General Cleaning Vocational English Language Training
Module 2
Module Duration: 2 hours (4:00-6:00, Tuesday)
Module Description: Teach 12 basic vocabulary words with accompanying activities.
Module Goals:
Have students successfully sign in on their “replica timecard.”
Teach the following words:
o Duster
o Brush
o Rag
o Sponge
o Toilet
o Toilet Paper
o Floor
o Bathtub
o Shower
o Mirror
o Sink
o Carpet
Review the words through classroom activities
Send students home with vocabulary list and activity handouts to study

Fill out
timesheet
(10 Min.)
Have students fill out their sign-in/time sheet
when they first arrive in class.
Tell them that it is like a timesheet that they
will be required to fill out for their employer.
Make sure each student has done the first
week correctly.
Show them where in the classroom they can
find the time and date (you can write it for
them on the board)

Introductions
(10 Min) Introduce yourself
Ask for student introductions
o Ask them to say their name, where
they’re from, how long they’ve been here
and their address or crossroads.
ACTIVITY:
Have students come to the front of
the class and introduce themselves.

Tell them that we will be using PowerPoint and
activities like last class to learn about cleaning
items.
If any of the items are available show them to
give the students an idea of what we will be
covering.

DEMONSTATIONS: When teaching
each word show them how to use the
item if the prop is available.
For example: Grab the rag, spray it
with the spray bottle and clean off the
whiteboard.

Review with the class the answers
and make sure they get the right
answers on their handout.
When going over each answer have a
student come demonstrate how to use
the item as you have them repeat the
word.

teaching each word emphasize the
cleaning tool that goes along with it.
Such as scrub brush with toilet.
BREAK
(10 Min) Give the class a 10 minute break
Make sure that they sign out on their timesheet
Make sure that they also sign back in.

Review with flashcards
Have the students work in groups to test each
other.
DEMONSTRATION - Show them
how to lay all of the cards down with
picture up and to turn it over and read
and say aloud the word.

different vocabulary words with cards.

Highlight the fact that one
restroom is for women and
one for men and show them
the sign.
In the bathroom, see if anyone
can identify the object by
sticking the word to the right
place. Always make sure that
they say the word aloud.
At the end, make sure all of
the words are in the right
place, have the refugees wash
their hands (stress the
importance) and return to the
classroom.

ACTIVITY:
Go over each circle item and
see if any of the volunteers
can name the item.
If not, ask them to consult
their vocabulary sheet or
flashcards and to say the
word.

(5 Min)
Go over the differences between carpet and floor
once more on the PowerPoint
Take students out of the class and into Waleed’s
office to show them carpet vs. flooring in the
hallway. (if a carpeted rug is available as a prop
this can be used instead.)
Emphasize the fact that vacuums are used on the
carpet and mops on the floor.
Take these with you to demonstrate.

Follow up:
Report the following to Stephen or Waleed
o Any students that really struggle to understand concepts or are very slow learners.
o Anyone that detracts from the class or has a bad attitude.
o Anyone that struggles with personal hygiene.
Log your progress and notes from the day on the GoogleDoc for the person teaching the next
module.

Be creative – bring in your own wrap-up
activity.
Have students act out how to use different props
from the lesson.

“washing the floor with the mop” or
“sweeping with the broom.”
You may decide to use flashcards at this point if
they were skipped earlier.
Finalize

Have students finalize their sign-in card and
collect them. They are not to go home.
