The Regional Institutes of Education at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore and Shillong have been functioning as Regional Resource Centres for School and Teacher Education and are striving for academic excellence, innovation, professional competence, commitment and the sharing of experiences and expertise to improve the quality of education in the country. While the RIEs at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Mysore cater to both the pre-service and in-service teacher education needs of the states, NERIE, Shillong caters to only the in-service education needs of the North Eastern states. The major academic functions of the RIEs are : Designing and implementing innovative pre-service teacher training programmes 22. B.Sc.Ed. course is on quality, i.e. producinggood teachers well-versed in content,process, pedagogy and co-curricularactivities. The one-year M.Ed. ElementaryEducation Course in teacher educationgives adequate emphasis on issues andconcerns in elementary education andresearch based inputs. The pupil-teachers

in the course conduct research studies indifferent priority areas of elementaryeducation. The two-year B.Ed.(Secondary)course in Science and Humanities is anexperimental course based on theguidelines of NCTE. The course-wiseenrolment and results are given in thefollowing tables :

Extension Lectures

Prof. Sibnath Sarma, Ex Dean ArtsFaculty, Guwahati University gave alecture on "Philosophy, Education andCulture" at the institute.

Internship Programmes

The programme was organised in twophases. Phase one was for Internship inteaching for B.Sc.,B.Ed. IVth year andB.Ed.(Sec.) second year students andphase two was for pre-internship inteaching for B.Ed.(Sec.) first yearstudents. The Internship in Teaching forB.Sc.,B.Ed. IVth year and B.Ed.(Sec.)second year was organised from 16thAugust 2005 to 1st October 2005in sixteen schools of Ajmer cityand nearby places preceded by HeadMasters Conference organised on11th August 2005. The Pre-Internshipprogramme for B.Ed. Ist year wasorganised from 22nd January 2006 to19th February 2006. One day conferenceof Head Masters/Principals and seniorteachers from cooperative schools wasorganised on 20th January 2006.

Working With Community : Trainingof pupil teachers of B.Ed. Secondary PartI on Field work with community wasorganised from 3-11 February 2006 inPushkar and Pisangan Panchayat Samitiof Ajmer district. The specific objectivesof the programme were to acquaint thepupil teachers with the factors of workingwith community and the real life problems

of the community, and to developmeaningful relationship betweeneducation and community, decentralisedmanagement system and skills relating tothe organisation of educationalprogrammes with the community. Theprogramme was organised in four villages,i.e. Chawandia, Tilora, Dungaria Khurdand Dungaria Kalan. In all 76 pupilteachers participated in the programme.The participatory approach was followedin the training programme and survey often households as per prescribedproforma of SSA was undertaken,members of School Development andManagement Committee (SDMC) wereinterviewed to understand problems andissues, contribution and achievements ofSDMC, study of self-help groups activatedfor women empowerment was done tounderstand organisational, motivationaland financial problems. Activitiesorganised by Kishori Manch, SavyamSahayata Samooh, Anganwai Centreswere also observed. Pupil teachers

organised cultural activities in the eveningin each village, such as Nukkar Natak,group dance, songs etc. to develop skillsto convey a message to community onvarious problems related to socio-economic and educational aspects of thecommunity.

Campus Selections : Four publicschools of the region visited the instituteand conducted campus interviews for thestudents of B.Sc., B.Ed. IVth year andB.Ed. IInd year. About 16 students wereselected for different posts by the schools.

XXI RIE-NCERT Staff Sports Meet : RIEAjmer staff team comprising 21 men andtwo women members, participated in theXXI NCERT sports meet held at RIE,Mysore from 12 to 16 December 2005.RIE, Ajmer won the badmintonchampionship both in singles anddoubles; and were runners-up in cricketand football.

NCC : Under the NCC programme severalactivities were conducted including

training camp for girls. Forty boys andthirty girls are cadets of the NCC. CadetKm. Raj Divedi was group commanderof Rajasthan contingent in the RepublicDay parade 2006 at Raj Path, New Delhi.Also Km. Ranjeeta Dwivedi was selectedfor youth exchange programme to be heldin Canada for three months.

Prof. H. C. Jain, Principal (from1 December 2005) participated in theInternational Conference in Physics heldat Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi from21-26 August 2005 and presented apaper on "Students' Contemplationsabout the Physical Quantities". Hepublished two papers : one on "Scientistsand Scientific Methods" and the other on"Students' Ideas about Working ofElectrical Components" in School Science.

Prof. K. M. Gupta contributed a paperon "Inequality, Violence and Peace" at theInternational Conference on Sixty Years

Sports Meet at RIE, Ajmer

Exhibition: An exhibition on"Representing Indian women 1875-1947"was organised from 20-23 February 2006in collaboration with the Centre forWomen Development Studies, New Delhi.The exhibition included exhibits of Indianwomen who have excelled in differentareas in the country.

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS OF THERIE FACULTY

Prof. A. B. Saxena worked as Principal,RIE, Ajmer upto 30 November 2005 andthereafter as Professor in PSSCIVE,

Bhopal. During this period he published"Understanding Relativity UsingMinkowshi Diagram" in School Science,Vol. LXIII No. 3, September 2005. He alsocontributed to Evaluation of EnvironmentEducation in Schools' for an EnvironmentEducation Manual for teachers inRajasthan, and a lesson on EnvironmentalEducation for Bhoj Open University.

after World War II : Lesson for PeaceBuilding, APPRA and Jaipur PeaceFoundation. He coordinated theprogramme of development of syllabi ofM.Ed. and B.Ed. of MDS University, Ajmer.He participated in the interaction meetingfor review of pre-service and in-servicecourses of RIEs and a treatise on policyperspectives on Education of ScheduledCastes in India. He guided research,organised activities of Peace Club in theInstitute, and acted as a member of thefocus group on Peace Education.

