Department of Physics and Electronics, Rajdhani College, University of Delhi in association
with The National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) – Delhi Chapter. The event mainly
sponsored by NASI.
Prof. Ajoy Ghatak (Chairman, Delhi Chapter, NASI, and currently a MN Saha distinguished
Professor, NASI, Allahabad) and Dr SK Dhaka (Coordinator) have planned and conceptualize
the event to be organized at Rajdhani College for the maximum benefit of large community of
science students. Many active members of NASI such as Professor Enakshi Sharma, Head of the
Department of Electronics, South Campus, University of Delhi, Prof. Rastogi, former Professor
of Physics, Meerut University, Dr. Manoj Saxena, Associate Professor, Department of
Electronics, DDU College graced the occasion. There were about 160 participants including 15
students of Kalindi College.
Main speakers of the program were Prof. Anurag Sharma, Head of Physics department at IIT
Delhi and Prof. Pradeep Gupta, IIT Delhi. Prof. Anurag Sharma delivered an outstanding lecture
on ‘Gandhi and Science’. Prof. Sharma explained thinking and scientific temperament of
Gandhiji lovingly known as “Bapu”. He emphasized the teachings of Gandhiji in his lecture.
Professor Sharma also related Gandhiji and science to the present scenario. He made the
audience think critically about the scientific temperament practiced by them in their daily life.
The students got truly motivated and thoroughly and enjoyed his lecture. Second lecture was
delivered by Prof Pradeep Gupta, which was focused on “Optical tweezers – the invention of
which got the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics”. Prof. Gupta explained the working of these

perspective”. He has elaborated with pictures and diagrams about the conditions of the internal
organs during long exposure of air pollution. Lecture was very informative and landmark in the
sense of taking initiative by the teaching community along with the students. How to protect our
environment is a need of the hour and action is required by all organizations in coordination to
save young generations from the danger of the premature deaths.
The talk started with a brief introduction to Active Galactic Nuclei, a term which generally refers
to extremely bright central region of a galaxy. A short description of a black hole and how
special relativity prohibits things (including light) from escaping a Black Hole was presented.
Students were also shown that why a black hole of a gargantuan proportion is thought to reside at
the centre of these galaxies and are believed to be powering those AGNs. The second part of the
talk was more interactive and consisted of students receiving some basic training in Python
programming. Students were told about how to do some basic plotting using ‘matplotlib’.
Students were also encouraged to plot the Planck’s function using python and were shown how
black body curves can be extremely helpful to astronomers as by using the Wein’s displacement
law, one can find the temperature of different stars along with its spectral classification. The talk
concluded by showing a beautiful description of the recently concluded ‘lunar eclipse’ on the
software stellarium. Students were able to measure the entire duration of total lunar eclipse.

Environment and Related Issues
In the beginning of the semester the Environment Issues committee installed a composting unit
which was inaugurated by Dr. Rajesh Tondon. This unit can produce 25 kg of compost daily and
has been operating daily ever since. In collaboration with Student Welfare Committee, we
organized a lecture by Dr. Anupam Joshi on the first day of the academic session 2018-19. The
objective of this program was to make students aware about general environmental issues as they
started a new chapter of their life.
The Environment and Related Issues Committee of Rajdhani College often organizes
environmental related programs. Various lectures were organized by the committee on 30
October 2018 under the series in which two speakers were invited. The first speaker of this
program was Dr. Anju Goyal, TERI. Dr. Anju has been associated with more than twenty air
related projects. She informed that due to air pollution, more than 3 lakh deaths occur worldwide
every year which is mainly due to the PM 2.5 pollutants. She also said that in India where there
were 17 Air Monitoring stations in 1982, there are more than 900 today. At least 70-80% areas
of Delhi are battling with increasing levels of PM10. The responsible reasons include vehicular
pollution, burning of substances generated from agriculture, pollutants produced from the
industry.
The second speaker of the program was Professor Yutaka Matsumi, Nagoya University, Japan.
Prof Matsumi has created many air quality testing equipments. According to him, PM 2.5 level
in India is 17 times more than Japan. This PM 2.5 going to the inner lungs of the human beings
affects the health. As a result, many people are suffering from diseases nowadays. Prof.
