Nancy Taxson—wife, mother and grandmother of seven—was Homestretch’s first Executive Director, serving for sixteen years. When Nancy was brought on by Kieran Sharpe back in 1990, she was working as a parish administrator for a church in Washington, DC. “Kieran had this idea and went to the county,” says Nancy. “We found some money, and the rest is history.”

Homestretch’s humble beginnings started with a dream. Like most dreams, it started small, literally in Nancy’s home. “We were working off my dining room table in the early days,” says Nancy. “At one point, Homestretch’s eleven employees were occupying four levels of my house.” Nancy likens Homestretch’s infancy to having a bull by its tail. In the beginning they were trying to help five families. By the time Nancy left in 2006, Homestretch had moved from Nancy’s house into a building of its own, and was helping 80+ families.

Nancy’s childhood in upstate New York and her prior professional experiences helped prepare her for the life she was about to embark on with Homestretch. “I was born into a household of service—it’s second nature to me,” says Nancy. Her first job was as a theatre producer for summer stock/off Broadway. At that time, Nancy and her husband were the youngest equity producers in the U.S. Nancy’s next career opportunity was as the comptroller for a New York City architectural firm; a position she held for eight years. That was followed by a stint as an administrator for an Episcopal Church. For 23 years, Nancy was the music director for a church in Washington, DC. Her combined personal and professional experiences created the perfect mix for her position as Homestretch’s first Executive Director.

“I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to serve Homestretch and its clients,” says Nancy. “It was a great opportunity for me to do a service—it was a big thing that was handed to me. We took hold of it and did it.” Homestretch’s success and legacy can be traced to a number of wonderful people, but Nancy’s enthusiasm, passion and dedication will forever be part of its foundation. Like most service organizations, they’ve celebrated great successes and learned from numerous disappointments. Homestretch will continue to celebrate successes thanks to the wisdom of its first leader. “Never give up—always keep positive cases in your mind and keep moving forward.”

Nancy’s desire to serve others less fortunate hasn’t waned. She has spent the past three years as President of the Board of Falls Church Community Service Council.
