Asian Session – Yen dips after BOJ policy meeting
Posted on September 5, 2013 by the XM Investment Research Desk at 6:23 am GMT
The Bank of Japan concluded its policy setting meeting on Thursday announced it left its
monetary policy unchanged upwardly revised its view of the economy, saying in a
statement that it is “recovering moderately”.
The BOJ will continue with asset purchases as part of its stimulus plan to bring inflation
up to a 2 percent target.
The BOJ policy announcement initially had little impact on yen but after the BOJ press
conference by the end of the Asian session the USDJPY jumped higher, reaching 99.96
yen but unable to break above the key 100 level.
With the BOJ meeting over, investors now look ahead to other major central bank policy
meetings by the European Central Bank and Bank of England. No policy changes are
expected, but as always analysts will study the bankers’ statements carefully.
In other currencies, the euro slid against the dollar ahead of the key ECB meeting later
today. EURUSD fell some 35 pips from $1.3204 to a session low of $1.3162.
GBPUSD opened in Asia at $1.5622 and slid to $1.5594. EURGBP hovers near a three-
month low of 84.36 pence. The pound is being buoyed by strong data releases this week.
Apart from central bank meetings, in the U.S. session we will have a slew of U.S.
economic releases, including the ADP private-sector employment report and the latest
data on weekly jobless claims. The ADP is seen as a precursor for Friday’s big nonfarm
payrolls jobs report.
