Grand Prix entertainment is something, which no-body could afford to miss. “These en-tertainments are not just fun, it reflects the success of the entire humanity against the pandemic, which locked up all of us indoors for over two years.

“It is the time to celebrate as we are totally out of restrictions and confinement,” she added.

Special areas were earmarked for children’s entertainment at the grand venue.

The crowd could not stop their excitement as they boogied to the tunes set by renowned Dutch DJ Afrojack and DJ Don Diab-lo, who performed last night at Bahrain International Circuit.

Afrojack is a Grammy-win-ning DJ and producer, who has co-created major hits for lead-ing artists including Beyonce. He was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the world’s top 50 people in electronic dance music.

The Formula for boosting hotel occupancyOccupancy rates hit all-time high in Bahrain, says hotel managers

TDT | Manama

The Formula 1 Grand Prix has made people get their suitcases out once again,

and that is reflecting well in the Kingdom’s hotel occupancy rates, which has now touched its peak.

The latest estimates suggest that hotel occupancies have im-proved 70% to 100% in some hotels.

The sudden gush in tourist arrivals is giving a much-needed boost to the sector that suffered substantial losses in the last two years amid the pandemic induced lockdowns.

Hotel managers have attribut-ed this scenario to the holidays in Saudi Arabia, which also co-incided with the sporting events in the Kingdom, especially the

Formula 1 race at the Bahrain International Circuit, reported out sister concern AlAyam.

Mostafa Zakaria, Director of Sales Department at Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay, said

the occupancy rate exceeded all expectations, resembling the golden age of Bahrain’s tourism market.

“Reservations began to rise gradually for 17th to 10th March

nearly three weeks ago, and it touched 100% in several hotels, making this period one of the best in terms of hotel occupan-cy.”

“The holidays in Saudi Ara-bia directly contributed to this high occupancy rates,” the re-port quoting Zakaria said.

“The demand would continue beyond Formula one to the Ram-adan, but at lower rates.”

Zakaria said that the hotel prices are currently at their peak, taking advantage of the increased tourist footfalls.

The CEO of the Golden Tulip Hotel, Abdul Rahim Al-Sayed, told AlAyam that the sporting activities in the Kingdom had led to the sudden jump in the occupancy rates.

“The MMA, weight lifting and other events are pushed occu-

pancy rates to above 80%.”He further added that Formu-

la 1 had contributed to this rate in a big way.

“Occupancy began to increase from the middle of this month,” he said, adding that this in-crease would continue until this month’s 25th.

“The authority announced a series of events to attract more regional and international tour-ists last year in February,” Dr Nasser Qaidi, the CEO of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibi-tions Authority, said.

“This would contribute to achieving the objective of Bahrain’s tourism strategy on the one hand and support event management compa-nies and other tourism-re-lated facilities on the other hand.”

Killing and stabbing roommates: Court awards man life-term TDT | Manama

The Fourth High Criminal Court gave life term to a

man found guilty of killing his roommate and attempted mur-der during a fight with room-mates in their residence in the Ma’ameer area.

Court files say the culprit, an African national, murdered his roommate within 24 hours of landing in the Kingdom on a job visa.

The Head of the Capital Gov-ernorate Prosecution said the man will be deported perma-nently from the Kingdom after serving the life term.

During the trial, the defend-ant’s lawyer Abdel Wahab Amin pleaded not to charge the man with premeditated murder and that the crime occurred during

the fight provoked by the vic-tims.

The lawyer told the court that his client was in the Kingdom for a job and accused the victims of provocation and attacking his

client using wood planks and sticks.

“The man was trying to de-fend himself when the mishap occurred,” the lawyer said.

During the investigation, the

accused had said that he came to the Kingdom to work for three months by paying BD1,600 di-nars.

However, upon arriving at the airport, things progressed not as intended.

“First of all, there was no one to receive me at the airport, for which I had to wait for hours. Fi-nally, when the pick-up arrived, I had to pay BD20 for a space to sleep.”

The ordeal continued to the next day too.

“The next day, no one came to take me to the work-site, which I had to find myself, with much difficulty and after spending BD5 for a ride.”

