Government successfully adopts Cloud First Policy

More than 70% of operations and systems of 72 government entities migrate to advanced technologies

• Part of HRH Prince Salman’s directives to improve government processes

• Bahrain will continue implementing this policy on a wider scale

TDT | Manama

The government has suc-cessfully adopted and implemented its Cloud

First Policy, Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA) Chief Executive Officer Moham-med Ali Al Qaed announced at a press conference.

He credited the achievement to the vision of the Kingdom’s leadership and the directives of the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Present in the occasion was the Chief Executive Officer of

the National Communication Centre, Yousif Mohammed Al-binkhalil, and iGA’s Deputy CE of Operations and Governance, Dr Khalid Al Mutawah.

Al Qaed highlighted a string of government achievements during 2021, including the mi-gration of more than 70% of the operations and systems of 72 government entities to the Cloud; the complete migration of 32 public and private entities; and the establishment of four

entirely cloud-based govern-ment entities, namely: the Na-tional Bureau for Revenue (NBR), the National Communications Centre (NCC), the Urban Plan-ning and Development Author-ity (UPDA), and the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA).

He noted that work is ongoing on the cloud migration of the General Sports Authority (GSA) and several hospitals and health centres.

Al Qaed shared indicators of

the government of Bahrain’s successful adoption of its Cloud First Policy, including a reduc-tion in the time needed for the technical infrastructure readi-ness of projects by 60%, and op-erational expenses by 60 to 80%.

He explained that the Min-istry of Education’s eLearning project has led to a reduction in costs amounting to BD97,432 or 89%.

Similarly, Al Qaed noted that the Civil Service Bureau’s Or-ganizational Performance Pro-ject (Takamul) led to an 83% reduction in costs or the equiv-alent of BD80,235 and the Minis-try of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments’ Digital Archiving project cut costs by approxi-

mately 56% or BD82,560.Al Qaed added that Bahrain,

over several years and through hard work, succeeded in creat-ing a robust infrastructure for the Information and Communi-cation Technology (ICT) sector, in addition to ensuring the read-iness of the business environ-ment and providing legislation supportive of digital transfor-mation and the deployment of advanced technologies.

These accomplishments led Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the largest cloud com-puting service providers in the world, to choose the Kingdom as the location for its first data centres in the region, launched in 2019.

In 2017, the government of Bahrain adopted its Cloud First Policy, as per the decision by the Supreme Committee for In-formation and Communication Technology (SCICT), chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, with the support of the Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, to redirect IT investment towards Cloud computing.

Al Qaed said that the Cloud First Policy aims to encourage the deployment of advanced technologies and systems in the IT sector to enhance the public’s quality of life by providing high-ly efficient services.

Municipality vows strict action against violatorsStaff Reporter TDT | Manama

The Capital Municipality has vowed action against

the group of wholesale traders who continue to unload veg-etables in an open ground in Sehla before they are packed and sent to retail shops and outlets.

“We will probe into the mat-ter and strict action will be taken against the violators,” a municipality official said.

The Daily Tribune earlier reported about the residents of Sehla expressing their anger over the grave violation.

They asked why the author-ities are turning a blind eye to the issue despite being brought to their attention many times.

According to a resident in the area, tonnes of vegetables

are unloaded onto the open ground.

“Vegetables must be unload-ed and stored in a warehouse. How can they do it in an open ground?”

Another source said that the ground has become slushy af-ter rains and “mud soaked veg-etables were being transported to retail stores from the open ground every day”.

He said at least 20 trailer trucks transport vegetables to the place, from where it is packed and carried in light trucks and other vehicles to retail stores.

Sources said generally trail-er trucks carrying vegetables from Saudi Arabia and Jor-dan directly unload them at the Bahrain Central Market, from where it goes to the retail market.

