Agenda
Scope & objectives of LPQI LPQI history LPQI organization & structure Major achievements LPQI missions in 2008 and beyond Learning from LPQI
www.leonardo-energy.org
LPQI the international educational programme regarding Power Quality
Scope is the non-residential sector :– tertiary and industrial buildings– critical services
Core purpose of the partnership creation :– To create a strategic & operational
alliance to promote, strengthen & facilitate education on PQ issues, solutions & their implementation
www.leonardo-energy.org
LPQI initial education objectives in 2000
To help the professionals :– Recognise– Diagnose– Evaluate power quality, power utilization
and EMC problems
in privately-operated, low-voltage electrical installations
www.leonardo-energy.org
LPQI history : a well established program
Initiated on June, 8, 2000 with a European congress for PQ
– Education needs assessment of CPD relating to PQ
– PQ impacts enforced by a pan-European study on “the cost of poor PQ” in 2001
Initially funded by EC & ECI
www.leonardo-energy.org
LPQI impact has been rewarded by the Leonardo award in 2004
For its quality and innovation in training professionals in the electricity sector“Strengthening European Co-operation in
Vocational Education and Training”
…and led to important change in electrical design practices among engineers
www.leonardo-energy.org
LPQI is now a network of 16 local partnerships and 105 partners around the world
www.leonardo-energy.org
Today, LPQI is now one of most active Leonardo ENERGY community of practice
Leonardo ENERGY
www.leonardo-energy.org/
includes 12 topics of interest, among them : Energy Efficiency Distributed Generation Renewable Transformers
The Global Community for Sustainable Energy Professionals
www.leonardo-energy.org
In 7 years, LPQI has created a significant world-class free library dedicated to PQ
45 application notes 2 different EPQU
Periodicals issued twice/year :– EPQU Magazine– EPQU Journal
A PQ Book Assessment quizzes 13 webcasts Reports, ebooks, white
papers… Downloadable tools
Webinars every month Seminars in most
European cities The launch of a
certification programme : LPQIVES
And LPQI website has become the one stop education open portal for most professionals
www.leonardo-energy.org
LPQI now reaches over 100,000 individuals per year
Academics
End-users•Maintenance professionals•Building & facility managers
•Property developers•Architects
Electricity & Energy professionals•Design engineers•Qualified contractors,•Installers…
Regulators

Over the years, more than 500 professionals have enrolled through LPQIVES
Module 0 - Introduction to Power Quality Module 1 - Voltage dips and swells Module 2 - Harmonics and Interharmonics Module 3 - Voltage fluctuations / flicker Module 4 - Overvoltages (Transients) Module 5 - Reliability of electricity supply Module 6 – Earthing Module 7 - The influence of static converters on
the supply network Module 8 - Compensation of reactive power - Module 9 - Distributed Energy Sources Module 10 - Utility

Learning from LPQI : a focus around 3 missions
Education & training fine tuned for individuals
A reference for all PQ matters in
Europe
Lead the dynamic through adequate
knowledge management & e-dissemination
Print publications

Education & training development in 2008
Rich & live content are now the priority :– minute lectures– interactive tools– Interactive animation– e-books– quizz
As well as fast production of articles, briefing papers, tutorials & AN in partnership or through outsourcing
www.leonardo-energy.org
Minute lectures
What:– Short tutorials on
the web to introduce a topics
– Knowledge broadening rather than deepening
How:– 10-15 slide ppt
converted to Flash– 200-2000 views @
2006
www.leonardo-energy.org
Interactive tools
What : a library of tools making life easier at the design stage
Who : for the smart electrical engineer
www.leonardo-energy.org
Interactive & educative animation
What : an animation dedicated to make the audience experience “for real” the pq phenomenon
Who : for the non technical professional who wants to have a basis level of understanding
How : flash animation
www.leonardo-energy.org
e-books
Available online or as pdf A successful way of “spreading the word”
www.leonardo-energy.org
Quizz : learning by playing
Based on our “best sellers” Application Note
Help our audience complete his/her own e-learning experience by assessing knowledge
www.leonardo-energy.org
A focus on LPQI Dissemination evolution (1/2)
From XX century marketing :– Direct mail– Seminars (LPQI & 3rd party)– Trade fairs– Technical press– Static Web

Technical press partners
Media partners in most European countries, e.g.:– France: JEEE– Germany: de, elektropraktiker– Hungary/Czech: Elektrotechnika– Italy: Impianto Elettrico– Poland: Elektro Info– Turkey: Kaynak
www.leonardo-energy.org
A focus on LPQI Dissemination evolution (2/2)
To new online techniques :– Emailing– Peer to peer forum– Syndication– Social media– Webinars– On demand webcasts– Community of practice– 3D Forum virtual environment
Web stream for individuals

Email marketing
Weekly digest, via Leonardo ENERGY– Active promotion of
website content Key success factor:
– Development of permission-based mailing lists
• Leonardo mailing lists: total 33,000
Almost predictable metrics:– 40-50% open rate– 40% click-through– First 3 stories share
¾ of clicks