Prof. K. B. Rath worked as coordinatorof Post Graduate Diploma in Guidanceand Counselling course. One student hasbeen awarded Ph.D under his guidance.He provided training to First Yearstudents of two-year B.Ed. course ondeveloping teaching competence andcommitment. He was involved in planningfor automation of the Institute, andconsultancy was provided to an NGO oninclusive education.

Prof. M.M. Pandey conducted tworesearch studies : one on "Measures of stressfree examination and their impact on ClassIX students" and the other on "Usefulnessof training courses/materials for SC/STpersonnel and utilisation of their servicesby the respective states". He coordinatedtraining programmes on capacity buildingof DIETs and SCERTs and activity-basedteaching and joyful learning of Mathematicsat the primary level.

Shri R.S. Kothari, Reader guided thestudents in preparation of innovativeteaching aids.

Dr. S.K. Pranami, Reader conducted aprogramme on "Teaching of English" forthe teachers of the northern region. Healso worked as convener of CoursesCommittee in English of the Board ofSecondary Education, Rajasthan andedited the Course Reader for Class X as ateam leader.

Dr. Rajesh Mishra, Reader worked asa State Coordinator for Uttar Pradesh. Hewas involved in the writing of the textbookof Urdu for Class IV.

Dr. Animesh Mohapatra, Readerconducted an ERIC research project on"Study of students understanding of aMajor Environmental Issue : GlobalWarming". He coordinated three trainingprogrammes. He published three paperson "Effect of Thiotepa on the CephalicNeurosecretory Cells of Adult Philosamiaricini Hut"t. (Lepidoptera : Saturnidae).Indian Journal of Environmental Science9(1): 39-45, 2005; "Studies on theRetrocerebral Glands of Mature Larva ofPhilosamia Ricini (L)" Flora and Fauna,11(2) : 136-140, 2005 and "Self improve-ment : key for an effective science teacher"Edutracks, 5(2), 6 November 2005. Hewrote a book on Environmental Studies.(Panchshila Publisher, 2005.) He isinvolved in the preparation of Teachers'Handbook in Science at Upper PrimaryLevel -NCERT 2005-06.

Dr. I.B. Chugtai, Reader guided oneM.Ed. dissertation. He conducted onePAC programme on Inclusive Educationand developed instructional material. Heprovided consultancy to the states ofRajasthan and Haryana in InclusiveEducation. He contributed to theRefresher courses organised by theinstitute for PGTs in Biology and Physicsof NVS and KVS.

Dr. V.P. Agarwal, Reader worked as amember of the committee to review the pre-service and in-service programmes beingcurrently organised at four RIEs. Heguided M.Ed. and Ph.D. scholars. He isthe co-ordinator of SSA cell of the Instituteand organised a regional meeting onQuality Elementary Education under SSAat RIE, Ajmer from 20-21 March 2006. Healso organised a conference of Principalsand Headmasters of Cooperative schools

for Internship Programme and conductedComprehensive Training Programme onEvaluation at SCERT, Solan.

Dr. S.S. Pandey, Reader guided andsupervised Ph.D. thesis on "A Study ofGeomatrical Competencies among Primaryschool Children". He guided M.Ed.dissertations, organised programmesentitled "Development of Modules andTraining in Action Research on Scienceand Mathematics at Primary level" and"Training of SC/ST KRPs in the contentcum methodology of teachingEnvironmental Studies at Primary Level"and "Capacity Building of Functionariesin Environmental Education and DisasterManagement including mitigation.”

Dr. R.K.S. Arora, Reader organisedprogrammes on Adolescence Education,Environment Education and Evaluationfor Teacher Educators. He presented apaper on "Drought in Western Rajasthan"in the International Conference held atChennai in July 2005. He also attendedone-day conference on “Recent Trends inPopulation Growth in India” organisedby MDS University, Ajmer in March 2006.

Dr. Nagendra Singh, Reader guided andsupervised four Ph.D. theses. He guidedM.Ed. dissertations. He contributed to thedevelopment of training modules forSDMCs under SSA and was activelyinvolved in other SSA work. He conductedthe training of pupil teachers of First YearB.Ed.(Sec.) students on field work withcommunity. He provided consultancy tovoluntary organisations working in thearea of NFE/AE in Rajasthan andpublished an article on "Role of TeacherOrganisations in Promoting SSA", inProgress of Education, Vol. IV No. 8 Pune.

Dr. S.K. Paradkar, Reader acted asIncharge Computer Cell. He conducted aprogramme on the teaching of Physics at+2 level. He attended a trainingprogramme on "ICT Pedagogy Interaction"

conducted by UNESCO, Bangkok andNAC, Bangalore. He worked as one of theteam members in the preparation ofTeachers' Handbook for Science at UpperPrimary level. He also coordinated aRefresher course for PGT Teachers ofPhysics of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

Dr. Ajay Singh Ruhal, Reader guidedand supervised Ph.D. theses. He attendedthe national level workshop in PhysicalEducation on Nomenclature, Norms,Standard and Curriculum for Teachers'Training Institutions of PhysicalEducation in India.

Dr. Sukhvir Singh, Reader conducted aprogramme on improvement of contentcompetence in Chemistry at SeniorSecondary level based on New Textbooks.He prepared a training package andimparted training to the participants. Healso acted as one of the members of theWriting Team in the development ofNCERTs New Textbook of Science for ClassIX and Textbook of Chemistry for Class XI.

Dr. K. C. Sharma, Reader is coordinatingthe preparation of Teachers' Handbook inScience and Technology at upper primarylevel. He published a paper on "Influenceof students' pre concept on learning theconcept of force" in Physics Education.

