Focus the search by …• Develop goals for the event/search/interaction
• Create and practice an elevator speech to explain/sell your education, skills and knowledge
• Acknowledge your dreams, motivations and concerns you may for accomplishing these goals

What to Expect at the Industry/Career Expo Event:
• This is a career event - asking about a job is not a surprise!
• They are considering you, but YOU are considering THEM as well
• Don’t put “all your eggs in one basket”- Consider all companies, not just traditional companies for your degree area- Practice your introduction and interactions with other companies before
approaching your #1 choice
• Anticipate the questions & prepare
• Bring Resumes (customized to specific companies and general)- Career Services offers resume critiques- Check out Pop-Up Career Services schedule
Part II: Resumes Myths & Truths
True or False?
• Unique or unusual resumes attract more attention and are easier to read
• Resume content is more important than style or format
• It’s OK to exaggerate your accomplishments
• Cover letters are more often read than resumes
• Personal photos improve your marketability
• Indicating your age or marital status will prove that you are mature
• It is ok the round up your GPA

• The most important “paper” you write while in college
• First impression you make with a company – make sure it is a positive one!
• Nothing disqualifies a candidate faster than a poorly written cover letter or resume
• Your resume is a marketing tool to sell your best traits
• Employers spend less than 30 seconds scanning a resume before making a decision on whether or not to bring someone in for an interview

The Resume Basics
Basics tips:• Laser printed on white or ivory paper (at least 24# stock)
– Photocopies should not be submitted• Limit to 1 page when possible – 2 pages is acceptable for
– several years of industry experience or a federal resume– academic curriculum vitae, international resume, or online resumes
• Avoid templates – create your own format!• Use easy to read, attention-grabbing format
Basics to avoid:• Do not include high school information
o Exception: first-year students; Federal Government applications
• Do not include photos or personal information (i.e. age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, health condition/status, SSN)o Exception: those applying for positions with Federal Government will
need to include SSN with application

Format:• Margins should be no
smaller than ½ inch• Use plain typeface (Arial,
Times New Roman, Verdana, Calibri ) o Font size 10 – 12 point
font• Name should be larger font
(16-20) and in boldface• Use bulleted points to
highlight important information
Contact/Header
• Name – should be large and bold• Address- (not needed) If you want, only include home or school
address• Telephone number
o May include home or cell – ONLY one recommendedo Never include your work number on a resumeo Be sure your voicemail (or roommate) is professional
• E-mail address (pick one – and check it!)
Examples:
Objective
When should you include an objective on a resume?
• One to two sentences in length• Be specific, do not add “fluff”• Should be specific to the company and position you are
seeking• Extensive Experience:
o Provide 2-3 sentence or bulleted executive summary or professional profile highlighting skills and accomplishments
Education
• Spell out the degree title - Bachelor of Science in ….• Specify any minors or areas of concentration• Graduation date is a MUST for the expecting or recent grads• Please list your GPA if it is a 3.0 or above; major GPA is also a possibility but you need to
include the CGPA; if unsure, check with Career Services• You can include relevant coursework under the Education• Include Study Abroad in Education section, especially if relevant to your degree
Customize the Resume
Tailor the resume to specific positions by showing what you are learning in your classes
Examples:
Experience
• You can have work, intern/co-op, project, military, relevant or flight experience listed
• Start with the most recent experience and work backwards (reverse chronological order)
• Include company name, location, dates worked, job title and main accomplishments (use bullets to make the info stand out)
• Use concise language and limit points to 3 or 4 key elements or accomplishments
• Start each bullet point with a verb/action word and use appropriate tense
• Use concise, descriptive and varied languageo Quantify duties and successes (#, %, $)
Skills
List or categorize skills to organize - can include:– Computer, Technical, Language, Communication, or Leadership Skills

• Leadership/Activities/Involvement include memberships in organizations, fraternities, sororities, and clubs
– List any positions held in the clubs or organizations
• Scholarships, Recognitions, Awards, and Commendations can be listed

References
• Do not refer to references on your resume – it goes without saying
• Type a separate list using same font and paper as your resume
• Include name, title, company, contact information (address, phone #, e-mail)
• Always check first with anyone you wish to use as a reference
Professional Dress for Expo
Professional attire is expected for attendance at the Industry/Career Expo• Suits are ideal• Gentlemen: button down shirts and ties• Ladies: conservative or appropriate blouses• Colors for shirts should be muted like white, off-white or light blue• Shoes should be polished and professional
The minimum professional dress is business casual. Flight and ROTC uniforms are appropriate Expo dress. Religious and cultural attire will be accepted.

LinkedIn Essentials
• Complete your profile! Fill out sections that are suggested such as projects/organizations, etc.
• Join the ERAU Alumni Association Group, ERAU Career Services Group, and other relevant groups
• Comment on group discussion boards or post your own topic/question/request
• Tap into the LinkedIn Alumni Tool and University Pages
• For help creating your profile use LinkedIn “Higher Ed” – there are quick tip sheets and videos just for college students
• Use the LinkedIn privacy settings carefully.
• Manage your online brand and be sure you keep your LinkedIn profile updated. After all, it can be accessed by an employer anytime.