Plea to find ‘missing’ expatPakistani family anxious to hear from anyone who may know whereabouts of

Muhammad Shahbaz who has been missing for over 40 days now

• Arrives in Kingdom six months ago to support family better

• Regularly in contact with family members in home country

• Suddenly lose contact with him despite repeated attempts

• Sponsor planning to file missing complaint with police

• Pakistan Embassy promises to help search and find him out

Staff Reporter TDT| Manama

A Pakistani family is seek-ing help from the King-dom’s authorities and

public to find their member, who, according to them, has

gone missing for over 40 days now.

Pakistani national Muham-mad Shahbaz, 41, came to the Kingdom nearly six months ago and was regularly in contact with the family members in his home country.

“All of a sudden, phone calls stopped and our repeated at-tempts to contact him did not yield any results,” Muhammad Sajjad, Shahbaz’s brother, told The Daily Tribune in a phone conversation from Pakistan.

“We are from a low-income family and Shahbaz came to the Kingdom thinking he would be able to support the family better, but what has happened now is something we never thought of.”

Shahbaz’s family hails from Faisalabad City in Pakistan. He is married to Noorian Beevi and the couple has two children – seven-year-old son Mohammed Ayam and four-year-old daugh-ter Anam.

“I don’t know anyone in Bah-rain. I am not even educated enough to contact officials in Bahrain,” Sajjad said.

“I spoke to a friend of Shah-baz, who said someone saw

him on the streets of Manama, around ten days ago. I am really worried for him.”

A friend of Shahbaz, also a Pa-kistani national, who doesn’t want to be named in the report, said he has contacted Shahbaz’s sponsor, who is planning to file a missing complaint with the police.

“Shahbaz was suffering from slight mental health issues and we wanted him to leave home safely. But unfortunately, he has gone missing. We have informed the sponsor, who has agreed to file a police complaint,” the friend said.

When contacted, a Pakistan

Embassy official promised ab-solute support to the family of Shahbaz in their attempts to search and find him out.

“The family can contact us and we will offer every possi-ble help. We are responsible for every Pakistani national living in the Kingdom,” the official pointed out.

The Daily Tribune could not obtain a comment on the mat-ter from Shahbaz’s employer. The Labour Market Regulato-ry Authority (LMRA) profile of Shahbaz shows that his resi-dency permit in the Kingdom has expired.

Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Eng. Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf, yesterday inspected various governorates in the Kingdom of Bahrain which were affected by the scattered rains that started on Saturday afternoon. He also followed up the efforts being carried out by the rain emergency team which works round the clock to remove the flood and clean the areas. The rainshowers caused waterlogging in many parts of the Kingdom. Several roads had water flowing over them, with a lot of standing water seen in other streets as well. The Works Ministry workers pumped out water from the waterlogged areas, while some residents removed water from their own houses and premises. Images, including those posted by netizens on social media, show the effects of the thunderstorms, flooding neighbourhoods and causing trouble to motorists and residents. Cooperation among all concerned parties is continuing to make the roads passable and reduce the effects of the rain. Rainwater suction tanks and mobile pumps were provided in the flooded areas to maintain the safety of roads. Thundery showers are expected to continue for the next few days, according to the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry’s Meteorological Directorate weather forecast. Temperatures are also expected to drop to as low as 12C tomorrow. The people have been urged to remain cautious, as well as fishermen against rough sea conditions.

SEA head participates in IRENA Assembly

TDT | Manama

Sustainable Energy Au-thority (SEA) President

Dr Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza participated in the opening of the 12th session of the International Renew-able Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, which was held virtually.

Dr Mirza noted Bahrain’s announcement in the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) about the adoption of the nation-al goal to reach zero car-bon neutrality by 2060, and the Kingdom’s interim and short-term goals to comply with this announcement.

He said that Bahrain was able at the end of the year 2021 to achieve the nation-al renewable energy goals set for 2025, which is to in-crease the share of renew-able energy resources in the total energy mix by 5%, i.e. four years ahead of the specified date.

Dr Mirza highlighted Bahrain’s strategies relat-ed to the sustainability of energy resources, and the most prominent initiatives to encourage investments in renewable energy projects and increase the share of renewable energy resources in the total energy mix.

