Personal Protective Equipment

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT An overview of the Basics

Safety boots must be CSA approved, 6-8 inches high and have a green triangle visible to the outside.Safety boots must be in good condition, i.e. no exposed toe caps.Safety boots must be fully laced up to protect the ankle.Only company issued Hard Hats are allowedProper hard hat liners are to be worn in the winter no ball caps underneath the hardhat. Chin straps or some adequate means of securing the hard hat must be used when working at heights.Face shields will be used when using grinders, jack hammers or chop off saws.High Visibility vests must be worn at all times while on site.Hand protection in the form of gloves, appropriate for the task, are to be worn by all workers while performing any task.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAMRespiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is a particular type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).RPE used to protect the individual wearer against inhalation of hazardous substances in the workplace air. RPE should only be used where adequate control of exposure cannot be achieved by other means.Giusti Group of Companies offers employees Respiratory Protection TrainingEmployer responsibilities include:An employer with responsibility for providing and maintaining the appropriate respirators, ensuring that workers use them when required, and ensuring that respirators are well maintained and function properly.Worker responsibilities include:A worker with responsibility for using your respirator correctly, inspecting your respirator before use, or cleaning, maintaining, and storing your respirator.

FALL PROTECTION

An employer must ensure that a worker is protected from falling at a temporary or permanent work area if a worker may fall ;

(a) a vertical distance of 3 meters or more,(b) a vertical distance of less than 3 meters if there is an unusual possibility of injury, or(c) into or onto a hazardous substance or object, or through an opening in a work surface.(2) For the purposes of this section, there is an unusual possibility of injury if the injury may be worse than an injury from landing on a solid, flat surface.

Supervisors and workers to prepare a fall protection plan if a worker at a work site could fall 3 metres or more and is not protected by guardrails. The plan must include procedures for rescuing workers who have fallen.

Employer shall provide a training program for each employee who might be exposed to fall hazards.

Only trained and competent workers shall use fall protection equipment.

Worker responsibility is to inspect, maintain and report any damages to fall protection equipment.

HAZARD ASSESSMENTS AND SITE SPECIFIC PROCEDURES

Each supervisor must submit a Site Specific Hazard Assessment and Job Procedure to Giustis Safety department prior to job start for each phase of the construction project.

Hazard Assessments/Site specific Job Procedures must be updated as the scope of work or site conditions change.

A Site specific job procedures evaluates and controls high risk work activities. It is prepared and reviewed by management, supervisors and workers who will be performing the task.

PRE-SHIFT INSTRUCTIONS (PSI)

A PSI must: Detail the basic steps or tasks and their sequence.Identify any hazards or potential hazards as indicated in the Hazard Assessment.Identify hazard controls or existing Safe Job Procedures or Safe Work Practices that protect against the hazard.Mandatory for all Giusti employees/subcontractors to review and sign daily PSI before task commence. Toolbox Talks:A thorough safety meeting between safety, foreman, and workers.Are held once a week (mandatory)

General Site Hazards

CONCRETE SAFETY

Best Protective Practices to work with wet cement:

1. Keep concrete from your skin 2. Wash with clean water & ph-neutral or mild acidic soap 3. Do not wear jewelry at when working with concrete. 4. Wear long sleeves 5. Use rubber boots with pants taped inside for concrete work. 6. Never let cement product remain on skin or clothing 7. Report any persistent skin problem to your supervisor & safety department

The dust created by cutting, grinding, drilling or otherwise disturbing these materials can contain crystalline silica particles. These dust particles are very small. You cannot see them. This respirable silica dust causes lung disease and lung cancer. It only takes a very small amount of airborne silica dust to create a health hazard.

Employer responsibilities:

Provide workers with respiratory protection when other controls are not enough, which are properly fitted and appropriate for the exposure.

Worker responsibilities:

Use all equipment and follow work practices provided to them by their employer to control the dust.The controls wont work if theyre not used.

SCAFFOLDS AND LADDERS

Scaffolding:Any scaffolding that is erected must be inspected and tagged every 21 calendar days by a competent worker.Scaffolding above 10 must have guard rails

A worker must NOT USE a scaffold if it has: A red tag, A green or yellow tag that has expired No tag at all

Construction Ladders Wood, Fiberglass or AluminumAll ladders are to be constructed in accordance to OH&S Act, Regulation & Code Page 8-5 Section 133 & 134.Workers must use the three-point contact at all times and must face the ladder when ascending and descending them.Do not use cellular phones or radios while on ladders.All material/equipment must be hauled up by a rope. Do not carry material or equipment up/down ladder.Workers cannot work from the top two rungs of any ladder.

Step Ladders/Extension laddersEnsure a firm base for ladder.Workers may not work on the brace side of a stepladder or from the top two steps. Sitting on top or straddling a stepladder is not permitted.Do not paint wooden ladders.Use the 3-point contact method when using laddersAll ladders must extend 3 above the upper landing and be pinned and tied at the top and bottomIf a ladder has cracked/broken rungs or legs then the ladder must be tagged out.