And unlike what was agreed before, the company asked me to sign a three-year contract in-

stead of three months. “They also refused to give me

a copy of the contract.”“The company also asked me

to vacate the accommodation they had provided me the other day by charging BD20 to move into the company’s facility and offered no refund.”

“So, I went to the company’s housing and walked into the room, which had other people too.”

“They, however, objected to the idea of me staying with them and soon we ended up in a fist-fight.

“In a fit of rage, I took a knife and stabbed one of them and attempted to stab another, as the rest of the men in the room jumped out and ran away.”

One of the witnesses, who was

in a room opposite to the victim’s room, told the court he came out hearing screams.

“I saw blood gushing out from under the room’s door.

“I also noticed bloodstains on the corridor between the rooms.

“When I came, the victim was lying face down in a pool of blood,” the witness said.

Public Prosecution said they were alerted of the incident by Capital Governorate Police Di-rectorate.

The incident occurred at the housing allotted to the victim and the African man in the Ma’ameer area.

The Public Prosecution seized evidence of the attack from the crime scene and delegated a fo-rensic doctor to determine the cause of the death.

Client fails to pay proper fees: Court rules in favour of lawyer, awards BD1,200 TDT | Manama

The First Great Adminis-trative Court has ordered

a client to pay his lawyer BD1,200 as fees, instead of BD200, for pleading in a case that earned the client more than BD46,000.

Court files say the lawyer re-covered BD46,650 for his client through the Court of Cassation but received a shock of his life when the client paid him a pal-try BD200 as fees.

The First Great Adminis-trative Court viewed the re-muneration paid as insuffi-cient ordered the client to pay BD1,200 instead.

The Court viewed that the lawyer made great efforts in winning the case for his cli-ent, which makes the BD200 fee inappropriate. When the

lawyer took the case, it was in a state already rejected by the Courts of the first instance and appeals.

Incidents leading to the case started with the defend-ant approaching the lawyer to represent in a civil dispute case, where a claim made on a BD60,000 stands rejected.

The lawyer took the case to the Court of Cassation and earned a verdict favouring the defendant. It overruled the earlier decision and awarded the client BD46,650.

The Administrative Court said it could assess a fee if it is not determined by a written agreement, if it is void, or the fee is exaggerated.

Article 33 of Law No. 26 of 1980 allowed the High Civ-il Court to re-estimate the fees.

Human trafficking case: Man on trial before First High Criminal CourtTDT | Manama

The First High Criminal Court started the trial in

a case where an Asian man stands accused of human trafficking.

The Public Prosecution has charged the suspect with traf-ficking two girls, Asian nation-als, and holding them in captiv-ity for prostitution.

The court postponed the case to the 29th of this month for

passing a verdict. The suspect’s lawyer rejected

the claims made against him and said that he had only kept the victim’s passport as a guarantee against the money they owed him for their visa and air ticket.

The victims, the court heard, were forced into prostitution with life threats.

The suspect also had an ac-complice in the crime.

The head of the Trafficking in

Persons Prosecution said they had completed the investigation into the case.

The victim’s ordeal came to light when one of the girls man-aged to make a phone call from the apartments where they were locked up.

Police traced the phone to the apartment and freed the victims, who reportedly had come to the Kingdom on job visas.

Man gets 15 years for growing cannabisTDT | Manama

The High Criminal Court sentenced a Bahraini man

to 15 years in prison for planting Marijuana in his house.

The man, however, plead-ed not gui l ty before the court, saying that he had only planted seeds of fruits and vegetables.

The suspect fell into police custody following an investi-

gation into a tip-off received saying that a group of men are peddling drugs in the streets of Bahrain.

Police soon opened an inves-tigation to verify the tip-off, re-sulting in the identification and arrest of the suspect.

Officers then secured a search warrant for the suspect’s house, from where they recovered de-vices and tools for growing mar-

ijuana seeds. Police also recovered large

quantities of drugs from the suspect.

However, the suspect claimed to prosecutors that he had made the room ready for planting fruits and vegetables.

Public Prosecution charged the suspect with planting drugs and possessing Marijuana to sell.