He highlighted the im-portance of renewable en-ergy to support efforts to address disasters and main-tain development, which is reflected in combating the coronavirus pandemic.

Bahrain role as ‘cultural beacon in the Arab world’Paris

Shaikh Ibrahim Centre’s out-standing role as a distin-

guished cultural beacon in the Arab world has been hailed by Arab World Institute President Jack Lang.

He also praised the remark-able initiatives undertaken by Culture and Antiquities Authority (BACA) President Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa to broaden the con-cepts of culture in the Arab world and to build bridges with other cultures across the world.

Lang, France’s Minister of Culture from 1981 to 1986 and again from 1988 to 1993, pointed out that the centre’s constant activities over two decades is evidence of the high status it has achieved as a cul-tural beacon.

“Because of the pandem-ic conditions, I was not able to attend the celebration of

the 20th anniversary of the Shaikh Ibrahim Centre, and I would like to celebrate with all enthusiasts the two decades since the establishment of this edifice, which is a cultural bea-con not only within the Gulf region, but also in the Arab world,” he said.

Shaikha Mai has built bridg-es with different cultures and civilisations that today char-acterise Bahrain as a cultural beacon that is positively dis-tinct from other countries, he added.

News in brief u Ousted Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has died, his former justice minister and an ex-advisor said yesterday. He was 76. The cause of death was not yet clear. Keita, known as IBK, ran the West African country from September 2013 to August 2020, a turbulent period that saw a violent Islamist insurgency take over large areas of the centre and north, helping drain his popularity. He was forced out by a military coup after months of anti-government protests.

u A Jordanian army officer was killed and three army personnel injured yesterday when drug smugglers trying to enter the country from Syria fired at an army outpost along the border, a Jordanian army statement said. The smugglers fled back

to Syria, leaving behind a large cache of drugs, the army statement said. “The army will respond with all strength and resolve (against) any infiltration attempt to protect our borders and prevent anyone who dares to violate our national security.” Jordanian officials have voiced increasing alarm at a spike in attempted drug smuggling from Syria over the past year, including

large quantities found hidden in Syrian trucks passing through its main border crossing to the Gulf region. Last year the Jordanian army said it shot down a drone flying a large quantity of drugs across the border.

u Israeli Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Saturday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and would self-isolate but continue working from home. “I feel good and will isolate in the next few days,” Lieberman said on Twitter. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid tested positive on Monday. Lieberman has faced some public criticism for not providing more government aid to businesses as the Omicron variant has pushed Israeli infection rates to new highs, keeping many employees in isolation and customers at home.

u India reported 271,202 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, its highest daily count in eight months, taking its total tally to 37.12 million, the federal health ministry said yesterday. Deaths from COVID-19 rose by 314 to 486,066, the ministry said.

Taliban forces yesterday fired pepper spray at a group of women protesters in Afghanistan’s capital demanding rights to work

and education, three demonstrators said. Since seizing control of the country by force in August, the Taliban authorities have imposed creeping restrictions on Afghans, especially on women. Around 20 women gathered in front of Kabul University, chanting “equality and justice” and carried banners that read

“Women’s rights, human rights”, an AFP correspondent reported.

Djokovic departs the Park Hotel

• Djokovic said after the ruling he was extremely disappointed

• Morrison welcomed the court's ruling

• Djokovic had been granted a visa to enter Australia, with a COVID-19 infection on Dec. 16

Reuters | Melbourne

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic flew out of Australia yesterday af-

ter a court upheld the govern-ment's decision to cancel his visa, capping days of drama over the country's COVID-19 entry rules and his unvaccinat-ed status.

The unanimous ruling by a three-judge Federal Court bench dealt a final blow to Djokovic's hopes of chasing a record 21st Grand Slam win at the Australian Open that starts on Monday.

The Serbian player went to the airport in Melbourne just hours later. Federal agents es-corted him and his team from the business lounge to the gate, where he boarded an Emirates flight bound for Dubai. The flight took off shortly before 11 p.m. (1200 GMT).

