Preparation is key.
Was there ever a course where you didn’t want to go?Have you ever had a learning experience that was boring, a waste of time or stressful?
These thoughts and feelings can be learning barriers. As a result, the learner can experience stress, lack of motivation, brain numbing or a severe reduction in learning ability.
There are 4 phases in the learning cycle: Preparation, Presentation, Practice, Performance
Preparation is important because an interested, positive learner = someone who wants to be there= someone who is willing to learn
Here are 9 ways we can help prepare learners for their learning experience.
1. Use positive suggestionsKeep what you say and how you act positive.
2. Create a positive physical environmentMove away from tradition. Use a theme. Decorate the space. Play some music.
3. Provide clear and meaningful goalsUse words, pictures, examples, demonstrations. Take out the jargon. Show the big picture. Make goals meaningful and relevant.
4. Provide learner benefitsLet them know ‘what’s in it for me?’Will it make my life easier? Will it help me stay current and viable? Will it increase my income?
5. Create a pre-course learner prep kitGet them ready to learn.A prep kit could include: a cover letter, an agenda in picture form, a YouTube video to watch, a questionnaire to complete before the course, a list of question to be used in the opening quiz game.
6. Create a positive social environmentEncourage collaboration. Build a learning community and they will come.
7. Promote total learner involvementGet them involved from the start. Have them come wanting to get involved.
9. Arouse curiosityGet them thinking – this is something new… - I want to find out more…Send them on a fact finding mission. Give them a problem to solve in teams.