Matsumi’s Capital College has been associated with the Physics Department of our college for
many years. He is bringing these devices in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and rural areas in the coming
times. At the end, Dr. S. K. Dhaka gave a vote of thanks. Dr. Rajesh Giri, Principal of the
College expressed his concern over the rising air pollution and said that taking action for air
purification was most important task for coming generation.
As we entered into the new year, the committee organized two-day national conference on
Emerging Challenges of Environmental Health, Society and Policies in collaboration with
Department of Environmental Studies, University of Delhi on 15- 16 February 2019. The
programme was inaugurated by Prof. Inderjeet Singh, and Padmabhushan Shri Chandi Prasad
Bhatt delivered an inspirational speech for the participants and students. Prof. Radhey Shyam
Sharma was present as Guest of Honor with Prof. Inderjeet Singh as Chief Guest.
Shri Chandi Prasad Bhatt, who has been honored with the Gandhi Peace Prize, said that the
plains of the country were created from the soil brought out by the rivers emanating from the
Himalayas. There is a deep interconnect between the Himalayas and the plains. The father of the
Chipko movement in India further elaborated that the rivers bring large quantities of soil from
the Himalayas in the rainy season, causing the flood of rivers. If there is a flood in the rain, then
there is no water in the rivers in summer. The level of groundwater is getting low, the agriculture
sector is badly affected, the problem of drinking water has arisen. He said that due to the lack of
adequate water for irrigation, the agricultural growth rate in the year 2015-16 reached a low level
of 1.2 percent. The Magsaysay Award winner also opined that there is a need to understand
where and how much development is to be done. There is a need for protection of small plants
along with large trees. The rains will come, we can’t stop it, but we can reduce its effect. Small
flora gradually absorb water and prevent overflow. On one side the disaster is controlled, on the
other side rivers, streams and waterfalls are kept. This is the rule of nature, but this rule has been
rejected in modern development. Chipko emerged following Gandhi's path which solved the
problem and also showed the way to the world.
Welcoming all the speakers at the two-day national conference, Principal Dr. Rajesh Giri
described environment as the greatest concern for the future of human civilization.
More than 35 participants presented their paper on four sub-themes on the topic Climate Change
and Conservation of Biodiversity, Human Health and Environment, Environmental Law and
Policies, and Social Perspectives of Environment. Papers were presented with the help of oral
and poster presentations. The sessions were chaired by various scientists and professionals from
their respective fields such as Dr. Anupam Joshi, Dr. Sanjay K. Chadha, Dr. Rajesh Nair
and Prof. Saudamini Das. They also delivered lectures in their particular sessions speaking
about health, education and environmental policies in constitution, cultural and social aspects as
well as conservation prospects. In the valedictory session Dr. Sheetal Kapoor delivered a speech
on social perspective of environment. Prizes and certificates were distributed among participants
of the respective sessions. The best paper was also awarded in the different themes.

North East Student’s Welfare Committee (NSEWC)
The North East Student’s Welfare Committee (NESWC), Rajdhani College, organised a two-
nights-three-days tour to Jaipur and Pushkar between 22 March 2019 and 24 March 2019. In
Jaipur, we visited historically significant places like Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal, City Palace, Amer
Fort, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort, and Jaigarh Fort. The panoramic views of the Jaipur city,
the scene of the receding wall of the fort, and discussions evoked by the sight of Jaivana cannon
constituted some exciting moments. Interestingly, students showed immense interest in the
elaborate textiles and attires showcased in the City Palace and the architecture of the monuments.
On the second day of the trip we left for Pushkar. Pushkar is a town bordering the Thar desert.
We explored the local market where we came across exquisite metal handicrafts, Rajasthani
jewellery, Rajasthani attires with embellishments and intricate embroidery and camel leather
products. We even had the opportunity to experience the local cuisine comprising of dal, bhati,
and churma. It certainly was a unique experience for everyone's taste buds. In the morning of the
third day we visited one of the most prominent pilgrimage site that is the Jagatpita Brahma
Mandir. To everyone’s regret, photography was prohibited in the area. The temple dates back to
14th century, partly rebuilt later. The temple has distinct red pinnacle (shikhar) and bird motif.
The sanctum sanctorum houses the four-headed lord Brahma, the creator and his consort Gayatri
(goddess of milk). After seeking blessings, we headed to the Gau Ghat where people take dip in
its holy water to cleanse their body, mind and soul. After visiting the holy sites, we enjoyed a
thrilling camel safari through the sand dunes. We were left mesmerised by the beautiful
mountains, Aravalli hills and semi-desert landscape. In short, the students were introduced to
new dressings, language, food habits, architecture – a different culture and new ways of life. The
experiences will help them understand and appreciate the variety of Indian cultures more
meaningfully.