In a rollercoaster ride, the world's top men's player was first detained by immigration authorities on Jan. 6, ordered released by a court on Jan. 10 and then detained on Saturday again pending Sunday's court hearing.

Djokovic said after the ruling he was extremely disappointed as it meant he could not take part in the tournament.

"I respect the Court’s ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the coun-try," he said in a statement, and wished the tournament well.

Djokovic, 34, had appealed against Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's use of discretion-ary powers to cancel his visa. The minister had said Djokovic could be a threat to public or-der because his presence would

encourage anti-vaccination sentiment amidst Australia's worst coronavirus outbreak.

Chief Justice James Allsop said the court ruling was based on the lawfulness and legality of the minister's decision in the context of the three grounds of appeal Djokovic's legal team lodged. "It is no part of the function of the court to decide upon the merits or wisdom of the decision," Allsop said, add-ing that the three judges were unanimous in their ruling. Full reasoning behind the ruling would be released in coming

days, he said. The controversy became a

political touchstone for Prime Minister Scott Morrison as he prepares for an election due by May. His government has faced criticism for its handling of Djokovic's visa application.

Morrison welcomed the court's ruling, saying the deci-sion will help "keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe."

"It's now time to get on with the Australian Open and get back to enjoying tennis over the summer," he said in a state-

ment. Djokovic had been granted a

visa to enter Australia, with a COVID-19 infection on Dec. 16 providing the basis for a medi-cal exemption from Australia's requirements that all visitors be vaccinated. The exemption was organised through Tennis Australia.

That exemption prompted widespread anger in Australia, which has undergone some the world's toughest COVID-19 lockdowns and where more than 90% of adults are vacci-nated. The government said recent infection alone did not meet its standards for an ex-emption.

Significant tsunami damage feared in Tonga, communications still cutReuters | Wellington

Tsunami-hit Tonga remained largely uncontactable yester-

day with telephone and internet links severed, leaving relatives in faraway New Zealand praying for their families on the Pacific islands as casualty reports had yet to come through.

An underwater volcano off Tonga erupted on Saturday, trig-gering warnings of 1.2-metre tsunami waves and evacuation orders on the shores of Tonga as well as several South Pacific islands, where footage on social media showed waves crashing into coastal homes.

Internet and phone lines went down at about 6.40 p.m. local time on Saturday, leaving the 105,000 residents on the islands virtually uncontactable.

There are no official reports of injuries or deaths in Tonga as yet although communications are limited and contact has not been established with outlying coastal areas beyond the capital Nuku’alofa and closer to the vol-cano, Jacinda Ardern the Prime Minister of New Zealand told a

news conference on Sunday.“Nuku’alofa is covered in thick

plumes of volcanic dust but oth-erwise conditions are calm and stable,” Ardern said.

“There are parts of Tonga where we just don’t know yet... we just haven’t established com-munication,” she said.

Satellite images captured the

v o l c a n i c eruption on Saturday as the explosion sent plumes of smoke into the air and about 12 miles above the sea level. The sky over Tonga was darkened by the ash.

Concerns were growing among

the Tongan community in New Zealand, desperate to make contact with their families back home. Some churches organised community prayers in Auckland and other cities.

“We pray God will help our country at this sad moment. We hope everybody is safe,” Maikeli Atiola, the Secretary of the Wes-leyan Church of Tonga in Auck-land said, Radio New Zealand reported.

Ardern said the main undersea communications cable has been

impacted, like-ly due to loss of power.

Power was be-ing restored in some areas on the islands and local mobile phones were slowly start-ing to work, she added.

Official damage assessments were not yet available,

she said, but the New Zealand high commission in Nuku’alo-fa had told her the tsunami has had a significant impact on the

foreshore on the northern side of Nuku’alofa, with boats and large boulders washed ashore.

“Shops along the coast have been damaged and a significant cleanup will be needed,” she said.

Australia said it will send a P8 surveillance aircraft to Tonga on Monday to assess damage to crit-ical infrastructure such as roads, ports and power lines, which will determine the next phase of the response effort.

In the United States, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the country stands prepared to pro-vide support.

