Both of these fur babies were rescues. Well, they found us!

Lilly is our precious, all white, little girl!, weighing in at

about 8 pounds She is six and half years old. She came

into our lives on July 15th, 2015 by way of a neighbor who

found her in her backyard with several puncture wounds

from some animal and scrapes on her tiny face from trying

to get through a fence.

Then George came along. Our blue-eyed, red, and white

handsome boy appeared on our doorstep while we were

on vacation in October 2018. Our cat sitter said she had to

feed him because he was so small. Two days later he was

all ours at a whopping 4 1/2 pounds. He grew fast and now

weighs almost 16 pounds of pure love and energy.

If only they would love each other as much as we love

them.

APRILNATIONAL FACT DAYS

GOOD FRIDAY02

22NATIONAL EARTH DAYAPRIL FOOL'S DAY

Because there was no EPA, no Clean Air

Act, no Clean Water Act. There were no

legal or regulatory mechanisms to

protect our environment. In spring 1970,

Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth

Day as a way to force this issue onto the

national agenda.

01Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day

dates back to 1582 when France switched from

the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar.

as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In

the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar,

the new year began with the spring equinox

around April 1.

People who were slow to get the news or

failed to recognize that the start of the new

year had moved to January 1 and continued to

celebrate it during the last week of March

through April 1 became the butt of jokes and

hoaxes and were called “April fools.”On the last Sunday in April, National Pet

Parents Day recognizes the pet parents

who go the extra mile to care for their

fur babies.

There is a very special connection, a

unique bond, between a pet and its

owner. This unique relationship, which

can often last for many years, is often a

vital part of the ‘pet parents’ life. Their

loved pets are considered to be a

member of the family.

25NATIONAL PET PARENTS DAY

According to food historians, many

cultures around the world have enjoyed

cooked bread and cheese since ancient

times. The United States modern version

of the grilled cheese sandwich

originated in the 1920s. As sliced bread

and American cheese became easily

available, Americans began making

open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches.

United States government cookbooks

describe Navy cooks broiling “American

cheese filling sandwiches” during World

War II.

Good Friday marks the day Jesus was crucified.

According to the Bible, on the evening of

Maundy Thursday, Jesus told his disciples

during the Last Supper to expect his death.

Afterward, soldiers led by Judas Iscariot

arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

EASTER04Easter, also called Pascha (Aramaic, Greek,

Latin) or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian

festival and holiday commemorating the

resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described

in the New Testament as having occurred on

the third day after his burial following his

crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD.

The secular celebration of Easter is much

different. Most families honor the return of

spring with pastel-colored Easter eggs, a visit

from the Easter Bunny, Easter egg hunts, and

candy-filled baskets.

This custom of the Easter egg, according to

many sources, can be traced to early Christians

of Mesopotamia, and from there it spread into

Eastern Europe and Siberia through the

Orthodox Churches, and later into Europe

through the Catholic and Protestant Churches.

29NATIONAL GRILLEDCHEESE SANDWICH DAY

Tennis, ”Pop” style, was humming again on Saturday, March 20th, with 16 players battling it out on 4 courts. Poptennis, a derivative of normal tennis, is always played in a doubles format on a reduced-sized court, with paddlesand low compression balls. “Pop” is really catching on in the area at other gated communities and tennis clubs.

It is a game that keeps one’s reflexes and volleys sharp which translates to better play at the net in regulartennis. Our pro, Aldo Burga, once again supplied all paddles and other Pop supplies.

However, very importantly, we now have a supply of 8 paddles, baseline markers, and balls in our TalaveraClubhouse. These items can be checked out by any 4 or 8 Verano residents who want to play on their own. Justgo to the reception counter and return later the same day. But do remember that pop tennis can only be playedafter prime time regular tennis hours. In other words, not before 10:30 am.

Just more fun to be had on our beautiful tennis courts!

Ladies’ tennis is alive and well at PGA Verano. Come to the tennis courts any day of the week and youwill witness enthusiastic social tennis. There are currently many resident players, and you will usuallyfind 4 to 8 ladies playing every day of the week from 8:30 am -10:30 am.

New players of all levels are welcome. If you’re interested please call/text Pat Rizzolo @ 772-341-5526 orBelle Sussnow @ 954-913-8444.

For those that haven’t played in a while or for those who would like tennis lessons you can reach out toour professional instructor, Aldo Burga at 772-466-7888 or [email protected] He’s a great coachand you’ll love your lessons with him.See you on the courts!!!

The Semmering Railway, built over 41 km of high mountainsbetween 1848 and 1854, is one of the greatest feats of civil

engineering from this pioneering phase of railway building. The highstandard of the tunnels, viaducts, and other works has ensured the

continuous use of the line up to the present day. It runs through aspectacular mountain landscape and there are many fine buildings

designed for leisure activities along the way, built when the area wasopened up due to the advent of the railway.

