nationalisations one of which was Owens-Illinois’ Venezuelan arm. Fears, though minor, also exist
with another default from Argentina and further nationalisation attempts from other South American
countries.
3.6 North American Glass Packaging Market Analysis 2015-2025 North America reverts from mild growth to mild contraction in real terms. Prior to the financial
turmoil that set the western markets on their current course, the US and Canada were growing well
and expanding production facilities to cope with the growing demand. Recently, several of these
production facilities that were mothballed in the ensuing events of 2008 have started to reopen.
The glass packaging market is still not at the level it was pre-recession but it is moving towards
that level very slowly. As consumer sentiment picks up in North America and the wider economy
starts to liven up, the glass packaging market will not follow at quite the same pace due to the
falling demand in beer and glass packaging for beverages being substituted for plastic. Despite this
general downtrend, craft beer sales have been rising substantially in North America and are not
expected to slow any time soon. This resurgence in craft beers and also craft spirits to a smaller
degree will keep the glass packaging industry moving as premium beers and spirits will remain a
mainstay of the glass packaging industry in North America. The largest glass packaging producer
in Mexico, Vitro SAB de CV, launched a large glass awareness campaign last year in order to buoy
the market for their glass products. However, like the rest of North America, Mexico is still hesitant
about their economic status and is holding off from spending on luxury goods. Despite this
wavering of the luxury market, the Mexican beer market is growing steadily at 3% a year and AB
InBev, one of the world’s largest brewers, recently bought control of Grupo Modelo, Mexico biggest
brewer, for $20.1 billion.
3.7 African Glass Packaging Market Analysis 2015-2025 The African market for glass packaging is still relatively closed off to the larger producers and
manufacturers of glass packaging and this is partly self-imposed. A large question looms over
Africa for the larger producers as to whether the capital and political costs needed to either buy into
the African market through selective acquisitions of existing companies or to start up new
operations organically will be worth the possible profit in a very fragmented and diverse continent.
Key driving countries on the African continent are South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana but more
recently Angola and Zambia have been seeing good growth in demand for glass packaging.
Nampak, one of the larger South African glass packaging producers noted that gains in trade from
within Africa, amounting to $22 million, were mainly due to increases in their Angolan and Zambian
operations. The personal care market has been performing well on the continent and especially in

and skill will help the company in growing both in Premium as well as Mass segment. Growth will
also be fuelled by continued efforts to transition some of the C&P production from the USA facility
to India. With reference to the Pharmaceutical segment, Piramal Glass continues to improve the
product and geography mix in order to optimise its sales, whereas in Sri Lanka and USA, it focuses
on growth in the high-end Specialty bottles segment.
