Dental implants and tooth extraction are
popular and often used treatments in
different parts of the world. There are
still lingering questions about patient
risks when it comes to implants and
extraction. What causes treatments to
succeed and fail in others?
Dental Implants: Risks, Causes, and
Developments
Swedish researchers conducted a review to identify if patients with
periodontitis are more vulnerable to peri-implantitis. It included 22 non-
randomised and randomised clinical human studies. The results revealed
that a higher vulnerability for periodontitis leads to a higher risk of
postoperative infection, implant loss and loss of supporting bone. The
researchers cautioned that the study may not be definitive due to various
uncontrolled factors and changes in dental implant concepts.
Another study revealed that
patients diagnosed with
periodontitis and smokers
have a higher probability of
implant loss. Patients with
implants shorter than 10mm
also showed a higher risk of
loss. Dentists must,
therefore, assess a patient’s
dental health before using
dental implants to treat gum
disease and other related
tooth problems.
Tooth Extraction as Last Resort
Tooth extraction is another treatment
for decay and gum disease, if the
damage is severe enough to
necessitate removal.
Extraction is often the last option, if all
methods of treating no longer relieve
pain or improve the teeth’s condition.
An infection that reaches the pulp not
only damages the tooth and its
surrounding enamel, but it also affects
the nerves and the blood vessels in it.
Root canal is the first treatment for tooth infection, but if it does not prevent
further infection, removal is the last resort.
Crooked and crowded teeth may necessitate tooth extraction to straighten
them. A tooth that does not erupt properly, decayed, and severely damaged
cause misalignment and need removal.
Treating Tooth Problems
Dental implants and tooth extraction
are viable treatments for gum disease,
such as periodontitis and tooth decay.
The dental health of the patient will
determine which method is ideal to
improve their condition. Consulting
with a dentist and a proper diet help
prevent the onset of any tooth-related
problems.