Dr. Ram Niwas, Senior Lecturerparticipated in a seminar on SSA andworked as resource person in aprogramme on Hindi at the Secondarylevel for the tribal regions. He alsoparticipated at RIE, Mysore for thepreparation of general guidelines forwriting Hindi Teaching Handbook.

Dr. A. R. Agarwal, Senior Lecturerconducted one PAC programme on the"Establishment of MathematicsLaboratory at Secondary Level" for theteachers of the northern region. He alsoworked as State Co-ordinator for threestates viz. Punjab, Haryana and UnionTerritory of Chandigarh.

Dr. S. V. Sharma, Lecturer coordinateda programme on "Development ofTeaching-Learning Material (TLM) andactivity-based teaching of science atelementary level" for teacher educators.He conducted a research project"Understanding the Concept of FrictionalForce at Different Levels". He published apaper on "Superconductivity and itsApplications", School Science Vol. XLIII,No.1, p.14-29 (January 2005) andanother on "Influence of Students,Pre-concept on Learning the Concept ofForce", Physics Education Vol. 22, No.3,p.179-189 (October-December 2005).He worked as a team member of SSA.

Dr. Til Prasad Sarma, Lecturercoordinated the programmes on "Teachingof Mathematics at Secondary Level" andon "Improvement of Content Competencein Mathematics at Senior Secondary Level"based on the New Textbooks. He publisheda paper on "Lie Technique in Restrictedthree Body Problem", Ganita Sandesh,Vol.19, 2005, 63-78.

Dr. V. Rani Prameela, Lecturercontributed as a resource person in theprogramme on Adolescence Education,Environment Education and Evaluationfor teacher educators.

Dr. A. Goswami, Lecturer guided oneM.Ed. dissertation. He worked in the areaof Value Education and delivered lectureson it in various orientation courses. Hepublished a paper in co-authorship on"Yoga Va Dhyan Dwara Atmanubhuti-Shaikshik Avashayakta" in BhartiyaAdhunik Shiksha (Jan.2005), NCERT.

Shri Albert Horo, Lecturer conducted aprogramme on the preparation ofTeaching-Learning Materials at secondarylevel. He supervised the regular NSSactivities organised throughout the yearincluding a ten-day camp on the theme"Youth for Health". He also organised aseven-day Basic Training in First Aid for

Dr. V. C. Gupta A.F.A. worked as a statecoordinator for J & K, Rajasthan andDelhi. He coordinated interaction meetingof the northern region, all Indiacompetition on innovative practices andexperiments for school teachers and theexhibition on "Representing Indian Women1875-1947". He worked as a member ofthe SSA team. He organised an approvedprogramme "How to organise quiz at +2level" and worked as a resource person forSocial Studies programme.

Innovative Steps : Identification of weakand slow learners and truants was doneand remedial steps are being taken suchas meticulous correction work andremedial classes for improving academicachievements of the students. Internship Programmes

Teacher preparation is a complexprocess. It aims at the developmentof proper knowledge skills ofteaching-learning process and rightattitudes among the teachertrainees; theory of teaching learntduring the course is put to practiceduring Internship. It is duringinternship that proper skills andattitudes are internalised by pupilteachers. To share the understandingregarding internship with the Principalsof Cooperating Schools, Working GroupMeeting of Principals was organisedon 10th and 11th August 2005. A totalof 226 Internees of B.Ed.II year,B.Sc.B.Ed. IV year and B.Ed. I year wereplaced in 18 different schools of Bhopal,Nagpur and Ahmedabad. Before sendingpupil-teachers to different schools,pre-placement orientation for B.Ed. II yearand B.Sc.B.Ed.-IV year was organised for

a week during August 2005, whereinpupil-teachers practise core-skills ofteaching in simulated conditions.Core-training for B.Ed.I year was alsoorganised from 8 August to 12 August2005. After the completion of Internship,Viva-Voce and Post-Internship Meetingwas organised on 29-30 December 2005.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) : RIE,Bhopal has been assigned theresponsibility to help MHRD, Governmentof India for the implementation of SSA inthe western region of the country. TheInstitute is actively involved inimplementation, monitoring andsupervision of SSA. A team consisting oftwo members : Prof. O.N. Awasthi andDr. Sharad Kumar took up the work ofsupervision and monitoring. The teamregularly visits the State once in everythree months and the reports of thesevisits are sent to MHRD, Government ofIndia for further necessary action.

Working with Community : Pre-serviceteacher trainees were divided into subgroups and asked to developquestionnaires in the domain of social,

economic and educational aspects whichwere subsequently administered tosurrounding village communities. Thedata were arranged and synthesised. Thestudents were graded on the basis ofcomprehensive reports based on the data.

Collaboration with States and otheragencies : The institute has collaboratedwith SCERTs/SIEs of Madhya Pradesh,Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat andGoa in many academic programmes. Inparticular the institute provided technicalsupport and expertise in a series ofworkshops of book writing, developmentof teacher training modules and otherteaching-learning materials and teachertraining at regional and national levels.

Sports Activities• The 42nd Annual Sports Meet was

organised from 31 January to1 February 2006. The athletic meetbegan with a march past by thestudents. More than 30 track andfield events were held. Gandhi Housesecured the first position followed byNehru House and Patel House inthat order.

• Shri Uma Shankar Das was declaredthe champion among male athletes andKu. Karuna Vishwakarma was declaredchampion among female athletes.

Campus InterviewsThe Campus Placement Cell of the Instituteorganised an interview for students ofB.Sc.B.Ed. IV–year and B.Ed. II yearclasses for jobs of TGT/PGT in schools. Sixschools participated in the process. Twelvestudents were offered jobs.