QUEBRADA DE HUMAHUACAP R O V I N C E O F J U Y U Y , A R G E N T I N A

Quebrada de Humahuaca follows the line of a majorcultural route, the Camino Inca, along the spectacularvalley of the Rio Grande, from its source in the cold highdesert plateau of the High Andean lands to its confluencewith the Rio Leone some 150 km to the south. The valleyshows substantial evidence of its use as a major traderoute over the past 10,000 years. It features visibletraces of prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities, of theInca Empire (15th to 16th centuries), and of the fight forindependence in the 19th and 20th centuries.

A great concentration of ancestral Pueblo Indian dwellings, builtfrom the 6th to the 12th century, can be found on the Mesa Verdeplateau in south-west Colorado at an altitude of more than 2,600m. Some 4,400 sites have been recorded, including villages builton the Mesa top. There are also imposing cliff dwellings, built of

stone and comprising more than 100 rooms.

MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARKC O L O R A D O

Easter, which will be observed on April4, 2021, is the oldest and mostimportant Christian festival. Many adultscommemorate the holiday, whichcelebrates the resurrection of JesusChrist on the third day after hisCrucifixion, with prayers and fasting for40 days before the event. For childrenin the US, Easter is largely about funactivities like seeking out candy-filledeggs, meeting the Easter bunny, andparticipating in spring parades. However, not everyone celebrates thisall-important holiday with thesetraditions.

SwedenOn the Thursday before Easter,Swedish children dress up as witch-likecreatures called påskkärringars and godoor-to-door seeking treats in exchangefor handmade Easter cards anddrawings. The custom is credited tolocal folklore about witches heading tothe magical and evil Blåkulla island, offSweden's east coast, on the Thursdaybefore Easter, to plan tricks andreturning to the mainland on the holiday.Though it is unclear how the ancienttale led to this fun Easter tradition,Swedish kids are not complaining.

NorwayNorwegians celebrate the Easterholiday week, which begins on theFriday before Palm Sunday and endsthe Tuesday following Easter Monday, reading novels or watching shows thatfocus on crime. To keep up with theresidents' appetite for Easter crime, orPaaskekrim, publishers churn outseveral new thrillers, while televisionstations populate their daily scheduleswith crime dramas.

Dairy companies also get into the spiritby publishing illustrated crime stories ontheir milk cartons. The unusual ritual can be traced back toa 1923 advertisement for a new crimebook by Norwegian authors NordahlGrieg and Nils Lie. Called "Bergen trainlooted in the night," it was featured onthe local newspaper's front page a weekbefore Palm Sunday, giving readers theimpression that it was a regular newsarticle. The gimmick drove so manypeople to purchase the novel thatpublishers began to release severalcrime thrillers around the holiday. Soonafter, television producers joined in, anda fun tradition was born.

Haux, FranceIn the southern French town of Haux, residents and visitors gather in thetown's main square every EasterMonday to share a massive omelet.Cooked by members of the GiantOmelette Brotherhood of Bessières, itcomprises over 15,000 fresh eggs andis big enough to feed as many as10,000 people. According to the legend, while traveling through the region,Napoléon Bonaparte stopped at thesmall town for a meal. The FrenchEmperor enjoyed the omelet he orderedso much that he returned the followingday and asked the townspeople togather all their eggs and make one bigenough to feed his entire army. In 1973,some enterprising locals decided torecreate the event, and the deliciousholiday custom has continued eversince.

The treatment for knee pain will depend, to some

extent, on the cause of the problem. However, the

following simple remedies can help with many

forms of knee pain.

1. Physical activityExercise can delay the development of osteoarthritis

(OA), one of the most common causes of knee pain.

The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and

the Arthritis Foundation (AF) urge people to exercise

to manage OA of the knee. Walking, cycling,

swimming, tai chi, and yoga may all be beneficial.

Being physically active boosts the health of cartilage

tissue, whether a person has OA or not.

Exercise also strengthens the way the body supports

the joints. Strengthening the leg muscles is

especially beneficial for the knees.

People with joint pain can benefit from activities

such as water aerobics, as this puts little strain on

the knees.

Straighten and raise a leg while lying or sitting

down.

Place one foot up on a step, then the other,

stepping down again, and repeating the step-

ups.

Sit on a chair and then stand and sit repeatedly

for a minute. Do this in a slow, controlled way

and avoid using the hands to support you.

Hold a chair and squat until the kneecaps cover

the toes. Do this 10 times.

Avoiding low chairs and couches that you “sink”

into

2. Strengthening exercisesIndividuals can work with a physical therapist to

identify the best exercises and programs for their

needs.

Strengthening the upper leg muscles—the

quadriceps muscles—through exercise can help to

protect the knee joint. These muscles are at the sides

and front of the thighs.

Here are some ways to strengthen these muscles:

3. Posture and supportMeasures that can help to minimize knee strain

include:

Many short-term knee problems do not need

any help from doctors and people can often

help with their own recovery.

