BLOOD AND BLOOD VESSELS
Done By: Nigel , Sheng xi , Ching Er
RED BLOOD CELLS
Red blood cells are the most common type of blood cells which take up oxygen in the
lungs. They lack of a cell nucleus
The cytoplasm is rich in haemoglobin(an iron-
containing biomolecule)that can bind oxygen and is
responsible for the blood's red colour
WHITE BLOOD CELLS
White blood cells(leukocytes) are of the immune system involved in defending the body against both infectious disease and foreign materials. They live for about three to four days in the average human body.
PLATELETS Platelets are small, irregularly shaped
clear cell fragments (cells that do not have a nucleus containing DNA)
The average lifespan of a platelet is normally just 5 to 9 days.
If the number of platelets is too low, excessive bleeding can occur.
However, if the number of platelets is too high, blood clots can form thrombosis(the formation of a blood inside a blood vessel), which may obstruct blood vessels and result in such events as a stroke.
PLASMA Plasma is the straw-colored or pale-yellow liquid
component of blood normally holds the blood cells in whole blood in
suspension. It makes up about 55% of total blood volume. It is mostly water (93% by volume) and contains
dissolved proteins(Major proteins are fibrinogens, globulins and albumins)
BLOOD VESSELS(MAIN) There are three major types of blood
vessels: 1) arteries 2)Capillaries 3)veins
ARTERIES Artery are blood vessels that carry blood
away from the heart. This blood is normally oxygenated,
exceptions made for the pulmonary and umbilical arteries
CAPILLARIES
Capillaries are the smallest of a body's blood vessels
Capillaries do not function on their own
VEINS In the circulatory system, veins (from
the Latin vena) are blood vessels that carry blood towards the heart.
Most veins carry deoxygenated blood from the tissues back to the heart.