Major Contributions of the Faculty

Prof. M. Sen Gupta, Principal guidedresearch at the institute. He wasnominated as Member of the TeacherEducation Resource Group of NCTE andalso worked on the Executive Board ofNIOS. His article on "Uttar Audyogic kiShaikshik Chunountian" was publishedin Shikhar Varta, 2005.

Prof. V.J. Jadhao worked as a resourceperson in teacher training programmesrelated to teaching of science organisedby the institute for the state of MadhyaPradesh. He provided consultations to theRajya Shiksha Kendra, Bhopal for

development of textbooks ofenvironmental science and science at theelementary level.

Prof. I.P. Aggarwal conducted aworkshop-cum-training programme ofKRPs for innovative practices in teachingof Chemistry at the higher secondary stagefor the states of Maharashtra and Goa.

Prof. O.N. Awasthi conducted adevelopment-cum-training workshop forKRPs in innovative practices in teachingof Physics at the higher secondary levelfor quality assessment of D.Ed. colleges.

Prof. Subramanyam published underco-authorship a paper entitled,"Relationship between Self Concept,Achievement and Motivation inMathematics : A Gender Comparison", inEdutracks.

Dr. Mandal Jaydip, Reader conducted adevelopment-cum-training workshop forKRPs in innovative practices in teachingBiology at the higher secondary level.

He has completed ERIC Projecton "Pre-service teachers education foremerging diverse educational context :perspectives, practices and prospects.” Hepresented a paper in a conferenceorganised by the Indo-US Science Forumon utilisation of space based resources todevelop science education. He also guidedfour research scholars for Ph.D. inEducation and one was awarded andothers are in the process.

Dr. V.K. Kakaria, Reader contributed indevelopment of Biology textbook for ClassXII of NCERT. He also contributed in thepreparation of Teachers' resource materialin Science at elementary level (ClassesVI–VIII). He conducted a development-cum-training workshop for KRPs ofMaharashtra and Goa on innovativepractices in teaching of Biology at highersecondary level. A regional level sharing meeting onquality of elementary education wasorganised during 27-28 March 2006. Database ofElementary Education and Teacher

Educators in the Eastern region has beendeveloped and maintained by theInstitute.

Capacity Building of StateFunctionaries in EnvironmentalEducation and Disaster Managementand Mitigation (DMM) : A trainingprogramme on Environmental Educationand Disaster Management and Mitigation(DMM) was organised from 20 to 24March 2006. A large number ofeducational functionaries includingteacher educators from SCERTs/ DIETs/State Boards of Education/KVs/JNVsparticipated in the programme.

Refresher Course : The Instituteorganised a 21-day refresher course inEducation from 10 January 2006 forLecturers and Sr. Lecturers on a requestfrom the Academic Staff College, UtkalUniversity. This programme was fullyfunded by the Academic Staff College,Utkal University.

Collaboration with States : TheInstitute coordinated and evaluated thescheme of improvement of scienceeducation at the regional level. TheInstitute also conducted trainingworkshops for teacher educators andprovided academic support in theproduction of resource materials and inthe monitoring of the NPEP and findingits impact.

Internship : The Pre-internshipConference for B.Sc.B.Ed. Part IV studentswas held during 15-16 December 2005.Teachers and Heads of ten cooperatingschools from Bhubaneswar were briefedabout their roles and duties during theInternship programme. Apart from this,there were panel discussions onOur Approach to Lesson Planning, andStudent Teaching Profile andDemonstration Lessons in variousmethod subjects. The schools selectedfrom Bhubaneswar included CentralSchools, privates schools and publicschools which follow the CBSE

curriculum. The Internship-in-TeachingProgramme was held from 4 January to3 February 2006 during which thestudent teachers were exposed to schoolbased experiences including classroomteaching, managing arrangement classes,library and laboratory and organisingco-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Students of B.Ed. Part II, both Artsand Science were deputed to six schoolsat Bhawanipatna and Chaibasa in twogroups. There were 49 students placedat Bhawanipatna, Orissa where threeschools viz, Kendriya Vidyalaya,Bhawanipatna, Government High School,Pastikuda and Panchayat High School,Medinipur representing an urban school,a tribal school and a rural schoolrespectively had been taken for thepurpose of multicultural placementtraining. Each student experienced theteaching-learning environment, whichvaried over three types of schools, bytaking part in all kinds of school activitiesby spending 4 to 5 days in each categoryof schools. Similarly 51 students wereplaced at Chaibasa, Jharkhand. Theschools taken were Government Girl'sHigh Schools representing a rural school,S.P.G.Mission High School representinga tribal school and S.J.D.A.V. PublicSchool representing an urban school.

Two months Internship-in-TeachingProgramme for B.Ed. Part II students washeld in two centres viz. Sambalpur inOrissa and Ranchi in Jharkhand duringJuly - August 2005. The student teacherswere exposed to various school basedexperiences. Apart from teaching andconduct of co-curricular activities,student teachers carried out actionresearch and prepared records on SchoolProcesses and Teaching-learning aids. Onthe day of post-internship conference, anexhibition of teaching aids developed bystudents was organised in the morningsession and the afternoon session wasdevoted to presentation of group reportsby students and feedback from theInstitute supervisors.

Working with the Community : Workingwith the community is an integral part ofthe two-year B.Ed. course. The studentsof the two-year programme were taken tothe village Punanga in Jagatsinghpurdistrict of Orissa state where a seven-daycamp was organised during 5 to 11February 2006. In all 43 girls and 38boys participated in the week long camp.Besides the academic activities like surveyon health and hygiene of the communityand study of the status of primaryeducation in the locality, the studentsparticipated in various activities likeShramdan, Prabhat Pheri, communityinteractions and cultural programmes.The community people also participatedin all these activities. The field exposuregave a great opportunity to thepupil-teachers for learning by doingthemselves. On return from the camp, thestudent community organised a blooddonation camp in the Institute in whichas many as 180 students and facultymembers donated blood to the Red Cross.Besides others, the field work helped thepupil-teachers to link their classroomknowledge with outside experiences. It ishoped that the working with thecommunity programme would have longterm effect in the students' life both atpersonal and professional level.

