronico] and Zhuvonte [Wilson]all had really great seasons last year and good springs, so in a game they all bring something a bit different. Dominic is a fantastic ‘1 v 1’ player, Z [Wilson] has phenomenal top plays and Brandt is very good at roaming and finding the ball and getting to good areas to hurt opponents. They all give you something different to look at every game. Also similar to David [Mayer], we decided to welcome back Robby [Thomas]. He had to redshirt his senior year last year. In a game, he brings something even more different to midfield. He’s an unbelievable presence, who just helps you dominate to win the midfield. When you have those four players in the middle it brings something different. It makes it exciting for me to see what team we are going to pick to win what kind of games. Who else we got in there? We got Brucie [Daniel Bruce]. Daniel had a wonderful spring, he scored some goals and really got the grips with the style and the system we have here, so we’re excited with good things about him as well. Tommy and Callum [Montgomery], who can both play midfield. Callum’s more of a passing and a stronger midfielder and Tommy’s a very mobile, technical player. Both of them I imagine will come straight into the mix and will be looking to compete straight away for playing time, which is exciting. It’s a very very strong midfielder core this year, which is good.

The final group is the forwards. Last year, the 49ers were one of the highest scoring teams in the country. What about that group led by preseason All-American Kyle Parker? Last year we were the sixth-highest scor-ers in the country. A few teams above us beat some Division II teams by double figures, so it would have been a bit higher. We have the forwards, starting with Kyle Parker. Obviously he’s had some wonderful years here and has con-tinued to improve and work hard. He’ll be our leading goal scorer, like the last two years. He’s a wonderful finisher; Kyle gives you so much more. He looks to play between the lines and works extremely hard. Similar to midfield, we have very different forwards that bring different skill sets, different attributes to each game. We have Hans Honer, who is potentially one of the best hold-up forwards in the country. He’s very strong with his back to play and he can

hold the ball and can establish the ball in four areas for you. He’s extremely powerful and strong off the crosses, so he’s a player who suits a certain style, a certain game. You have Harrison Steadman, who’s ex-tremely quick. He likes to run off of shoulders, and he can stretch defenders. He’s a very good finisher. We also have Dean Rutherford, who’s really working hard and his fitness levels are high. His athleticism has come along nicely and Dean’s potentially one of the best finishers in the program. He’s a player in those ‘crowded box’ areas, where we have lots of possession in the other teams final third. Simply, he’s a player you turn to to score some goals for you. Joining us is Maclean Holbrook. He’s had a wonderful youth career up in Raleigh. He’s kind of a cross between Hans Honer and Harrison. He can run in behind. He has good pace but he’s also a big target forward that can lick play and play through as well, so I’m excited to see how well he does this year.

You’ve mentioned culture and the idea that it is not just a team now, but it is a program. what exactly is the culture of 49ers men’s soccer? The best way to sum it up is the sum of the parts. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Basically that just means we’re a team. The star of the team is the team. We don’t have these standout players that everyone’s going to. We want it to be a team system for us; everything we

do is for the team. That means it starts with just accountability. First, you look yourself in the mirror and hold yourself accountable. Then when you come in, your teammates hold

you accountable to work hard everyday, and your coaches hold you accountable to work hard everyday. When you get that right, it’s always a challenge. It is a challenge when results go well, and when they don’t. You have to keep a finger on the pulse to make sure that culture remains very strong. There is no secret- it’s hard work and ac-countability. When people talk about the great team spirit we have or the great comradery we have, it just starts with accountability. If you want to look at anybody who sits down next to you in the locker room or laces his boots up and joins the field, you’ll know that he’s going to do everything he can for you to win the game of soccer and be successful. When you get that, it’s very special. When you get that, you win games.

