Our society is facing complex challenges, but our public services are not set up to cope. Radical thinking is needed - which is why NESTA has created The Lab.

Great to be here and to meet you hope to talk with you later and to answer questions after this presentation. I am alice casey, I design and develop projects within the social innovation lab at nesta. Currently leading on the nhood challenge.*EndowmentWhat kind of organistion? Former NDPB transitioning to charitable statusWorking on social and economic issues**The social and public service lab is what Ill be focusing on today*Responding to the fact that the old ways arent workingExample of the NHS sickness to wellness (cure to prevention and management)Chronic illnesses eg. diabetes and mental healthBehavioural change issues also an area gvt finds v.difficult to tackle top down alone eg. co2 reduction, social capital increase, anti social behaviour*The only graph Ill show you!Gives idea of the ongoing nature of the problems were facing as a society eg. agingJust doing things the same way is not a viable optionThe scale and urgency of the problem. *Time to try something new!*How to go about doing it in a moment but first we need to understand what were talking about when we say innovation*Lots of people think innovation is just ideas in fact it is a process of finding those ideas, developing ideas that arent new and applying those ideas failing, amending, reapplying until you achieve the desired impact.*Low barriers to entry an an open call means that we get maximum potential from those close to the community*We begin to give some steer and support to whittle down the most promising ideas*Ten finalists actually run and test out their ideas on the ground all trying to reach a particular goal*4 projects won a share of 1million pounds (the prize could have been smaller and had the same effect)*Community groups make a real, measureable impactThey can change behaviour and access hearts and minds in ways top down government approaches simply do notUnlocking capacity that we need to tap into to solve intractable issuesIts ok not to know it all*Practice what you preach try and open out the learning across your own programmes and be open and proud of success and failure*How can you apply these to your own practice?*Evaluating Public EngagementTCI/Involve 2008*Its not just the things that are easy to measure community resilience is built through difficult to measure indicators. Tell people a story they will always remember that*Building local partnerships*Check out the nesta website for Making IT local. It is a live project blog owned by our partners. We also asked all our partners to publish their data and share it openly on a national government website.*Data shouldnt gather dust on shelves or servers.*A bold choice of subject /issue*Putting the jigsaw together to make the whole picture of what can be done using new tech to benefit young people involved in crime*Fun and interactive events*Supply and demand is important perhaps a project isnt valuable if there is no demand for it? Prototyping is a good way to test risky ideas before you commission a pilot.*Three cool open organisations*Regain your curiosity! Spend some time pursuing your own interests! You yourself have an opportunity to make real change far beyond your own organisation.*Thank you and stay in touch.*Contact information for NESTA and myself.*