US targets Abramovich plane, 99 others over Russia export violationsReuters | Washington

The US Commerce Depart-ment yesterday moved to

effectively ground 100 airplanes that have recently flown to Rus-sia and are believed to violate US export controls, including a plane used by Russian business-man Roman Abramovich.

The list includes 99 Boeing airplanes operated by Russian passenger and cargo carriers including Aeroflot, AirBridge Cargo, Utair, Nordwind, Azur Air and Aviastar-TU -- as well as Abramovich’s Gulfstream G650 -- and could further hinder Rus-sian efforts to continue some international flights.

The Commerce Department warned companies and other en-tities around the world that any refueling, maintenance, repair, or spare parts or services violate US export controls and subject companies to US enforcement

actions that could include “sub-stantial jail time, fines, loss of export privileges, or other re-strictions,” the department said.

The department said in a statement the action means “in-

ternational flights from Russia on these aircraft are effectively grounded.” Officials told Reu-ters said it could also prevent domestic Russia flights because of US enforcement actions that

could target companies servic-ing planes in Russia.

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimando said in a statement the department is “publishing this list to put the world on no-tice—we will not allow Russian and Belarusian companies and oligarchs to travel with impunity in violation of our laws.”

The department released spe-cific tail numbers of the planes, including 33 Boeing planes op-erated by Aeroflot (AFLT.MM), and 12 Boeing 747 cargo planes operated by AirBridge Cargo, a unit of Russia’s biggest cargo airline Volga-Dnepr Group.

Aeroflot and a spokesperson for Abramovich, who owns the English soccer club Chelsea did not immediately respond to re-quests for comment.

Volga-Dnepr declined to im-mediately comment but said Friday it has suspended all flights using Boeing aircraft cit-

ing sanctions and a decision by Bermuda’s Civil Aviation Au-thority to terminate their safety certificates.

The United States, Canada and much of Europe have barred Russian planes from flying over their airspace, which has forced the cancellation of much of Rus-sia’s international flights.

The rules apply to any US manufactured aircraft or any with more than 25% US-origin controlled content that were re-exported to Russia after the new stringent controls on avi-ation-related items for Russia took effect on Feb. 24.

Moscow took a first step this week towards keeping its com-mercial fleet flying by allowing its airlines to re-register leased planes in Russia, giving local authorities direct control over the certificates of airworthiness needed for each jet.

Western analysts say airlines

may start stripping some of Russia’s 500 foreign-leased jets within weeks or even days for parts while shopping around for genuine, but resold, parts from countries such as China.

Boeing said earlier this month it was suspending parts, mainte-nance and technical support for Russian airlines.

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security said since March 2, based on publicly available information, it “identified a number of com-mercial and private flights from third countries to Russia” and could add more planes as it con-tinues its review.

Assistant Secretary of Com-merce for Export Enforcement Matthew S. Axelrod said the “action lets Vladimir Putin’s enablers know that, as a con-sequence of their actions, they have fewer places to hide and fewer ways to get there.”

Oil prices up, well over $100/bbl but headed for weekly loss• Oil traded in huge $16 range this week

• Prices set to fall for second week in row

• No easy replacement for Russian barrels gives high floor

Reuters

Oil prices edged higher yesterdau, still above $100 a barrel, but were

set for a second straight week-ly loss, after a volatile trading week with no easy replacement for Russian barrels in a tight market.

Brent crude futures rose 38

cents, or 0.7%, to $107.02 a barrel by 12:05 p.m. EST (1505 GMT), a day after surging nearly 9% in the biggest daily percentage gain since mid-2020.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up 77 cents, or 0.8%, at $103.75 a barrel, adding to the previous session’s 8% jump.

Both benchmark contracts were set to end the week down around 6%, after trading in a $16 range. Prices hit 14-year highs nearly two weeks ago, encour-aging bouts of profit taking since then.

Russia said an agreement had yet to be reached after a fourth day of talks with Ukraine. Some signs of progress had emerged earlier in the week.

“Prior expectations for a Ukraine/Russian cease fire or agreement have faded as Rus-sian military assault on key cities continues in suggesting additional financial sanctions against Russia,” said Jim Ritter-busch, president of Ritterbuch and Associates LLC in Galena, Illinois.