Kevin Langan became the seventh coach in the 36-year history of the 49ers men’s soccer program on January 3, 2012. Langan, who was Charlotte’s associate head coach prior to becoming head coach, has been a member of the 49ers coaching staff for the last six seasons. Langan enters the 2015 season with a 41-14-7 record (.718) as 49ers head coach, which is the highest winning percentage by a head coach in his first three years in Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer program’s history. As a member of the coaching staff since 2009, Langan played an integral role in helping the 49ers reach the College Cup Finals in 2011. During his six years as a member of the 49ers coaching staff, Charlotte has won 81 games, reached a College Cup Championship game, captured two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles, a Conference USA regular-season title and a Conference USA Tournament title and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. During his three seasons as head coach, the 49ers have reached the NCAA Tournament three times including garnering a national seed twice. Sixteen players have earned All-Conference honors including nine named to the first-team, along with five more being named to the All-Freshman teams. Two players (Donnie Smith and Kyle Parker) have garnered Conference individual honors over the last three years. Thirteen players have received NSCAA All-Region honors, including seven on the first-team. Eight Niners have earned NSCAA Scholar All-Region honors and three players (Donnie Smith, Tyler Gibson and Aidan Kirkbride) earned NSCAA Scholar-All-American honors. Tyler Gibson also was named a 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-American. Over the last three years, five players have gone onto professional soccer careers. In his first season as head coach of the 49ers, he guided Charlotte to the most successful season by a first-year head coach in the program’s history. In 2012, Langan guided the 49ers to 15 wins, an Atlantic 10 regular-season title, an appearance in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to the eventual runners-up Georgetown, and a national ranking the entire season. In 2012, the team posted the second-best defensive record in the program’s history and celebrated two NSCAA Scholar All-Americans (Tyler Gibson and Donnie Smith). He also became the first coach in the program’s history to start their career undefeated after seven games. In addition, two 49ers (Donnie Smith and Jennings Rex) were drafted by the MLS in his first year. In his second season as head coach of the 49ers, he guided Charlotte to a Conference USA Tournament title, a national seed in the NCAA Tournament and a national ranking for the majority of the season. In 2013, two 49ers earned national academic honors as Tyler Gibson was named a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American and Aidan Kirkbride earned NSCAA Scholar All-American honors. David Schlee was Charlotte’s first-ever four-year letter winner, a key figure in Charlotte’s rapid soccer development. From the initial year that the 49ers fielded a team (1976), when the program struggled to a 3-10 record, to the year he graduated (1979) and helped the Mean Green post a 16-7-1 record, Schlee was always ready to go, ready to make the extra tackle or extra run. The soccer program is earning national attention and Schlee’s a winner who will be remembered as a dedicated individual who helped lay the groundwork for the 49ers’ success. Schlee was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on the eve of the 1980 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. An annual memorial award in his name has been established, thanks primarily to former Athletic Foundation Board of Directors’ member Dick Dunn and his son, David, a three-year letterwinner. An award is presented at the end of each year to the 49er soccer player that best exemplifies David Schlee’s desire to succeed.

Conference USA enters its third decade in 2015-16 as it continues to compete and promote the success of its student-athletes. The league has adapted to the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics over its first 20 seasons, but the commitment to excellence, integrity, leadership and its student athletes in competition, aca-demics and community is unwavering.

Conference USA enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU.

Since beginning competition in 1995, Conference USA teams have combined for 88 bowl appearances in foot-ball, 102 NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball including three Final Fours, 63 NCAA baseball appear-ances including six College World Series berths, 79 NCAA soccer tournament appearances including four trips to the College Cup, and 35 individual national champions in track and field and cross country.

Success is not limited to athletic achievement, however, as 198 Conference USA student-athletes have garnered Academic All-America honors, 691 have achieved academic all-district laurels and thousands of student-athletes have earned their college degrees.

