Page 18: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

CARE AND CLEANING BAMBOO COUNTERTOPS

Care and CleaningClean with warm water with a mild soap, or mix an ounce of white vinegar to a quart of water and fill in spray bottles to use for daily cleaning. Do not use ammonia-based cleaning products likeLysol®, Fantastik®, 409®, Windex®, etc. on a daily basis. (Ammonia based products will soften the oil finish if used frequently.)Occasional cleaning with these products is acceptable.

Try to avoid water puddles for long periods of time; wipe up spills immediately. For bathrooms, do not let soap sit directly on the finish.Wipe up excess soap immediately. Tung Oil products can be used around stoves it is unaffected by boiling water/liquids up to 220 degrees. However, always place a potholder or trivet under cookware taken directly from the stovetop or oven.

Page 19: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

CARE AND MAINTENANCE FOR DESK AREAS: CORIAN SOLID SURFACE

CLEANING: Use soapy water, ammonia based cleaner (not window cleaner), rinse and wipe completely dry. Commercially available solid surface cleaners such as Clean Encounters will also work.

PREVENTING HARD WATER MARKS: Rinse and wipe completely dry after cleaning, clean up spills before they dry.

REMOVING HARD WATER MARKS: Use cleaner formulated for removing hard water marks, such as CLR or Lime-A-Way

REMOVE BLOTCHY APPEARANCE OR FINE SCRATCHES: Pour some mild abrasive liquid cleanser such as soft scrub on a damp sponge and rub over area using small circular motions, from the front to the back, then side to side, overlapping the circles until the entire area has been cleaned. Then rinse the top thoroughly with clean water and wipe completely dry. If it isn’t gone repeat the steps above and continue until it is removed.

REMOVE MINOR CUTS AND SCRATCHES: Recommended to call corian certified fabricator or installer to fix.

Page 20: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

GLASSLESS MIRROR CARE AND MAINTENANCE:

UTENSILS NEEDED FOR CLEANING

√ Compressed Air

√ Optical Grade 100% Cotton Cleaning Cloth

√ Window Cleaner

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Before attempting to clean the mirror, use compressed air (i.e. Dust Off®), which can be found in most photographic or office supply stores, to make sure all dust and debris are off the mirror.

2. Water Spots: Use an optical grade 100% cotton cleaning cloth (no lint) and a Window cleaner (i.e. Windex®). Apply Windex® to cloth until cloth is damp (saturated) but not dripping. Clean the mirror in one direction, then wipe using a fresh part of the cloth after each pass.

3. Handle by holding along edges only. (When holding the mirror along the edge, do not press down on the mirror surface with your finger nails.) Do not put any weight or object on the mirror surface in any position.

FLOORING CARE: MOHAWK COMMERCIAL CARPETING

There are several steps that should be taken to help the carpet last longer. Below is an outline of these steps in sections.

I. Preventative Maintentance:

1. Keep sidewalks and parking areas clean

2. Place trash cans in easily accessible areas.

II. Vacuuming

1. Vacuum with slow deliberate passes in length and width

2. Heavy traffic areas require more passes with vacuum.

3. Slow movement allows time for air to circulate through the face yarn and extract well.

4. Heavy traffic areas should be vacuumed daily.

III. Soil and Spot Cleaning

1.We recommend you have a “spot kit” on hand to deal with your most common spots and spills. You will need thefollowing list of materials: Absorbent towels Water General purpose spotter or absorbent compound Bone spatulaor soft bristle brush Small extractor or vacuum.

Page 22: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

COMMERCIAL CARPET CARE CONTINUED

2.TYPES OF SPOTS & HOW TO REMOVE

CATEGORY “A” SPOTS: Water based spots such as catsup, fruit juice, etc.

STEP 1: Blot or extract to remove substance. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Apply a mild carpet spotter cleaning solution sparingly and gently agitate the discolored area. Blot or extract to remove substance. Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove residue. Blot or extract to remove remaining excess moisture.

STEP 2: Repeat if necessary.

CATEGORY “B” SPOTS Petroleum based spots such as grease, oil, shoe polish, etc.

