Design as a life

“When an elevator fails, it’s useless, When an escalator

fails, it becomes stair.

As a designer we should build escalators not elevators.”

Mistake #1

GETTING CLIENTS

Clients are looking for confidence when they hire. You wanna make sure you don’t land a client? Then act freaked

out and worried. I’m not saying play “hard to get.” I’m telling you to behave like someone who I’d entrust writing a large check to while putting my professional

reputation in your hands.

REFERRALS

When you need a new doctor, lawyer, or butcher, your first inclination will always be to ask someone you trust. You

value the opinions of people you trust, and it’s faster than doing a lot of research on your own.

How to get referrals:

1. Be pleasant to work with.

2. Do good work.

Your are not there to be the client’s friend

Mistake #2

GETTING CLIENTS

Network

Be visible Maintain relationships

Reflect well on people who recommend you

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLIENT

Getting clients is great. But they tend to come in enough different shapes and sizes that some of them will not be right for you. Or you may not be right for them. For the

sake of both your businesses you need to make sure you’re selecting the right clients.

CAN YOU DO GOOD WORK FOR THIS CLIENT?

DO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE?

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLIENT

Good Client VS Bad Client.“The home page just needs two big buttons: ‘buy

books’ and ‘subscribe to our newsletter about

books.’”

.“What’s your goal with those big buttons?”

.“We want people to buy our books.”

.“Are they good books?”

.“They’re the best books.”

.“Why don’t we start by getting people as excited

about your books as you are?”

“Go on...”

.“The home page just needs two big buttons:

‘buy books’ and ‘subscribe to our newsletter

about books.’”

.“What’s your goal with those big buttons?”

.“What do you care? Just make my buttons!”