FBI storms Texas synagogue to release hostages, gunman deadReuters | Colleyville, Texas

An FBI Hostage Rescue Team stormed a synagogue in

Colleyville, Texas on Saturday night to free three remaining hostages of a gunman who had disrupted a religious service and began a standoff with police more than 10 hours earlier.

All the hostages were safe-ly released on Saturday night and the gunman was dead, Col-leyville Police Chief Michael Miller told a news conference.

The gunman had initially taken four people hostage, in-cluding the rabbi, at the Con-gregation Beth Israel, officials said. One hostage was released unharmed six hours later.

Reporters said they heard the sound of explosions, pos-sibly flashbangs, and the sound of gunfire shortly before Tex-as Governor Greg Abbott an-nounced the crisis was over.

“Prayers answered. All hos-tages are out alive and safe,” Abbott said on Twitter. The FBI said they have confirmed the identity of the gunman but said they would not yet disclose it. The FBI declined to confirm the

cause of his death, saying it was still under investigation.

Britain’s foreign office con-firmed the death of a British man in Texas, when asked to respond to a Sky News report that the gunman was a British

national. The foreign office did not explicitly say the dead Brit-on was the gunman.

The Colleyville Police De-partment said it first respond-ed to the synagogue with SWAT teams in response to emergency calls beginning at about 10:41 a.m. during the Shabbat ser-vice, which was being broad-cast online. FBI negotiators soon opened contact with the man, who said he wanted to speak to a woman held in a federal prison.

No injuries were reported among the hostages.

In the first few hours, the man could be heard having a one-sided conversation in what appeared to be a phone call dur-ing a Facebook livestream of the service of the Reform Jew-ish synagogue in Colleyville, which is about 16 miles (26 kms) northeast of Fort Worth. The livestream cut off around 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT).

Putin to host Iranian president next week for talks - state TVReuters | Moscow

President Vladimir Putin will host his Iranian counterpart

Ebrahim Raisi for talks in Moscow next week as Russia tries to help salvage a nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran, state television channel Rossiya-1 re-ported yesterday.

Rossiya-1 did not disclose when precisely the meeting between the two leaders would take place, nor the issues they would discuss.

Russia is taking part in talks to revive a 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers - the United States, Russia, Chi-na, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union - that lifted some sanctions against Tehran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear programme.

Donald Trump pulled Wash-ington out of the deal in 2018, a year after he became U.S. presi-dent. Iran later breached many of the deal’s nuclear restrictions and kept pushing beyond them.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that pro-gress had been made in the talks to revive the deal.

Spanish Civil War bomb found after man recalls childhood attackReuters | Madrid

Police deactivated an unexplod-ed bomb from the Spanish Civ-

il War after a man remembered that Italian fascist bombers had dropped it on his town when he was a child more than 80 years ago. Work on a building in Maella, near Zaragoza in northeastern Spain, was halted after the man said that when he was six-years-old the building was bombed but the device failed to explode.

Metal detectors were used to find the 50 kg bomb which was dropped by the Italian air force, which sided with the Nationalist forces of General Francisco Fran-co during the 1936-1939 war.

“A local resident alerted the owner of the premises that he had to be careful when carrying out

works because during the civil war, when this person was six, the town was bombarded and one of the bombs did not explode. Lat-er concrete was poured on the ground and the artefact was hid-den from view,” the Civil Guard said in a statement.

Bomb disposal officers blew up the device on Jan. 10, but the oper-ation was made public on Sunday.

Loud blasts heard in western Iran caused by thunderstorms - Iranian officialReuters | Dubai

Loud blasts heard in several cities in western Iran ear-

ly yesterday were the result of thunderstorms that caused panic among some residents, an interior ministry official said.

“After liaising with the rele-vant security and military agen-cies, it was determined that the sounds were caused by thunder

and lightning and no special in-cident occurred,” Majid Mirah-madi told the state news agency IRNA.

Earlier, the governor of the western town of Asadabad had ruled out the possibility of thunderstorms as the source of reported loud blasts heard in several Iranian cities and towns.

