• Morgan Stanley was founded in the U.S. by the Henry Morgan and Harold Stanley in 1935.
• After the Glass-Steagall Act was passed in 1933, commercial banks were not permitted to engage in a number of securities activities.
• Morgan Stanley handled 24% of all public offerings and private placements within 1 year of opening.
History in the Making
• Morgan Stanley entered the New York Stock Exchange in 1942.
• In 1996, Morgan Stanley acquired Van Kampen American Capital.
• In 2008, Morgan Stanley was forced to borrow $107 billion from the federal government.
• The company bought Smith Barney from Citigroup immediately following the recession in 2009.

• James Gorman is the current CEO and chairman of Morgan Stanley.
• He serves as the public leader of Morgan Stanley and helps communicate the company’s mission to the public.
• He is a different type of leader.
• He handled the company during the recession and oversaw its metamorphosis.

• Ruth Porat is the current Chief Financial Officer.
• She is widely regarded as one of the most powerful women in finance.
• She is a key decision maker regarding all financial-based opportunities.

• Jim Rosenthal joined the company in the middle of the 2008 crisis.
• He is responsible for firmwide technology and operations.
• He took over for Tom Nides, who went to work for Hillary Clinton.

• Greg Fleming is currently in charge of both wealth management and investment management.
• He was a former COO for Merrill Lynch.
• He is responsible for overseeing the wealth management division, which is responsible for almost 40% of revenue.
