An Post:A Venerable Institution Transforms
Itselfagain and again…

Introduction On a trip to Dublin, Ireland in the fall
of 2012, I was captivated by the country’s Post Office (An Post).
Unlike the US postal system, An Post seems to have done a great job of transforming itself over time to adapt to changing circumstances and technologies.
This photo essay offers examples of how An Post has embraced and responded to Digital Era realities, and demonstrates that its current adaptive capacity is deeply rooted in a history of flexibility and nimbleness.
Which ones have successfully adapted to
change? Which are struggling?
Think about other industries and
organizations that have strong roots
in the past…

The An Post building dominates Upper O’Connell Street and is a hub of activity
for both residents and tourists.

The 300 year-old building itself played a key role in Irish history.

Today’s An Post still delivers letters and packages...

But it helps people do much more. In fact, it even created a “Do More” campaign to highlight the variety of services it offers…

In a further testament to their ingenuity, the main An Post building includes a Philatelic
Shop and museum. We made a point of returning later to visit the museum.

The first exhibit is a good reminder that even large institutions can support cottage industries,
as well as the fact that stamp design is an art form (and possibly a lost art?).

In a nod to the Digital Era, the exhibit includes an interactive kiosk that lets you design your
own stamp. Fun!

This is another neat interactive exhibit that brings the past to
life in a fun digital way.

It’s always important to remember the important economic and social roles
government institutions play.