After several similar incidents in recent months, authorities

said that the Iranian military was holding unannounced air defence drills amid rising ten-sions over Iran’s nuclear pro-gramme with Israel and the United States.

“The intensity of the sound in some places was such that doors and windows of houses shook and people left their houses,” the Rokna news website said on its Telegram channel.

Israel has long threatened military action against

Iran if indirect talks with Washington and Tehran fail

to salvage a 2015 nuclear pact that then-US President Donald Trump abandoned

in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.

Philippines says ‘indispensable’ Suu Kyi must be involved in peace processReuters | Manila

De p o s e d Myanmar l e a d e r Aung San Suu Kyi is “indispen-sable” in restoring democ-racy to the military-ruled country and must be in-cluded in any peace talks, regardless of her conviction, the Philippines’ foreign minister said yesterday.

In a strong rebuke of the Myanmar junta that over-threw Suu Kyi’s elected government last year, Te-odoro Locsin condemned last week’s sentencing of the Nobel laureate and ac-cused the military of using the judicial system to crush its opponents.

Locsin said he would “adopt” verbatim the re-marks of Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt in demanding the junta free political prisoners, halt vi-olence and respect human rights.

Actress-comedian Rebel Wilson to host BAFTAs on March 13

IANS | London

‘Bridesmaids’ and ‘Pitch Perfect’ star, and body positivity advocate,

Rebel Wilson will host the British Academy of Film & Televi-sion Arts (BAFTA) Awards on March 13.

The Australi-an actress, who has been living and working in Hollywood for more than a decade, “stole the show” at the 2020 BAFTAs, re-calls ‘Variety’.

In her “a gag-

filled speech” while pre-senting the award for best director, she managed to mention Prince Har-ry, Prince Andrew,

c o r o -

navirus (then still but a conceptual threat), the lack of swag bags, ‘Cats’

(in which she had starred) and the

absence of wom-en nominated for best director.

That was be-fore the actress, b e s t r e m e m -

bered for her character ‘Fat Amy’ in ‘Pitch

Perfect’, had lost 60 pounds last year.

The 2020 BAFTAs took place semi-virtu-ally and were hosted by British presenters Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary.

‘Suits’ co-star Patrick J Adams slams Meghan Markle critics

ANI | Washington

Actor Patrick J Ad-ams recently

slammed inter-net users for c r i t i c i z i n g Duchess of Sussex - for-mer ‘Suit ’ star Meghan Markle.

While Ad-ams isn’t one to regularly post on social media, the 40-year-old ‘Suits’ star decided to speak out on Thursday, with a big request for hat-ers talking about his former co-star, Meghan Markle.

“Hello to the people and many bots debating all things Markle and including me in the conversation. I just want you to know a couple of things,” he wrote on Twitter.

“1. I don’t read any of it. 2. Life is short. 3. There has got to be better things for you to be doing. Even you bots,” Patrick continued adding hashtag-- “#Bot-Better.”

As per E! News, it’s unclear what spe-

cifically caused Patrick to speak out publically.

Many royal followers have noticed a

plethora of un-kind tweets

directed at the Duch-ess of Sus-s ex ove r the years. A s o n e

user com-mented, “A

good comment on the botifica-

tion of negativity on #MeghanMarkle and #Har-

ryandMeghan.”Patrick played Meghan’s

on-screen husband, Mike, on ‘Suits’ from 2011 to 2019. He was also invited to her royal

wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

For the unversed, the actor has stood up for

the royal family member on many occasions, includ-

ing soon after her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

I n t h e C B S s p e -cial, both Harry and Meghan discussed the reasons behind their 2020 royal exit.

While the couple re-ceived support from millions of viewers, oth-ers were unkind, leav-ing Patrick motivated

to speak out.

Ben Affleck credits Matt Damon for saving his careerANI | Washington

Oscar winner Ben Af-fleck recently said

that his close friend-ac-tor Matt Damon helped save his career after a bad ‘Justice League’ experience.

