Naman Residences

Not too complicated, the design approaches the most basic theory of space: create the voids. Splitting those villas function into 2 separate spaces: one for more quite, relaxing pond, opening view to the horizon of the beach; one for more functional, multipurpose with terraces and landscapes Bedrooms are put on the upper block for more privacy, oriented to the sea. Open kitchen and living room stick to the ground, connected to the landscape with outdoor BBQ and swimming pool.

Together with the Beachfront Villa (type A), the materials used in constructing those garden villas are local materials to reduce the transporting fee and save the budget of Naman Villa. The design of the house is simple and sleek, so the cost for construction is not so high. The house is constructing with Hurricane protected structure but still remain natural ventilation

Moreover, we put waterscape into the rooftop of the lower block in order to cool down the whole building and improve the rooftop landscape aesthetically

The lean-to was removed and the space redesigned to include an internal garden, kitchen/laundry, living/dining room, bathroom, (mezzanine) office and store room/garage, for the client’s prized motorbike. Rather than placing the addition directly on the rear of the house, we moved it back to the boundary laneway. In doing so we essentially turned the dodgy little lightwell, that you find in most terrace houses, into an entire garden. With a backyard you have to chose to go outside, whereas here you don’t have to make that decision, the walls easily fold away to activate the space in a more natural way.

Alfred was a real fine tuning exercise, unrelenting on every detail whilst working to a tight and constrained budget. The way the doors in the kitchen come together without the use of a central column, the deceptive mirror splashback, use of perforated steel to filter light, the way the back glass window opens up completely without a fixed panel - it all required the greatest of effort but appears effortless

From the architect. Alfred House is the addition and reconfiguration of an existing two storey, two bedroom terrace, with a tired lean-to that had little relationship with the exterior space. The client wanted us to replicate one of our previous projects, Vader House, as they liked the idea of a centralised courtyard. We were able to push the concept further due to the property’s connection with the laneway

HOUSE ”LAGO EN EL CIELO”

PROJECT YEAR:

2009

From the architect. The house ¨Lago en el cielo¨ is a single family housing Project, located less than 30 minutes from Medellin, Colombia. This house, projected in two levels lets you enjoy a privileged view over La Fe dam, and its location on the land was conceived to allow you to be in touch with nature

External image had its moment in the project but it was not all, it was more the internal result of spaces and routes made for human activities as well as the materials and coatings drawing together the overall volumetic.

The main entrance to the house is through the upper level where a solid teka pivoted door opens to a large hall, next to the main lounge that shares an open kitchen, dining room and guest bathroom. In this same level the house has a bedroom with a bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. All space enjoys the visual characteristic that gets impressive as you go through the big glass doors, to the upper level terrace.

At first instance, you recognize from outside an orthogonal volumetry with a moderate proportion and quite façade. Its skin veneered with precast concrete similar to the blackboard. Density is balanced with big glass windows and super imposing volumes that bring lightness.

A textured wall with rolling stone the San Andres type, separates the bedroom and bathroom that includes a great window from floor to ceiling, it is another place of the house that dumps the pleasure of the sentences: having a bath under the natural light.

The house interior is well relaxed, with common materials such as wood, stones, cement. Furnished with some classics like Barcelona chair, the Eames Lounge chair or the chaise lounge LC4 that honored the heritage of modern architecture and names like Mies Vander Rohe or Le Corbusier.

The internal result of spaces and routes made for human activities as well as the materials and coatings drawing together the overall volumetic.

L-PLAN HOUSE

From the architect. We intentionally thought of building an inward looking house for a young couple who wanted privacy from the street and views into their garden. The configuration of choice was a L-shaped plan that would straddle two sides of the corner site and allow openness into the garden.

Conceptually the house has two opposing faces, an introverted exterior facing the street in the east and south, and an extroverted interior elevation facing west and north. The street facing massing is more opaque while the garden facing elevations provide transparency and views

The organization of the various functions of the home takes into account a deliberate segregation of public and private space. The ground floor houses a guest room, study, puja room and two kitchens other than the living and dining areas and the first floor has a master bedroom, child’s bedroom, yoga room and a family area.

The surfaces of the facade are a mix of white stucco and polished cement juxtaposed with timber cladding on the underside of the roofs. Flooring are large swathes of polished Indian Grey Kota stone.

The living room's verticality is emphasized by large floor-to-ceiling windows with sheer blinds that provide filtered light from the harsh afternoon western sun and open up to allow the morning sun from the east. The living areas open seamlessly to a wooden deck and garden.

Two sloping roofs articulate the importance of the living room and the master bedroom and simultaneously lunge out into views of the garden from either end of The "L-Plan " . A third roof over the yoga room slopes outward onto the street corner. These roofs have a curious detail as they are wedged within bold vertical fins and connected with a skylight-spacer on either end. The resultant effect makes them seemingly float within their respective volumes.

Literature Study

From the architect. Set on a verdant land parcel dotted with large mature trees, the Three Trees House house is nestled -much like a fork- between three large trees. The premise for choosing to situate the building amidst the trees was to preserve the existing trees while enjoying the natural setting in close proximity of the habitable areas. The house is conceived as an assembly of two fairly rectangular blocks, the east facing front block and west facing rear one. Both are connected by a narrow, transparent, staircase block. The largest tree of the three, a flowering Kachnar , becomes the centerpiece of the courtyard space. The shaded north facing courtyard is further animated with different rooms fronting onto it along with the large overhang canopies providing constant play of light and shade. As experienced from house, this space brings opennessinside and constantly changing views of the outdoors, as well as the building, as one moves around the house and vertically between different levels of the house

One of the the clients needs was of a large and lofty formal drawing room spilling out to a garden. This resulted in a three side open, 20 feet tall, lantern like space framing views to the picturesque front lawn on the east and the eventful pool-side on the west side.

The building facade also becomes part of this setting, especially at the ground-plane level where, every so often, large vertically furrowed stone-clad panel walls frame the open space expanse. The expansive and largely untouched front and rear lawns are anchored by couple of anachronous ficus trees that act as generous foreground for the house. It is the courtyard with its orchestrated reflective pool, infinity-edged swimming pool, and floating wooden decks which engages with the mostly transparent, folding threshold of the house.

The front or east block has the public functions such as the entry lobby, drawing room, dinning, and bar all of which face the large front lawn as well as the relatively intimate courtyard. The rear block has a large double height family living room which opens out to the courtyard and the pool deck and two bedrooms facing the rear lawn. The upper level has four bedroom, puja room, and a lounge area for the family to gather. The gym and sauna pavilion sits just across the swimming pool, along the Northern face of the property, and squares-off the sense of enclosure around the courtyard