Major Contributions of the Faculty

Prof. K.Dorasami, Principal was amember of the National Expert Group forAssessment in Elementary Education andhas contributed for the development of theproposal for Achievement surveys,preparation of Tool design, SampleDesign, Statistical analysis andMonitoring of Mid-Term AssessmentSurvey for Class V. He has contributed tothe development of Research design andTools for Research study on Status ofImplementation of Competency-basedTeaching and Learning at Primary stageundertaken by the Department ofElementary Education, NCERT. participated in a consultation meeting onuniversalisation of access andimprovement in quality of secondaryeducation in KBK districts of Orissa. Hedelivered a key note address on Qualityof Research in Education in a UGCsponsored seminar organised by Firstdegree college, Chandikol, Orissa.

Prof. G.N. Prakash Srivastava co-authored a paper on "Yoga Va DhyanDwara Atmanubhuti- ShaikshikAvashayakta" published in BhartiyaAdhunik Shiksha (Jan. 2005), NCERT. Healso presented papers on "Working withCommunity for its mobilisation" at theRegional Seminar under SSA; "TeacherEducation for Value Inculcation" at theNational Conference on Professionalismorganised by the Allahabad Universityfrom 10-11 February 2006;"Restructuring Elementary TeacherEducation: Quality Perspectives" and atthe National Conference for LearningEnhancement in Elementary Schools heldat Bangalore. He guided research studyon 'The Present Status of Early ChildhoodEducation in Bhubaneswar'. Hecontributed in the development ofTeaching–Learning Material for NationalDEC-NCTE M.Ed. Programme and M.Ed.Special Education (SE-DE) programme.

Prof. P.K. Durani worked as the memberof the National Resource Group for SSAand a member of the Research Committeeof Life Sciences of Utkal University.

Prof. V.K. PAC Research Projects

• A Comparative Study of theSchool Curriculum of Kerala withthose of other southern states :Tools for data collection wereprepared. The data has been collected.

• An explorative study of evaluationreforms at School level in theSouthern states and UnionTerritory of Pondicherry : Theresearch was carried out in 10 districtsof the four southern states and theUnion Territory of Pondicherry. Afterfinalisation of the tools, trainingProgramme was conducted for theDIET faculty from the states understudy who were to assist in thecollection of the data. The sample takenwas 250 teachers and 500 students ofeach block. The data was collectedregarding the evaluation practicesbeing carried out by the teachers. Datawas also collected from district andblock level educational functionaries.The report has been prepared.

• Development of Research Designand Tools for survey of learningachievement of students at the

terminal stage of elementaryeducation : A set of model toolsavailable in DEME, NCERT werescreened and suitably adapted in athree-day workshop. Achievementtests in the subjects of Tamil, English,Mathematics, Science and SocialScience for Class VIII were developed.The tools were tried out in the selectedrural and urban schools of TamilNadu. A three-day workshop wasorganised to develop the researchdesign and also to finalise the abovetools.

• Development of Research Designfor study of causes for lowachievement of students in theX standard Examination ofKarnataka : Meeting with researchersfor identifying the causes for lowachievement of students in the Xstandard examination of Karnatakawas held on 5-6 December 2005. Thesecond activity of the discussionmeeting with the teachers of lowachievement schools for identifyingthe probable causes was held in 12-13 January 2006.

Development of 'Sample MultimediaPresentation' to teach topics inMathematics and Science at theSecondary level : A five-day workshopfor the development of sample Multimediapresentation to teach topics inMathematics and Science at thesecondary level was held at the Institutefrom 19-24 December 2005.

Development of Handbooks/Teachers'Manual in Physics, Chemistry andMaths at Higher-secondary stage : ANational Consultation Meet for evolvinggeneral guidelines for the preparation ofHandbooks was held at the Institute on16 and 17 February 2006. Based on theseguidelines, further work was carried out.

Development of Teachers' Handbookin EVS for Primary Grades : A nationalconsultation meet for evolving generalguidelines for the preparation ofhandbooks was held on 16 and 17February 2006. Based on theseguidelines, further work was carried out.

Review and Development of PGDGCSyllabus and Support Materials : Atwo-day meeting was organised atDEPFE, NCERT, New Delhi on 30-31January 2006 in which nine facultymembers involved in PGDGC programmeof the RIEs participated.

Development of Audio CDs on Socio-cultural Aspects of Andhra Pradesh :Workshop for identification of topics onsocio-cultural aspects and training ofteachers for preparation of audio scriptswas held from 22-26 September 2005.Twenty-one teachers participated in thisprogramme.

Development of Video Scripts on Socio-cultural Aspects of Andhra Pradesh :First workshop for identification of topicsfor training for writing video scripts wasconducted from 16-19 November 2005.Next workshop for developing the videoscripts on topics identified wasconducted at SIET, Hyderabad from20-27 February 2006. The scriptsdeveloped in earlier workshops wereedited and finalised. Sixteen video scriptswere finalised.

Training and Extension

Training of Teacher Educators in theMethodology of Teaching English atthe Secondary Stage : The resourcematerial for training the TeacherEducators in the methodology of teachingEnglish at the secondary stage wasdeveloped during October to December2005. The training programme wasconducted from 2-6 January 2006.Seventeen teacher educators were trainedduring this programme.

