DESCRIPTION

http://www.mworker.com/en/how-eliminating-paper-will-increase-your-productivity/ An average office worker spends 7-8 hours a day in their office/cubical. That’s the bigger part of the day. Some people spend about the same amount of time working at their desk as they do with their friends and family. This made me think… if the workspace plays such an important role in our lives, do we pay enough attention to how it’s set up? It is scientifically proven that everything that we notice, including physical objects, causes a reaction, which results in stress. The more there is in our field of visibility, the more stressed we are. Now have look at your desk… There are people, who manage to keep their desks free of clutter. The majority, however, is being drowned by a pile of papers, electronic devices, office supplies, you name it. Well, what if we got rid of one of the main causes of this mess – paper? First of all, the pile of actual papers from your desk would disappear. Why is it a great idea to keep your documents electronically? Because it is much easier to arrange them, it does not require physical storage space, and documents become searchable – it is easier to use them for their purpose – storing information. Furthermore, if there’s no more paper, you would probably not need pens, pencils, pins, stapler, sticky notes, etc. You would not need any office supplies, because they are only used to facilitate the use of paper. Even more, you would not need any or significantly less drawers to store all of this stuff. Finally, you could throw away your scanner and printer, and the fax machine if you still have one, because all of these things are used to digitalize paper documents or do the opposite. No papers – no need for that. I realize the extreme nature of this idea, because we all work in different environments, and we all have to work with other people, who might not be fond of the idea of giving up paper. On the other hand, these tiny details, which we rarely notice, tend to be great time wasters and energy suckers. See this as a wakeup call in order to realize that the focus of office layout design and ergonomics, as well as design in general, should be humans rather than things. Understanding the importance of this concept and being ready to challenge the status quo can lead to numerous positive outcomes: greater productivity and job satisfaction, creativity outbursts, a greater sense of fulfillment, and happiness in general. I challenge you to remove one thing (not necessarily paper) from your office routine. Share your experiences in the comments, and infect others with the minimalist vibe!

• The paperless office idea has been borrowed from Leo Babauta’s book “The Simple Guide to a Minimalist Life” (highly recommended).