Affleck revealed to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview that close

friend and film col-

laborator Damon played a key role in getting him to regain his career following the rock bottom experience of working on ‘Justice League.’

Affleck called Damon “a principal influence” on his decision to draw a line in the sand when it came to the kinds of parts he was going to tackle.

The 49-year-old actor also said that his experience work-ing on the 2017 action-adven-ture film ‘Justice League’ was

something he vowed never to emulate again in his career.

“I had a really nadir experience around ‘Justice League’ f o r a l o t o f different rea-sons,” Affleck told Damon for EW.

“Not blam-ing anybody, there’s a lot of

things that happened. But really what it was is that I wasn’t happy. I didn’t like being there. I didn’t think

it was interesting. And then some really shitty things, awful things happened. But, that’s when I was like, I’m not going to do that anymore,” he added.

Affleck continued, “I talked to you about it and you were a principal in-

fluence on that decision.”

Australian bowlers destroy England again to win AshesEngland collapse again as Australia win fifth Test and Ashes series 4-0

• Wood takes career-best 6-37 before Australia turn on style

AFP | Sydney

Australia’s fast bowlers ran through the English batting line-up to claim

a comprehensive 146-run win in the fifth and final Ashes Test at Hobart yesterday, sealing a one-sided series 4-0.

After a bright 68-run opening stand chasing 271 for victory, England collapsed once again to hand the Test to the rampant Australian outfit, losing 10 wick-ets for 56 runs in 137 balls.

The hosts could easily have won the series 5-0, but for some bad weather and heroics from England’s lower order in Sydney, when the outclassed visitors held on for a tense draw.

“To be at the end of a five-Test series with so many positives -- winning 4-0 -- it’s huge so I’m really pumped,” Australian captain Pat Cummins said.

“It really feels like we are building to something big.

“I can’t wait to show our wares overseas so we can really judge ourselves in all conditions.”

England had no answers once more in Hobart to the pace bar-rage of Cummins, Cameron

Green, Scott Boland and Mitch-ell Starc, who shared the wickets between them and took nine English wickets in the night session.

So dominant were the fast bowlers, off-spinner Nathan Lyon did not bowl a ball in the entire match.

England captain Joe Root ad-mitted his side were simply not good enough throughout the series.

“It’s been a really tough tour,” he said. “We’ve played good cricket in parts, we’ve just not been able to structure a whole game together.

“It’s something we have to learn from and not go away and

keep making the same mistakes.“We’ve been outplayed in all

areas and credit to Australia.”The tourists had bowled Aus-

tralia out for 155 during the mid-dle session, leaving themselves an improbable target of 271 for victory.

Rory Burns and fellow opener Zak Crawley got the tourists off to a rousing start but in the last over before tea, Burns tried to leave a ball from Green, only to chop it on, falling for 26 with the score on 68.

Dawid Malan, whose wife gave birth to their first child overnight, started well with a couple of slashing boundaries, but he fell the same way, chop-

ping on to Green for 10 to end a disappointing Test.

Green struck again when Crawley edged the ball through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, be-fore Ben Stokes on five threw his wicket away when he pulled a Starc short ball to Lyon at deep square leg.

Root has endured a difficult series after some bright starts, but there was nothing he could do when a Boland delivery bare-ly bounced, shooting through and crashing into the bottom of off-stump.

All Root could do was stand there and shake his head with a wry smile before trudging off, bringing debutant Sam Billings to the crease.

But he didn’t last long before

he meekly chipped Boland to mid-off where Cummins took a simple catch.

The wickets continued to tumble after that with no-one offering any resistance and it was no surprise when Australia wrapped up the win 40 minutes before stumps.

Brilliant Wood Earlier, English paceman

Mark Wood took career-best figures of 6-37 in an impressive display of hostile fast bowling to at least give his side some hope of winning their first match of the tour.

Wood’s extra pace has trou-bled a number of the Australian batsmen throughout the series and it proved a big factor during their second innings.

He had nightwatchman Boland and first innings cen-tury-maker Travis Head both caught by Billings with only 22 runs added to the overnight score of 37-3.