Training Programme on Transactionof New Higher Secondary Curriculumin Mathematics for Higher SecondaryTeachers of Adi Dravidar Schools inTamil Nadu : Workshop for developmentof resource materials was conducted from17-24 October 2005. Using theseresource materials training programmewas conducted from 5-10 December2005. Twenty-three higher secondarymathematics teachers of Adi Dravidarschools of Tamil Nadu participated in thetraining progarmme.

Training Programme on Transactionof New Higher Secondary Curriculumin Chemistry : The training programmeon transaction of New Higher Secondarycurriculum in Chemistry for HigherSecondary teachers of Adi Dravidarschools was held from 2-7 January 2006.Twenty-eight teachers from these schoolsattended the training programme.

Training of KRPs on evaluation ofthe Secondary school textbooks ofTamil Nadu : A two-day workshop ondevelopment of tools for the evaluation oftextbooks was conducted on 2-3January 2006.

Post Graduate Diploma in Guidanceand Counselling : A one-year PostGraduate Diploma Course was conductedin the Institute in Guidance andCounselling for the benefit of teachers andothers. 33 students attended the course.

Training of Teacher Educators in theMethodology of teaching ScienceSubjects at the Secondary Stage –Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh :A training programme for five days wastaken up during 20-24 February 2006.Eleven participants attended theprogramme.

Training of Teacher Educators in theMethodology of teaching SocialSciences at the Secondary Stage –Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh :The training of teacher educators in the

methodology of teaching social sciencesat the secondary stage was conductedduring 6-10 March 2006. Ten teachereducators participated in the programme.

Training of Teacher Educators in theMethodology of teaching Mathematicsat the Secondary Stage : The aboveprogramme was conducted from19-23 December 2005. The participantswere also trained in computer-aidedlearning in Mathematics as well as inconducting in-service trainingprogrammes at the secondary level.

Short term Course in Guidance andCounselling for the Secondary andHigher Secondary Teachers : Thetraining programme was conducted during21 December 2005 to 10 January 2006.

Training Programme for PaperSetters on the latest trends, issuesand practices in Evaluation at theSecondary Level-Andhra Pradeshand Tamil Nadu : A five-day trainingprogramme for the teachers of AndhraPradesh was organised at SCERT,Hyderabad from 5-9 December 2005. 18participants from different districts of APattended this programme. A five-daytraining programme for Tamil Nadu wasorganised at DIET, Chennai from 19-23Decebmer 2005. 31 participants fromvarious districts of Tamil Naduparticipated in the programme. Twotraining packages for paper setters, oneeach for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu,were developed and disseminated.

Training Programme for TeacherEducators of Andhra Pradesh ondevelopment of life skills amongsecondary school students : A trainingprogramme for teacher educators washeld from 26-31 December 2005. Thetraining package has been developed anddisseminated.

Twenty-one teachers participatedin the programme. Enrichment materialcum training package was developed andhas been disseminated.

Training of DIET faculty on study ofthe Implementation of D.Ed.Programme in Karnataka : Consultativemeeting for planning and preparation ofthe programme was held during February2006. Training of DIET faculty ondesigning a study of the implementationof D.Ed. programme was held at from 31March to 2 April 2006.

Training of KRPs on Management ofEducation Projects at the Secondarystage : Preparation and planning of thematerials for the programme was held on12-13 January 2006. The training ofKRPs on management of educationprojects at the secondary stage was heldfrom 20-24 March 2006. Fifteen KRPsattended the programme.

Orientation Programme on AdolescenceEducation for Higher SecondaryTeachers of Kerala : Orientationprogramme in Adolescence Education forsecondary teachers of Kerala was heldfrom 3-7 October 2005. Twenty-eightparticipants from Kerala attended theprogramme.

Orientation programme for TeacherEducators on inclusive education forsensory handicapped children from

Kerala : Orientation of teacher educatorson inclusive education for sensoryhandicapped children of Kerala was heldfrom 6-10 March 2006. Fourteen teachereducators from Kerala participated in theprogramme.

Training on quality Institutions for theHeads of Secondary schools of TamilNadu through teleconferencing :Orientation of facilitators was held on 20February 2006 at Chennai. Two-daypanelists meeting was held on 21 and 22February 2006. Two-day training ofHeadmasters through teleconferencingwas held on 24 and 25 February 2006.A 3-day training programme was heldfrom 15-17 March 2006. A trainingpackage on Quality Institutions Trainingfor the Heads of Secondary Schools hasbeen developed and has beendisseminated.

Collaboration with State and otherAgencies

The Institute has extended extensivesupport in the development of trainingpackages for teachers, tryout of thesepackages and also in training of keypersonnel in the southern states. TheInstitute has conducted five programmesin collaboration with the Department ofVocational Education, Government ofKerala, Indian School Muscat, APSWREISociety, DST, Government of India. TheInstitute is extending academic supportto the Joint Project of the NationalInstitute of Advanced Studies (NIAS),Bangalore and the Government ofKarnataka for improving the quality ofprimary education in the District ofChamarajanagar under the title"Vidyankura."

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

SSA Cell is currently contemplating onundertaking certain studies based ondifferent facts and figures that can beprocured from different States and UTs.

As a partner of the Monitoring Team forKarnataka, the district reports of 9districts and the supervision reports of 2visits have been documented and sent toMHRD. The members of the team alsoattended meetings, review meetings in theregion as well as at the national level.

Internship Programme

The workshop on Development ofStrategies for Providing School-basedExperiences and Supervision of PracticeTeaching for Cooperating Teachers of B.Ed.and B.Sc.Ed. internship programme wasconducted at the institute from 27 Juneto 1 July 2005 involving 59 secondaryschool teachers from cooperating schoolsfrom Rajamundry, Davanagere,Mavelikkara and Tiruchira pally of thesouthern states. The workshop helpedcooperating teachers and headmasters tounderstand various aspects of internshipin the teaching programme of RIEM. Thelesson plan format, evaluation profile andthe supervision of lessons by student-teachers were thoroughly discussed anddoubts were cleared.