ACCIDENTS/INCIDENTS

ACCIDENT/INCIDENT REPORTING

All incidents must be documented and reported to the supervisor and Safety department immediately.This includes : First Aid injuries, Equipment or Property Damage and Near misses.Post incident Drug and Alcohol testing will be conducted as per Giustis Drug and Alcohol policy.All incidents will be investigated fully.

FIRST AID FACILITIES AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES A first aid station is situated within Giustis site office or the clients main office and C-Cans on site. Giusti supervisory personnel located on site are qualified standard first aiders. Contact Giustis Superintendent/Safety personnel for all injuries.All Injuries Must Be Reported to workers foreman and first aid personnel. Documentation of all injuries must be included in site record sheet prior to shift end. Injuries not properly reported or documented may result in complications with WCB. The site accident record sheet is located in each site office.Any pre-existing medical condition must be reported to your foreman and Giustis Safety personnel at the Orientation. This way, there can be procedures in place in case of emergency. This will not jeopardize a workers employment.Workers obtaining first aid are encouraged to use the buddy system to get to the first aid station. Complications may cause a worker to faint, become dizzy or require assistance, especially with bleeding wounds, eye injuries and sprains. Help your co-worker to treatment.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

If you are seriously hurt on site, stay where you are. Site first aiders and attendants will care for you until medical aid arrives.If you witness a serious incident, tell the injured person NOT TO MOVE and DO NOT MOVE the individual unless there is immediate danger. Leave someone with the casualty (preferably a first aider) and contact the site office. Ensure that the office has the following information:EXACT LOCATION OF ACCIDENTWHAT APPEARS TO HAVE HAPPENED?GENERAL CONDITION OF CASUALTYBE BRIEF AND ACCURATE.Giustis site office or Forman will contact Emergency Medical Services (E.M.S) who in turn will transport the injured individual to the appropriate Medical Facility.

In the event of an incident the scene must not be disturbed until after the investigation is complete and investigating authorities have released the site. Statements are required by all witnesses. Identify yourself to the person conducting the investigation. Notwithstanding the above, the care of an injured individual must take precedence.Any worker unable to leave the site under his/her own power will be evacuated by Emergency Medical Services (E.M.S) as arranged through Giustis site office.

FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE

1)Upon alarm sounding worker will activate nearest pull station

2)Designated Fire Marshalls (Danielle Wilson and Sarah Wallace) will send runners to alert buildings F,E,D,C,B with an Air horn from fire station.

3)Workers will file out through the East back door from Building D to dog house by Muster point sign. If fire is by or at the back of building then go to Secondary Muster Point located in the gravel driveway of the Pipe and Piling Company across from the main entrance of Giusti office. Please filing swiftly but carefully cautious of the footing and potential hazards.

FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE

4)Once the runners have alerted all buildings with the air horns and activating the pull station they will proceed out the nearest way to the muster area.5)When all workers from all buildings have arrived attendance will be taken to ensure everyone is accounted for.6)Building and Shops ARE NOT TO BE RE-ENTERED UNTIL FIRE DEPARTMENT GIVES ALL CLEAR.7)In the occurrence of missing attendance fire department will be notified of who and where the worker was last known to be working.

8)If working on site follow site specific requirements for fire evacuation.

Modified Duties ProgramReturn-To-Work Program

RETURN-TO-WORK PROGRAM

Giusti Group of Companies has a mandatory Return to Work program in place. All workers will be offered modified duties to accommodate their injuries, including sedentary duties if required. At managements discretion and to the extent of the employees physical limitations and company operations permit, a transitional-duty job will be provided until the treating healthcare provider releases our employee to his or her full, regular work.

Green Hands Program

GREEN HANDS PROGRAM

The purpose of this procedure is to assist with the safety of all employees on the Giusti project site. This program will aid in coaching, mentoring and verify competency to work safely and enhance the safety culture of all personnel on the project site.

Project Management/Supervision Duties;Verify that all workers are properly qualified to complete assigned tasks. Responsible to establish working relationships with the workers and their mentor.Identify the training needs of new worker.Verify when the worker is qualified as a competent worker.

Mentor A mentor is an influential senior sponsor or supporter.

Green Worker All new hires and contractors, summer students and transferred employees on the project site.

Safety Safety is the process of reducing or eliminating behaviors and/or conditions having an incident potential within a system or organization.

Mentor DutiesResponsible to provide supervision, coaching and mentoring to all new workers assigned to them.Verify that new workers receive adequate training to safely complete their tasks.Follow up with new worker on a continual basis to verify all concerns related to safety are answered. New Worker Duties: Responsible for the health and safety of themselves and all others on the work sites. Maintain communication and discuss concerns with mentor.

A Green Hands sticker will be placed on the hardhats of all new hires and contractors, summer students and transferred employees to alert the more experienced, competent workers to watch out for those who may need help to get through a time when they are at a higher risk of injury.

All employees in the Green Hands Program must wear the sticker at least 3 months or until competency is demonstrated.

