DELTA QUÉÉBEC

Youve never stayed with us (like this) before.

Its not just a new guest room its a new experience. Its a room that anticipates your needs, that senses your next move. It knows when you want to be pampered, when you want to put your feet up and when you want to get down to business. Its design sensibilities exude a freshness that can lift a mood. At the same time, it offers welcoming warmth. You could say its feng chica holistic approach to travel. And the difference is day and night.

By design, it seeks to rejuvenate. Clean lines and airy, light-infused space are the central themes that take you to that place. An uplifting colour palette and abstract artwork complement the layout. And with thoughtful touches at every turn, you just might think its the room that has thought of everything.

Delta Greens. We are all guests of the environment.

At Delta Hotels and Resorts, were committed to doing our part in protecting our communities.

Thats why since early 2009, we have been actively working towards developing a national sustainability program, to align our efforts across the chain and even further strengthen our commitment to the environment.

Through guest and employee feedback, we gained greater insight and understanding into how Delta could become more environmentally friendly as a brand. Our conclusions were validated by research among industry leaders, and through expert consultation, we developed our national sustainability program, Delta Greens.

Delta Greens will lead the industry with the most comprehensive sustainability program that currently exists and will transform the way we operate our hotels. The program is unique because it addresses all areas of hotel operations from energy, water and waste consumption, to procurement, community engagement, and design and construction.

To date, we have identified 12 key performance indicators, collected baseline data from all of our hotels, set 2-year and 5-year targets, and prioritized our strategies and actions. National brand standards have been developed, tracking and reporting systems have been put in place, hotel green teams have been finalized, and employee training is currently underway.

Delta Greens will create best-in-class company standards for more sustainable hotel operations. In order for the program to be fully implemented, two major changes are required across the brand.

The first involves a culture change among our employees which is behavioural in nature and involves training and educating employees to adopt sustainable practices in their daily operations. This is in essence training employees to think and act green. The second involves changes to our physical product from replacing equipment and fixtures to more energy efficient models, to ensuring that hotel renovations and new builds maximize green efficiencies.

We expect the program to be fully implemented across the chain with all new brand standards and operating procedures in place, and employee training completed by early 2011.

Delta Greens will be measured through 12 key indicators and we are committed to continuously measuring, tracking, evaluating and communicating our targets and performance.

Energy Consumption & Carbon Emissions (Goal: 30% reduction over 5 years)

We believe it is important to reduce our energy consumption through energy efficient technologies, changes in operational procedures and standards, and increased use of renewable energy. Some examples we are implementing include lighting audits with resulting retrofit to ensure all equipment is using the most energy efficient products, an employee switch-off program, new standards for temperature setting, and operational energy savings tips that can be applied in all departments. In addition, equipment audits will be conducted to ensure that equipment has been serviced, maintained and is operating efficiently. This will result in operational efficiencies as well as reduced pressure on the power/electricity grid, which translates into a reduction in carbon emissions and air pollution. We are using utility bill information to monitor, measure and track energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Water Consumption (Goal: 30% reduction over 5 years)

From cleaning and sanitation to recreation and food preparation, water is essential to the functioning of Deltas business. This finite resource is susceptible to over-consumption and contamination and must therefore be consumed wisely and distributed fairly. Our goal is to reduce water consumption per occupied room through both efficiency and conservation measures. This includes training employees to adopt water saving practices, as well as replacing existing equipment with low flow fixtures such as toilets, faucets and showerheads.

Waste Output and Diversion (10% reduction in waste over 5 years; 25% increase in waste diversion over 5 years)

Waste is an unavoidable output for any hotel. However, Delta believes that the three Rs framework (reduce, reuse, recycle) is a useful tool for approaching and achieving waste reduction. Our first goal is to reduce resource consumption by purchasing products with minimal packaging and removing bottled water from guest rooms. Another goal is to reuse existing resources, as well as ensure that unavoidable waste is sent through the most sustainable channel for final disposal. This includes hotel-wide recycling, composting and donation programs. All hotels are currently modifying their internal waste handling procedures to ensure they are maximizing their level of separation and conforming with municipal guidelines. We will be measuring total waste output and diversion from landfill through composting and recycling efforts on an ongoing basis.

Procurement

The purchasing power of a company such as Delta can drive sustainability thinking in the hospitality industry supply chain. Incorporating environmental considerations into purchasing demonstrates our commitment to genuinely go green. To achieve this, we are increasing the percentage of Deltas total purchasing that is comprised of green products by evaluating current vendors and choosing products that are recognized by third-party green certification such as EcoLogo, Energy Star, Forest Stewardship Council, etc., as well as those which use natural ingredients, recycled content, minimized packaging or other environmental features.

Facilities Design and Maintenance

Environmental impacts related to the construction and operation of buildings go beyond carbon emissions and water consumption. The ways in which facilities are built, equipped, decorated, furnished, cleaned and maintained bring a host of environmental consequences. Delta will be developing a set of corporate brand standards relating to environmental considerations for new hotel construction, major refurbishments and minor renovations. The standards will help our hotels go beyond small-scale measures and strive for more fundamental results such as achieving environmental certifications like LEED on future new-build and refurbishment projects. In addition to addressing the environmental issues associated with construction and renovations, we are also developing a new set of Delta brand standards relating to green maintenance and operational procedures. This includes the establishment of energy-efficient temperature, water and lighting settings, ensuring proper maintenance and monitoring of equipment, using more gentle cleaning agents and incorporating auditing procedures.

Community Engagement

For Delta Greens to be successful, it is essential for us to have engagement among our employees and guests, as well as for us to contribute to our communities in meaningful ways. Employee engagement will be achieved by building awareness and knowledge through training and education, as well as engaging hotel green committees and introducing channels (both electronic and physical space within the hotel) where employees can gather information about sustainability initiatives. Guest engagement will be achieved by educating guests on Delta Greens and how they can contribute to our sustainability initiativies. In addition, each hotel has partnered with a green-organization in their local community by providing support through fundraising, volunteerism or donations.
