C A R E E R M O V I N G HOW TO GET YOUR

Some are out of your control: • Global financial crisis • No relevant industry in your location • Too much competition

There are many factors that affect career progression.

MY CAREER IS GOING NOWHERE...

And some are within your power to change: • Education • Experience • Interview preparation • Personal grooming

Keep reading to find out how to get the jobs you keep missing...

... BUT IT COULD GO SOMEWHERE!

Ask yourself these questions: 1: Is your CV up-to-date and looking good?

2: Do you have at least two references (who will say nice things)?

3: Do you look the part at interview?

4: Do you prepare for interviews?

5: Do you get second/third/fourth interviews?

WHY AM I MISSING OUT?

• Name and contact details in plain sight

• Include a short summary of your professional history

• List and quantify your achievements

• Mention your higher education

• Include at least 2 references

• No spelling errors (none at all)

• Keep it to 2 pages or less

These may seem simple, but your CV needs to show your attention to detail as well as your skills and experience:

IS YOUR CV UP-TO-DATE

You don’t need to get a haircut for every interview, but covering basic forms of personal grooming is essential.

Wear something neat and tidy - it doesn’t always have to be a suit.

Your personal appearance will be the face of the company when called upon, you need to prove you can do it.

DO YOU LOOK THE PART?

“Can you tell me about a time when you

achieved something”

Answer using the S.T.A.R method:

SITUATION - This is what was happening

TASK - The work I/my team were assigned

ACTION - What I/we did and how I/we did it

RESPONSE - What you did in the achievement of a larger business goal

DO YOU PREPARE? Job interview questions are almost always posed as:

Example:

DO YOU PREPARE?

Lead volumes were high but sales conversions were drastically low.

We reviewed our communications to clients and realised that our marketing emails looked great, but our sales emails looked like they were from 2003.

My team and I overhauled the sales email suites and brought their look and message up-to-date.

There was almost an immediate improvement in sales conversations.

Using the S.T.A.R. method proves: • You can take instruction

• You can complete a task

• You understand how your work affects the greater good

• You recount what happened in detail

DO YOU PREPARE?

DO YOU PREPARE?

Don’t forget to up your game for the second (and third, and fourth) interview by preparing ideas and questions to offer.

If a prospective employer is calling your references, you will probably get the job... but only if your references offer glowing reports.

Always shout your reference a coffee when you see them to say thanks.

DO YOU HAVE REFERENCES? And will they say nice things?

DONE ALL THAT? There’s only 2 things that could be holding you back from career progression:

EDUCATION or EXPERIENCE Luckily, both are easier to remedy than you might think.

EDUCATION