With the aim at orientating the students towards academic engagement with socio-political
issues, the NESWC organised a Panel Discussion on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, on 11
March 2019. Panellists included Prof. Amarjeet Singh, CNESPR, Jamia Millia Islamia, Dr. Saroj
Giri, Department of Political Science, University of Delhi and A.C. Kharingpam, Department of
English, Jamia Millia Islamia. Prof. Singh grounded the vehement resistance against the Bill in
the northeast on the history of immigration of the region. Dr. Giri drew attention to the important
of examining the Bill along with National Register of Citizens (NCR) and Sixth Schedule
provided in the Constitution for the hill tribes in the region. He also insisted on the importance of
creating a language to adequately describe the issue in particular and northeast experience in
general. Mr. Kharingpam problematized the issue by looking it from an ethical point of view and
he also examined the implications of the Bill on the hill tribes. The most satisfying and
impressive aspect of the Discussion is the interactive participation of the students. Besides
raising critical questions, they showed concern for the problem of immigration that the world
overall is facing. The Panel Discussion was held at the Seminar Hall and it was attended by 36
students and more than 10 teachers from different faculties. The college principal Dr. Rajesh Giri
opened the Discussion with an insightful brief introduction.
The NESWC organised an Orientation Programme on 13 Aug 2018. The highlight of the
Programme was the warm and encouraging words from Dr. Rajesh Giri, Principal Rajdhani
College. In the speech, Dr. Giri urged the students to participate in the various activities of
college functions and societies. He opened his door to the students for any suggestions to
improve the well-being of the students and even complaints to redress their grievances. After the
speech, the Principal gave away a small gift to each of the fresher. It was followed by words of
encouragement from the members of the Committee such as Dr. Sarangthem S. Singh, Dr.
Manisha Singhal and Dr. Sushi Kumar Azad. Dr. Azad identified language problem as a primary
hurdle towards fraternization and socialization of the Northeast students with others. Therefore,
he strongly advised the students to learn Hindi and went to the extent of offering free Hindi
lessons to the students. Dr. Singhal suggested that the college should arrange a trip to some
places or around Delhi so that students would have a sense of their place in Delhi. Dr.
Sarangthem gave a morale-boosting exhortation. The Students Executive Body took the
responsibility of arranging the programme.

Women Development Cell
The Women Development Cell (WDC) of Rajdhani College has been active to promote gender
equality and contribute towards the gender sensitisation of the campus. The Cell has adopted
multi-dimensional approaches to sensitise on gender issues among students, faculties and non-
teaching staffs by organising Seminars, Workshops, Symposiums, Interactive Sessions, Lectures,
Poster Making Competitions, Debate Competitions, Essay Writing Competitions, and Self-
Defence Trainings etc. It has also taken initiatives to do counselling of those students who suffer
from gender biasness at various occasions and platforms from time to time. The Women
Development Cell (WDC) has been very active throughout the current session to meet above
objectives led by Dr.Anita with the support of Dr.Sapna Chamadia, Dr.Rachna Sethi, Dr.Rajni
Grover, Dr. Piyali Sen Ghosh, Ms. Sasmita Mohanty, Dr.Arti Rastogi and Dr.Pallavi Choudhary.
During the academic session 2018-19, the Cell organised innumerous events.
At the beginning of the session, Women Development Cell had organised the inaugural lecture
on 26th September 2019 at the College. The distinguished speakers of the programme were Dr.
Kiran Walia (Former Education Minister, Government of National Capital Territory
(NCT)) of Delhi), and Ms. Jagmati Sangwan (Social Activist). The programme inaugurated
with the lamp lighting ceremony by the Principal of the College Dr.Rajesh Giri, Convenor of
WDC Dr.Anita, Dr.Sapna Chamadia, Dr.Gayatri Bhagwat Sahu, Dr.Rachna Sethi and other
WDC members along with the Guest Speakers. While discussing the theme of the Lecture,
Dr.Sapna Chamadia gave a brief idea about the purpose of organising the lecture on “Women
and Politics”. She mentioned that it is being witnessed in politics; the women have given
subordinate position compared to their male counterparts. They are always denied of active
participation in politics which is not only witnessed in India but also across the globe. Though
the women have not been given equal opportunity however politics is happening around gender
issues in the name of ‘women empowerment’. To address gender issues in politics, landmark
decisions and laws are being made at the political realm where there is under representation of
women. This is one of the important reasons for inviting the two important women personalities
who made a mark in politics through continuous struggle and still facing challenges. She
reiterated this fact that only the active participation of women in decision making process can
bring change in the society. Then we can say in real sense ‘politics of women not politics for
women’. With this note, she gave a brief introduction of both the speakers.
