SUMMARY I am a passionate product creator and design thinker with long and extensive experience in consumer electronics industry. In my career I've done concept and product design, team leading and design management. During the past 10+ years I’ve worked as a senior level specialist with wide range of creative skills to support Industrial Design and product creation efforts for my employer. As close as possible to the art of making, which has always been my passion.

I've been a lead designer and creator for more than 30 released mobile phone, paging receiver and phone accessory products. Turn of the century I worked for three years as an expatriate at Nokia’s Los Angeles Design Studio teaming up with the multinational and talented west coast design professionals.

I have good understanding of modern Industrial Design creative processes. How to use and benefit of the high end 3d modeling, rapid prototyping and visualization tools. My 3d experience starts from the year 1987. As an experienced 3d artist, I can support and co-operate with engineering and marketing teams to get the idea trough with the highest possible surface and visual quality.

But there is more.

I believe that excellent product design always needs a question why? Also good story, innovation, leadership, passionate people and hard work is required to strive for excellence in inspiring Industrial Design. In today’s competition the best thinkable solution should always been challenged to ensure outstanding user and product experience.

JoSoi Audio is an imaginary brand, which I came up with for this concept- and visualization study. A target was to

create wireless Bluetooth over-ear headphones with premium look and feel including a built-in microphone and noise cancellation. I also designed a leather storage box for all needed accessories, like charger and cables.

Montrilo is an imaginary watch brand, I created with the logo for my watch

projects. The name comes from Esperanto language meaning clock hand.Montrilo timepieces are oversized mass production items, designed for everyday use. Time function is always visible at a

glance. Following two models have quartz movement with a 2-year battery life. When starting a day, just take the

watch with you and go.

Milan chronograph is the latest creation of my Montrilo timepiece designs. It has

Milanese mesh stainless steel bracelet and comes with leather covered premium

storage box as all Montrilo timepieces. This watch model has a coin operated user

changeable battery cover. Several finishes are available. Body diameter is 48 mm.

Model Vasu is oversized, new type of an elegant watch. The body dimensions are 52 x 42 mm.

Leather strap and watch has been put together in the new, innovative way. Model name Vasu comes

from Finnish language meaning wicker basket.

Strap MountingLeather strap will be mounted in the similar way as phone covers. Just slide the watch mechanics

inside the strap. It is user mountable and no additional

tools will be needed. A carefully detailed and designed simple construction will secure the

watch part and keeps it in place.

There are several variants with exclusive materials, like metals & textured leathers to match every

customer’s taste & needs.

Simplicity with traditional materials and elegance has been the most important drivers for this design. The body has inbuilt LED-panel, which directs the light downwards. The height

of light fixture is adjustable to ensure the correct fitment for all interiors.

AC-100 was a fast charger for Microsoft Lumia Flagship Phones. It has captive cable with USB Type-C connector. The output

power is 5.2 V/3A up to 15 W.

• To create as minimized approach as possible with hardly visible part & mold lines with the signature ”Racetrack” shape.

• To further develop surface design from the previous AC-50/60 chargers.

• Cost was one of the main drivers. Each country version shares the same cable and strain relief.

• Manufacturer’s standard ground pin component was used in the UK & India versions to save some extra money.

• To keep in mind that millions of customers will use this charger. So the user experience must be excellent.

…And There Is More | AC-25/90AC-25/90 project was a part of bigger charger design program, where I tried to find ways to save even more in manufacturing costs. This was also a shape study to find new shape approaches for our chargers. I did a lot of studies with 3d-data & waxes, and also with detailed appearance models. Cost savings were achieved with the

common cable, strain relief and end cap for each country version. In design we ended up to the same old proprietary “Race Track” body profile.

Page 27: Portfolio Jouko Tattari

This was an outcome of the shape studies. There was two different charger products, AC-25 (below) and AC-90. The mechanics was the same, but circuit

board and USB-plug different. Both of these products were cancelled, since the company also cancelled the phone lines they were designed for.

The design target was to create minimized and cost effective approach with the best possible

quality & feel. The benefit with new USB Type-C connector is that one can connect it both ways.

Nokia CP-623 protective cover was the first in-house designed cover for Nokia phone products. It was very

cost driven design containing lots of iterations and concept directions with sketching, 3d-modeling, rendering, rapid prototyping and appearance models. Thickness of the construction was one of the main design drivers.

Magnets or metallic parts were not allowed due to strict company standards for antennas and their operation.

Nokia 6162 For AT&TDigital Cellular Phone

Released 1998Nokia 6162 was a sibling to the Nokia 6100-

family. I managed the whole program as a local design manager in end of the nineties. The

phone family contained several different phone models with batteries, chargers, car- and table accessories. All variants were designed for 10 million unit production in mind. I re-rendered this image from the end of nineties IGES-data with Keyshot for this presentation just for fun.

Page 35: Portfolio Jouko Tattari

This was a project to find new mounting interfaces and cover concepts for 2015 phones. I started with external solutions and interfaces, like mechanical

constructions, tapes and magnets, but those didn’t take me very far.

User changeable battery in our coming models opened new possibilities for cover designs, since it enabled close integration to the phone construction with no added thickness. In the end Microsoft cancelled all in-house cover programs

for 2015. Following is a selection of the work, I contributed for the project.

Nokia AdhikaarFingerprint Collecting Device, 2011-2012Nokia Adhikaar was a device for Indian Government to collect finger prints from the residents in the field for identification purposes. It was designed to meet IP 65 requirements. Project team was located in Kaustinen,

Oulu, Espoo, London, Los Angeles and Chennai. One of the most exciting projects I’ve been working for. Teleconferencing was used for weekly meetings.

Program was canceled just before the release, 2012. Everything was ready, model patent included.