STEP 1: Blot or extract to remove substance. Try implementing cleaning procedure for Category “A” spots using a mild carpet spotter. STEP 2: Blot or extract to remove substance. Apply only enough cleaning fluid to dampen the discolored area. Gently agitate. Blot or extract to remove substance. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Repeat as long as the spot continues to transfer from the carpet to the towel. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Blot or extract to remove remaining excess moisture.

STEP 3: Apply a specific POG (Paint, Oil and Grease) Dry Solvent Cleaner sparingly to a clean white towel or paper towel and apply to the discolored area. Gently agitate. Blot or extract to remove substance. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Blot or extract to remove remaining excess moisture.

CATEGORY “C” SPOTS Coffee and tea based spots.

STEP 1: Blot or extract to remove substance. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Apply coffee stain remover according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove residue. Blot or extract to remove remaining excess moisture.

CATEGORY “D” SPOTS Biological spots such as blood, urine, vomit, etc.

STEP 1: If solids are present, first remove these with a Bone Spatula.

STEP 2: Blot or extract to remove substance. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Apply an alkaline disinfectant type cleaner (below 10 pH) according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove residue. B

Page 23: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

IV. INTERIM CLEANING METHODS: Interim cleaning is a cost effective way to keep your carpet attractive and odor free between hot water/wet extractions. Mohawk recommends two different methods of interim cleaning. The absorbent compound cleaning method, and the low moisture encapsulation cleaning method. Both methods use various chemicals to dissolve and absorb water and oil based soils, holding them until they are removed by vacuuming (dry extraction).

1. Absorbent compound cleaning method: This cleaning method uses an absorbent compound moistened withwater and other cleaning agents. The compound absorbs the soil and spots as they are brushed into the carpet, and then removed by vacuuming.

a. ABSORBENT COMPOUND PROCESS

Vacuum thoroughly to remove as much dry soil as possible. (Pile lifter will help remove embedded soil)

Apply the absorbent cleaning compound to the carpet. This may include the use of as pre-spray, depending on the type and severity of soiling.

Agitate with a counter-rotating brush machine, working the absorbent compound throughout the carpet to suspend and absorb the soil.

Vacuum thoroughly to remove the soil and dirty compound.

COMMERCIAL CARPET CARE CONTINUED

Page 24: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

b. LOW MOISTURE ENCAPSULATION CLEANING METHOD: Low moisture encapsulation uses specialchemistry formulated to encapsulate the soil and dry it into a crystalline form, which is then removed byvacuuming.

Vacuum thoroughly to remove as much dry soil as possible. (Pile lifter will help remove embedded soil)

Apply the encapsulation pre-spray to the carpet.

Agitate the area with a counter-rotating brush machine.

Vacuum thoroughly once the carpet is dry

2. Interim cleaning should be done 18 times a year in heavy traffic areas, 9 times a year in medium traffic areas, and 3 times a year in low traffic areas.

V. DEEP CLEANING: Deep Cleaning is restoring the carpet’s appearance by extracting soil and substances thatcan damage your carpet. The Mohawk Group recommends hot water extraction as the most effective methodto give restorative deep cleaning results. Soil is abrasive and will cause premature wear of the fibers if it is notproperly removed and hot water extraction is the only method that can remove the soil and residue from deepdown in the fibers.

RESEARCH FINDINGS

• ALL FOUR OF THE COMPANIES AND MATERIALS THAT I CHOSE OFFERED GREAT EXAMPLES OF WHAT BEING LEED CERTIFIED MEANS AND WHAT IT CONTRIBUTES TO THE OVERALL DESIGN OF A PROJECT FOR THE END RESULT. THEY ALL ACTUALLY OFFERED VARIOUS DIFFERENT PRODUCTS THAT HAD DIFFERENT LEED POINTS FOR EACH. IT SEEMS A DAUNTING TASK AT FIRST AS I AM NEW TO RESEARCHING THIS AND THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS TO LOOK AT WHEN DESIGNING A PROJECT. I FIND THAT COMMERCIAL JOBS HAVE BEEN MORE APT TO SPECIFY THESE POINTS DIRECTLY BUT MORE AND MORE RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS ARE WANTING TO BE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND RESOURCE CONSCIOUS.

ASSIGNMENT 1: RESEARCH FILE OF MATERIALS AND FINISHES

Page 50: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

Discussion on flooring trends, color and lighting.