The Principal, Dr. Rajesh Giri, while congratulating the Convenor for inviting the speakers
from diverse fields discussed about the importance of women participation in politics and how
women are showing courage to overcome the challenges at the political institutions. Dr.Kiran
Walia shed light on the adverse impact of the current situation in politics drastically reduced the
role of women. She also shared her personal experiences of facing derogatory remarks while
campaigning for election as a women candidate and even after that. She said even today women
cannot visit some places of Delhi and Haryana states for their political activism. Ms. Jagmati
Sangwan, a social activist known for her honesty, bravery and commitment for women cause,
emphasised that the real politics on women issues starts by denying women to access public
space, educational institutions, basic requirements in life etc. Amidst these experiences it may
not be possible to witness active participation of women in politics. While discussing her
experience in Haryana, she said for each small issues we women are compelled to go for protest
and dharna like; digging of tube well, establishing school for girl students etc. The prevailing
perception of the society indicates that the women should remain invisible at the public sphere.
She encountered with myriad criticism for being visible in the public sphere by raising critical
women issues. The Pradhans are playing dominant role at the State level for instance in Haryana.
They issue dictates for women bypassing the constitutionally constituted Gram Panchayats. They
consider themselves real thekedars of the society born to dictate women and no one can raise
voice against them. Overwhelming participation of students witnessed at this occasion and many
questions and queries raised by the faculties and students in and around these issues. The
speakers responded patiently to each and every question and interacted with the students. The
programme ended with the vote of thanks by the Convenor Dr.Anita.
The five day Workshop on Self-Defence organised by the WDC with the collaboration of Delhi
Police at the Sports Complex of the College. Around sixty girl students participated in this event.
They learned various techniques like; elbow attack, palm attack, finger attack and various
defence techniques. The trainers also discussed in detail how to use these techniques for self-
defence with examples of their personal experiences in life. Through this training, the students
learned how to live a healthy and disciplined life. It also proved as an imperative to increase self-
confidence among these girls. The students were instructed how to use “Himmat App”
introduced by the Delhi Police for the protection of women. The Principal of the College
Dr.Rajesh Giri appreciated the Delhi Police for taking such initiatives and making girls self-
dependant and secure at public space. At the end of the training, the Convenor Dr.Anita thanked
the Delhi Police trainers Ms.Suman, Ms.Kanchan and Ms.Nisha along with the volunteers Suraj,
Neha, Suraj Singh, Rupesh and Amrita etc.
International Women’s Day is a remarkable day in the life of not only women but also it is a
remarkable day for the entire humanity. It is a day to celebrate motherhood, to celebrate the
achieved rights of women, live a life of dignity after long struggle, celebrate, cherish and give
tribute to the women around the world who contributed and sacrificed their life for the cause of
women and gender equality. Women Development Cell of Rajdhani College organized Poster
Making and Debate Competitions to celebrate International Women’s Day. Dr. Arti Rastogi
gave a brief historical account of the International Women’s Day. The historical origins of the
day date back to 1907 and gradually the day went on to signify the struggle for equal role for
women in social, economic and political spheres. Dr. Rajni Grover & Ms Sasmita Mohanty also
pointed how "gender equality” is central to the entire idea of celebrating international women's
day across the globe.Dr Rajesh Giri Principal of Rajdhani College while congratulating the
WDC for organizing this programme emphasized on the need and importance of positive gender
experiences of gender relations in the world. Dr. Madhu Verma recited a poem on this
occasion, which beautifully gave the message of this day. Other Faculty members including
Dr.Marisha Singhal, Shri Jais Raj Yadav, Dr. Renu Gambhir, Dr. Pallavi Chaudhary and
Dr.Piyali sen Ghosh also participated in the programme. Faculty members pointed that the
objective of WDC is to make the students able to realize the importance of gender equality for
the development of society. Students enthusiastically participated in both poster making and

Yoga and Meditation Committee
Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom; this calmness is achieved through
meditation. A calm mind is the most helpful instrument in overcoming the stress, pressure &
challenges of daily life. A regular and sincere practice of meditation on daily basis is beneficial
for a healthy and balanced life. Yoga practices have proven quite helpful in developing a
wholesome personality. Keeping these factors in view, an initiative was taken by the Department
of Sanskrit to hold weekly sessions of meditation for one hour on every Friday at 4 p.m. in the
Seminar Room of the college. These guided sessions were held under the supervision of Dr.
