Industry Challenges Standards and protocols
Mainly national, company-defined or point-to-point standards
Mainly only after-the-fact results supported
Usually low frequency of data exchange between oil companies or suppliers
Unavailability of process / transaction identifiers
Different message layouts and content
Different transmission technology
Page 15© Implico Challenges of Data Communication
Industry ChallengesStandards and protocols
Some oil Majors, Implico and many Software suppliers across the Globe contributed heavily on developing Global standards through the PIDX platform
Not finished yet – but progressing fast
Clear Need: Use of Global Standard protocols

by various types
Page 18© Implico Challenges of Data Communication
Project Samples / ExperiencesExample Germany MPKS
After Data exchange of material movements between Oil Companies became more and more important, 1992 the German MPKS Standard was born
This standard was based on punch cards for Mainframe Hosts and had a lot of limitations
Almost all major players are still exchanging data based on this MPKS Standard
2008 IFLEXX was born

Project Samples / ExperiencesGlobal SAP Deployment in Rhine Region: Realised Benefits
Increased quality of data due to Synchronised master data
Less manual intervention
Less effort in error handling
Harmonised processes and tools allowing centralization of support activities
Minimised lead-time between Order taking and authorisation to load
Scheduling and execution
Improved execution management due to timely feedback (PIDX)
Increased business flexibility, e.g. cross-border operations
Reduced implementation effort due to harmonised processes and larger footprint (esp. PIDX eBOL)
Cost-efficient use of managed data hubs or clearing houses possible
Page 27© Implico Challenges of Data Communication
Project Samples / ExperiencesSummary
Reliable and quick communication becomes more and more important
Most Oil Majors take the same path
Sooner or later, all terminals need to follow modern data communication
International Standards are on it’s way, eg. PIDX
Benefits are out of question
Be prepared to follow the standards!