After researching different flooring option I have found that there is a tremendous amount of companies that are trying to create products that are sustainable. This tells me that clients are looking for such products to be used in their design. On the commercial side clients want products that are going to be durable but also look good. Color schemes can vary depending on what the commercial space is being used for. For example if we look at the exercise room we are working on in our project red paint could be used because it has been shown to increase energy level and orange promotes cheerfulness and enthusiasm. When you add lighting to the mix yellow or orange lighting is also said to add a feeling of high energy to the color. The most important thing is to know what kinds of feelings clients will experience with different types of colors and then apply those to the appropriate spaces. 10 to 15 years ago you would go into commercial building and find many of the same types of material for certain spaces. With the technology and the push for sustainable design it has opened up the door to new types of flooring materials which gives the client more freedom with the design.

Residential: Blue Stain Pine

Product Features (properties of the

Millions of acres of forest have been devastated by the mountain pine beetle that spreads blue stain fungus. This blight takes over trees, killing them, and staining their wood a bluish gray. Due to the trees’ color, commercial loggers and commodity sawmills leave it behind. However, we support salvaging and utilizing this dead standing timber and highlighting its unique aesthetic.

Our Blue Stain Pine panels and planks are manufactured from this unexpectedly beautiful repurposed wood. Each log is methodically custom cut to maximize the wood’s natural beauty, character and color. Using our proprietary acrylic infusion process, we transform the wood into an extremely durable surface for tabletops, countertops, wall cladding, ceilings, flooring and more.

Product Features (properties of the

Denim is made from acrylic infused recycled denim scraps. It is the perfect product for horizontal, vertical and specialty applications in any market segment.

Excellent performance and durability is achieved through the exclusive TorZo Surfaces infusion process. The Denim board is infused with an acrylic resin, resulting in a panel that is extremely hard and durable, with outstanding resistance to abrasion and scratching. Standard lamination to a Baltic Birch plywood backer board gives the panel added dimensional strength. TorZo’s infusion process allows Denim to be cut, fabricated and machined with standard tooling.

Denim is offered in two surface treatments: one is finished without filling surface voids, providing a more rustic, textured appearance, and the other is filled and sanded, which eliminates the majority of the surface voids (perfect for horizontal applications).

INTA201 Materials & Specifications Finish Schedule

The following are the questions to help you research and gain knowledge about this week’s finish material. State whether you met face to face or did a telephone interview with a professional who is the manufacturer’s representative or supplier or researched the manufacturer’s website. All responses must be in your own words. Frame two questions of your own at the end on the basis of what you think is important for your knowledge and practice as an interior designer.

1. What is the name of the company, and what types of products does it represent? Eco Friendly Flooring. They offer all types of eco-friendly products such as recycled metal tile, recycled glass tile, recycled clay and cement tile, recycled rubber tile, cork flooring, bamboo flooring, linoleum flooring, and reclaimed and sustainable wood flooring.

2. Where is the manufacturer located?

Madison WI.

3. How does the supplier or manufacture work with the interior design profession? They will help put together a completely custom design board for clients. They show all of the materials and finishes and help with any custom sizes or designs. For over a decade they have worked with architects, contractors, and design professionals for high end and large scale commercial projects, to full house designs and exterior work. They will help close a sale or come up with a whole new design concept or theme.

4. What is the recommended installation procedure for the material? Are any special techniques

or tools, particular temperature, or other conditions required? Ensure installation area is dry and free of dirt and grease. Tile may be installed using a latex modified thinset. For Aluminum: Laticrete standard thinset #317 with latex #333 or comparable product. ForBrass: Laticrete, latapoxy 310 or comparable product. For exterior applications, use an adhesive that is appropriate for the climate in which you install. When installing metal tiles on or near electrical outlets or switches, particular care must be taken to isolate nearby electrical cables. Failure to do so can result in harmful or fatal electrical shock. CUTTING: Any tile cutter with a grinder and a metal cutting wheel may be used. GROUT: No grout is necessary for some installations. If grout is desired, use unsanded grout. Tiles may be taped before grouting to avoid lengthy clean up. Cleanup should be done only with a soft sponge or cloth. No abrasive or harsh cleanup materials should be used. Any/all grout residue should be wiped up immediately after application. SEALING: Tiles may be ordered with a factory-applied sealant (ADSIL). This product prevents corrosion and abrasion and is intended for exterior and underwater applications.