Savita Nigam and Dr. Sachin Kumar of the Department of Sanskrit. Students were taught guided
meditation in group. The meditation included pranayam, tratak for concentration, yoga nidra and
shavasana for relaxation and stress free life. This noble endeavour saw participation in large
numbers from faculty as well as the student community.

Yuva: The Social Welfare and Youth Development Society
युवा The Social Welfare and Youth Development Society of Rajdhani College held its first
annual event इनायत on 12 March 2019. The event was named इनायत as it stands for blessing
and we believe every creature is a blessing to the world be it humans, animals, or plants. इनायत
consisted of a day full of events.
A ‘Pet Adoption Campʼ in association with Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre was organized.
The program took place in the college garden where the puppies were kept. A large number of
people came to take a look and play with the puppies. No one could resist the temptation of
clicking a picture with those adorable faces. Throughout the event the area was crowded with
students as well as teachers who were awed to see these little puppies playing, eating and even
sleeping. The volunteers took down names of the people interested to adopt a dog and briefed
them about the procedures. At the end of the day two students of our college adopted two of the
puppies and took them home. The camp served an important purpose of making people aware
about how adoption is better than buying a bred dog.
Youth of the world is so absorbed in being physically fit and looking perfect all the time that
they tend to ignore the mental aspect of their health. Keeping the same in mind, युवा in its first
fest इनायत organized a mental illness awareness session. The session was led by Mr. Manu
Singh who is a social activist, spiritual trainer and interfaith practitioner with more than a decade
of experience of working on issues of human rights, animal rights, peace-building and
sustainability. The session started with the intent to define addiction of all kinds. He explained
that addiction is not only of drugs and other intoxicating substances but also of cell phone,
games, overthinking, and addiction of all kinds is harmful for anybody’s mental health. Light
was also thrown on how today's youth have expertise in overthinking, unintentionally we over
think for about at least two hours a day. He defined 3 Ds which are Doubt, Debate and Dissent; if
there's a doubt, there should be a debate and dissent if you don't agree.
Following this engrossing session, a 5 min meditation session was held. Teachers as well as
students were a part of the session which turned out to be very refreshing. In the end, Mr Singh
highlighted how meditation is important to control thoughts and overthinking; and it should br
turned into a habit.
Bujho to Jane a quiz was organised by the society. The quiz took place in the Amphitheatre
area, and it was planned in such a way that it didn’t just test the intellect of an individual but also
their awareness to social causes. The quiz consists of three rounds, round 1 Kon Bola, round 2
Word!, round 3 Picture Description, respectively. The quiz witnessed a huge turnout of students.
A treasure hunt competition तलाश was held in the New Block area which which drew in huge
participation of teams with vim and zest. The event consisted of three basic rounds. There was
neck to neck competition between the five finalist teams but a group of four boys from Rajdhani
College itself emerged as the winner, whereas a team of girls from Bharti College bagged the
runner up position.
मेरे गली में, an ultimate rap competition was organized outside the canteen area of the college
which gave all the students a chance to showcase their talent in front of an audience. The
participants rapped about so many social issues and recent incidents in the country. Not just the
participants but the audience also took part. The event not just created a buzz in the college about
social welfare but also increased the popularity of rappers at initial level. Students from SOL and
other college bagged the positions.
पोषण is an initiative started by the युवा society of Rajdhani College. In February, worn out jeans
were collected and later turned into denim pouches in collaboration with a local boutique. On the
day of the fest, a stall was set up where we sold all the 50 pouches that were stitched. The profit
from the sale of the pouches was used to buy milk for homeless children who struggle to survive.
Milk for them is not a necessity but a luxury.
इनायत ended with zest and gratification with the prize distribution ceremony. The prize
distribution ceremony was held at the college Auditorium.

किन्दगी है यह इनायत।”