Crude prices have been on a rollercoaster ride, boosted by the supply crunch from traders

avoiding Russian barrels and dwindling oil stockpiles. But prices have been pressured by worries about demand with COVID-19 cases surging in China, while stuttering nuclear talks with Iran have been a wild car-don the market.

The volatility has scared some investors out of the oil market, which could exacerbate price swings.

Meanwhile, output from the OPEC+ producer group in Febru-ary undershot targets even more than in the previous month, sources said. The International Energy Agency said oil markets could lose 3 million bpd of Rus-sian oil from April.

Consultancy FGE said on-land product stocks at key countries are 39.9 million barrels lower for this time of the year relative to the 2017-2019 average.

Erdogan opens huge suspension bridge linking Europe and Asia

• Bridge in northwest Turkey has longest midspan in the world

• Big infrastructure projects are key feature of Erdogan era

• It is fourth bridge in Turkey linking Europe and Asia

Reuters | Istanbul

President Tayyip Erdogan opened a massive suspen-

sion bridge across Turkey’s Dardanelles Strait yesterday, the latest in a series of major infrastructure projects which he has prioritised during his two decades in power.

Connecting Turkey’s Eu-ropean and Asian shores, the 1915 Canakkale Bridge was built by Turkish and South Korean firms with an invest-

ment of 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion). It has the longest main span - the distance between the two towers - of any suspen-sion bridge in the world.

Such mega projects have been central to Erdogan’s achievements since his AK Party first came to power in 2002, including a new Istanbul airport, rail and road tunnels beneath Istanbul’s Bosphorus strait, and a bridge over it.

Generic drugmakers sign on to make cheap version of Pfizer COVID pillReuters

Thirty five generic drugmak-ers around the world will

make cheap versions of Pfizer Inc’s (PFE.N) highly effective COVID-19 oral antiviral Pax-lovid to supply the treatment in 95 poorer countries, the U.N.-backed Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) said on Thursday.

Pfizer struck a deal last year with the group to allow generic drugmakers to make the pills for 95 low- and middle-income countries. They have been working since then to select the drugmakers they will license.

Paxlovid is expected to be an important tool in the fight against COVID-19 after it re-duced hospitalizations in high-risk patients by around 90% in a clinical trial. The results were significantly better than those for Merck & Co’s (MRK.N) rival antiviral pill molnupiravir in its clinical trial.

Pfizer and Merck both struck deals with MPP to allow generic

versions of their new drugs in some parts of the world, a rarity for pharmaceutical companies that usually fiercely protect their treatments over the life of their patents.

Merck, on its own and through the MPP license, has deals with dozens of drugmak-ers to make its pill and generic versions are already available in some countries.

But Pfizer and MPP do not expect any of generic drugmak-ers to be able to manufacture

significant supplies of Paxlovid before the end of the year.

The 35 companies that will produce versions of Paxlovid or its active ingredient are based in 12 different countries, the MPP said.

They include some of the world’s largest generic man-ufacturers like Israel’s Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (TEVA.TA), India-based Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (SUN.NS), and US-based Viatris Inc (VTRS.O).

The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority

launched a tourist informa-tion office at Bahrain Inter-national Airport to guide tourists arriving in Bahrain and introduce them to tour-ist destinations, events, and entertainment activities.

Dr Nasser Qaedi, CEO of the Bahrain Tourism Au-thority, stated that opening this office came as a re-sponse to an increase in the number of tourists visiting the Kingdom and that a spe-cialized and trained team of the authority’s staff will be available in this new office at Bahrain International Airport to assist tourists by answering their questions and inquiries and providing them with necessary guid-ance to enjoy their visit to the Kingdom.

“The new office will be the first gateway for tourists to enter Bahrain, and the authority will showcase the diversity of Bahrain’s tour-ism industry and provide the necessary publications and brochures in multiple languages,” said Dr Qaedi.

The tourist office will also provide tourists a list of tour guides and tour operators that they can contact to help facilitate their visit and book excursions.