5. What are the products' performance specifications: fire ratings, acoustic ratings, wear ratings, stain resistance, and antimicrobial protection? (McGowan 96) Water Absorption EN ISO 10545-3 Wall: >10% Floor: < 0.5% < 0.5% Slip Resistance ASTM C1028 ≥0.60 Dry: 0.73 Wet: 0.68 Abrasion Resistance EN ISO 10545-7 Class 3 (minimum) Class 4 Stain Resistance EN ISO 10545-14 Class 3 (minimum) Complies Chemical Resistance EN ISO 10545-13 Class A Aluminum : A Brass: B Breaking Strength EN ISO 10545-4 Wall: >600 Floor: ≥1300 ≥1300 Frost Resistance EN ISO 10545-12 Resistant Resistant

7. How does this company respond to sustainable or “green” design?

All of their products are recycled, renewable, and are products that have been recycled.

8. Describe at least one of the company’s new, innovative product introductions.

They now offer reclaimed wood which is a new product line for this company. Reference: McGowan, Maryrose, and Kelsey Kruse. 2005. Specifying Interiors: A Guide to Construction and FF&E for Residential and Commercial Interiors Projects. 2nd ed. John Wiley & Sons P&T. VitalBook file.

Current trends in architectural surface materials

Based on the research for the companies that offer vertical architectural sustainable products, I found that there are several that have products made from things I haven’t even heard of. One that was interesting were wall panels that were made from pieces of denim. I think that these things could be more popular but I would guess that pricing for these may be more expensive. Since commercial customers are usually looking to keep costs down this may be one reason why these types of products are not more popular.

Willis and they represent several types of producst such as corian, zodiac, Arpa/Fenix, Artisan, and Granite

2. Where is the manufacturer located? They have several headquartersl located throughtout the USA

3. How does the supplier or manufacture work with the interior design profession?

Willis is a North American distributor of World Class Building Materials which is focused on meeting the needs of today's evolving market trends. Our skills include customer service, innovative sales and marketing, distribution, sourcing and manufacturing. Founded in 1967 by Ron Willis - a true innovator in luxury plumbing. In the 70's, Willis developed a relationship with a great company - DuPont™, and successfully introduced DuPont™ Corian® to the Canadian consumer. Willis markets and distributes world class building products to service Architect & Design firms, Kitchen & Bath Retailers, Home Builder Network, Big Box Retailers and our Fabrication Network. In 2014, Willis acquired distribution rights of Arpa High Pressure Laminate, Artisan sinks & faucets and Insinkerator® waste disposal units in the California market. On January 1, 2015, Willis will further expand their presence in the US market by gaining sole distribution rights to DuPont™ Corian® and DuPont™ Zodiaq® in Northern California and Northwestern Nevada Our hope is to provide you with a bundled offering of products to assist you in streamlining your supplier base. The Willis family will make you comfortable in your daily business interaction, knowing your trust in us 4. What is the recommended installation procedure for the material? Are any special techniques or tools, particular temperature, or other conditions required? 1. Seams • Reinforce all shop and field seams. See Fabrication Manual—Section 10 (C956- H71343). This Corian® reinforcement also serves as the seam support. • Use only approved adhesives. • Do not rigidly adhere Corian® to other solid surface products. Use only silicone to adhere wood, steel, ceramic tile, Zodiaq®, granite, marble, engineered stone, etc., or other solid surface products to Corian® . 2. Cutouts • Use only routers. Use 3 /8” (9.5 mm) or larger diameter bits. Round over top and bottom edges of the cutout to a 1 /16” (1.5 mm) minimum radius. • Remove all nicks, tool marks, etc. Use 150-

