HOPE OF JOY: CAROLINA MEDICAL MISSIONBy Jaime Lagasca Still fresh in my mind were the joy of excitement and laughter that reverberated across the rooms and hallways at Dr. PJ Garcia Memorial Hospital in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, and at Jose Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga every time Dr. James Kiley removed the eye dressing of an indigent patient whom he operated cataract the previous day! “I can see, I can see” was said repeatedly, as tears of joy were pouring in their eyes. CMM BARRIO FIESTA 2017 The CMM Barrio Fiesta 2017 was held on Saturday September 24, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh NC. The annual celebration drew a crowd of over 160 volunteers and friends of the Carolina Medical Mission (CMM).

Before dinner, Monsignor Lewis co-celebrated a thanksgiving mass in appreciation for CMM’s 24 years of service and outreach. CMM 2018 in Dinalupihan, Bataan marks

our 25 year of service to the Philippines. The Barrio Fiesta was an early Silver Anniversary party and an additional fundraiser for Bataan. Past CMM coordinators were awarded plaques and volunteers were given certificates for their invaluable service to our kababayan.

Thank you to all our dedicated volunteers for making the Barrio Fiesta a great success. We thank all of our food donors for the delicious Filipino cuisine. And thank you to all the attendees who came to support the mission’s efforts, and to spread CMM’s message of hope.

We are glad that everyone enjoyed the evening of delicious food, delightful conversation, and deserving recognitions.

What a wonderful time to catch up with our CMM friends as we prepare for the upcoming CMM 2018 Silver Anniversary joint medical mission to Dinalupihan, Bataan. Other missions include Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro and Nueva Ecija.

Dr. Art de Leon were conducted in another venue. Patients told us, they did not have money to pay, but offered prayer for us for many blessings. The experience was overwhelming and satisfying that no words can explain it. My special thanks go to Adonis Ng who wore hats of all trades at this mission, as our driver, security,

runner, and keeping me posted on everything.

Spreading the word of my unforgettable CMM experience got very positive feedback from

people. I was able to talk to Dr. Michael Sison, an eye surgeon in Quezon City who conducted free cataract surgery once a week in San Fernando to join the mission. Dr. Sison has since become a CMM mainstay. I also met with Mayor Ariel de Guzman of Mabini, Pangasinan and his wife Iva, the sister of Melinda Turner of Greenville, NC. Ariel and Iva were the CMM 1997 Philippine coordinators. When I attended the Cuison family reunion in NY with my wife Eva Quinto Lagasca, we presented a poster about CMM. We were able to convince Eva’s first cousin Dr. Elmo† (Sergio) Cuison and his wife Dr. Navora Gapas-Cuison† to join future missions. Elmo and Navora became long time CMM volunteers. Also, other friends and acquaintances who joined the missions through the years were Dr. Rob and Melinda Turner†, Dr. Lee and Frances Trent, and Dr. Angelina Edralin Knox† President of Phil-Am Wilmington, (Angelina reconnected with her long lost first cousin, Nene Edralin Marshall† of Louisburg, wife of Jim Marshall, another CMM volunteer), and more. As PAANC President that year, I was able to act as a roving ambassador for our organization and CMM by attending functions of the different smaller Phil-Am organizations in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, Wilmington-Cape Fear, Jacksonville-Camp Lejeune, Havelock-Cherry Point, Fayetteville, Asheville, Charlotte, Louisburg, Greensboro, Lumberton, NC and Columbia, SC. As years have gone by, my mind is still strong but my body is weak, like most people my own age. I encourage the Carolina Medical Mission family to support this very worthwhile effort and cause, to sustain the legacy started by Art, Rosemary, Fred, and Anita. I welcome Dr. Rob Turner, the new Medical Director and Dr. Benjamin Yu, the new Surgical Director; and I send best wishes to Drs. Art de Leon and Fred Ng. Also, I would like to salute Anita Ng, overall coordinator on her previous work, and to congratulate her replacement through the years, the very dedicated and hard working, Emma Dempsey. Thank you to the Carolina Medical Mission family. You have always been a part of my life. God bless us all!

CMM REMEMBERS Entering our 25th year of service, we remember all of our beloved CMM family who are no longer with us. This year we lost two compassionate and dedicated volunteers, James Marshall and Brena Carpio. James Marshall of Louisburg, NC passed away on March 25, 2017. Jim volunteered with CMM 1998 in Zamboanga & CMM 2000 in Zambales and Pangasinan. He was a generous supporter of CMM for nearly 20 years.

Brena Carpio of Tampa, Florida died on June 29, 2017. She was long time member of the Philippine American Association of North Carolina. She was PAANC president in 1995. She coordinated the CMM 1995 and CMM 2000 to Zambales. Brena continued to volunteer with the mission over the years. She had wonderful and lasting influence on the young adults of PAANC.

It was only in 1754 that Bataan was created into a separate province through the efforts of Governor-General Pedro Manuel de Arandia. The new province included Balanga, Abucay, Samal, Orani, Llana-Hermosa, San Juan de Dinalupihan, Pilar, Orion (all formerly of Pampanga province), Mariveles, Bagac and Morong (formerly of the corregimiento of Mariveles).

In May, 1706, Hermosa was made a center of missionary activities and became a pueblo (town) and a parish. Dinalupihan remained a “sitio” of Hermosa administered by a capellan (chaplain). The natives fought valiantly against the Spanish Conquistadores and were never vanquished through the use of force. (This was the basis for the Legendary origin of the name DINALUPIHAN. It was said that the place got so famous for its fighting spirit that it came to be known as “di-nalupigan” or not conquered. The name “Di-nalupigan” stuck, but as luck would have it, the letter “g” was inadvertently changed to “h” during the registration of its name. Thus, the town with a fighting heart is now known as Dinalupihan.)” Excerpt from Dinalupihan.gov.ph
