Occupational Health and Safety
What is OH&S?
• Occupational safety and health is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or in employment.
OH&S Act of 1990• The OH&S act made in 1990 sets
the guidelines that employers must follow to ensure the health and safety of their employees. Some examples are:
Duty of Care• Duty of care outlines the basic
responsibilities of employers.These include:• Provision and maintenance of safe
plant and work systems.• Provision of a safe working
environment and monitoring of safety conditions in the workplace.
• Ensuring that employees are given adequate information and instructions for maintaining work safety.
Breaching OH&S Laws
• Awareness of the importance of OH&S has improved in recent years. Penalties for breaches of OH&S laws now include fines of up to $1,650,000 or naming and shaming in the press for corporations and fines and/or imprisonment for individuals.
• Can also cause death and serious injury to employees and/or third parties.