Mohamed Yousef Al Bin-falah, CEO of Bahrain Air-port Company, affirmed that this office is part of the airport’s overall work system.

Ukraine food supply falling apart: UNRussian missiles strike near the airport in Lviv, raises fears of Ukraine war spreading west

• Russian strikes hit the Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol in the east

Reuters | Kyiv

Ukraine’s food supply sys-tem is falling apart under Russia’s invasion, with in-

frastructure destroyed and shops and warehouses growing empty, the United Nations said yesterday.

Russia fired missiles at an air-port near Lviv yesterday, a city where hundreds of thousands found refuge far from Ukraine’s battlefields, as Moscow tries to regain the initiative in its stalled campaign against Ukraine.

Mo r e t h a n t h r e e we e k s since President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion to sub-due what he calls an artificial state undeserving of nationhood, Ukraine’s elected government is still standing and Russian forces have not captured a single big city.

Russian troops have taken heavy losses while blasting res-idential areas to rubble, send-ing more than 3 million refugees fleeing. Moscow denies it is tar-geting civilians in what it calls a “special operation” to disarm its neighbour.

“Russian forces have made min-imal progress this week,” Britain’s defence ministry said in a dai-ly military intelligence update. “Ukrainian forces around Kyiv and Mykolaiv continue to frus-trate Russian attempts to encircle the cities. The cities of Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol remain encircled and subject to heavy Russian shelling.”

At least three blasts were heard near Lviv’s airport yester-

day morning. The mayor, Andriy Sadovy, said several missiles had struck an aircraft maintenance facility, destroying buildings but causing no casualties.

The city, in Western Ukraine near the Polish border, is hun-dreds of miles from Russia’s ad-vance and has been one of the main destinations for Ukrainians forced to flee battle zones.

Jakob Kern, Emergency Coor-dinator for the crisis at the United Nations’ World Food Programme, said Ukraine’s “food supply chain is falling apart. Movements of goods have slowed down due to insecurity and the reluctance of drivers”.

WFP, which feeds people in

global crisis zones, also buys near-ly half of its wheat from Ukraine. Kern said that the war has already pushed up global prices to an all time high, and could cause “col-lateral hunger” in poor countries worldwide.

Intense shellingRussia has been intensively

shelling eastern Ukrainian cit-ies, especially Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol, a southern port under siege for three weeks

where residents have been shel-tering with no access to food or water.

One of those killed in Chernihiv was Jimmy Hill, 68, an Amer-ican working in Ukraine as a university lecturer, trapped in the besieged city looking after his Ukrainian partner who was hospitalised with illness. He was gunned down by Russian snipers while waiting in a bread line, and his body was found in the street,

his family said. In his last Facebook post, he

wrote that his partner was in in-tensive care. “Intense bombing! still alive. Limited food. Room very cold.”

Kyiv has so far been spared a major assault, with long columns of troops bearing down from the northwest and east halted at the gates in heavy fighting. But resi-dents in the capital have endured nightly deadly missile attacks.

Debris from a missile blew a large crater in the ground in the middle of a residential block where a school was also located in northern Kyiv yesterday, shat-tering hundreds of windows and leaving debris scattered around the complex.

At least one person was killed, emergency services said. Kyiv mayor said 19 people were injured including four children.

“This is a war crime by Putin,” said Lyudmila Nikolaenko, vis-iting her son, who lived in one of the apartments hit. “They say they aren’t hitting regular peo-ple, they say we are firing at our-selves.”

Bahraini pearls among Queen Elizabeth’s favourite jewellery

TDT | Manama

The precious gems obtained from the lush sea beds of Bahrain are one of the sought after

objects in the world. From celebrities to Queens and Kings, when

it comes to their priced possession, pearls of Bahrain always had a place in them.

Of late, Queen Elizabeth II made public her love for these precious drops.

When asked Queen Elizabeth II about the reasons for wearing a pearl necklace, she replied, “Because it’s made of genuine Bahraini pearls.”

Queen said she has been wearing it for 50 years, “and it keeps on shining, as it is just made.”

These comments were published in a tweet by Dr Abdullah Al Madani on the Twitter account @abu_taymour.