Working with the Community

The objectives of the programme were toestablish linkage between school andcommunity and employ suitable ways tostrengthen community life with school lifeand school work. A series of activitieswere planned and executed over a periodof four months to achieve this objective.Some of the activities were :

• Survey of community resources forthe schools

• Awareness about school communitylinkage through student marcheswith banners and placards aroundthe community

• Distribution of pamphlets regardingthe items they could give away in thecommunity

• Survey of the needs of the communityschools

• Preparation of teaching-learningmaterials for the schools

• Setting up activity corners withmodels prepared by studentsfor different subjects : English,Mathematics, Science, Social Scienceand Co-curricular activities

• Display and handing over of allmaterials in the two schools adoptedfor the programme.

National Population EducationProject (NPEP)

An orientation programme on AdolescenceEducation for higher secondary teachersof Kerala state was carried out during 3-7October 2005. The programme wasorganised in order to create an awarenessand provide knowledge to highersecondary teachers of Kerala on the needand importance of adolescence education.The programme objective was to developan understanding of the psychological,sociological and interpersonal issuesrelated to the adolescence growth anddevelopment, and to equip the teacherswith necessary skills to educate thestudents on the relevant aspects of growthand development. Around 24 teachersfrom Kerala state participated in theprogramme.

International collaboration

The Institute organised a 7-day inservicetraining programme for contentenrichment for +2 teachers of Physics andChemistry from Indian School, Muscatfrom 10-16 June 2005. Lectures onmodern methods of teaching was thehighlight of the programme. Teacherswere empowered to use new methods ofteaching science with special emphasis onintegrating ICT in teaching.

• Dr Abdul Mushin Mohammed,Deputy Minister of Education,Maldives and Mr Abdullah Ismail,Principal of Kalfaanu School(Primary), Male, Maldives visited theInstitute on 14 February 2006 andgot acquainted with the functioningof RIE, Mysore.

• Dr Johan Hendrikz, Manager, DistanceEducation, Faculty of Education,University of Pretoria of South Africavisited the Institute on 15 February2006 and got acquainted with thefunctioning of the Institute.

Participation at the InternationalProgrammes

• A three-day expert Planning Meetingco-organised by the UNESCO RegionalBureau for Education in Bangkok andthe Asia Pacific Centre of Education forInternational Understanding (APCEIU)was held from 17-19 May 2005 atBangkok, Thailand. The meeting wasattended by one of the faculty membersof RIEM. The meeting was aimed atdeveloping training materials andmethodologies for the training oftrainers workshop to be held inSeptember 2005. The trainingmaterials were related to themes andissues of Education for InternationalUnderstanding (EIU) which includedglobalisation and social justice,cultural diversity and interculturalunderstanding, peace and equity,sustainable development and humanrights with dignity in the Asia Pacific.

• One faculty member from RIEMrepresented India as a resourceperson in 5 Asia Pacific TeacherTrainers Workshop for the delegatesfrom 121 countries organised jointlyby UNESCO, Bangkok and APCEIUSouth Korea held at YMCA in ChiangMai, Bangkok from 12-29 September2005. The themes discussed in the

workshop were : Cultural Diversityand Intra Cultural Understanding,Sustainable Development, Peaceand Equity, Human Rights andGlobalisation and Social Justice.

Campus Interview

Around 50 schools from southern statesand a few from northern statescounducted campus interviews andalmost all final year students of B.Sc.Ed.B.Ed. and M.Ed. who have appeared forthe interviews have already been offeredteaching posts in these schools.

Awards and Prizes Won by Students

Four students won prizes in EnglishDebate competition conducted by ICFAIUniversity at the National College.Shafeeq and Anees, M.Ed. students wonthe coveted trophy for the best PG teamand Jayanthy and Raju of B.Sc.Ed. wonthe trophy for best UG Team. Shafeeqwon the I prize in the PG Level. He alsowon the first prize in an English DebateCompetition conducted by theMaharani's College. Raju won the IIprize in English debate competitionconducted at SDM Institute ofManagement Studies, Mysore.

Major Contribution of the Faculty

Prof. G. Ravindra, Principal wasinvolved in planning, coordination andmonitoring of all the programmes andactivities of the institute. He worked as amember of the National SteeringCommittee and Member Secretary ofNational Focus Group "Systemic Reformfor Curriculum Change." He wascoordinator of the National GroupDiscussion on Signed Discrete Structuresand their Applications, DST, 15-24November 2005. He presented a paper on"Issues Related to Training ofMathematics Teachers" at the NationalConference on Mathematics Education,19-22 December 2005.

Prof. G.T. Bhandage coordinated theNational Consultation Meeting for theDevelopment of General Guidelines for thePreparation of Teachers' Manuals in theschool subjects' and a planningworkshop for Teachers' Manual inChemistry for XI and XII. He participatedin a 2-day National Level ConsultationMeet on the Model Curriculum for B.Ed.courses organised by NCTE. Heparticipated in the Workshop onDevelopment of Textbooks of Chemistryfor Class XI, held at NCERT. He alsoparticipated in the 3-day OrientationProgramme for the Master Trainers fromKVS held at the Institute and a one-dayWorkshop on Innovative Developments inTeaching Chemistry held at theDepartment of Studies in Chemistry,University of Mysore, Manasagangotri,Mysore.

