BLOOD AND BLOOD VESSELS
BLOOD VESSELS
• What are blood vessels?
• Ans : Blood vessels are intricate networks of hollow tubes that transport blood throughout the entire body
• Why do we need blood vessels?
• Diffusion is too slow to transport materials and cannot remove wastes
BLOOD VESSELS IN THE BODY
• Arteries
• Veins
• capillary
ARTERIES
• Is an elastic blood vessel that transport blood away from the heart
• Question: What is the function of Arteries?
• It is to carry blood away from the blood. It is equipped with thick walls, smooth muscles and very elasticized tissue
VEIN
• Is an elastic blood vessel that transport blood all over the body
• What is the Function?
• It is to carry blood towards the Heart.
CAPILLARY
• Extremely small blood vessel located within the tissue of the body.
• Function: pick up waste, carbon dioxide, nutrients and gas
TYPES OF CELLS
• Red blood cell
• Plasma
• White blood cell
• platelets
EXAMPLES OF RED BLOOD CELLS
RED BLOOD CELLS
• Transport oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body
• Oxygen is produced during respiration
WHITE BLOOD CELLS
• Defends the body against both infectious disease and foreign materials.
• They live about 3 to 4 days in the human body.
EXAMPLES OF WHITE BLOOD CELLS
PLASMA
• holds the blood cells in whole blood in suspension
• protects the body from infection and other blood disorders.
• pale-yellow liquid
EXAMPLES OF PLASMA
PLATELETS
• small, irregularly shaped clear cell fragments
• do not have a nucleus
• lifespan of a platelet is normally just 5 to 9 days
• Stops bleeding
