Samsung Galaxy S6 edgeReview in pictures

The #1 gadget research website in India

1Dressed to killThe flagship Galaxy S series from Samsungs stable was in a dire need of change in the design philosophy, and the brand has delivered that with the S6 and S6 edgeWhile the Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy A series set a precursor to the new design ethics, its the Galaxy S6 duo that has taken things to the next levelThe use of metal frame and glass back lends the S6 edge a premium lookIts a unibody device with a slim waist measuring 7mm and its quite lightweight too, tipping the scales at 132g

DESIGN2Front is the new backThe calling card of the phone is its cascading display on both sidesThe edge screen, as its called, offers a variety of featuresThanks to the curves at the front, youll find it more natural to hold it with the back facing out, since the phone has a flat rearOther design elements of the smartphone remain the same as previous Samsung offerings, including the placement of fingerprint sensor below the home button and the heart rate monitor at the backThe device seems extremely fragile due to a slippery back

DESIGN3

Screen time with an edge (or two)Thanks to its proprietary Super AMOLED technology, the displays on Samsungs smartphones have always been known for their stunning visualsThe Galaxy S6 edge doesnt change that either with its 5.1-inches display panel featuring dual-curved edges, bearing four times HD resolution at 2,560 x 1,440 pixelsIts an incredibly sharp display, along with accurate viewing angles. You can also read it easily under direct sunlightThe device also promises a bit of drop resistance thanks to the layer of Gorilla Glass 4

DISPLAYThe stylish, but barely useful edgesThe Galaxy S6 edge is the worlds first device to sport a dual-edge displayHowever, unlike the prominent edge on the right side of the Galaxy Note Edge, the edges are a part of the display itselfThere are numerous features such as Edge lighting, Information stream and night clock for the edge, though they dont seem to be extremely beneficial

DISPLAY

Lollipop and TouchWiz

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge ships with Androids latest iteration, i.e. v5.0 LollipopLike previous offerings from the brand, its topped by the custom TouchWiz layerHowever, the amount of customisations have been toned down and the UI gels well with the Material Design languageBy default, you get two homescreens along with a dedicated homescreen that shows a visual feed of news

USER INTERFACE makes for an enjoyable tangoThemes allow you to change the look and feel of the interfaceSmart manager offers a one-stop glance at the phones battery, storage RAM and security, along with the option of one-click cleanupTheres also support for motions and gestures, with options like direct callThe device also has a number of preloaded apps such as OneDrive, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.

USER INTERFACEThe snappers that score high on specs and features

The Apple iPhone series remains the undisputable king of smartphone cameras, thanks to their simplistic interface and quick shooting capabilitiesThe Galaxy S6 edge might change the status quo, with its powerful 16MP sensor at the back, supplemented by an LED flashTheres also a 5MP camera at the front The camera app can be accessed quickly in 0.07 seconds by pressing the home button twiceThe app offers a ton of modes and options to enhance the imaging experience

CAMERA

to raise the bar for smartphone camerasThe shots taken with the smartphone are lovely with ample detail and colour fidelityThe impression remains the same over a variety of situations, right from landscape shots to macro photos and even low-light imagesThe secondary camera also offers good quality for capturing selfies or making video callsBeing a flagship-grade device, the Galaxy S6 edge can record videos in 4K resolution. It can also shoot slow-mo videos at 60fps

Night shotLong shot

CAMERAExynos snaps the dragon out with its sheer powerUnlike previous models in the series which were powered by Snapdragon SoCs, providing muscle to the S6 edge is the Exynos 7420 CPU, which is a combination of 2.1GHz quad-core + 1.5Ghz quad-core clustersThe processor is combined with Mali T760 GPU and generous 3GB of LPDDR4 RAMOffers flawless performance even when multiple apps were opened or while playing graphically-intensive titles. But suffers from heating issues, which are aggravated because of the glass back

PERFORMANCEAmple storage, but no option of expansionHandling your storage needs is a 32GB eMMC memory, which offers around 25GB for your personal useSadly, the phone misses out on expansion slot, so you cant extend it furtherYou can purchase the device in 64 / 128 GB editions tooThanks to the support for USB On-the-Go capabilities, the Galaxy S6 edge can readily access the content on flash drives

PERFORMANCEThe battery life is a killjoyWhile the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge has improved in all the aspects from its predecessor, the battery remains an exceptionThe Galaxy S6 edge draws power from a 2,600mAh unitThe embedded battery can help the Galaxy S6 edge last an entire day with moderate usage, but not if you push the useThankfully, the phone comes with fast charging capability, allowing it to charge extremely quickly and you can also use options like ultra power saving mode

Pricing & verdict

Price: ~ Rs 57,000With the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge, Samsung has successfully pressed the reboot button for its flagship franchise. The devices offer top-notch displays, power-packed internals, superb snappers, and of course a stunning design. It surely seems a revolutionary upgrade than its predecessor, though the curved screen on the S6 edge seems more of a novelty factor, than serving any practical purpose.