He then enticed a mistimed hook shot from the dangerous Steve Smith, who hit it straight to Malan at deep fine leg, leaving Australia 63 for six.

Carey, who top scored with 49, and allrounder Green tried to rebuild the innings and took the score to 112 before Stuart Broad was reintroduced into the attack with immediate effect, trapping Green lbw for 23.

Riffa, East Riffa to play in AFC Cup 2022

• Reigning AFC Cup champions Muharraq excluded from AFC Champions League draw

TDT | Manama

Bahrain clubs Riffa and East Riffa are set to

compete in the AFC Cup 2022 football tournament.

This was confirmed yes-terday by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), who announced the teams for this year’s AFC Cup group stage.

Riffa, the Kingdom’s de-fending back-to-back cham-pions, and East Riffa are two of 12 teams from West Asia set to take part in the com-petition, in which Bahrain’s Muharraq are the reigning champions.

The AFC Cup draw is scheduled to be held today in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, Muharraq will not be taking part in this year’s AFC Champions League.

Having won the AFC Cup last year, Muharraq gained an automatic berth in the continent’s top-tier club tournament.

But they were not included amongst the 20 teams from West Asia, who have been included in the draw, which is also set to be held today at the Malaysian capital.

Muharraq were crowned champions of the AFC Cup 2021 following a 3-0 victo-ry over FC Nasaf Qarshi of Uzbekistan to claim their second cup title.

Liverpool beat Brentford to move up to secondAFP | London

Liverpool kept their slim hopes of reeling in Man-

chester City at the top of the Premier League alive by seeing off Brentford 3-0 at Anfield to move up to second in the table yesterday.

Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Cham-berlain and Takumi Minamino scored the goals as the Reds coped without the absence of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at the Africa Cup of Na-tions.

Victory lifts Jurgen Klopp’s men to within 11 points of the runaway leaders, but they also have a game in hand on City.

Liverpool failed to take ad-vantage of an extra man for over an hour as Thursday’s League semi-final, first leg against Ar-senal ended 0-0, sparking fears of how they will cope for the rest of the month without two of their main sources of goals.

But a Brentford side that have not won a league game away from home since early October never threatened to cause an upset.

Klopp made just two changes from the Arsenal stalemate as Curtis Jones and Oxlade-Cham-berlain were recalled to add ex-tra creativity and dynamism to the midfield.

He was rewarded with a bright start as Diogo Jota head-ed over, Trent Alexander-Ar-nold flashed a shot just off tar-get and Alvaro Fernandez made a brilliant save to deny Virgil van Dijk.

However, the crowd were growing restless until Brent-ford allowed Alexander-Ar-nold’s corner to bounce inside the area and Fabinho headed in at the back post.

The Bees went toe-to-toe with Liverpool in a pulsating 3-3 draw when the sides last met in September.

But the visitors only created one big chance to get back in the game when Bryan Mbue-mo turned Joel Matip and shot inches wide.

Jota hit the post and then should have scored when fir-ing too close to Fernandez in a one-on-one.

There was no doubt over the outcome, though, once Oxlade-Chamberlain’s diving header turned Andy Robert-son’s perfect cross into the bot-tom corner.

Brentford were architects of their own downfall for the third goal as Fernandez’s pass out from the back was seized upon by Roberto Firmino and he teed up Minamino to slot home from close range.

Everton fires Benitez after 200 days as managerAFP | London

Rafael Benitez was fired by Everton after 200 days

in charge yesterday with a brutal 40-word statement that offered no thanks to the manager whose appointment

was always contentious with fans.

The Spaniard never over-came his successful association with Liverpool and his position became increasingly untenable as Everton sunk closer to the relegation zone.

Everton has only one win in 13 league matches under Benitez, scoring 12 goals and conceding 27 in that time, although key striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has only just returned from four months out injured to play two matches.

TDT | Manama

Earlier in the stepladder round, Al Bargi beat country-man Abdulrahman Alkheliwi 230-194 to earn the right to face the waiting Falah.