Prof. P.R. Lalitha coordinated a 10-dayTraining of PGTs of Andhra PradeshSocial Welfare Board Society Schools inPhysics. She was also a coordinator forthe 10-day Training Programme ofPhysics PGTs of Muscat. She worked asa resource person for various teachertraining programmes. She also worked asresource person for the NationalConsultative meet on development ofTeacher's Manual for new textbooks, andfor the Pre-internship Conference held atRIE, Mysore. She presented two papersentitled, "Teaching of Physics : What docognitive studies have to offer?" and"Constructing Knowledge from PhysicsLaboratory Activities", at the InternationalConference in Physics Education: WorldView on Physics Education held at NewDelhi, 22-26 August 2005. She alsopresented papers titled 'Quiz - AnInnovative method to transform physicsteaching in classrooms" at the NationalTeachers Science Conference held at RIEMysore, 27-29 January 2006 and"Equity for Women in Science andTechnology. How do we achieve this?"Proceedings of the National Seminar on

Women in Science and Technology: Issueand Prospects, WISTIP- 2005.

Prof. Vasant D. Bhat worked on researchprojects titled " A Study of the HearingStyles of Children in Upper Primaryclasses in Tamil Nadu" and "A Study ofthe Implementation of D.Ed. Programmein Karnataka". He coordinated a trainingprogrammes on "Learning Styles for DIETStaff of Tamil Nadu" and "Designing astudy on implementation of D.Edprogramme for DIET faculty of Karnataka."

Prof. S. Ramaa was actively involved inthe short term cource on Guidance andCounselling for secondary and seniorsecondary school teachers of the southernregion. She is guiding Ph. D. scholars.Two of her Ph. D. students are finalisingtheir theses and will be submitting theseshortly. She worked as a resource personfor training of KVS and NVS teachers onNCERT's new textbooks.

Prof. S. Srinivasa Raghavan wasinvolved in several in-service programmesof the Institute, both as a ResourcePerson and as a Coordinator. As a memberin the Core Group on EVS in schooleducation, he contributed in the syllabusdevelopment at the higher secondarylevel and also in monitoring theimplementation of EVS in schools. Heattended an International Conference inPhysics Education, "Learning Physicsthrough case study method" held at NewDelhi in 2005. He also attended a U.G.C.sponsored National Seminar on"Integrating ICT with the teachinglearning process" held at Ottapalam(Kerala) in 2006. He published papers on"PBL - A strategy for letter learning"in Staff and Educational DevelopmentInternational 9 87 (2005); and"Understanding Radioactive Activity" inSchool Science XLIII, 78 (2005).

Prof. B.S. Upadhyaya coordinatedtraining programme on Transaction ofNew Higher Secondary Curriculum in

Prof. B.S.P. Raju acted as a resourceperson in training programmes for theJunior Lecturers in Mathematics ofAPSWREIS (AP Social Welfare ResidentialEducation Institute Society), Hyderabadand for teachers of Jawahar NavodayaVidyalayas. He also acted as a resourceperson for 21 days refresher course forthe PGTs in Mathematics for NavodayaVidyalayas. He contributed in thedevelopment of mathematics textbook ofNCERT for Class IX.

Prof. Premlata Sharma is guiding sevenPh.D students. She organised a Trainingon Inclusive Education for TeacherEducators. She attended the NationalProgramme on Multicentric Research inEducation, Education for Rural Childrenorganised by NCERT, AIISH, CBR Network, Bangalore.

Prof. P. Veerappan coordinated thetraining programme, 'Quality Institutions:Training to Head Masters of SecondarySchools'. The programme was conductedthrough teleconferencing using EDUSATfacilities. A training manual was prepared.He also coordinated the Regional Seminaron NCF 2005 and the Regional SharingWorkshop for SSA Members.

Dr. M.N. Bapat, Reader completed aShort Term Research Project on"Enrichment Material at +2 stage inPhysics". He worked as the coordinatorfor the training programme on thetransaction of New Higher Secondarycurriculum in Physics for Adi DravidarSchool Teachers in Tamil Nadu. Hepresented a paper on "Prism and TotalInternal Reflection and nature of

Reflecting Surfaces" at the Indian PhysicsOlympiad training-cum-workshop forresource generation group at HBCSE,Mumbai held during September 2005. Summer Science CampA seven-day Summer Science Camp wasorganised at the Institute from 9-15 May2005 for a group of 35 students of theclasses 6 and 7 of DMS and from selectedschools of Mysore city. The objectives ofthe camp were to help students developa scientific temper, see the relevance ofthe science they learn in school to theirday-to-day life and to provide hands onexperience on a variety of activities inscience. The highlights of the programmewere use of origami in the learning ofMathematics and Biology, environmentalawareness through street play, birdwatching, diseases of the eye and eyecare, preparation of low cost apparatusand learning science through toys.

KalasangamaA two-day Kalasangama - 2006, aCultural Festival was organised on 1-2March 2006 to promote aesthetic valuesand appreciation of multifaceted Indianart forms in which RIE students alongwith amateur and professional artistsjointly contributed in performances suchas solo classical dance, skit, dance,drama, classical songs and Yakshagana,Talaavadhya, Light Music etc.

Regional Institute of Education, Shillong

North-East Regional Institute ofEducation (NERIE) was set up atShillong in December 1995 with a viewto cater to the educational needs of all theN.E. States - Assam, Arunachal Pradesh,Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland,Tripura and Sikkim. Development of Life Sketches of GreatPersonalities of the North EasternRegion : Under this programme aworkshop was organised at Guwahati on19-22 December 2005. A referencematerial for primary school childrenreflecting the contributions made by greatpersonalities of North Eastern region isbeing developed.

Prof. D.S. Bhattacharjee, Principal(from 02-01-2006) attended the visionsdevelopment seminar of NCERT and

made a presentation on NERIE in MHRDand NCERT forums. He also attendedthe meetings of NERIE, NEC, delivered alecture in the Centre for DistanceEducation in NEHU Shillong.

Prof. Utpala Konwar worked as O.S.D.NERIE Shilling up to 01-02-2006.