DR. PHILIPDUBOIS

A native of Oakland, Calif., Philip L. Du-bois attended the University of Califor-nia, Davis, where he graduated in 1972 with highest honors with an undergrad-uate degree in political science, includ-ing election to Phi Beta Kappa. He then earned master’s (1974) and doctoral (1978) degrees in the field from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dubois began his academic career in 1976 at the University of California, Davis. Over the next 15 years, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks to full professor and held various administra-tive posts, including associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. In 1991, Dubois was recruited to UNC Charlotte, where he spent the next six and a half years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Under his leadership, UNC Charlotte opened its first class-room facility in Uptown Charlotte and launched its first doctoral pro-grams. In 1997, Dubois was named president of the University of Wy-oming. In that role, he led the development and implementation of comprehensive academic, support services, and capital construction plans for Wyoming’s only university. Private contributions to the insti-tution more than quadrupled during his tenure. He was honored in 2004 by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with its District VI Chief Executive Lead-ership Award. On March 18, 2005, Dubois was named UNC Charlotte’s fourth chancellor, and he assumed that role on July 15. As the University’s leader, Dubois has focused his efforts on building UNC Charlotte’s vis-ibility and support in the greater Charlotte region; has led long-range planning to accommodate expected enrollment of 35,000 students; has championed a number of key capital construction projects, including completion of EPIC and UNC Charlotte Center City, located in the heart of the Queen City; has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of critical business processes; and has implemented an intercollegiate football program starting fall 2013. Dr. Dubois and his wife, Lisa Lewis Dubois, have three adult children: Logan, Taylor, and Ali. They are the first family to occupy the chancellor’s official campus residence, Bissell House.

Keyed the 49ers successful bid to add football in 2013 and landed it in an FBS Conference (C-USA) before it held its first practice.

Spearheaded nearly $100 million worth of facilities construction, including Jerry Richardson Stadium/McColl-Richardson Field, James H. Barnhardt Center/Halton Arena, Irwin Belk Track and Field/Transamerica Field, the Wells Fargo Fieldhouse, Miltimore-Wallis Athletics and Academic Training Center, Stubblefield Golf Center, Robert and Mariam Hayes Baseball Stadium, Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex and Softball Stadium renovations.

Helped attract 1994 NCAA Men’s Final Four and 1996 NCAA Woman’s Final Four, 1999 and 2000 NCAA Div. I Men’s Soccer College Cups, the 1997 AAU Junior Olympics and a variety of NCAA Basketball Tournament rounds to Charlotte.

Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose is one of the most successful and well-respected Athletics Directors in the nation. She was one of five finalists for the 2013 Sports Business Journal’s Athletic Director of the Year Award. At the time of her appointment in 1990, she was just the third female to be put in charge of a Division I program. In 1999-2000, she became the first female to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. She served a five-year term (2000-2004) on that committee. She also completed a term as 2003-04 President of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was one of less than 70 university presidents and athletics administrators invited to NCAA President Mark Emmert’s Summer 2011 Retreat. Chief among her accomplishments with the university is the systematic growth of the 49ers program. That growth culminated with the unveiling of the Charlotte 49ers football program in 2013 that began as an FCS Independent and was fast-tracked to land in the FBS Conference USA in 2015. The football fieldhouse was named by donor Dale Halton in her honor: Judy W. Rose Football Center With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the Sun Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA to the Atlantic 10 and back to FBS C-USA in 2013-14. She has overseen the 49ers growth into a program that is fully-funded at the NCAA level for athletic scholarships. She has helped develop nearly $100 million worth of athletic facilities which have enhanced playing venues, academic services, strength and conditioning programs and training and medical support to improve the experience of each and every student-athlete. She is instrumental in attracting national sporting events to Charlotte such as the 1994 Men’s Basketball Final Four, the 1996 Women’s Basketball Final Four, the 1999 and 2000 Men’s Soccer College Cups as well as a variety of NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament rounds, including the upcoming 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball 2nd and 3rd rounds. The 49ers have enjoyed similar success in competition and the classroom. Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA play, or both. Prior to her stint as A.D., only two programs touted such success. Meanwhile, the athletic department now boasts a cumulative GPA of over 3.0 -- and has for 18 straight semesters. Along the way, Rose has reaped her share of awards, for professional suc-cess, contributions to the community and leadership. In June 2013 she earned the Business Journal’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual Women in Business Luncheon and was named to the Business Journal’s Women in Busi-ness Class of 2013.