SPOTTER TRAINING

PURPOSE: To provide personnel, supervision with a procedure for moving vehicles and equipment in, out and around obstacles to prevent personal injury and property damage.

SPOTTER RESPONSIBILITIES

The spotter and operator/driver will maintain eye contact at all times, if eye contact is broken all movement will be stopped.The spotter at the rear of the equipment/vehicle shall ensure that there are no personnel in danger of walking behind the equipment/vehicle backing up.Always ensure that the area is clear of non-essential personnel and any potential obstruction before signalling that the equipment/vehicle can begin to move.

OPERATOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Always do a walk around of the equipment and or vehicle to ensure non-essential personnel and items in the path of travel are clear and that there are no other obstructions, before moving.Always use three-point contact when getting into or out of a vehicle or piece of equipment.Always ensure that overhead doors are fully open before entering or exiting a building.In case where equipment or vehicles visibility to the rear is limited ALWAYS USE A SPOTTER!

Blind spots are the areas around vehicles or pieces of construction equipment that are not visible to the drivers or operators, either by direct sight or indirectly through the use of internal and external mirrors.

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY OH&S ACT SECTION 35

A worker must refuse to work or do particular work where he or she has reason to believe that there exists an imminent danger to the health and safety of himself/herself or another worker at the worksite. The following procedure is required:The worker must notify his/her supervisor at the work site of his/her refusal and the reason for his/her refusal. The employer must be notified immediately and investigate the incident and eliminate the imminent danger.Prepare a report of the workers notification, the investigation and the action taken. A copy of this report must be given to the worker.The worker cannot be subject to any disciplinary action.

Every GGLP worksite will have an up to date copy of the OH&S Act, Regulations and Code as well as the MSDS on site for their employees to review. The OH&S Act, Regulations & Code can be found at:- Giusti HQ office in the Copy room and Safety officeWall-Tech shop, Giusti cribbing shop, Viper mechanic shop and pump shop.Work site Giusti C-Can.Disciplinary action can be taken by OH&S Inspectors and Giustis Supervisors to correct unsafe work practices.The Giusti Group of Companies has a progressive warning system in place consisting of a verbal warning, written warning and final warning which could result in termination from the company.

Site safety inspections are conducted regularly by, Giustis site supervisory and safety personnel.

Observations of unsafe work practices or conditions will be immediately corrected by offending trades and their forces.

Giusti has a ZERO TOLERANCE for unsafe and at risk behavior.

Unsafe acts will not be tolerated at any time.

COMPANY SAFETY RULES

COMPANY SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. All accidents, near misses, injuries, property damages and unsafe conditions are to be reported to a supervisor.

2. The Shop Forman will see that all tools and equipment is used in a safe manner and that all personnel operating tools and equipment have had adequate training in the operation of these tools and equipment.

3. Operations Manager and Forman are responsible for:a)Inspecting equipment and toolsb)Ensuring that equipment and tools are being used in a safe mannerc)Ensuring all safety regulations have been met.

4. All employees, guests and visitors will wear CSA Grade Green Triangle 6-8 work boots, minimum short sleeved shirts and long pants, CSA approved hard hats and any other specialty PPE required for the job.

5. All unsafe, unhealthy or hazardous conditions or places shall be immediately placed off limits, out of bounds and then promptly removed or corrected.

6. CEO and President of Giusti WallTech insists that all employees observe and obey every rule, regulation and order as necessary for the safe conduct of their work.

7. No one will be allowed on the job site while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

8. No one shall knowingly be permitted or required to work with impaired ability of alertness caused by fatigue, illness, or any other factor that might cause the employee, co-workers, or any others to be exposed to accident or injury.

9. Horseplay, scuffling, and any other acts which have an adverse influence on the safety or well being of employees are prohibited.

10. Employees shall be alert to see that all guards and other protective devices are in their proper places and adjusted prior to operating equipment. Employees shall report deficiencies promptly.

11. Workers shall not handle or tamper with any tools, equipment or facilities not within the scope of their duties, unless they are thoroughly qualified, and given authority to do so.

12. Any injuries shall be reported promptly so that arrangements can be made for medical or first aid treatment, and recorded on the First Aid Record Sheet.

Public Relations

Exercise courtesy to non-construction personnelCourse language or comments which may constitute harassment will not be tolerated. The Giusti Safety Officer reserves the right to dismiss trade persons who do not display a professional and courteous manner.Non-job related poster/pictures are not permitted. (i.e. calendars, Sunshine girl pictures)Refer any questions from the media about the company to the CEO, Joe Giusti.

Company Rules PolicyAll employees are required to know and comply with all Company Safety Rules.Failure to do so may result in corrective measures, up to and including termination.

Enforcement PolicyPersonnel who fail to comply with government regulations or Giustis Safety Program will be subject to disciplinary action which includes fines, back charges, suspension and termination of contract and employment.

Safety is Everyone's Responsibility, its a full time job, dont make it a part time practice.
