Introduction
On 20th June 2014, we had a site visit organized by our Measurement 1 lecturer,
Sr.Ang. The site is located at Jalan Kelang Lama, right beside Pearl International Hotel.
It is the construction of a 25-storey mixed-use building. The building is named as Pearl
Suria. Its main contractor is Encorp Construct Sdn Bhd, its quantity surveyor is PCM
Kos Perunding Sdn Bhd, its civil and structural engineer is Perunding Majujaya, its
architect is LT Leong Sekutu and last but not least its mechanical and electrical
engineer is Kew & Associates.
Before we started our site visit, we were given a brief talk about the safety on site
by the safety officer of the site. Then we kicked off our site visit. Our visit were
accompanied by Mr. John and Mr. Chong. First of all, they told us the brief information
of Pearl Suria. Pearl Suria consists of 2 levels of shopping mall and 18 levels of
residential condominium. There are 2 levels of basement car park for the customers of
the shopping mall and 4 levels of car park on the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th floor for the residents
of the condominium from the 7th to 24th floor.
We started our visit from the basement car park. Then, we went up to the car park
on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floor which are meant to be the car park for the residents.

Objectives
1. Enable us to understand the sequences of constructing a building
2. Allow us to understand the building structures such as columns and beams well.
3. Expose ourselves to different types of building materials construction technologies
which we have learnt in class but have never seen in real life before.
4. Raise our awareness in the importance of taking care of our safety when we are in a
site.
5. Gain construction knowledge that we don’t get to learn in class such as the use of
continuous bore pile as a retaining wall.
6. Get a better grip when it comes to the understanding of construction machineries.
7. Allow us to get a vivid image of what we are actually learning in class especially
Measurement I by looking at the actual structures, for instance the formwork of a beam
where no deduction for the main beam even though there are secondary beams
penetrating it.
8. Allow us to get a sneak peek of the job scoop of a Quantity Surveyor.

Content/ Technical Observations
When we got to the basement which is the car park of the building, we saw a
continuous row of cylindrical-shaped concrete. Mr. Chong explained to us that bore
pilling is commonly used for high-rise buildings especially in the Kuala Lumpur region,
replacing the conventional reinforced concrete pile (RC pile). The continuous bore piles
act as a retaining wall for the building.
When we around the site, there are actually plastic pipes lying around the site and
some of the pipe were installed upright and protruding the upper floor suspended slab.
Mr. Chong told us those are concrete pipes. Those pipes are connected to the concrete
pump in order to transfer the concrete from the ground floor to upper floors. The main
reason to use concrete pipe is to increase productivity as it is too slow and troublesome
to transfer the concrete from one floor to another using manpower and tower crane isn’t
fast enough either. Tower crane is usually used when transferring small amounts of
concrete. Concrete pipe is able to transfer a whopping 30m3 per hour. Mr.Chong also
told us that concreting works are forced to stop when it is raining as the concrete can be
diluted by the rainwater.
After we are done walking around the site, we went back to the ground floor of the
site. There are a cluster of concrete pieces at the corner of the ground floor. Sr.Ang told
us those are the concrete spacers. We even get to see one of the workers making the
concrete spacers on site by cutting a large slice of concrete slab into small pieces. The
thickness of the concrete spacer is either 25mm or 50mm.
Before we left the site, me and a few of my other classmates witnessed the bar
benders bending the bars. Sr. Ang had told us before that the bar benders had their
own ways in calculating the amount of steel bars needed. We got to see them bending
the bars with the bar bending machine.

Learning Outcomes / Conclusion
After the site visit, I got a better grip with what I am actually learning in my
classes and gained some extra knowledge. For instance, there are a lot of scaffoldings
and mobile access towers that can be found on the site. By seeing them with my own
eyes, I get to easily tell apart the differences between independent scaffolding and
putlog scaffolding, previously I had difficulties telling them apart as to me, their
appearances are quite similar.
Besides that, the site visit raised my awareness when it comes to taking care of
my own safety on site. The brief given by the site safety officer highlighted the
importance of keeping our safety helmet on at all times when we are on site. Apart from
keeping our head safe by wearing a safety helmet, we should as be careful of the nails
on the floor of the site as mentioned by the safety officer. It is common to have nails
scattered around in a site thus I shall be extra careful when walking around the site.
Moreover, this site visit helps me to understand the principles of measurement
of reinforcement bars better after looking at the links and stirrups that were bent by the
bar benders. Apart from that, I also get to understand the concept of deducting concrete
cover when I am calculating steel reinforcement better now after Sr. Ang showed us the
concrete spacers on us and gave us a brief explanation.
In addition, I get to expose myself to construction machineries that I will hardly
get a chance to see in regular basis such as concrete pump, concrete pipe and bar
bending machines. Before the site visit, I have never heard of a concrete pipe. Concrete
pipes connected to a concrete pump actually transfer concrete from the one floor to
another with a whopping speed of 30m3 per hour, before this I thought that was the
function of tower crane. Mr. Chong told us that tower crane are only used to transfer
small amounts of concrete while for large quantity, concrete pump are used to transfer
large quantities of concrete which in return, save a lot of time. Time is crucial when it
comes to the construction industry.

Lastly, through this site visit, I get to get a sneak peak of the life and job scoop
of a Quantity Surveyor. During the site, Mr. Chong actually brought us to walk down the
scaffolding from the fifth floor. It was quite terrifying. Mr. John told us we work as
professional quantity surveyors, we might have to walk up and down these scaffolding
on regular basis.
To conclude, I find this site visit very useful to me as a Semester 1 student who
is a total newbie to the construction industry. I get to gain a lot of useful construction
knowledge that some I might not be able to learn in class and experience what might be
like to work as a professional in the construction industry.
