Bioplastics Market Forecast 2014-2024: Prospects for Biobased / Non-Biodegradable Packaging, Consumer Electronics / Products, Catering, Agriculture & Pharmaceuticals
8. Expert Opinion
8.1 Tetra Pak
8.1.1 Bioplastics can be More Expensive Than Traditional Plastics, What
do you Think Needs to be Done for Bioplastics to be able to Compete
With Traditional Plastics on a Larger Scale? TetraPak: This is a very new industry that can’t be compared using the same scales as the gas/oil
based polymer industry which is very well established. We believe these new products will expand
and become mainstream one day.
8.1.2 In Which Geographical Regions do you Expect to see the Biggest
Growth in the Next 5 Years? TetraPak: There are several technical development and new technologies. For our products we
have started in Brazil as that is the place there is stable production and availability (including
control of social/environmental conditions)
8.1.3 Biodegradable Bioplastics Address Both the Sustainability and
Recyclability Issue that Traditional Plastics Have. Do you Think Non-
Biodegradable Bioplastics are a Good Solution to these Issues as they
Still Produce Waste Products Once they are Consumed? TetraPak: Bio-degradability requires infrastructure that is commonly not available. We have
chosen to work with bio-based polymers that have the same molecular composition as traditional
plastics, so they fit into recycling and energy recovery programmes as the latter.

Bioplastics Market Forecast 2014-2024: Prospects for Biobased / Non-Biodegradable Packaging, Consumer Electronics / Products, Catering, Agriculture & Pharmaceuticals
9.2.1 DOW’s Solutions for Bio-based Packaging The Dow Chemical Company has developed a range of impact modifiers and process aids for PLA
that enable and extend the applications open to bio-plastics. These impact modifiers increase
impact strength of finished articles and reduce breakages that can occur during cutting and hole-
punching while maintaining the excellent clarity of the base polymer. The process aids increase
melt strength helping to facilitate the processing of PLA using complex processes, such as blown
film extrusion, reducing process costs and extending the range of applications open to PLA.
To address the performance issues of PLA, Dow developed PARALOID™ BPM-500 impact
modifier for PLA in 2007. PARALOID BPM-500 modifier gives an excellent balance of impact
performance and clarity through its sub-micron size distribution, good dispersion and refractive
index match between the particles and the matrix. The addition of PARALOID BPM-500 reduces
the risk of shattering during cutting or punching of extruded PLA sheets during final production.
Building on the performance enhancing benefits of PARALOID BPM-500 modifier, DOW
introduced next generation PARALOID BPM-515 and PARALOID™ BPMS-250 and BPMS-260
additives. PARALOID BPM-515 modifier provides a higher impact resistance and demonstrates
performance enhancements at levels as low as 2 wt%. PARALOID BPMS-250 and BPMS-260
additives were developed to address the need for low-melt strength in PLA. These modifiers allow
the processing of PLA using either blown film extrusion, extrusion blow moulding or calendaring.
PARALOID BPMS-250 does not need to be pre-dispersed on twin screw compounders and helps
PLA maintain good optical performance.
Dow Plastics Additives has now introduced a new additive, PARALOID BPM-520 impact modifier
to address the demand for high impact strength in PLA for opaque applications. PARALOID BPM-
520 has been designed specifically for use with PLA injection moulded resins. It delivers excellent
colourability, exceptional surface finish and high impact strength at room and sub-zero
temperatures. PARALOID™ BPM-520 modifier is a versatile PLA additive solution for opaque food
and semi-durable packaging applications.