According to reports, Elizabeth received seven

large pearls as a wedding gift from the Hakim of Bahrain, when she married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. Two of those pearls were soon used to create earrings and throughout the years, the Queen has frequently loaned the Bahrain Pearl Earrings to family members.

Last year, the Duchess of Cambridge was seen wearing a pearl necklace and earrings during a funeral at Windsor Castle.

It is also sure that we will continue to see the Queen’s Bahrain Pearl jewellery for years to come!

Putin vows Russia will prevail in Ukraine but glitch hinders TV

Reuters | Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin justified the invasion

of Ukraine before a packed soccer stadium yesterday but coverage of his speech on state television was unexpectedly interrupted by what the Krem-lin said was a technical prob-lem with a server.

Speaking on a stage at the centre of Moscow’s Luzhni-ki Stadium, Putin promised to tens of thousands of peo-ple waving Russian flags and chanting “Russia, Russia, Rus-sia” that all of the Kremlin’s aims would be achieved.

“We know what we need to do, how to do it and at what cost. And we will absolutely accomplish all of our plans,” Putin, 69, told the rally from a stage decked out with slogans such as “For a world without Nazism” and “For our presi-dent”.

Many of the Russian slogans used at the rally incorporated the “Z” symbol that Russian forces have used as a motif in Ukraine. One read “Za Putina” - “for Putin”.

Dressed in a turtleneck and coat, Putin said the soldiers fighting in what Russia calls its “special military operation” in

Ukraine had demonstrated the unity of Russia.

“Shoulder to shoulder, they help each other, support each other and when needed they shield each other from bullets with their bodies like brothers. Such unity we have not had for a long time,” Putin said.

As he was talking, state tel-evision briefly cut away from his speech mid-sentence and showed earlier pre-recorded footage of patriotic songs, but he later appeared back on state television.

RIA news agency cited Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying a technical fault on a server was the rea-son state television had sud-denly cut away from Putin.

It was not immediately clear why the server issue led to such an abrupt and unusual interruption.Ukrainian firefighters extinguish a blaze at a warehouse after a bombing in Kyiv

NASA’s big, new moon rocket begins rollout en route to launch pad testsReuters | Cape Canaveral

NASA’s next-generation moon rocket began a highly an-

ticipated, slow-motion jour-ney out of its assembly plant en route to the launch pad in Florida on Thursday for a final round of tests in the coming weeks that will determine how soon the spacecraft can fly.

Rollout of the 32-story-tall Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and its Orion crew cap-

sule marks a key milestone in U.S. plans for renewed lu-nar exploration after years of setbacks, and the public’s first glimpse of a space ve-hicle more than a decade in development.

The process of moving the 5.75-million-pound SLS-Orion spacecraft out of its Kennedy Space Center Vehicle Assembly Building began shortly after 5:30 pm EDT (2130 GMT) under

clear skies at Cape Canaveral. A nearly full moon rose about 90 minutes later.

The SLS-Orion, which cost some $37 billion to develop including ground systems, constitutes the backbone of the NASA’s Artemis program, aimed at returning astronauts to the moon and establishing a long-term lunar colony as a precursor to eventual human exploration of Mars.

Russian-European Mars mission suspended over Ukraine warAFP | Paris

A Russian-European mission to land a rover on Mars has been

suspended due to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Space Agency announced Thurs-day, as Moscow said it regretted the “bitter” decision.

The ExoMars mission had been set to use a Russian launcher later this year to send a European rover to drill for signs of life on the Red Planet.

However, the ESA said the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Moscow had forced it to cease cooperation with Russia and look for another way to launch Ex-oMars and four other missions using Russian rockets.

“We deeply deplore the hu-man casualties and tragic con-sequences of the aggression to-wards Ukraine,” the agency said in a statement.

“While recognising the impact on scientific exploration of space, ESA is fully aligned with the sanc-tions imposed on Russia.”

The head of Russia’s space agen-cy Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, called the decision a “shame”.

“This is a very bitter (decision) for all the enthusiasts of space,” Rogozin said on Telegram.

He said the project “would lose several years” but that Russia

would “conduct this research ex-pedition on our own”.