Home remedies can also help with many of

the long-term problems with knee pain.

painful without movement

drugs (NSAIDs)

topical capsaicin

4. Weight loss and dietPeople who have excess weight or obesity have a

higher risk of knee pain.

Carrying extra weight gives the joints more work to

do. Losing it helps to reduce long-term knee pain,

including pain caused by arthritis.

Extra weight on your body increases inflammation

throughout the body and the knees are affected.

Eating well helps with keeping weight off.

A healthful diet means a balanced one that is:

The Arthritis Foundation recommends a

Mediterranean-style diet that is rich in fresh produce.

Experts urge people with OA of the knee to lose

weight if they have overweight or obesity. A doctor

or dietitian can help decide how much weight a

person needs to lose. They can also help plan a

suitable diet.

5. MedicationsNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory and other

medications can help with knee pain caused by

arthritis. Some of these need to be given in a

doctor’s office, but some can be used at home,

either with or without a prescription.

Medications that may help manage pain include:

steroid injections into the joint

tramadol

Loosely closing the hands into fists, tap the

upper, lower, and middle thigh 10 times with

both hands. Repeat three times.

Sitting with the feet flat on the floor, place the

heel of the hand on the top of the thigh and

glide it as far as the knee, then release. Repeat

five times. Do the same for the outer and inner

sides of the thigh.

Press four fingers into the knee tissue and move

up and down five times. Repeat all around the

knee.

Place the palm of the hand on top of the thigh,

glide it down the thigh, over the knee, and back

up the outer thigh.

Acetaminophen and duloxetine, which is an

antidepressant, may help.

Experts do not recommend using opioids, except for

tramadol.

Some of these medications are available for

purchase over-the-counter or online, including the

NSAIDs ibuprofen and naproxen.

6. MassageMassage, including self-massage, may relieve knee

pain.

The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA)

recommends the following.

These should be done in a seated position with the

knees pointing forward and the feet flat on the floor.

1.

2.

3.

4.

Massaging the thigh muscles will have a beneficial

impact on the knee.

Current guidelines do not recommend

massage as a treatment for OA of the knee, as

there is not enough evidence to prove that it

helps reduce symptoms. However, massage

may offer other benefits, such as managing

stress.

7. Aromatherapy preparationsEssential oils may help reduce pain.

Heat relaxes muscles and improves lubrication,

leading to a reduction in stiffness. Use a hot

water bottle or a warm pad.

A study published in 2008 suggested that massaging

with an oil containing ginger and orange improved

pain and function in knees with moderate to severe

pain due to osteoarthritis.

In one investigation, researchers found that applying

an ointment containing cinnamon, ginger, mastic,

and sesame oil had a similar effect on pain, stiffness,

and motion as using salicylate ointment.

8. Protection, rest, ice, compression, and

elevation (PRICE)Rest, ice, compression, and elevation may help treat

mild knee pain that results from a soft tissue injury,

such as a sprain.

Protection refers to protecting the knee from further

injury, for example, by taking a break from the

activity that caused it.

Rest can reduce the risk of further injury and give

tissues time to heal. However, stopping all

movement is not advisable, as this can lead to

stiffness and, in time, muscle weakness.

Ice can help reduce swelling and inflammation. It

should be wrapped in a cloth and applied for 20

minutes several times on the first day of injury. Never

put ice directly on the skin, as this can lead to further

damage.

Compression with knee support, for example, can

increase comfort levels. The support or bandage

should be firm but not tight.

Elevation, or keeping the leg raised, will encourage

circulation and reduce swelling. Ideally, the knee

should be above the level of the heart.

9. Heat and coldHeat and cold can be effective trusted Source in

treating pain in the lower back, and it has been

recommended to ease joint pain that results from

arthritis.

Ice, wrapped in a cloth, can reduce pain,

inflammation, and swelling.

Some people may use heat to improve mobility in

the morning and reduce swelling later in the day.

Remember to test any hot item before applying it,

especially if it is for an older person or someone who

cannot communicate easily.

10. ClimateA colder climate is often thought to worsen the pain.

Study findings do not support this, although living in

a pleasant climate might make pain psychologically

easier. It may also provide easier opportunities to

achieve a more healthy lifestyle.

In 2014, researchers found that — rather than

weather itself — sensitivity to weather in older

people with osteoarthritis may affectTrusted Source

how they experience joint pain.

People from Southern Europe, women, and those

with higher anxiety levels were more likely to report

weather sensitivity, and those with higher levels of

sensitivity were more likely to report increased pain,

especially with damp or rainy and cold weather.

The results of the study did not support the

common belief that pain becomes worse in a colder

climate.

A 2017 study carried out in the United States

supported this view. Trusted Source Findings

showed no link between rainfall and increased

medical visits for joint pain.

11. Acupuncture

In 2017, a study involving 570 people found evidence

that acupuncture might help people trusted sources

with osteoarthritis in the knee.