Page 76: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

INTA201 Materials & Specifications Finish Schedule

grit or finer sandpaper. • Sand back edge of countertop behind cooktop smooth and round over top and bottom edges to 1/16” radius. • Support within 3” (76 mm), but no closer than 1” (25 mm), from the edge of the cutout. • Leave at least 1 /8” (3 mm) clearance space on all sides to allow cooktop/sink expansion. • High-strength cutouts are required on all cutouts made for heat-generating appliances. 3. Installation • The tops of the cabinets must be flat and true to within 1/8” over a 10’ run. • Provide only perimeter support (top edges of cabinets with or without buildup strips). Use only dabs of flexible adhesive no less than 12” (305 mm) apart to fasten tops of Corian® to the perimeter support. • Allow 1 /16” (1.5 mm) minimum clearance between Corian® and walls. • Support overhangs exceeding: 6” (152 mm) for 1 /2” (13 mm) Corian® ; 12” (305 mm) for 3 /4” (19 mm) Corian® . • Never install mechanical fasteners (screws, nails, etc.) into Corian® . Brass inserts are the only approved fastener. • In wet wall installations, leave a 1 /2” (13 mm) air gap at the bottom of the substrate wall to prevent water leaks from wicking up between the Corian® and the substrate. • Leave a min. 12” x 12” piece of color match material from each counter on the job for future repairs screwed to the inside of the sink base cabinet. • Apply 3M brand aluminum tape (3M stock number 4253UAL35175) around cooktop cutouts. The tape must cover all Corian® surfaces under the entire flange, including the vertical edges of the cutout. • Radius all inside corners of L, U, etc., shaped tops to reduce corner stresses to minimum 1 /2” (13 mm) radius. Offset seams in Corian® buildup strips minimum 1” past end of radius. Do not install Corian® over underlayment or over old countertops. Integral “dust covers” may be left in place if removal is unacceptable to the customer.

JUSTIFICATIONS

The colors and materials chosen for the walls in all of the areas are ones that are sustainable and compliant with

ANSI. They were first chosen by this standard then the materials and products were chosen from what was available from each manufacturer. They were also colors and materials that were chosen based on what the use of each room was while still maintaining an overall theme throughout the whole facility. They consist of clean lines upbeat and calming colors, and most importantly green and sustainable.

WALL FINISHES:

FLOOR FINISHES:

The colors and materials chosen for the flooring in all of the areas are ones that are sustainable and compliant with ANSI.

They were chosen to continue the overall color scheme begining with the wall finishes and then choosing flooring finishes that would compliment those choices. There is a mixture of textures and materials in the larger spaces for function along with design. This will create spaces that are visually interesting as well as functional. The exercise room has rubber flooring in areas as well as carpet in others. The lounge area has carpeting as well as hardwood. The mixture of texture will create balance in the large area.

Page 85: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

JUSTIFICATION FOR ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS

For the juice bar the bamboo wall panels are used to create a visually interesting element, while still keeping the color scheme the same. The geometric circles create a pleasing addition to all of the other flat walls. They are also made from natural plant fibers so they are sustainable materials which is a theme that has been carried throughout the entire project.

In the receptions area the space was created to have a clean yet rustic look as clients are entering the building. The sleek lines and seamless appearance of the white desk area appeals to a more hip modern client, but by adding the wood accent wall you include the Midwestern, outdoorsy, and green friendly clients. These elements also tie in with the surrounding lounge walls, carpeting and hardwood floors.

In the exercise room the glassless mirrors are there to create a space for the clients that are working out to see what they are doing. Glassless was chosen more as a safety feature to make sure that clients could not get injured if it were to break.

Page 86: Health and Fitness Center Interior Design Project for Class

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The health fitness center will be designed to create an inviting and social atmosphere. It will have a modern feel withclean lines and bright colors. Each rooms colors will be tailored to the specific mood or feel that needs to begenerated in each space. In the exercise rooms there will be orange which helps motivate and energize, and bluewhich helps to create a sense of coolness while working out. In the lounge the brown vinyl wainscot which haswood like characteristics, along with the vinyl wallpaper with brown geometric shapes will create a space forindividuals to congregate and feel welcome. It has a Midwestern vibe with a modern twist. The juice bar will havegreen paint and reclaimed wood for wainscot paneling. This will give an earthy, natural, and healthy feel. The overallcolors together create a split complementary color scheme that creates a balance of modern, urban, and Midwesterndesign elements. They are spaces that are upbeat and modern, yet also warm and inviting.