He added it would be done “without any ‘European friends’ with their tails tucked because of American shouting.”

Roscosmos had respond-ed to EU sanctions last month by suspending launches and withdrawing more than 100 of its workers from Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana’s Kourou.

ExoMars had originally been planned for 2020 but was post-poned due to the Covid-19 pan-demic.

KNOW WHAT

Russia says post-1991 ‘illusions’ about the West are over Russia has lost any illusions about ever relying on the West and

Moscow will never accept a world order dominated by the United States, which is acting like a sheriff seeking to call all the shots in a saloon bar, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Western nations have imposed sweeping sanctions across Rus-sia’s financial and corporate sectors in response to Moscow’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, plunging Russia’s economy into its gravest crisis since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union.

Lavrov, President Vladimir Putin’s foreign minister since 2004, said the West’s reaction to what Moscow has called a “special military operation” had illustrated that the West was completely dominated by the United States and that the European Union was largely powerless.

Russia and Canada in Twitter spat over ‘kindergarten-level’ UN letter postRussia accused Canada on Thursday of childishly annotating

a letter it sent at the United Nations seeking support for its draft resolution on providing aid access and civilian protection in Ukraine, which Ottawa reacted to with pointed comments.

In a spat on Twitter, Canada’s UN mission added multiple remarks to the March 16 missive from Russia’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia.

The UN Security Council did not vote yesterday on the draft resolution.

Diplomats said it would have failed with most of the 15-member council likely to abstain from a vote on it because it did not address accountability or acknowledge Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or push for an end to the fighting or a withdrawal of Russian troops.

I welcome the plan an-nounced by the Tal-

iban to reopen schools for girls & boys on 22 March, which must now be approved and imple-mented. All doors must be open for girls & boys to have an education and reach their full potential.

@antonioguterres

I assured President @ZelenskyyUa of the

EU’s unabated support. Ukraine’s European path has now begun. Times like these require the vi-sion, steadfastness and stamina to take one dif-ficult step after the next. The @EU_Commission will move ahead on this path.

“They say they aren’t hitting regular peo-ple, they say we are firing at our-selves.”

u The investigation into this week’s fiery head-on crash in West Texas now focuses on the revelation that a 13-year-old was driving the pickup truck that struck a van, killing nine people, including six members of a college golf team and their coach. The young teen, who is still unidentified, and a man traveling in the truck also died. National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg on Thursday revealed the truck was driven by the child. He said the truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact.

u An NGO in New York had hundreds of bulletproof vests

stolen after they were donated by officers and destined for Ukraine as it battles a Russian invasion, police and the organization said. The theft occurred at the headquarters of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), where police arrived Wednesday and learned that

“approximately 400 bulletproof vests were removed from the location,” NY Police Department spokeswoman Lieutenant Jessica McRorie said.

u US President Joe Biden warned China against helping Russia attack Ukraine in a video call with President Xi Jinping on Friday as concern grew over mass civilian casualties in the besieged southern port of Mariupol. The White House said the call lasted just under two hours. “He (Biden) described the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia as it conducts brutal attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilians,” it said..

u At least 31 pilot whales have died after a mass stranding at a New Zealand beach known to be a notorious spot for whale deaths. Wildlife officials said the

pod was first spotted on Thursday, beached across three kilometres of Farewell Spit on the South Island. Yesterday, rescuers managed to refloat five whales who had survived the night. But just hours later, at least two had washed back up and had to be euthanised, officials said..

Top ex-Kremlin official quits post after condemning Ukraine warA former Russian deputy prime minister who spoke out against

the Kremlin’s actions in Ukraine has quit as chair of a pres-tigious foundation after a lawmaker accused him of a “national betrayal” and demanded his dismissal.

Arkady Dvorkovich, deputy prime minister from 2012 to 2018, became one of Russia’s most senior establishment figures to ques-tion the war when he told US media this week that his thoughts were with Ukrainian civilians.

TDT | Manama

Max Verstappen edged Charles Leclerc to set the pace in last night’s

second Formula 1 practice in the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2022, being held at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

The Red Bull Racing driver clocked a fastest lap of one min-ute 31.936 seconds under BIC’s bright floodlights.

