Key Codes & Conventions:

What should be in a professional film

poster?

• The key codes which a film poster must have are:- A clear heading along with a tagline which hints

about the narrative or genre (Lesson to be learnt)- Clear images of the film or main character in order

to know what to focus on during the film (With a focus lenses, good lighting, edited and cropped well with no rough edges)

- Names of main characters and co-actors appearing- Credits given to actors/actresses or anyone

involved- Clips of the film to show key events happening- Have examples and inspirations you like- Font which is clear, bold and different matching

with the genre- Good editing programme (e.g. Photoshop)

• The first film poster which we had looked at was the film poster for the film ‘Shutter Island’. The gradient with the colours used in this poster gives off a lot about what the film could be about. This is because as the main characters face is dissolved into the darkness it tells us that there is something to do with inner demons or being consumed by your darkness. However, you then have the light also shunned over the other half of his face showing his good side. The poster reflects how every human has a demonic but also an angelic side.

• This is the poster which we had taken a major influence from, to create our final creation as it was something which was rare. It was uncommon because of the designing, layout used to display and place the images used in the film poster. There are a variety of different film poster which have at least 3 or more items on the film poster which are similar or al mostly too identical. This film poster used different fonts, image layout, the use of space and colours, as you can clearly tell a lot of thought and planning had been done in order to make sure it was different.