Earlier in the day yesterday, Pierre Gasly had put AlphaTauri on the top of the timesheet in the first practice, which took place in the afternoon.

The F1 field now head to a third session today starting at 3pm, which will then be fol-lowed by qualifying.

Last night’s second practice featured representative con-ditions for qualifying, as both are being held in the evening in cooler condition.

Verstappen’s mark was also the quickest overall for the day. The reigning F1 drivers’ world champion posted 20 laps around BIC’s 5.412-kilometre track in the one-hour evening session, after

going for 22 in the morning runs.At the end of the day’s events,

the Dutch driver commented: “The car felt good today, testing here last week means we’ve all started in a good place.

“We had quite a straightfor-ward and smooth day so I’m pretty happy, we also tried a few things on the car in each session and they seemed to work well. You can see that Ferrari are pushing hard and are very close so that’s exciting.

“Looking ahead, we’ll have to wait and see with different teams’ engine modes, no one is in quali spec yet so I think everyone still has a lot more to give. It’s good to see the teams are all closer together, in general that’s what everyone wants and I think over time teams will get even closer together.”

Verstappen narrowly beat out

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari by a mere 0.087 seconds in prac-tice two. Leclerc’s best lap was 1:32.023, while teammate Carlos Sainz was third-quickest in the other Ferrari 0.584s off the pace, with a best lap of 1:32.520.

George Russell had a quick-est lap of 1:32.529 to go fourth for Mercedes, while Fernando Alonso with a best lap of 1:32.877 came fifth for Alpine.

“It was a good day for us to-day and we completed our pro-gramme efficiently,” said Alonso, a two-time F1 world champion.

“It was a lot cooler today than last week at testing, so we tried to adapt to these different con-ditions and learn how the tyres work at these temperatures. Obviously some tweaks are still needed on the setup of the car.

“We’ll look at this all tonight and digest all of our information. There are many questions left for us to answer tomorrow, but I think overall it was a positive day for us.”

Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas made up for not clocking a time

in the day’s opening practice by going sixth in the second session with a best lap of 1:32.951, while Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez came seventh in 1:32.958.

Mick Schumacher finished eighth for Haas in 1:33.085, Lewis Hamilton was ninth for Mercedes in 1:33.144, and Kevin Magnussen made it two Haas cars in the top 10 with a best lap of 1:33.183.

“We recovered strongly from FP1, ending the day with an im-portant session and plenty of laps, so I can say we saved the day,” said Bottas, who missed out on the first session with a technical issue.

“There’s still lots to improve, like for everyone else so early in the season, but you can definitely tell the potential is there: in the running we did in the evening session, the car felt really nice, especially on high fuel. It feels we’re not far off where we want to be, which is really positive.

“It will be interesting to see how it will be tomorrow, in qualifying, when everyone puts

out everything they’ve got: now, however, it’s time to look at the data we collected together with Zhou and the team and learn from it.”

The rest of the second practice classification from 11th to 20th were Lando Norris of McLaren, Esteban Ocon of Alpine, first practice pace-setter Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda of AlphaTau-ri, Guanyu Zhou of Alfa Romeo, Lance Stroll and Nico Hulken-berg in the Aston Martins, Dan-iel Ricciardo of McLaren, and the Williams pair of Nicholas Latifi and Alexander Albon.

Earlier yesterday, Gasly was fastest in the first practice of F1’s new era with a lap time of 1:34.193 with 23 laps.

Leclerc and Sainz followed,

with Leclerc just under four-tenths-of-a-second off Gasly’s benchmark in 1:34.557. Sainz had a quickest time of 1:34.611.

Russell was fourth in 1:34.629, while Verstappen came fifth with a fastest lap of 1:34.742.

Stroll, Hamilton and Alonso were sixth through eight, and Tsunoda with Perez completing the top 10.

Rounding off the first prac-tice classification were Zhou, Ocon, Latifi, Hulkenberg, Albon, Norris, Ricciardo, Schumacher, Magnussen, and Bottas, who did not set a time.
